Came here in 2006 on a walk. This week, i am completing a similar walk - along the Thames from Caversham and then onto the Kennet, where this little boozer sits by the gas tank.
Three punters and one of those was a Labrador. Decent pint of Plain Ales.

This little gem always has well kept local beers available, excellent food and a friendly welcome. What more could you want?

Small canalside pub with 2 other customers on our Saturday lunchtime visit. The beer selection was varied - Loddon Hullabaloo, Ascot Red IPA & Plain Incognito. Ciders on were Mr Whiteheads Strawberry, Tutts Clump Dry Cider, Perry, Royal County & Rum Cask. They seemed to be undertaking some refurbishment to the one side of the bar. So we had to use the ladies facilities! As previously stated, the landlord is friendly. Nice location and recommended.

Cracking pub; felt instantly at home. In fact, intending to just have a quick pint I stayed for three and ate there too (decent pub grub, served til late daily). Nothing fancy, friendly staff and locals. Lovely spot by the Kennet canal. Although billed as a cider house it does a good range of ales, well kept.

Love the ciders! Great little pub :)
it's not up for sale now!
Lovely little pub - great selection of ales and ciders, lovely garden, good food.
For the 3rd consecutive year we started our pub crawl of Reading here as we've yet to be disappointed by the beer & it's a proper pub. Liked the new beer garden & the new management & as they were having a beer festival we were forced to stay for a 2nd as the choice was so good. Tried the food for the first time & the scampi was excellent as was the homemade tartare sauce.
It's up for sale!!
Been popping in the new beer garden recently and it is a fine and relaxing place to fleet the time carelessly with some great beer and intriguing local ciders.
Very nice little riverside pub. A good selection of ales was on offer when I visited at the end of April, augmented at that time by a beer festival. I thought the atmosphere in the pub very friendly and the staff behind the bar were very helpful. Highly recommended.
As with all good pubs there was the obligatory eccentric in the corner and a great beer for the summer weather in Sharp's Atlantic IPA. Look forward to returning.
Another good night at the Jolly Anglers on Saturday.
Fine music, great beer and lots of happy people.
B&B was reasonably priced with super breakfast.
Thanks.
one of the best pubs in Reading for its location and its friendly atmosphere from landlord, staff and locals. The open mike nights are a great pleasure with many people taking to the mic. The ales are kept very well and currently it seems a whole array of ciders on show! Keep up the good work. :-D
Hilarious! Up against the Retreat for ciders! Keep taking the magic mushrooms mate!
Enjoyed an excellent pint of 'Bodge' last weekend along with good Youngs Ordinary and Anastasia Exile Stout, all at the very reasonable price of 2.75...
There was a good atmosphere and mix of visitors and locals, plus the bar staff including Cheryl provided excellent customer service.
Good luck for the future.

Those of you who are planning to re-visit shouldn't wait too long as I have heard it is closing down again.
Nice location. Three beers: dull Youngs, so-so Sharps & Jolly Good Bodge(unknown origin).Tried the Sharps which was well kept.Friendly pub dog. Very quiet, but certainly seems to have potential, so will probably give it another go on my next Reading visit.

Cannot concur with the comments of the reviewers below. On our visit this weekend whilst cycling the Kennet and Avon canal, the three ales available were Youngs Bitter, Lodden Russett and Kennet Side Jolly Good Bodge, and the ones we tried were in very good condition albeit served a tad on the cold side. There were also 4 Cider polypins on the bar, and talking to the landlord (who I guess is the Jon referred to below), he will be focussing more on Ciders and Perrys to try and differentiate from some of the other offerings in the area. The landlord is trying to rebuild the trade after the enforced shut down and trying to get it back to a solid community pub. He currently offers price discounts on both beer and food to card carrying CAMRA members and a guest (which is a nice touch), runs open mic night twice a week for budding musicians and has a student night with discounted prices to NUS members on Wednesdays. And anything which tries to drag the RU students out of the chrome bars in the town centre for a real pub experience should be applauded. The Landlord still has some work to do to make this one of the best pubs in Reading, but I wish him well in his endeavours and he will certainly have my support the next time I am in reading

It's high time Jon realised he can't run a pub and perhaps choose a career more worthy of his talents. Such as litter picking. (No offence to litter pickers!) Before this (could be lovely) pub disappears for good, which would be a real shame.

