Visited in February. Without doubt one of the great pubs of England. First class landlord and friendly locals. If you like bland theme pubs or big brewery pubs, dont visit. If you like a unique pub that is a beacon of what pubs once were and should be.....then visit. If landlord goes it will never be the same so don't miss it !

Recommended by the bar lady at the excellent 'The `George' in Blackawton.
It's everything a good pub should be ! Welcoming. slightly shambolic furnishings, well kept beer - the Otter Bitter, and the Eddystone were both in fine form - and the best Stilton Ploughman's I've had in eons !
I'd happily have a lock-in here !

Visited this pub for lunch for the first time last week. My first impression was that it looked a bit worn and untidy, so I was a bit concerned about what was to come. But there was no reason to worry; we ordered Fish Pie, and it was delicious food. I guess at least 85 percent fish with boiled potato slices on top, served with green peas. And they had 2 real ales on tap, from South Hams Brewery. We started with Devon Pride, and had Eddystone for dessert, both ales in top conditions. The Eddystone was tapped from a wooden barrel. A village pub absolutely to recommend.

Absolutely brilliant. Had a couple of pints and a ploughmans on a sunny day after walking the coast path from Salcombe. Would happily go back again when in the area.

Visited this little gem after a gap of 4 years. Thankfully nothing changed un-like alot of other pubs. No pretentions, just a proper pub with real people behind the bar and the clientelle. Defo worth a visit and the tripm to get there!

Wow what a lovely friendly pub, we visited this pub on a tues lunchtime after a reccomendation from friends, we were greeted by a lovely smiling barmaid who made us feel very welcome, we ordered drink and food and both were superb. The decor is unusuall to say the least but the pub is well worth a visit just for the lovely barmaid.

Great pub and offers far more than one might expect from a village pub. Interesting decor and layout and very pleasant staff and patronage. Good selection of ales (3 as I recall). Lots of free games available to play and we roped in some locals and tourists into a game of spoof. It was a delightfully bleary eyed walk home for us.
A very fun and lively place to be.
The reviews by katejosh and CustomerServiceintheUK's are absurd. In a sea of extremely high praise you two seem to be offering polar opposite reviews. I note that both of you have only posted one pub review, this one. These reviews should be ignored, they are clearly not genuine.

Top pub, best in the South Hams but a real swine to get to. Top beers straight fom the barrel and ciders to die for. They also had one of the best Perrys i have had in a long while. Good food , super quirky decorations inside and loads of out door seating. Dogs welcome and a kids area , They even do free snuff on the bar. Shame its 140 miles from my home.

Best pub I have ever been to! Great Atmosphere. Allow Dogs but adults must be on best behaviour! Hardworking Landlord!
Be visiting again soon!

dirty pub could do with a good clean landlord and landlady always drunk and rude locals wont use the pub we had fish and chips fish was raw in the middle soggy batter chips was ok very bad atmosphere

A truly welcoming pub, visited well out of season on a half term break with my son. Not a real ale drinker, but Guiness was very well kept! Food was ok, good basic pub fare. One small criticism, a little bit too doggy for my liking, am a bit old school and prefer dogs to be on leads in pubs, and not able to take a pee up the side of the bar! But a very quirky place with an interior that seems to have grown rather than been manufactured!

Visited this pub on a cold and wet Tuesday night this week. All I can say is one of the best pubs I have ever been in.South Hams beers straight from the barrel. All in superb condition and perfect temperature.Landlord very friendly and welcoming. The pub interior is one of the most characterful I have ever been in,an old smugglers inn.Adults, children and dogs(there is a dog menu!) will love it..I won't say more but go see yourself.I have been visiting pubs for just over 36 years. Put simply, this is one of the best I have ever been to. Go visit as if this ever goes you are unlikely to find similar or better.

Great pub, used to sell the best London Pride but sadly no more, still worth a trip.

