this pub has sadly been a mini mart for some time, I never went in there (hangs head) although i was always endlessly planning to, I met the staff when they manned a first class beer tent at some low key fete in Walthamstow, their barrel of London Pride was A1
anyway, closed and gone, sadly

Just been sold at auction. New owners' intentions not yet known. Enjoy it while you can - how many W/stow pubs boast a thriving folk club, open mic, blues, rock and quiz nights AND several real ales? We don't want to lose it - and we don't want another overnight conversion into a betting shop.

Hey Folkie66, how can you say the pub is getting worse 'day by day' when you then say you do not go in there? Be fair at least! Every time I have been in there the beer is superb, maybe the atmosphere will pick up now that you have gone to the village. They have only just done that place up and it was a dire place to drink in before. You should have seen the Plough before it was refurbished a few years ago. As for the garden, it is winter!
Used to have a good atmosphere. I personally think it's getting worse day by day, so much that I stopped going there and started frequenting the Village Pub, which is a much friendlier and nicely decorated pub with a very nice beer garden. And I'm not surprised to see many of the Plough's customers in there.
I was in the Plough last week, is good to see that the music room as a new decoration, is alot warmer and welcome, the beer is still very good (try the Winter Brew). good things are happening in this pub. Nice to see that tradiction is still alive in Walthamstow.
Went in last week and had some lovely Fullers Ale. Now seems to be Cask Marque as well which is good. Even better is the news that the Old Witch who I believe was married to one of the owners has been sent packing. Horrible woman was she, used to stand by the bar snarling at customers and was as miserable as sin. Still a great old place and even better with her gone!
This, for me, is definitely one of the better pubs in Walthamstow. Has a great atmosphere and a superb range of well kept beers, there are often live events in the back room which adds to the whole package, oh and there is a cab office next door for when you have had a touch too much fun.

Beer is nectar! All of them!
Still serving EXCELLENT Fuller's beers :- ESB, London Pride, Discovery, Porter. Coming soon in time for Xmas THEAKSTON's 'OLD PECULIER' on draught
Still serving excellent FULLER's real ales and the occasional guest beer deservedly receiving its 'Cask Marque' earlier this year. All the refurb work completed in the summer, and plenty of room for the smokers in the large beer garden at the rear Price Guide : ESB & Porter @ 3.00 / London Pride and Discovery @ 2.70 per pint

Nice pub, got a good feeling before I walked in and was met with a smile and good service. Beer was good. I like the fact there is an entertainment bar, its not massive but that adds to the appeal for me. Good to know there is somewhere to go to see different types of entertainment too.
A good start, I shall return.
Well worth a visit. I challenge anyone to have a pint of the excellently kept ESB and not enjoy it! Good atmosphere and nice staff. Highly recommended.
Just to respond to previous contributor "RickyBoy", I can confirm that "The Sweet Fan" still does the occasional quiz on a Sunday. I know this for certain, because it is me! Thanks for the compliment!
Nice pub, good atmosphere. All the real ales are well kept especially the London Pride. Varied entertainment in the back room most weekends. Decent quiz on Sunday evenings but a shame "the Sweet fan" has been stopped from doing them as he was good. Probably works in a different pub now. Overall a decent boozer. One of the best in the area.

Thank you for the positive comments Miu. We wanted to contact you direct, but were unable to, as your details are not shown. The main bar is due for a major refurbishment this year. With the introduction of the smoking ban, we were under pressure to do what we could (weather permitting) whilst at the same time keeping the pub open to fulfil our obligations to the Acts that had been booked in advance. We hit some unexpected snags as well. We had to take out an old chimney stack that was in the way of the enlarged doorway and then had to move a metal staircase outside. It was not a simple task and we had to hire heavy lifting gear. It is for these reasons that the decorations to the front bar have been delayed. We welcome your comments and can only assure you that we have our customers best interests at heart. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their continued support over the years. We do hope that you have had a wonderful Christmas and we wish you all a temendous New Year!

Nice friendly pub. Was there new year's eve and it was very good. the atmosphere was nice and the staff hard working and pleasant.Nice mixture of people of varied ages. the only negative is the fact that the owner, Mr Ruffy has not finished the works on the beer garden and inside the pub. It could do with a lick of painting and the floors varnished. But due to the friendliness of the staff and the good atmosphere i will definitely keep going there. And george the cat is a character, just beware' cos he tends to scratch when annoyed.
Excellent pub, one of the best in the area, very good quality real ales, the staff are very friendly and professional, hopefully the works will finish soon.

Had a lovely selection of real ales. I had 4 pints of lovely ESB. It was a Sunday and I popped into the back Bar for 6 and was entertained by the Folk Club. Had a lovely time, but the after for pints of ESB anybody would! The Staff were reasonably good with quick service or at least an acknowledgement that you was not holding out money for the fun of it! Nice place and nice beer!

I went there last night for the quiz, lots of student types
Good pub great entertainment one of the better pubs in Waltham Forest !!
Ha ha ha! Could'nt believe what has happened to this place! Went in last Friday. Last time I came to UK years ago you could hear the out of tune warbling of a Kareoke singer as you got of the train. The place is quite relaxing now with beardy ale drinkers and teacher types.
Had a lovely couple of half pints of Portugese lager served by a lovely looking young girl who stayed looking lovely until she opened her mouth to reveal a missing front tooth. One of the regulars told me it had just fell out and not to laugh!
While I was there, more beardies came in (including bearded ladies!) The place was soon crowded because of a famous musician who I had'nt heard of but everyone was keen to watch this guy. On the whole I found it quite an interesting place now and as a cat lover liked the big Tom Cat who pounced up demanding to be stroked!

