Good beer but one to avoid. I bought one pint and three halves of Adnams plus one half of Wadworth 6X. Was charged £15.40 which I didn't think of questioning at the time as I had already had to ask for the pint (mine) to be topped up. It's a pub where they just pull it up and put it in front of you before it's settled which is their way of telling you that's what you're getting. Anyway the pint was filled and I paid. Took drinks to table then realised the five drinks I'd bought only measured up to three pints. So, over a fiver a pint. The till screen shows the staff what to press for the order and adds it up itself so there was either a mistake and I was overcharged or it's just too pricey in there. Was served by the older bloke with tattoos. Guvnor perhaps, I don't know and maybe never will as I'll walk past next time.

Hi, I would just like to say that I had a great meal in the Black horse tonight. My husband and I both ordered the fresh Billingsgate cod, it was a little more expensive but it was worth it! Maybe the best fish I have tasted in many years. Amazing fish, great chips, good beer, lovely pub, nice people, what more could you ask for?

Was once a really good, quiet, country pub where you could enjoy reasonable home cooked food, good conversation and witty banter without excessively noisy music and loud mouths but now it seems to be going downhill fast and the new management don't fill me with confidence.
Looks like I'll have switch to a new local and there plenty of good one's to choose from but I prefer The Boot in Sarratt which is consistently good, very friendly with fantastic food in a great setting and the Land of Lib in Chorleywood / Heronsgate for it's excellent real ale.
It's a pity really, I'm going to miss the Black Horse but not for long and I won't miss the bar staff or he inconsistent food or the sometimes completely empty evenings or the local drunks!

Was once a fine pub, now really loosing its touch, It depends what time you go to the pub to how you will be treated as a customer, evening staff are always very pleasant, helpful, and friendly, nice atmosphere. In the day time, the staff are appalling, bad attitude, rude, normally drunk, enough to put you off ever going back.

Doing the Chess valley walk last Sunday and decided to duck into this pub just before the heaven's opened....
I stayed and and had one of the best Sunday roast dinners I have had for a long time.. I noticed that in the evening the were hosting a music event so I took my time hoping to see abit... Well what can I say !!!!
I'm a music fan anyway but what a night... The pub slowly filled up and the atmosphere changed from a lovely dinning country pub to a full on live music night .....
I asked behind the bar if this was a normal evening and was told that the pub was home to the Chorleywood open mic night and it takes place once a month..
This pub is a knock out ,
The ales were well kept and believe me you can't knock the food.
If it had not rained I would have missed this pub entirely.... Also dog friendly......
What more could you ask......

Cracking Pub, Ive been coming here for around 3 months now. Very friendly Atmosphere. Very helpful staff, and some very friendly locals, which go out of their way to make you feel welcome. I have been to A phew pubs over the years, and this really is a change from the rest. There just some happy buzz in the air. I have now made this my regular, and I hope the good friendship to continue. Very Dog friendly, a nice crisp pint. Prefect. Dave & Lotty

Lovely setting for a pub, with nice views of the valley out front. There were a few ales on but only the Adnams seemed in tip-top condition. Despite that we had a great night as the clientele and staff were great fun and the place had a very nice atmosphere.

Popped in to day 6X and Youngs very nice But the staff behind the bar!!! Surly would be the understatement of the year we ordered 1 Sausage ploughmans and 1Sausage and Onion baggette bearing in mind that there was only 7 people in we waited for 30 mins for food to come out and when it did Sausage ploughmans =1 sausage teaspoon Branston pickle spoon of coleslaw plate of limp lettuce 1 dried roll Cracking little pub but let down by poor quality food and very poor customer service If you only go in for a beer then you might be surprised but don't expect good pub grub and a smiling welcome

My wife and I were out for a walk at the beginning of January and literally stumbled across this place and WOW what a find! If there's a pub serving a better roast dinner I've yet to find it - my wife had beef and I had pork and it was delicious. There was a good range of cask ales as well but couldn't really try as driving. Certainly be going back for that Sunday roast though!! Full makrs to the chef!!

Recently visited the pub for the first time and was most impressed with the food. All home made - my steak & kidney pie with five veg was superb. The best pub lunch I've had in years and a nice drop of Adnams to go with it. Pub was pretty crowded with what looked like a lot of regulars, so it made for a good atmosphere. Best arrive early with a good appetite as portions are huge.

i love this pub and visit regularly. it's the perfect atmosphere it's warm in the winter with the stone set fire place, get yourself a place by the tv and snuggle down with a good pint. and cool in the summer with the sun shinning there is nothing better than sitting on the grass or in the beer garden with a refreshing pint of IPA. with the atmosphere of dog walkers around you. i love all the staff esp. Allan (landlord), he's a scouse bastard but he's one of the funniest people i know. the food is always delicious and the prices are good. i would deffinatly recomend it!

I have spent many evenings at this pub and find it to be very reasonable and the food is superb value for money, the log fire is the best in the area. There is a pub up the road called the Land of Liberty, CAMRA reckon their fire is the best for miles, dont think so !! try the Black horse you wont regret it, nice friendly staff and locals !!

this is a lovely pub.. I am not a regular but have never had trouble.,.. its old fashioned and comfortable inside in a really pretty area ideal for walking, dogs etc.. the pub is dog friendly throughout and the log fire is very cosy and homely. its only bad point is its really expensive.. drinks were overpriced and food isnt cheap.. not everyone in chorleywood is loaded!! its worth a visit.but bear in mind weekends in summer its jam packed

Really nice local pub with real character, but a shame about the Liverpudlian landlord, who is seriously into WW2 television programmes and golliwog dolls amongst others, which are really covering racial tendencies, however apart from this, the local community and customer base are really quite welcoming to all and ready to integrate you into their association, staff behind the bar are excellent just be prepared for a degree of bantering!

I am partly of Asian heritage and went into this pub a couple of years ago because a friendof min was working behind the bar. After an hour or so another person walked in, obviously a friend of the owner who is an old Liverpudlian. The owner must have thought I had left as he said loudly enough for ayone inside tohear "oh it's you, I was worried it was another f*cking p*ki!". I was extremely shocked at this outburst of racism and needless to say have not been back since.

Spitfire, Adnams, 6X, Dartmoor Ipa. Heading straight to the bar I hardly noticed the nice little area at the front which had great stone slabs for a floor and a wood burning fire, this was where some locals had gathered as we left, tv was on low and the area had a good chatty ambience. To the right we found some comfortable wing-back leather chairs, this section is carpetted and displayed brasses and plenty of horsey prints, beyond this to the rear was a cordoned-off dining area. Plenty of choice on the blackboard menu, mains avg 8-9.

I love it. What a venue. We love to walk and then go for a pint there. A must visit!
|
A friendly boozer but I think it's mainly for locals and regulars. The usual selection of beers on tap.

A nice and clean pub with the usual selection of ales. The staff seemed friendly. I visited in the middle of Easter Monday afternoon and the place was quite busy so they must be doing something right.

Wonderful pub and location. Good food, great ales, including at present at least Deuchars IPA. Cannot recommend it enough.

Lovely pub, friendly athnosphere, popular with walkers on the common, dogs welcome. Good range of beers, always several real ales but my wife sometimes complains about the wine as her tastes are very fussy. Good vaule pub food and plenty of it for under a tenner, resturant always full on Sunday lunchtimes. No problem with parking and set in a lovely quiet area in the middle of Chorley Wood Common. Take the Met line out from Baker Street and visit the Rose and Crown as well.

Comfortable country pub with friendly staff and patrons. 5 real ales (one on gravity) and decent food. 7/10.
