Another of the current Bridgnorth pubs in the Good Beer Guide. But, this one was disappointing. Two girls were working behind the bar. But, one wasn't doing much and we had to wait a while before being served. The bar area is small, especially with people crowded around the TV for the Cup Final. There is also a dining area, which was unused on our visit. At the rear, is a conservatory with a pool table. Beyond that is a garden with tables overlooking a nice view. Ales do not change. They are Wye Valley HPA & Butty Bach, Hobson's Town Crier and Sharp's Doom Bar.

Regular GBG Entry.... two C17th cottages knocked together. Traditional low beamed ceiling pub feel.

Famous for its Sunday lunch as well as its beer - an excellent Wye Valley Butty Bach was chosen out the four available.

Recommended.

Enjoyed a lovely pint of Hobsons while sitting in the picturesque beer garden overlooking the lower town.

There was a good selection of three beers when we attended a few weeks ago. They were all tasty and well-kept, though alas the landlord insisted on having a sparkler on the taps and some lovely local beers were infused with oxygen to give them a faux creamy head. Perhaps that's what the locals want? Not sure. Anyway, a nice pub, the landlord and staff couldn't have been more friendly or welcoming. The food was plentiful and excellent and the somehow the landlord got about 14 meals all served at the same time, no mean feat on a busy Saturday lunchtime. Well recommended - ditch the sparkler though please!!

Back at The Old Castle for lunch 1 year on, there are lots of pub/restaurants in Bridgnorth but we went with what we knew and we were rewarded with the same friendly welcome,
great food and generous portions. Once again we left food on our plates and felt guilty.
If i lived in Bridgnorth this would be my local.

My girlfriend and i visited The Old Castle on a fairly busy Thursday afternoon, From the minute we got in there until we left the Landlord was friendly, attentive and helpful.
The pub is cosy and has a large spacious beer garden, but the real surprise was the food. We decided on the combo for two, i thought this might not be enough as we were fairly hungry, but didn't want a substantial meal, so i ordered the homemade soup of the day as well.
The soup (broccoli and pea) was served in a large bowl with a fresh warm baguette and was a meal in itself due to the portion size. I have previously worked as a conference and banqueting manager and this soup was as good as i have tasted. The Combo was a refreshing change from the usual pub fayre served, especially in the tired "chain" pubs. The Items in the combo were all fresh, tasty and perfectly cooked with plenty of homemade garlic bread, again, a very generous portion.
Whoever is in the kitchen obviously knows their stuff and takes pride in the quality and presentation of their food.
We will definately eat and drink here again when we visit Bridgnorth and will recommend The Old Castle with confidence, great value for money.

Having moved to Bridgnorth and the street where this pub is situated I was looking forward to living so close to a pub. I liked this pub at first, the food, beer and owners seemed okay but then the music started. When the windows and doors are open it is so unbearable. They have absolutely no consideration for the residents on that street with very loud live bands playing until gone midnight. It will take a lot to get me back in that pub!

I have just visited this rightfully busy pub with friends. The food was straightforward, filling, tasty and reasonably priced. I tried a beer I'd never heard of and enjoyed it. But what stood out was the attitude of the staff. The servers, both behind the bar and at the tables were as cheerful and attentive as you could want. While I was much delayed parking my wife was getting frantic trying to phone me but her mobile was dead. The landlord noticed and without being asked for help kindly put her phone on charge behind the bar and lent her his to make the call. Then when we were getting ready to leave he brought her phone back to her. I forgot my raincoat and he noticed and chased me out with it. Such a kind and helpful attitude from a busy person is rare indeed.

Have just read Raymond's comments. Is he talking about a different pub? Have eaten here so many times with and without our family. The food is consistently excellent, all home made, huge portions, great value! Our grandchildren have always been made so welcome. Bryn and Kerry work so hard and do not deserve comments like Raymond's. Would say to anyone - go and try for yourself. You will soon realise that he is talking utter rubbish!

In reply to Raymonds comment can we tell our side of the story. This is NOT how it happened at all!!! Her child took the wrong meal (they were not similar) and started shouting at me for getting it wrong although the correct one was on its way. The lady cooking the food is actualy the landlady and very calm, organised and professional. The landlord had no interaction with them at all so how they can say he is miserable is beyond me. The whole family was rude obusive and not one you would want in your pub. When we tried to explain that we hadn't made a mistake but there child had taken the wrong one I was told to "go away waitress and let us eat our food" As a foot note their plates were licked clean. I just wish we could rate customers because boy were they having a bad day and scored 0/10

Perhaps we turned up when they were having a bad day but I have to say I thoroughly regret taking my family (9 of us) to this pub for lunch recently. The guy working the bar (pretty sure he was the landlord) was miserable from the start but the lady who cooked the food took the biscuit. When it came to handing out the food she didn't seem to be able to cope and became impatient and very rude when a couple of my kids (who ordered similar dishes) took a moment to figure out who's was who's. She started telling them off! Heaven knows why they describe their pub as 'Family Friendly' Oh... and the food was pretty awful too. Give this one a miss - loads of other pubs in the town where I'm sure you will actually feel welcome.

Carlurmston gives a description of the rooms, but this place also has a nice rear beer patio. Service was good and what i saw of the inside was clean.

Beerwise, usual stuff plau Banks's MILD smooth, but on handpull there was GK IPA, Spitfire and Hobson's Bitter, which saved the day to be fair.

Another solid pub for me, but with so many, it would, with its lack of beer choice, be one i may do every other trip, unless a hot day, then patio - here i come!

Yet another great Bridgnorth boozer. Fewer real ales than many pubs in Bridgnorth but still a good pub, and my Everards was in good nick. the front bar has cosy furnishings and a television, whilst a rear room- which is actually a conservatory but doesn't feel as such- has a pool table. A side room has a restaurant in it. Friendly service, good beer, nice pub-worth a visit.

Visited this pub again recently and found it much improved under the new owners. Lively with a good atmosphere and decent ale although quite limited selection being a tied pub. Worth a visit as better than most pubs in Bridgnorth.
