We were hoping to find real cider here last Saturday lunchtime but there wasn't any and my pint of Exmoor Redstone was only average. With just one or two locals present (and a sorry-looking caged bird), we drank up quickly never to return I imagine.

With the King William at Catcott apparently closed for good, we had a longer wait than expected for the Ring O'Bells to open. A few others joined us as it neared the 7pm opening time. I was glad we waited though. This is another lovely Somerset hostelry with a couple of real ales, a real cider, a cosy lounge and a large room complete with a skittle alley. The 2 ales were Severn Vale Dursley Stem Bitter & RCH PG Steam. Cider was Wilkins Farmhouse. We also enjoyed a decent dinner here too. I opted for the Sunday roast deal, which included a dessert for £10.50. Was worth the wait.

Have had a few incredible meals here since they took on the new chef. Wonderful specials that always change (unlike a lot of other local places), beautifully cooked steaks and really impressed with the pies, not bought in either! Other half was very impressed by the selection of beers and all the staff were lovely, especially towards our 1 year old who had everyone cooing over him. Will definitely be back for more.

Found this pub by chance but what a find..I wonderful blonde ale at a reasonable price and a warm welcome. There is a covered smoking area where I could watch my daughter play in the garden from . I however have to disagree with previous comments about the food. My wife ordered the whole torbay sole and I had the homemade lamb and apricot pie which was really good . my daughter who is a fussy eater had the kids lasagne which she said was better than mummy's well that didn't go down well but the sticky nut tart and white chocolate and malteaser cheesecake did!

I can only re iterate what others have said about this pub. A nice pub, good choice of beer and well worth drinking but avoid the food unless absolutely necessary,

not a bad place for a drink, but until they hire a decent enough cook do not EAT......one word bland.lady of the lake was a cracking pint though.will return but just for the ale .

Have to agree with the previous review about the cooking, I went to a "Moroccan" evening and the food was as bland as Saturday evening telly. Not a single spice was employed in any of the three meals we ate. So disappointing. But do stop for the beer (which is why you should visit a pub after all), it's always excellent.

Popped in for Sunday lunch.
Roast beef was overcooked and then shaved off in very thin slices, two tiny roast potatoes, and veg consisted of red cabbage (not with beef!) carrots and courgettes.
Gravy which was congealed and a Yorkshire pud which was the only part of the meal which was acceptable. Tried the Hedge Monkey @ 4.6% and the Lady of the lake @ 4.2, both of which were fine, but not as good as before Greg Nicholls stopped brewing.
Beer OK but such a shame they can't cook!

Popped in midweek, very pleasant indeed, good atmos, and three local real ales on,teo of which we tried, P G Steam and Isle of Avalon Sunrise, both excellently kept. We shall be returning.

I live in Glastonbury but have made this pub my "local". Such a friendly inn searving a very lucky village at Ashcott.

The food is ALL home cooked to a very high standard and any variations one wishes they are most happy to accommodate.

The beer is always from local breweries and three are normally on at any one time. All lines are kept cleaned and I have never been searved a "bad" pint

I recommend this pub to one and all

Not been here for a few years, but a trip to nearby Clarks Village was the excuse for a visit here - and it was well worth it. Tucked away in the upper part of the village it is well signposted from the main (A39) road. Excellent couple of pints of Skinner's Cornish Knocker (a bargain at the special price of 2) to go with a good quality (and substantial) meal. Also available were Codrington Codger (Cotswold Spring) and Topsail, (Bays Brewery) plus real cider from Orchard Pig. Friendly owner who is happy to chat. Will certainly return.

