this pub looks great outside and is quite nice inside sadly thats were it stops i had a pint of timothy taylor which is a nice pint but this had a pong to it which sets the alarm bells ringing in the cleaning of the pumps dept i also had a liver pate plowmans and again they got this all wrong serverd up on a block of wood i had 4 very small cut slices of baquette with holes in it which did not leave a lot of bread, the pate had no taste and the salad was mainly coleslaw all for 8.95 when i complained it fell on deaf ears. bye bye you wont see me again.

Wow what a difference, not in a good way, came here last night and the service was just awful. Well overpriced mediocre food and scandalous beer prices explains lack of drinkers. Looks like it has had money spent on it but forgetting the customers is unforgivable. Tried to express my views but noone in charge was available (says it all ) and staff were uninterested. Won't be back in a hurry I'm afraid ..

Having written two complimentary reviews about this pub (20/12/06 and 17/11/08) I'm sorry to say that, despite smart new signage, this has gone way downhill. First the car park, despite the recent dry hot spell, is very muddy. Also, on a Wednesday lunchtime there were no tables to eat at unless you'd booked. 15 is expensive for a meal eaten perched on a bar stool, especially when the stool's covered with crumbs from a previous customer and the bar's soaked with beer. (Made the mistake of putting my newspaper down, and it made it illegible). The friendly staff I'd encountered before have been replaced with unhelpful ones who ignore you for as long as they can. And the ultimate irony is, the party who'd 'booked' two-thirds of the pub (for the owners to allow such a large booking suggests greed on their part) still hadn't arrived by the time I left, so I could have had a table after all. I've eaten here 22 times, but I'll try the Shy Horse next time I'm in the area.

Hadn't been in here for a few years, clearly been altered inside and very much laid out for food. Beers were Cornish Coaster (3.45), Doom Bar and Old Thumper with a sign saying that Summer Lightning and Old Hooky were coming soon. Pleasant enough outside on a sunnt Sunday afternoon.
Usefully located near junction 9 of the M25 and Chessington World of Adventures. However over the years, it has become progressively a restaurant with very few seat for drinkers. The beer is expensive but choice is reasonable Sharps Doombar & Cornish Coaster and Courage Directors. Doombar is becoming more common than London Pride in pubs nowadays. Food is very expensive and I didn't try it. It is only worth a visit if you eating and you have deep pockets.

We had a number of reservations about this pub mainly connected was with the food, We found the menu somewhat limited, the cost was inflated and high, the quality poor and finally to add insult to injury we had to wait ages from ordering to receiving our food.Very poor value

10th anniversary of the Alzheimers charity bike ride yesterday. Fantastic day, the band were excellent, weather held out. Even on a really busy day quality and speed of food delivered was as good as always. Couldn't ask for anything better give them a try.

Feel the below is a tad unfair. Have known The Star for years & it has always represented good value for money & been family friendly - which is important for those with youngsters. Also dog friendly! It is true that it is food orientated, along with many pubs these days - but does retain two bar areas with four hand-pumps - so it still IS a pub. The food isn't cordon-bleu, it's true - but if that's your want - go up town! It is adequate, fresh, wholesome & tasty - they really do try & give a good service - so don't be put off by the below - it is what it is - but it's not bad overall & the beer quality is fine

We used the TIMES vouchers to visit the Star for a meal. The pub is very stylish CLEAN and smart.Lovely log fires news papers to read.Clean tidy loos. THEY HAVE DONE A FANTASTIC JOB ON THE REFURBISHMENT.Both inside and out.Very interesting old photos on the wall. Sadly as with most pub these days the smoking area has been placed right outside the main door.So you have to go through the stench of the smokers to get inside the pub. You are greeted by very warm and friendly bar staff, all with a smile and a pleasent dispostion. Sadly it quickly goes down hill from here rapidly when it comes to the food. Pub food is pub food, and we dont expect city 5* quality, but I can say with hand on heart the food put in front of me last Tuesday 24thFeb 2009 was of such a poor standard. The starter of potato skins was okay, but our main course was Chicken breast in a mushroom red wine sauce. A SMALL !!!! Chicken breast only takes a minute or two to panfry.I have no Idea what was happening in the kitchen but it took over 35 minutes to srrive at the table. The SMALL chicken breast had been cooked to death with not a drop of moisture left in it.The mushroom sauce was just a coupl of fresh mushrooms thrown into a wine concentrated sauce that had not been diluted correctly. The sauce just stuck to the chicken and plate and did not flow as it should do.Because it had not be diluted correctly it was far to strong. The small dish of potato and veg had been steam correctly. The waitress was a sweet polite girl. As with all these situations we did not complain, but the Pub Manager must understand that a pub selling food lives off its reputation.I can assure you that you were the topic of conversation at the school gate, petrol station and local shop the following day! I will return for a beer but noway would I eat at the star again. Please remember how much competion you have around you.I would hate to see the STAR fail, but there is a credit crunch on,and people will choose else where to spend their money.