Despite all the fanfare when this place re-opened earlier this year it has spiralled downhill with amazing rapidity. The Manager appears to have little interest in the place (I suppose it's just a job to him) and customer service is not a top priority, unfortunately neither is cleanliness. Such a shame and a waste of the great potential this pub could have in the right hands.
Unfortunately the hope when this place reopened has largely gone down the pan, along with the beer quality. Beer lines don't appear to be cleaned; mercifully the 6 ales reported is now rather less.
The landlord appears to be barring most of the regulars too. A great pity - there is a great pub here in search of the right person running it.

Pressed Rat & Warthog is a Triple fff Brewery beer not Ringwoods
Yes - this was on BBC News.
That is really sad news but on the other hand I am glad I had a chance to sample a great pint here back in May b4 Enterprise threw it on the trash pile :( 7/10(WAS)
Just been informed that the pub has closed again! My source informs me that
"Bad news I'm afraid. The Jolly Anglers closed last night.John 'was only told at 1430' yesterday.Apparently Enterprise Inns have sold it on 'for residential development'. I only found out last night at 1030 and went down to the closing down party - all beer 1 per pint. There was as you can imagine a lot of p****d up p****d off people there."
Sad days...

Excellent beer festival over the Easter weekend. A landlord who knew his beers and kept them well. A good start for this often maligned pub with its chequered history. We can only wish it well. [The nearby Fishermans Cottage opened at the weekend but was obviously not attracting the punters who chose the Anglers instead.]
Hi Everyone, The Jolly Anglers will be opening on Friday 13th of February - a great day for us, come and say hello to the new Manager - Noel. I hope to see you there.
Closed and boarded up.
a good all round locals pub, all the better for being slightly out of town, so you don't get too many idiots in, it's a nice 10 minutes stroll along the canal, good range of guest beers as well
i think the pub is geting to way it used to be busy a good freindly atsmophere what a great pub and a fantastic landlord well done to him to being so down to earth and making the customers feel warm and welcome and if anyone on facebook type in the jolly anglers fan club it really is a great pub
I hear the revolving door spins again - expect another landlord soon.
Beer quality hasn't been quite to the standards Max set, though still relatively good.
i think this pub is going in the right directions and its in a good location with the river just there for relaxsation and also having west sussex harveys bitter fantastic..
Now re-opened and good to see the real ale (four usually) still available (handy poster in the window tells you what's on.
Yesterday I overheard the landlady of the nearby Fishermans Cottage discussing a rumour that the Jolly Anglers might be re-opening under a new name - "The Weasel & Commander" !!!
Has been closed but there maybe plans to reopen hopefully with a more hard working and efficient management.
Landlord Max is off this weekend (20/3) for good.
Money has dried up. Beer is disappearing fast - get down there ASAP.
A crying shame, I only discovered this place recently.
A GBG entry for good reason - 3 ales (Harvey's Best as standard, other 2 locals) in good form.
Pub future uncertain. I'd be surprised if it remains this good.
Good luck Max.
Pleasant little pub by the canal side, home to three well served ales usually featuring Harveys Sussex Best, a Loddon brew and another guest.
Pickled eggs are served up with salt and peppers cellars - classy!
TV on for sports, rest of the inside is nice enough, without being overly memorable. Regulars are a chatty bunch.
Well worth the walk for the beer, a good place to take in the footy with an ale or three. Worth its perennial Good Beer Guide entry.
So this is the place alongisde the canal. Alright if you're a local otherwise can be a tad depressing...
Ok pub, does the ranting tramp still stop off in the beer garden and scare away punters?
Small, two room, canalside pub. Nice to sit outside in summer.