As a local drinker of some 25 years standing ( although I sit down for the football...) this is the best pub in the Wood Street area ! Well-kept FULLER's ales and an extensive range of other beers , wines & spirits for the more discerning drinker . The big screen in the back bar shows football when no other function is booked . Recently I've seen CHRIS DIFFORD ( ex-Squeeze ) , GLEN MATLOCK ( ex- SEX PISTOLS ) and an unintentionally hilarious ROLLING STONES tribute band. Good transport links as well. Gordon Brown's March Budget put 1p on a pint of bitter and the LONDON PRIDE and other beers promptly went up 10p a pint !!! 2.70 is about average for the area , though
There is a quiz every Sunday night, the first Sunday of the month being an excellent music quiz, even though we lost miserably!
Really nice! Great beer (London Pride!), no hassle, good staff, good dcor too. Wood Street Station directly opposite is handy, you can actually see the departures board from the bar. On the down side it's on Wood Street, arguable the most sinister feeling road in east London.
The small back room is a great intimate venue for seeing live acts, whilst the bar at the front is where the local go to drink well kept Fullers beer or the Portuguese managers' native brew Sagres.
i have been to the folk club on several occasions and cannot believe the quality of the acts. the place was full of regulars- not one 'unsavoury' character in sight- what was that comment all about? the staff came round at half time with plates of sandwiches. i have brought my friends to this pub on other nights, and have always enjoyed myself. i think this is a great local pub, but beware the pub cat george- bit of a scratcher.
Great Pub, good choice of real ales, very friendly staff. I'll go back again.

I was surprised to read the negative comments posted about the Plough Inn. It is a fair comment to say that the pub is undergoing changes but these are all to the good. The last few months have seen the excellent Walthamstow Folk Club take up residence of a Sunday night and this, apart from attracting some of the most respected artists in the UK (Dick Gaughan was the guest last Sunday and it doesnt get much better than that)but has also attracted a a very decent crowd - many of whom seem set to become regulars. Over and beyond this a glance at the 'what's on' screen of their website for the first quarter of 2007 reveals a series of concerts that would rival any musical venue of similar size in the UK. Whilst I agree that the standard of entertainment presented at the Plough had fallen over the last year or so it is clear that some real energy and intelligent planning has been introduced and the future, if the current website is anything to go by, is looking really bright. It's about time that the east End had a real music venue and I think the Plough Inn deserves a geat deal of credit for having the courage to take up this challenge. It has my vote... Oh and the real ale is exceallent....

Went here on Friday night for a quick one, reasonable atmosphere, good range of beers, not a bad place all in, will be trying it on a few more occaisions.
Went here for a gig last night and despite e-mailing the pub for info (timings, ticket availability etc), they never responded. Went along anyway only to find the gig cancelled. Even now the website says "tickets available". If it wants to take itself seriously as an entertainment venue then it needs to sort out its communication problem and keep things up to date! The pub itself is an extended Victorian corner pub with a fairly standard layout and basic decor with bare wood and plain windows but quite friendly and welcoming. The big plus is the good well kept range of Fullers ales including Discovery, ESB and Festival mild. Having checked out the other local pubs, the Plough easily coms out as the winner and they do get some well known musicians and comedians appearing here. I will hopefully return for other gigs but the lesson here is ring the venue if travelling as the website is unreliable and they obviously don't read their e-mails.

I agree with anon, not my sort of place at all.

On the face of it, a decent boozer, but I never feel comfy in here. Something a little non atmospheric for my liking. Good comedy and music variety in here but watch you don't get mugged when you leave - its right next to Wood Street station and its a hole for that sort of thing. As the security cameras don't even work at the station (RIP JOHN), which is absymal, unfortunately you have to be extra careful when leaving.
Oh and someone spiked my girlfriends drink in there once which is not a bad reflection on the pub itself, but why go here when you can enjoy great music and top beer in the flower pot down the road?

A nice pub with a really excellent range of beer, all nicely kept. Hoegaarden, Leffe, a range of Fuller's ales on tap and in bottles, and even some Erdinger wheat beer stashed in the fridge. Sadly lacking in atmosphere, though - it's a bit too big, and doesn't have enough customers, basically. Support the Plough! It is a good pub.
Great little boozer serving a good variety of well kept beer. Friendly punters and plenty of entertainment throughout the year, well worth a visit if you haven't been there before.
Excellent house - good beer well kept, friendly atmosphere, wide range of music, comedy etc in back room....a gem. Now why can't we have a pub this good in central Walthamstow?
Unique pub for East London what with the backroom for music and comedy etc.. Seems out of place location-wise although local to me. Still one of the best boozers in East London though.
its a wickid pub and the bar staff are all very good lookin especialy the only boy. but ithink they should get paid more 7.50 per hour should do it
Improving all the time, what with new (independent) owners, a good manager and good quality beer (Fullers - a guest beer wouldnt go amiss),. Good quiz on Sundays and regular music comedy and plays midweek. Got new telly's in for the footy as well.
Improvin generally - gradually losin its old scruffy-ruffy-inn image - keep it up!

excellent little boozer. Sky Sports, friendly staff, backroom for theatre and music events, large screen etc. pool table gone - probably good thing as now its a classy little place where you feel at home in a second.

Great pub, recently done up from the horrible thing it used to be. Sky Sports for weekend matches and a pool table that's affordable. Large backroom that holds lots of events, including comedy nights and occassional theatre pieces.

Might start brewing soon as well!

Adventurous local with one bar still under construction. Main bar a timewarp to the 1950s. Occasional piano music - phone pub for details. Fullers pride & ESB in superb condition - show your appreciation and ask for a jug. No food. Light, cool jazz & easy listening background music. Pool table. Directly opposite Wood Street Station, and served regularly by bus 230 until midnight. Definitely worth a visit.
