user reviews of Oscars Wine Bar, York

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Recently returned to Oscar's after a year or two and sadly I can no longer say one good thing about it! I may as well just list the bad points:

- Ignored when we came in (waitress clocked us and ignored us);
- Had to wait 20mins to be seated, other people were prioritised over us;
- Food selection is very poor (if you don't want a burger);
- Staff are NOT friendly;
- Food quality is poor;
- Music is DEAFENING! (we were shouting);
- When we asked for the music to be turned down we were ignored (but told they would do it - yeah, right);
- Food is expensive;
- When we complained our comments were ignored (we had to shout them to be heard!) and met with abuse;
- Both myself and my partner suffered from food poisoning shortly afterwards;

I would never return here. There are so many lovely restaurants in York, don't waste your time with this one!

Since my last post, this place has moved (somewhat controversially!) across the road into the same building as the Biltmore. Nice enough, but not as big and rambling.

I've always liked Oscars - except that the music gets steadily louder as the night progresses, to the point where conversation is impossible. Surely this is precisely he kind of cosy, intimate place where you would WANT to have a conversation?

very cute little pub with great outside terrace and friendly bar staff. When I need a good feed I'm there! the burgers are BRILLIANT and very generous portions, currently planning my next visit...

A York institution since I was a lad in the early 80's. Better known for it's food (huge portions as most have already said) and it's fairly cheap too, especially with their discount vouchers which are often printed in the local papers. Has thankfully rid itself of the "wine bar" image after dropping it from its name way after the 80's abyss had passed.

I LOVE this place! The atmosphere is great for sitting round with your mates before the clubs. Best place to sit is outside in the 'Greek Garden', there's always outdoor heaters to take off the chill, although they alweays have them cranked up pretty high so don't go there if you're wearing hairspray, wax or makeup, they tend to melt and drip down your chin...
Try the nachos, the monstrous burgers and the 'size-of-your-dad' chips. One of the only places to serve Bud on draught too.
Beware the 'stairs of death' though, tipsy + big feet = certain death; these stairs were built by the borrowers and have been fitted with brass blades to ensure maximum fatalities.

Nothing special on the drinks front - Fosters/Stella/yadada, but definitely a place to eat *if* you can find somewhere to sit - the central location means it gets stupidly packed at weekends, and don't even think about going there on race days.

I can heartily recommend their 'Muchos Nachos' and for those who think they can put their food away, you've got to have the 'Mountain Burger' (I had trouble and I'm no lightweight ;-) )

Still packed. Still does great food. Still does great Pimms. Still full of pretty girls.

Is Oscars still trendy? Bejesus, I sudenly feel rather old. Me and my mate Paul used to go there an awful lot in the mid 80s, and put the world to rights over several pitchers of something that tasted to much like Blue Nun.

Very good place to eat and drink in the centre of York. Go into the place via a passageway, into a walled courtyard with heaters, and cover for the worst of the weather, and plenty on seats. Inside, tables on two floors, for eating and drinking. Good choice of beer, wine, + spirits, and great food. Can be hard to find a seat because it is so popular, but you can't blame them for that. Great indeed.

Legend of a place. Outstanding food, great jugs of Pimms and nice eye-candy. Can get a bit pretentious but let it ride over you and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere.

converted by a Mr A McLean in 1983/84 into a wine bar. This establishment is one of the best upmarket bars in the area. Wonderful choice of continental food along with an excellent choice of beers and wine. A visit comes highly recommended.

One of my favs in York. Trendy but down to earth too. Food is lovely, well priced as portions are huge. Drink prices are average. Has a nice little yard / city garden with heated lamps. Somewhere to relax and have fun with your mates.

Spent a NYE here once, great little place. Accidentally walked into the loo while a guy was getting a blowjob from his missus.

Tucked away in the heart of York, right near the Minster - a great place to while away the evening.

Great food and great prices and the beer is not bad either, at least worth a visit
