Popped in for a swift pint on the way home as I saw there's a new owner. He seems like a top bloke and I've got high hopes for the pub. There was only one ale and it was superb (Loddon Hoppit). The chap knows his stuff, so he serves from a polypin from a local brewery during the week. On the weekend he'll open a cask. This is a great idea as it keeps the beer local and fresh while he builds up the business. Pop in for a pint and a chat to support the new owner and allow him to transform the tired pub into somewhere worth visiting.

A really sad little pub, probably used to be quite nice. Local cliental, pub garden, live music in a pokey back room (I'd be insulted if I was a band playing here) but that's it! Certainly has the vibe of a pub on its last legs, no crisps or nuts, no bottled water, one ale, broken seats, chunks out of Walls and broken light fittings - such a shame.

Nicely furnished pub, beer garden is lovely with the flowerpots being obviously very well looked after. Enjoyed a nice game of pool. Brakspear Bitter was the only ale on and was in good condition. Decent clientle.

Caledonian 80/-, Black Sheep Bitter and Ringwood Best. Beer quality wasn't up to much. OK pub and the pints were changed without a quibble.

Modern style interior in an old building just south of the town centre. The main bar is finished in cream with a red carpet and red upholstered pew style benches with some short stools clustering round the few tables. Largely seating at one end by a nasty brick fireplace, with a middle area housing a big screen separated by a balustrade sitting on a low partion wall. Beyond that is a pool table, darts board and another screen. Plenty of drinking space around the bar for those who prefer to stand or block the bar. Four handpulls sitting at the end of the bar with Brakspears Bitter and Caledonian Golden Promise being served, the Brakspears was in fine condition when I tried it. The only other punters were some east European lads playing pool and a middle aged business type.

Looks like a couple of extra handpumps have been added - 4 ales now. Perhaps not the most imaginative selection you'll see but I guess they're choosing from a fairly restricted list. Quality is usually fairly good. A fair bet for a decent beer and the footy.

Popped into this pub the other week and really enjoyed my visit. Had a few games of pool and the larger was good so will visit again in the future!

New management have certainly done a good job on the place - a nice new paint job outside and a spruce-up generally inside.
Now sells two rotating guest ales from the pubcos list. Quality has been relatively good so far and the choices interesting. Sports shown the TV, so might be good for a few ales with the football.
Worth trying out again.

Second visit. Had Sunday lunch with family. Roast beef with with roast potatoes, youkshires, choice of veg., followed by coice of puds and free glass of rose wine (special for mothers day), The food was excellent, very good value for money at 5.95 per head. Very friendly people. Well worth a visit.

Red Lion has now been open for just over one week, the refurbishment is great and gives it a welcoming atmosphere. The beer is good and I enjoyed the Courage Best and Directors. Although the menu is limited at the moment my omlette and chips was very good value. IThe pub is well worth a visit.

No not the landlord but nice to see your on the ball worth a visit though!
|
Given that the sign outside says it isn't open again until Saturday 16th, I take it you are the landlord...?

There is a better pub up the road called the Pheasant, Everyone ahould try it!
|
Nice little place, I found the owner very friendly. There are better places in Reading, but definitely worth a visit when on a crawl.
|
Unscheduled stop-off after the Hop Leaf, serving competitively priced Hooky Best in a clean but unremarkable tavern run by Bill Bailey's brother.
|
Like it when they have the beer taps working - more often than not they are broken though!
Bartenders have been known to be a little rude, but still a welcoming place and a not too expensive beer.

The Red Lion is 5min walk from the Oracle, full of all sorts of people. During the winter we have Pool on a Wed, Darts on a Tue and funfilled nightes there after. The main barmaid is full of life and can argue her way out of a barrel of 'real ale'. The craic is mighty. Food is available upon request. Football is the high light and heated debates are always here and there. "The Barmaid is ALWAYS right". Come and visit...... x
