please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Two of us had lunch here on 15th April 2013. We each had fish pie and a pint. The food was just awful, tasteless vegetables, overcooked, tasteless fish topped with mashed potato microwaved almost to destruction. In a practically empty pub we had to wait ages and remind the bar staff. For £11.99, disgusting. Overall atmosphere was dull, external doors banging in the wind, unwatched TV moaning in the background.

Good riverside location with some nice tables up in the bay windows looking out on the Thames. Rest of the pub is a bit cavernous and bland with a chain feel. We went on a quiet afternoon but guessing in summer it's rammed with people eating.

Nice location, good patio area and a decent enough place, usual Youngs' menu, not tried it here but have tried the exact same menu elsewhere and enjoyed.

Good location but sorry was very disappointed with the food. Mussels were tough and tasted as if they were in dish water. I love this dish but not in this pub. Staff very pleasant though

Cracking boozer on the river, loyal to locals and great for visitors...nice little patio and if you vist more than probably likely to get a welcome nod or 2 from the locals..good beers, not bad food and a lovely community feel that is lacking so very much these days...

one warning - steer clear on boat race days! its right on the finishing line and well vey busy.

Good beer including guest ales, well kept, excellent pub food including a veggie "fish" and chips (in fact battered halloumi) - perfect for vegetarians who are sick of the usual uninspiring veggie options. Went in there with 16 people on a weekend lunch time, we all got food quickly and the portions were great. Recommended.

Re Brewery Tap I said Courage but perhaps I meant Watneys? Or did both use this site at one time?
Maldenman - 7 Jun 2009 21:55
A large L shaped open plan space, obviously once different areas. The bar wraps around the inner corner of the "L". A mix of seating of all kinds including sofas around the fireplace, the window tables have great river views. The floor starts with wooden boards, becomes stone flagged and finishes carpetted to the rear. Very friendly and personable staff, a genuine welcome and impressed that the barman took the trouble to find out for me who brewed one of the ales as it wasn't clear on the pump clip.
Right next door to the Stag Brewery, so I imagine this was once the brewery tap (Courage), they now brew Budweiser (no comment needed). The pub was apparently also once the finishing point for the boat race.
Nice to see proper access for disabled people, both to the pub and the riverside terrace.
Two sets of three handpumps served today, Pride, Brains Old Brewery Bitter and Wickwar Bankers Draft.
The food looked good, Sunday roasts at 8-85, choice of beef, lamb or turkey, with small portions available at 5-65. Really good to see a riverside pub with great service that doesn't simply rely on its setting to get trade, well done.

This pub has a great location on the river with nice views visible from the tables along the front window and the outside drinking area at the side.

There are six nations signs up on the walls and the flags of each team are hanging above the bar, but I didnt see any other sport advertised to be shown on their two plasma screens.

There are two Pride pumps and the Guest beers were Polar Bear and England Expects along with an unused pump. Standard and premium lagers are also available along with a basic pub food menu.

Id imagine this place gets packed out in the summer and I may just pop along to find out.

Been visiting for 15 years, 5 years ago it was probably the best pub in the area in terms of location food and beer, sadly it is completely gone down the pan. Paid around 7 pounds for a plate of Nachos a few weeks ago which took the shape of a small bowl of nachos with the smallest amount of cheese and salsa that a University Student would be ashamed of, the atmosphere has gone too. A real shame.

Great location with superb river views and lots of outside seating. Beer was OK - not the very best pint of Pride that I have ever had, but perfectly acceptable and very welcome after the walk from Kew. Food seems to be standard pub fare, and the burger and chips I had was pretty good for the going rate of 5.95. My wife had the beef and Old Speckled Hen ale pie, which seemed a bit expensive at 8.25, but she said it was excellent. Nothing special about the inside of the pub that I could see, but comfortable enough and the service was as good as I expect in a pub. Definitely worth going for the setting.

Nice pub, scenic location, good guest ales, good food/bbq's

Charity Quiz nights are back on Sundays at 8.30, entry is 1 a person and theres even a Jackpot round which increases each week if its not won. I spent some time there over the Easter weekend and saw the Boat Race and "danced" to a Radio Jackie DJ. There's a new kitchen team headed by Lucas and a new manager, Helen. Maybe the old tub is afloat again! I'll be going back!

Taking on a dangerously large amount of water and likely to sink without a trace unless numerous problems are addressed asap. Go elsewhere.

Has undergone a recent revamp - but to our horror they have taken all the excellent pies off the menu! Popped in for lunch on a weekday to celebrate a colleagues forthcoming nuptials. We ordered... we waited... we waited... we waited... finally some of the meals arrived after 45 minutes (we only get an hour for lunch). My lasagne was completely over-microwaved, the bits that were edible tasted like plastic. Two colleagues were still waiting for their burgers and chips 20 minutes after the rest of us finished eating. Terrible service. Avoid like the plague and go the The Railway instead, much nicer.

I have no idea who the people are who posted such awful comments about The Ship, but I'll totally disagree with all comments. I have eaten there many times (admittedly not on a Sunday) and the food and service have been excellent. The staff are friendly and attentive, I say Try This Pub, but only up till the end of February when the Landlord leaves after 6 dedicated years of service. Well Done and Good Luck John!!

