What on earth has happened to this establishment ? 20 years ago the beer was good, the food was excellent and the atmosphere comfortable. 5 years ago the beer was adquate (more often than not), the food was edible (generally) and the atmosphere plastic. I've visited again in the last fortnight - I can't comment on the food, after the previous offering I decided to give it a body swerve. The beer left more than a little to be desired. But the atmosphere..........A manager who's approach would curdle milk, all drinks poured like lager or cider - from height and without thought of the end result. Earwigging the locals it sounded as though the only reason they drank there was that it was the lesser of two evils, there only being 2 pubs in the village. This pub needs to pull it's socks up or it will end up as another extension to a Premier Inn.

Dropped in here the other night on my way home. Must say I had a good pint of Youngs Special. Pleasant enough inside with an 'olde worlde' feel. I'd drop in again when passing. 7/10 from me. Can't rate the food as I never tried any....sorry!!

One of the great things about the White Hart is the people that work there. The food has really improved over the last year and I'm really looking forward to the may bank holiday weekend.
Keep up the good work boys and girls

Visited on a mid-week lunchtime. The Youngs bitter was great yet the pub felt rather sterile. Very chain-pub, not welcoming and little atmosphere.

Went there last night, I found the pub itself was great and the staff couldn't have been nicer.

Pretty average Youngs pub, really. Only 3 ales on (Ordinary, Special and Bombardier) which isn't great for a pub this size and two of them ran out quickly without being replaced. Not cheap either.

Bit 'chain bar' sanitized inside. Decent seating outside, a saving grace at least.

Preferred the Four Horseshoes over the road - beer not overly superior, but a better pub atmosphere generally. But neither really convince.

Decided to try this pub, which I used to visit a lot during 2000/1, but don't think I'll be returning in a hurry. Firstly the service was dire, the staff preferring to serve the 'locals', even when they stroll to the bar 5 minutes after myself. Secondly the aforementioned boorish locals; barging past, pushing in, holding loud conversations with us in the middle. Thirdly the Youngs was far from the best example I've tasted recently. I really hate pubs like this, a senseless waste of drinking time.

Thank you for catering for our daughter's wedding. The meal was fantastic. Everybody commented on the lovely meal and the service was great. I would recommend you to anybody.

What a shame about this pub. It was once privately run and although not perfect had decent food and atmosphere. Then owned by Youngs around 2004 with an extension and obvious investment looked to have great potential. Started off well with Youngs, great new menu, friendly staff. However it has gone very down hill with current landlord. It is my local but very rarely go there because the service is poor, staff don't seem to care and the food dreadful. Ordered Fish and Chips with 'handmade' tartar sauce. Chips were overcooked/burnt, tartar sauce was in a sachet. Ordered a homemade burger and overheard the landlord tell the barsaff to 'enter it as medium, we only do medium'. Burger seemed to have been deep fried, probably with the fish and chips.

Popped in on May Day-very busy nd very popular. Not much choice in beers-Youngs Special,Youngs Best and Wells bombadier all of which have been on for ages. Pint of Special for self and 1/2 of Best for she who must be obeyed. Barman plonked them HIS side of the beer clips making me reach over the top to retrieve them. Beer garden untidy with grass left uncut. This was an excellent pub when Youngs first took it over.Youngs take note;and for goodness sake change the beers. Pity Fullers didn`t get it- Fullers take note!!

Very nice pub; a pleasant place to have a drink and pass some time. The beers are good, but the food is very over-priced for the quality/quantity.

Just had a great evening, playing a game of chess by the open fire. Could this place be any better

Beer good
But food poor, we had ham egg and chips plus a ham sandwhich - ham was thick cut as advertised but reconstituted no flavour or texture and lots of fat, sandwhich made from packet bread.
small side salad fresh but both came with half a cherry tomato ! must have cost more in time to cut tom than it was worth, all in peek salad time.
all in all very poor value

What a lovely pub to find, in the midle of nowhere. Great beer, great food and great service, 10 out of 10 keep up the hard work

Very friendly, nice decor, clean and nice smelling toilets. Large garden. Real ales good condition (bit pricey). Didn't have time for food but looked really tasty with good sized portions. Can't wait to go back and try the food too!

Went in for family Sunday lunch on the spur of the moment. Never been before. Initially staff were very friendly, helping with childs seat etc. Menu looked pricey. 9 for a traditional roast dinner. I ordered the 'traditional' spaghetti bolognaise. It was very poor quality. Almost certainly frozen mince meat with nothing fresh in it. Served like a paste on top of the spaghetti. Obviously made with the cheapest of ingredients. Others roast dinners were OK but not exciting and didn't warrant the high price. Staff collected half the plates later but left the rest, didn't ask if everything was OK at any time. Very disappointing. Can't comment on the beers as we were all driving but could not recommend this pub for food.

Very nice pub with excellent food. Not an extensive menu but enough for there to be a reasonable choice. Mainly Young's bitters and what is not on the hand pump you can get in a bottle.

Lovely roaring fires in the bar areas.

very disappointing had to wait a long time for food overpriced, not very tasty only one token vegitarian dish which seemed to be spinach with spinach and some lasagne and a mushroom

Just "happened" on this great pub, by chance, for dinner recently. Cheerful friendly service

Food was really excellent, well presented, filling (2 out of 3 of us couldn't manage a pudding. Menu not very large, but 10 choices should cover most needs.

I'm taking friends out to dinner soon and have reserved my table already

This is a lovely pub although the manager who took over while the real managers were on holiday was unfriendly and rude. We actually stopped going in while he was there.
The food has slightly gone down hill, they really need to change their menue and offer alternatives. Perhaps include the lunch menue in the evenings during the summer when people just want a light snack.

Very expensive wine but a wide variety of beers. The waitresses are so lovely and the bar staff are very friendly.

On the odd occasion you get pikeys which really drags the place down when they start fighting.

ll in all a good pub but it is evident that this pub belongs to a chain unlike the 4 horse shoes. A real shame.

OK

Seemed a nice pub. Guinness was good and the service was friendly. The only downside was the meal I ate was poor, Rubbish Pie with watery mash - However, other peoples food looked OK, so perhaps just avoid the pies (if you'll pardon the expression)

in the middle of nowhere so you would be hard pressed to pop in on the off chance, but if you are in the area it is worth a visit.

Great pub, great food and nice staff. In fact the blonde manageress has to be the fittest manager I have ever seen and really keeps the place going with here personality and obvious charms.
oxforddon - 10 Feb 2006 06:47
The White Hart has lost it's 'personal touch' since being taken over by Youngs. Lovely garden tho !
thenuttytart - 17 Jul 2005 20:52
Bit plasticky & lacking in atmosphere. Obviously part of a chain rather then indepemdemt & it shows. Beer rather average

A Young's pub, which is rather good. A friendly welcome and good food (as well as the beer). Good size beer garden is great for outdoor drinking.
