Bull's Head, Craswallback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Had a meal in here a few months back and I thought it was a fantastic place. Can�t understand peoples beef with the landlady, I had a long chat with her in the garden and found her to be a delight. She has her ideas about how to run things, and won�t be told otherwise, but its her place so fair enough. Trouble is, I think the name �pub� is a bit misleading. This is more a private restaurant. Only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday for lunchtime and evening service and the staff like you to book ahead, as we did, so they can reserve you a spot in the limited space they have to work with. As a result, the place is very food orientated. Turn up out the blue for a quick pint and you may well be disappointed, especially if the weather is too poor to sit outside as you will most likely have to stand. A bit of forward planning though, and you will have an amazingly good meal, served by very pleasant staff with some very good Gwatkins Cider. Only complaint could be the Hooray Henry set who pitch up pretty often from Hay, but they generally like a drink as much as the next man, so you can usually forgive them.

Broden, salutes, top gooner - thanks mateys, you wrote my review for me, we in the Real Ale Questers Rambling Club (both of us), spent hours walking here, beautiful hot sunny day - only to find the choice suddenly of only 2 real ales, paying for them, sitting down, then being told by the miserable landlady that we couldn't sit down (in the empty bar), as it was reserved for diners 'in an hour's time'. When a protest was voiced - politely - , she promptly turned her back and ignored us. Against our better judgement, six months later, we returned in the evening, and were treated like second-class citizens as we were not interested in eating. Luckily this time our money wasn't taken before our minds were made up. Swerve rating out of ten - eleven.

Enjoyed lunch at this pub a few years ago and looked forward to returning today. What a let-down! Wanted coffee while waiting to meet friends for lunch and was told coffee can only be served after a meal! What happened to the "huffers" the pub was well-known for? The only choice for lunch seemed to be a ploughman's at �11.50 or soup. We were told on the phone that the pub was open from 12 til 3, but they failed to point out that they stopped taking food orders at 2. We ended up with an excellent lunch in Hay-on-Wye and won't be returning to The Bulls Head again.

Sought this place out after a morning in the hills. Wished we hadn't bothered. Really felt as though the landlady wished we hadn't bothered either.
Begrudginly served our drinks - although I think she was hoping we'd decide to leave after she'd told us we were too late to have food. She only had one beer on (I forget the name) - I would have tried it had there been time - but I needed a thirst quencher first and the bar closed on us.
Limited opening hours (I think closed on Monday, Tuesday and Sunday evenings, then only open 12-3 and 6-11 the rest of the time.
This pub is in an ideal location and should be a dream destination for walkers in need of ale; but if it is always run this way then I'd be suprised if it survives.

Really pleased to find this pub has re-opened,now with more than decent food.Idyllic setting.Historic pub,flagstone floors.Bar section with old serving hatch and blackbord menus.Restaurant section with candlelit tables in the evening and collection of local guides and maps.
This pub used to be very popular but the food went down-hill for a couple of years.The new owner is an enterprising chef, and we really enjoyed our meal,especially the scallops, Chicken Kiev and homemade bread.No credit card facilities at present.

Good old pub with no bar and serving hatch, real ale from the cask. Good place to camp.

Six of us checked that there was no need to book a table (and this was confirmed on a sign by the gate) before venturing to The Bull's Head for lunch at 2pm this afternoon. The place looked great but we were disappointed to overhear, and I'm sure it was said for our benefit, that, having just turned up without booking, we were "...a pain in the arse." I suggest they make their bloody minds up! A disappointing end to an otherwise great weekend in the area.

Drove out to Craswall at lunchtime when too early for our B&B in Hay on Wye. The drive along the lanes is like being at Alton Towers but persevere as when you finally get there the food is great and the beer perfect. You will think about staying there overnight to take full advantage of the beer.

Fantastic real ales, incredible food, (strange enormous doorstep sandwiches called huffers) real log fires, perfect after a long walk, the kind of place you never want to leave.