A group of about 10 of us visited this pub on a Sunday. After half of our group placed an order the other half was told that the kitchen was closed. We were told that the 'Italian' chef was very moody and wouldn't accept any more orders. However after some negotiation they agreed to take the rest of the order. When the order was ready we were accidentally given someone else's meal. The 'Italian' chef then came out and YELLED at us for taking this food. He said he 'has a busy night ahead'. SO WHAT - you are a chef! When we got our food it was terrible. Easily the worst customer service I have ever had in the UK. My suggestion - lose the petulant totally incompetent poor excuse for a short order cook you currently have.

Great place. Really friendly landlord who gave my kids some pens to write on the walls in the snug. South Hams Eddystone was fantastic, as were the other two local brews I tried but can't remember the names of. Full of interesting bits and bobs. Including a shower room with four showers. Hopefully I'll get to visit it again.

This is a brilliant pub that seems to have a rich mix of clientele, from locals to walkers exploring this beautiful part of Devon. Though it has great ales, the Heritage cider is excellent too. Food a little disappointing and it took a while to show up, but we made up for it with pork scratchings. Our visit was made for us by Parsnip, one of the pub's dogs, deciding to go a five mile walk with us, despite our best efforts to send her home. Take a walk along the coastal path to Lannacombe beach (with or without Parsnip), then finish it off with a few restorative ales at the Pig's Nose. You won't be disappointed.

Just managed to find this little gem on the site. what can I say....Extra ordinary location, pub and staff, jumble sale meets restaurant. Devonian hospitality mixed with Gloucestershire and London. Mention the Pigs Nose Inn within the beer community and those with standards always know of this 'pub'. The 'local' bands in the village hall next door ( part of the pub) also add a metropolitan edge to an excellent venue.

One of the most magical pubs I've ever been to. Eccentric is the right word. Brilliant live music, drinking until early hours, dressing-up box (funny hats all round), very child-friendly. We got there late and there was no cash machine in the village - but the barmaid happily suggested we keep drinking and settle up later as we were there all weekend, weren't we?!

great pub, nice food, great ales....p*ss poor service. especially in summer when busy and not enough bar staff employed. otherwise bl**dy good place to enjoy all the beers on offer... do it!

East Prawle is a place which feels pretty much like the end of the world, especially in a howling gale in late December. Entering the pub is therefore a delightful surprise. Everything about the place is eccentric including, it seems, the staff! I don't think there was a single square foot of surface to be found in the whole place that does not have a trinket, picture, cutting, antiquity, book, plant or other bit of clutter upon it (I'd hate to have to do the dusting). The drinks were excellent - mostly local with the addition of London Pride. Food was good too. I'll have to go back one evening when there's a gig on; the pub famously has a large hall attached which, as well as local musicians, occasionally plays host to improbably big names...

The world would be a lesser place were it not for good ham
anonymous - 21 May 2007 02:30 |
Arrived with a friend, who had had a poor experience with service before; so we asked for estimated time for serving 2 ploughmans lunches (20-30 minutes). It actually took 45-50 minutes, and that only after complaining. Excuses were given about cooking to order (ploughmans'?), handling orders in the sequence placed (the preceding one had been delivered fully 30 minutes before ours), and being busy (at least 1/3 of tables were unoccupied). The smoked mackerel (6.25), when it finally arrived, was about the size of a large anchovy. In fairness the ham was good. Drinks service at the bar was similarly lacklustre. A great pity, since this is a characterful pub, not unfriendly, comfortable, and with good beer. Why is it that certain landlords are happy to keep their customers waiting in this way? Do they not want to sell the food and drink? Will not be calling again.

A Blast From The Past Looking up the net for something and rediscovered Salcombe. In 1960 spent 3 glorious weeks 'there' (??? quite where) camping with friends from college in London. Spent many happy evenings at the Pig's Nose, playing darts with the locals and drinking scrumpy. Guess many things have changed but gave it 10 out of 10 at the time!!

Rather too children friendly in season

Brilliant pub! Great open fire in winter, idiosyncratic decor and furnishings, characterful landlord and friendly barstaff. Regular live music. Close to coast path.
