user reviews of the Stickle Barn Tavern, Great Langdale

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Went in here years roughly twenty years ago I'd imagine and absolutely hated it, vowing never to return. (Seem to remember it all being set upstairs for some reason??) Went in here again over Easter weekend this year in glorious weather and thought it was very nice indeed. Admittedly, I didn't eat, nor did I sit inside - but I did enjoy my pint of the Barngates stout and the welcome from the chatty barman - going outside to drink my beer on the patio area in the shade of a big umbrella. Would try again for an evening next time I'm in the valley.

Had used this pub several times in the past and really enjoyed the good food and great beer, and the staff were lovely, BUT the last time we visited was AFTER the National Trust had taken over in 2012.

A walking group of about 15 of us had decided this was a good lunch stop - WRONG!

We all agreed that the food was somewhere between mediocre and awful AND very expensive to boot.

The other pub nearby that the NT also run gets terrible reviews as well - the NT are great at saving stately homes but absolute rubbish at catering. They have ruined what was once a great pub and none of us will return there either as individuals or as a group.

We went recently. We were in the ODG but the service was so lousy we didn't order food and gave the Sticklebarn a try. I was impressed by the friendly welcome then a great beer selection and really lovely snack. I heartily recommend this pub.

Excellent spot for morning breakfast (full english with tea/coffee for 7) with a good choice of beer and fair choice of food for the evening. As mentioned previously the menu is fairly uninspiring compared to the nearby ODG, which seems to have a more home made feel and certainly compared to The Britannia in Elterwater. The beer though is always on good form and the staff, notably the manager, couldn't be more welcoming.

A bit smarter and touristy than the ODG , but great beer and food with a much appreciated wood burner roaring away after a tab up the hills. Dog friendly(free biscuits, just a donation to the mountain rescue) and good seating outside, just need to solve the wiff of the sceptic tanks, but still a top pub. so good we never made it to the New dungeon ghyll next door.

A jolly decent cup of tea served here. Everything very friendly and helpful. Good value food. Plus you can see the weather report to confirm why you couldn't see beyond 2 metres on Pike O Stickle...

Great place for an after-walk pint. Unspoilt bare / traditional interior. Lovely pint of Black Sheep bitter.

Also had a very nice coffee from the hotel next door.

Good Saturday night in the SBT after hoofing it from Langdale to Scafell Pike and back. The Coniston Oatmeal stout was especially on form as was the Old Peculiar. Preferred the version of 'Fog on the Tyne' by Gazza rather the act that was on!

Guess what, I did do the lottery and got 5 numbers up. Must get Maureen to throw my rucksack off Harrison again, and the pub may even sort the cider out.
Ciderchap - 29 Apr 2010 12:30
Yipee someone handed my rucksack in and unbelievably it's still intact complete with contents, better go and do the lottery!

I would just state the facts here. Went in for a pint at around 10pm Saturday 10th April after a long day walk. I was joined by 2 others (white persons) and they got served before me. After those 2 punters' been served, the 1 barmaid wnt out to collect empty glasses, another went to check the pump and the third one headed straight to the kitchen. I only got served when one of the barmaids returned from our glass collecting round. I have studied, lived and worked in this country for over 15 years and been to pubs from Wick in Scotland to Truro in Cornwall, and I can tell the difference between busy barmaids and just being unwelcomed. Really regretted not going to the Hikers bar attached to the Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel instead.

Some of the live entertainment is cracking especially John Crampton but wish the pub would do a decent real cider. Location alone however is worth the visit. Hope someone finds my rucksack which 'fell' from the top of Harrison Stickle on Easter Sunday! That's what happens when you take mad Maureen out with you.

This is the favoured eating destination as it's within one mile of our accomodation, first floor has lots more seating and pub has a good range of ales including one from the local Barngates brewery. Food comes quickly and is filling, entertainment is Ok and very occasionally funny, other times the folky stuff is not to my taste though. Always nice to come here when the walk is over and I do like their Stickle toffee pudding.

By Cumbrian standards this pub is way overpriced.

The food is of the microwave standard you would expect in a 2 for a fiver pub but charged without the discount.

I wonder what percentage of the price of a pint goes towards fuelling the landlords Jag?

On a plus note, it is a great pub and, despite the prices, there is usually a good selection of quality beers.

The live entertainment is a valid reason for choosing this pub over one of the others in the valley, especially if Pete Lashley is performing.

Once again the food was good - but how about something on the menu more local - rabbit, trout, lamb? The beer choice was very good - Cumberland Ale, Coniston Old Man and a couple of other real ales. Bar staff very friendly indeed especially compared to the Old Hotel down the road.
BothamsAshes - 15 May 2008 14:42
Beer choice is not as good as up the road at the Old Dungeon Ghyll though the Jennings and Coniston Bluebird were both very good. This place scores on excellent service and much much better food than the Old Dungeon.

Descending the very popular path from Stickle Tarn on a preternaturally warm day in late October I was able to compare both the Stickle Barn and New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, 50 yards apart in the same complex. The Stickle Barn had 5 beers on (Coniston Old Man, Theakstons Bitter and OP, Deuchars IPA and Barngates Catnap) whilst the New Dungeon Ghyll just had two Thwaites beers. At both pubs, the food was pretty ordinary but at 5 for snacks and main meals for between 7-9 was cheap for the Lakes. (So both are more for taking on fuel on a walk than a great lunch out but Id say the Stickle Barn seemed slightly better.) Whilst the main room of the Barn is a bit cheerless, there is a second cosier room with a lit stove. (The New Dungeon Ghyll is somewhere between the two in feel.) The main difference however was that it took 20 minutes to get served at New Dungeon Ghyll whilst, although generally busier, the Stickle Barn seemed a much more efficient operation. For a beer sitting outside, looking at the view, the Stickle Barn seems the best bet of all three pubs nearby. But inside, Id say the Old Dungeon Ghyll half a mile away is by far the best in atmosphere. (And sadly the New Dungeon Ghyll seems to have little to recommend it at the moment.)

Good beer. Live singer enterainment. The cooked breakfasts are awesome, had trouble climbing gimmer crag with my belly full of the breakfast mind.

I USED TO WORK AT THE STICKLE A FEW YEARS AGO AND I THINK THE PUB HAS TO BE THE BEST IN THE WHOLEM OF THE UNITED KINGDOM! GREAT FOOOD, FRIENDLY STAFF AND FANTASTIC MUSIC, ESPECIALLY IF PETE LASHLEY IS PLAYING!

Good ale, reasonable food & great location.

Well kept ale. Tasty but overpriced food. Very basic accommodation available but not recommended. Music & fruit machines rather detract from any atmosphere this place might have had. Nice friendly cat.

Pretty basic last time I went. Average for beer and food but can easily do worse
