Popped in on a Sunday (about six months ago) and were told that they don't do Sunday lunch as "there's no call for it". So it was with trepidation that we called in for supper one Friday evening last month. There were bar meals available in the bar (lasagne, etc), but the attached restaurant is pretty much fish only. Nice pint of Young's best and a very well cooked Rainbow Trout (for me) and Beer Battered Fish and Chips (for Sir). Good service, with chatty waitress who asked if I would prefer my Trout served with or without its head. Will definitely return.

Had a nice meal on a Tuesday night with a group of friends - very quiet, which made a change - we could actually hear each other talk - no waitress service this particular night but the bar lady was a very good hostess. Typical pub food, very good value .My steak was lovely and well the black forest gatty was perfect and good size portions too, all washed down with a couple of bottles of good chardonnay.

micheal is full of fun but i do agree with duckdown2. Barbara is always moody and never smiles, if this carries on then i feel that the pub will go down hill and i don't think that no one wants to see the pub go out of business. she should try lightening up a bit and try smiling

well we all use the pub and have done for sometime now . Michael is fun and keeps a good pint , always welcomes us all and new comers to . but we find Barbara very moody with bad language towards some customers . we think she needs to try smiling . on the whole a good pub with good food . 90%

Visited on Fathers day after we remembered calling in once and had a really good meal. Pub has own parking so easy to park. The food was excellent I had the mixed grill which was a real meat feast, Wife had the roast chicken sunday lunch and the kids had Cheese burgers and chips, topped with real cheese and not the processed stuff. The service was quick, friendly and unlike a lot of places they even acknowledge that you are standing at the bar with a quick smile and "be with you in a minute". Thats someting so simple that a lot of places dont do. For pudding we had Black forest gateaux, Chocolate truffle cake and the kids had Home made strawberry jelly and ice cream. The beer was superb I had a Courage best and a Speckled Hen both well kept and the correct temperature. We like this pub and will definitely going back.

We also had a bad food experience here over the festive break they had run out of nearly all there supplies and the food was poorly presented not the birds usual standard we too were told that the chef was on his own and that there had been a problem with the delivery we did complain at the time but it didnt make the situation any better come on guys sort it out you've always had an excellent reputation for food

Actually for your information, this pubs food is absolutely, 100 percent, hot and there is no way you could have been waiting there for 45 minutes as, i know the waitress who works on Sundays and she would never have made you wait that long. When she came out and said to you that the chicken and turkey was off, she meant, it wasn't on the menu, so she offered you and your family alternative food to eat. I do beleive that the chef and the waitress were very accomadating to you and your family. The other thing was, if you are complaining about it now, then why didn't you complain about it when you was there!! I know that the pub can sometimes sound like a joke and believe me it is but, the food in the Bird In Hand, is always served hot and you do NOT wait around for 45 minutes!!!

On Sunday 28th December I booked a table for 6 in the restuarant at this pub and then increased the booking to 10 including 2 young children. The party were coming from various Surrey locations and we agreed to meet at 1.15pm. This was a family gathering , post Christmas, for my children and grandchildren whom I had not seen over the two days of Christmas. When we arrived we were told that chef was on his own and were given a "roast" menu only but told that chicken and turkey was "off". My daughter eats white meat only and, after being offered sausages and meat pie as an alternative (?), we finally managed to obtain cod as the only solution. The food took 45 mins to arrive and was not hot. The whole situation was embarrassing and humiliating and I only paid the bill to get out as quickly as possible (my wife had a very bad cold and just wanted to get home!). The pub had my home phone number and could easily have called and warned of the problems they were having BEFORE we all arrived ! I shall never set foot in this pub again and I advise any other visitor to think twice. Incidentally, the bill was not cheap and we would have been better off at a Harvester!

Think it'll start to improve now Barb & Foxy are on board they usually manage to turn things round not keen on the volume of the juke box but will persevere to see what happens

I was unfortunate enough to choose the this pub's B&B facilities for an overnight stay last weekend. The facilities were totally inadequate. Two wobbly hangars in a rather shaky wardrobe ,no shelves or towel rail in the bathroom, where there were notices to advise of problems with the loo and hot water, there was a used piece of soap on the basin.. Two pieces of rubbery bread to toast for breakfast. There was only one bedside table. We arrived to very cold room even though we had booked well ahead. There was half a baguette left in the chest of drawers with some tired looking blueberries. I could write more but this should warn anyone NOT to contemplate staying in this dreary place. The cost of 65 was 5 more than we had been quoted and totally ridiculous for what was provided.

heard this ones up for sale should be worth a re-visit bit too quiet for me but plesant enough
|
It's quieter than it used to be but it's still a nice little boozer
|
My local, not every bodies choice but I like it, quiet pleasant surroundings to enjoy a number of real ales. Only the very occasional chav element endured.
|
Popped in for a beer during the Xmas break, decent range of bitters but the pub is a bit on the quiet side for me no atmosphere
|
saw it yesterday, prior to that saw it in 1951, been to the air show at Farnbourough, the day before the DH 110 broke up, has altered for the worse...(area not pub) was bustling..change I suppose.. the lady at the garden centre who gave us directions to Mayford Green was lovely..
|
I like this pub and found the bar staff to be really nice, it is a bit on the quiet side but has a great menu good beer and a lovely garden.
|
Older persons pub, agree with previous comments about bar staff - they definiately aren't female friendly! Okay for a quiet night out but not top of my list for fun venues.
|
I was expecting something a little more up market in Mayford, prefer the Mayford Arms, at least the bar staff in there can be bothererd to serve you! The bar staff in this pub are either rude or man mad!
|
Pleasant enough pub, very relaxing atmosphere. Most of the clientelele are 45+, ideal if you're looking for a Quiet pint. Reasonable selection of ales. If your looking for something lively then look elsewhere.