Spacious pub/restaurant that was perfect for a family Christmas meal. No complaints.
The Star has undergone stylish referbishment and it's absolutely lovely. Cosy open fire, wooden floors, leather arm chairs and sofas, daily papers and real coffee on offer. The staff are nice and friendly. The food is great with plenty of vegetarian options and a varied menu. Dogs are welcome (not in the resturaunt, obvoiusly) but they are offered their own drinking bowl of water. In fact the pub is so improved I'm loathed to tell everyone about it incase I can't get a space.
food was awful.steaks where tough as old boots.prawn cocktails had very little marie rose sauce.staff where ok.will not be going back again and will tell my friends how bad it is.
Very impressed that even when subjected to problems outside their control (electricity supply problems) they created an emergency menu, explained the situation to customers as they arrived, and offered the best service they possibly could. Many other pubs would just have stuck a handwritten "no food until further notice" sign on the main door. Full marks to everyone. And the "emergency" prawn curry and rice was delicious!

Run down old boozer???????? What are you talking about, you should see this place since it's recent refurbishment, completely redecorated, very contemporary, easy arm chairs, sofas, open fires and a great atmosphere. Even the grubby old toilets have been replaced and now look fantastic. As for the Hells Angels, if you pay attention you will see that they are The Harley Owners Club not Hells Angels at all. Caroline is lovely too. Give this place a try, you really wont regret it.
Good choice of food, particularly the extensive childrens menu. The food was delicious, piping hot and there wasn't a long wait. Clean toilets with a baby changing mat (although we no longer need one of those). Great place to refuel after a day at Chessington.
Run-down old boozer, over-priced for what it is... Won't be back. Monthly gathering for bikers and Hells Angels, if you like that sort of thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like it, crowded on a Sunday lunch but still good service.
I visited on a saturday lunch last year and wanted something light but the menu didn't cater and the place seemed a bit run down. But I have visited again last month for a midweek evening meal in a big group and it was really nice, a new great menu with lots of choice in classic/normal meals. Huge portions and the puddings were divine. Actually thinking of going back again soon.
It looks a bit run down from the outside, but it has a 'cosy pub' feel to it on the inside. However, I got the feeling it was a place for 'locals' and not for outsiders.
This place was REALLY quiet at lunchtime on the Saturday we went. We went in after having read good things about the pub, but was a little disappointed by the initial shock of its run-down exterior, and the menu. We left shortly, and didn't even bother having lunch here.
However, I have since driven past this place and it seems to be packed during the weekends.
Maybe I will pluck up the courage to try this another time, and see what I'm missing!

Having read the reviews I've now tried it for myself. Very handy start/end point for a country walk (opposite the Epsom Gap). Large car park and spacious pub, serving 4 real ales and food all day seven days a week. Typical pub meals like pies and lasagnes available as well as snacks. My curry contained perfect tender chicken, it was a huge portion and with the poppadum and chutney it was great value for money. Most impressive was the speedy service, and the friendly helpful staff who are much more pleasant than at comparable pubs. I'll be back.
Decent old-fashioned boozer with it's own slightly dishevelled charm. Food & beer invariably above average.
Ideal for walkers, with easy access to Ashtead Common across the main road, and dogs welcome in the pub.
Popped in yesterday afternoon and yes the food is a tad pricey but the quality is excellent. I had rack of ribs and the meat just fell off the bone. Good selection of drinks too and a pleasant feel to this pub,no problems.
Nice pint of Abbott Ale, but that is just about all I can say about this pub! There was very little atmosphere and the prices of the food on the board seemed excessive - and sadly lacking in anything vegetarian . . . .
The pub is great for food and the people are really friendly and the inside of the pub is nice the best pub within a 10 mile radius 100% beter than the packet food the shy horse. the star pub is the best
Get ever so busy though not clear why as it's all a bit scruffy. Maybe the large number of White Vans outside explains it. Bog standard beer choice. I suppose it's not the Shy Horse which can only be a plus.
They concentrate on the foody lunchtime market, and they do it very well. I've never been let down here, one to take an elderly relative to.
Ive been going here for the last 5 years and the food has been excellent everytime I go. excellent atmosphere 10/10 try the gammon !

Now revamped but spoiled by badly behaved children running around - on certain Thursday evenings the pub is taken over by noisy bikers!

I like this pub a lot. The burgers are probably the best I have ever tasted. The log fires are great too.

The food is expensive and the atmosphere rather noisy and roudy. This used to be such a lovely pub
Dan Walker - 10 Jul 2002 22:49 |
This pub is rapidly going downhill due to the biking element and mayhem caused by their behaviour.