Had Sunday roast there yesterday and it was excellent . Had the beef which was nice and rare as it should be with plenty of roasties and veg .Place was very busy all afternoon so quite a few people must agree with me . Oh and the Guiness was coming up pretty fine too !!!

I happened to pop in here one Sunday afternoon, as a last resort cos i was absolutely starving! (Wish i hadn't bothered though)! I opted for a beef Sunday dinner (if you could call it that).Once i had recieved the dinner, i proceeded to eat/chew it,but i literally couldn't, no matter how hard i tried! Heavens knows what the meat was i was trying to eat(or wheteher it was meat at all, might as well have been a lump of rubber), all i know was it certainly didn't taste like any beef i had eaten before.I must have had a small mouthful of beef in my mouth for about 5 minutes, trying to perservere by chewing it furiously, but it just wouldn't break up, it was so unbelievably tough, ended up going to the toilet and getting rid of it down the loo!! All i can say was the meal was just disgusting, wouldn't serve it up to my dog! Whatever you do keep clear from The Ship (or as i call it now 'The Shit')!

What a truly terrible pub! The food looked terrible, the decor was late 60's, the service was shockingly bad and it was just full of workers from the brewery next door clogging up the place. Do not ever go. Visit the Railway near the station

I have been to the Ship many times over the years and until today it was one of my favourite pubs. Today I went there with five members of my family and I can safely say we will never go again. We ordered lunch and it took an hour to come - after we reminded them twice. The attitude was pretty much "well yours is a big order and there are other people who came in before you". Then parts of the order were wrong and they tried telling us we had ordered something we hadn't. My brothers fish was inedible. Our nachos looked hastily chucked together - and the chips were cold. My potato with chilli was uninspiring. My daughter had an eyelash in her very fatty BLT.

From when we asked to see the manager it was a good ten minutes before he came down.

In all, very crappy service. They did not charge us in the end because we were so pissed off.

Other than that, it's a lovely pub.

Excellent pub - great location, good food, good service and good beer . Need I say more.........
squatter - 3 Aug 2005 08:25
This is my local pub and whilst I am very bias it is the best local I have ever had. Pretty pub in a brilliant location right on the river. Landlord is great, food good (especially the bbq every evening in the summer) and prices not too expensive. Locals are nice too!!
anonymous - 9 Jun 2005 16:02
John the Landlord is a legend! Sexy rowers drink there too!
Jill - 8 Oct 2004 22:18
Great pub situated at the Boatrace End on the river. Live music, great food buzzing crowd. Walk the extra half mile. Well worth it. Quiz night is good too.

I've only been here once, and that in unusual circumstances -- a big boozy wake after a pal's cremation in the local cemetary nearby. Good beer, good location right by the river, my late pal would have loved it.
Paul - 25 Jul 2004 21:45
I've been to this pub about a dozen times and found it to be quite drab and lifless. Bunch of old mumblies in there, occasionally a band but the two I've heard were shockingly poor.

Has so much potential but doesn't realise it. Food is nice though and the re-done beer garden is great.
Mortlake needs better pubs - 26 Apr 2004 12:53
The Ship. Great day on boat Race day last sunday. Serving some great food, hot dogs, thai, squid and barbie's going. Live band after the race Syd James Quartet( also known as Fire and Rain)did a bloody good set of cover songs. They are playing next at The Charlie Butler in Mortlake in May
but when are the Ship going to book them again. You have to visit this pub, and loads of eye candy if you are single.
grizelda - 5 Apr 2004 22:16
nice river location. comfy inside on cold days better outside on hot days. can be overrun by screaming sprogs in summer esp on sundays but sit out the front & you can escape them.
millym - 4 Apr 2004 16:37
Great pub with really friendly stuff and locals - beware of special nights like Halloween! They are mad party animals!
No idea where someone could get the association with 'platic and down market' from???
And the BBQ's in the Summer are absolutely yummie ;-)
Petra - 19 Mar 2004 11:04
Have never had the food. But the beer is good and the service is great. Perfect for lazing on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Sitting outside watching the rowers slogging it out, as the sun sets over the river is a joy.
tom - 10 Mar 2004 22:29
I know all the pubs in this area pretty well and i would have to say this is the best one around.Great Atmosphere, friendly staff and manager.Quiz nights on tuesdays are good fun and you don't have to pay to enter. The Live Music every now and again makes for a super party night.Lovely place to visit.

About 7 years ago this pub was the bees knees, wonderful old riverside pub, full of character and atmosphere. Then some one decided to gut it and turn it into a plastic pub serving plastic food. Sat inside you could have been in a down market pub anywhere in the country. Judging from the comments below it has not changed. Fraft Budweiser says it all!
Sam - 28 Nov 2003 12:28
Really nice pub. Brilliant location and friendly staff. Food is a bit dodgey but if you're into that frozen food thing then it's your bag! Cheese and onion crisps a good bet for those of you WITH taste buds!
Brian - 4 Jun 2003 16:14
Great pub with a supurb view of the river, busy on Sunday lunchtimes. Well worth the 5 min stroll down the river from Ye White Hart...especially as they do draft Budweiser!!
Gary - 28 Apr 2003 11:56
Great pub, good atmosphere and good food. Staff are very friendly and the beer is always good. The pub is situated right on the Thames and the annual Oxford / Cambridge boat race ends outside.
Good pub to visit on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon!