An opportunity arose last Sunday to pay a maiden visit to this GBG-listed and well-respected hostelry, tucked away in a quiet Somerset village. It is located on the 'High Street' but don't expect the usual wide boulevard of pubs, restaurants and shops; this place is found on a side-road up the hill and is surrounded by housing.
A slightly uneasy mix both in and outside of traditional pub with 1960s extension tacked on the back, the Ring O' Bells nevertheless exudes a comfortable, cosy character in which one can enjoy a range of 3 excellently-kept cask ales (including on our visit the rarely-seen Isle of Avalon Sunset), and ostensibly at least some pretty decent home-cooked food.
The landlord, hailing not from Somerset but Northamptonshire, is a pleasant and affable cove, who was most informative about various aspects of the pub when engaged quite willingly in conversation.
The atmosphere is one of gentle conviviality and the clientele was fairly mixed; observations suggested middle-class young couples and families were rubbing shoulders with older working-class single folk quite conducively.

There are numerous pubs of this name in this region; I remain unsure as to exactly why given that many village boozers across the nation were sited in sound of nearby church bells and yet do not reflect their peal in their title, so don't get this confused with the others. Although I am bound to say that most of the other Rings o' Bells are just as worthwhile!

Jolly good; keep up the good work.

Well-kept Wilkins cider, but kept hidden away, so do ask.

A regular place for me to eat in the evening when working in Somerset - has maintained a pretty high standard for at least 15 years. Never had a bad beer here and the food is reliable and varied, if sometimes a bit dull and stodgy. Certainly worth a recommedation and though in the back-streets, it is well signposted.

Returned after a 12mth respite and with my Welsh partner in tow.plus my mother/sister. Today we tried the oldspot sausage and mash,my sister opting for the braised steak in red wine.Yet again thumbs up all round,we can safley recomend the good quality food of drink, and have not been disappointed in any of our visits.

We like this pub as it does very nice vegetarian food which isn't the usual quiche or pasta bake. Beer is usually ok.

Found this pub by accident and very glad I did. The food was wonderful and although it was a quiet mid-week lunchtime the landlord was welcoming and the atmosphere friendly and relaxed. off the beaten track but well worth going to.

I have been fequenting this pub for some months now along with various friends and familly.I take the farmhouse cider myself and or the mild when avaliable. We always have a meal from the specials board/menu,every one in our group ,always say how good the meal and service is,none us can fault.

Appears rather unfortunately to have gone downhill. stopped for food and a pint just after Midday. No staff evident though door was open. Eventually one of the Landlords appeared, a most sullen character who was not at all willing to talk. Ordered beer, which to be fair was in excellent condition and food which took over 45 mins to appear due to the fact that they had a function on, which I did not realise or was not informed of by mein host. If we had been in a hurry it could have made life awkward! That said food was good and freshly prepared. Hopefully just a one off blip

With all the great reviews I was a little bit disappointed. The ales selection seemed a bit mundane and as alehouses puts it: the carpet seemed to deaden any rogue pub atmosphere. All in all, a nice place to stop for a meal after the nightmares of Clark's Village
YoYo - 6 Dec 2007 18:50
food dominated pub. good condition ale usually available but the not the most imaginative selection.
nice carpets deaden any rogue pub atmosphere that may try to develop.
alehouses - 24 Jul 2007 15:23
Popped in on Saturday on my way back from Street. Three real ales on, including a mild brewed down the road: all three in excellent condition. Enjoyed a pleasant chat about ale with the landlord, then made my way closer to home. The perfect antidote to a morning amongst the sweaty masses in Street and Clarks Village.

Visited on Saturday with a friend. What a great pub! Ticks all the right boxes, ale was superb I really enjoyed the Black As Yer 'At from Glastonbury Ales.Landlord and lady were most welcoming.I don't live in the area but hope to return soon one evening to enjoy some of the good food on offer and more ales of course!

Superb Pub tucked away in Ashcott village but well signposted. Excellent selection of beers from local breweries such as Moor and Glastonbury and a superb reasonably priced selection of home cooked food.
ahscum - 30 May 2005 11:35
Excellent variety of beers. Eat in the bar area or a separate non-smoking dining room from an extensive and reasonably priced menu or from a board of "specials" that are normally sufficient to satisfy any palate.
Friendly staff and family owned.
