user reviews of the Trout and Tipple, Tavistock

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I wasn't convinced that this pub would be open during the late afternoon. It advertises as being closed. But we dropped by and found it open. There were only 2 other customers. The owners seemed friendly enough though. The pub has a bar area and a similar sized restaurant area. The car park and trout farm are opposite. Take care if crossing the road, as cars come around the bend quite rapidly. Ales were Dartmoor Jail Ale, Otter Bright & St Austell Tribute. But there was no real cider. Moved on from here to the Whitchurch Inn, which was on the opposite side of Tavistock and is not listed on here.

I regularly visited this pub when the previous owners had it. Called in recently and it seemed a bit run down. The main toilets were closed. The others were in a cold room which smelled damp and the choice of beer was less than it used to be. I didn't eat as the chef didn't start until 1pm

Great pub, good ale and nice food with large portions, The staff are friendly. If your looking for a nice country pub feel with wood burning stove and a cosy feel this is it. a nice find.

Jail Ale very good the other night, as was the Teignworthy Spring Tide. Shame the pub wasn't busier but then it was a Winter Sunday night.

My wife and two children visited tonight and found a very warm welcome, good beer and good food. There was a choice of 4 real ales (2 local Princetown Jail Ale and St Austell Legend, and two Bristol guest ales GW Beesknees and Wickwar BOB), all kept well and reasonably priced. The children were very welcome (and in fact two other families turned up while we were there so it is very child friendly). There is a good, reasonably priced menu board, with separate menu for the kids. There is a snug main bar with lots of inglenooks and beams, a larger dining area and a games room upstairs with pool and darts. The new owners are very friendly and accommodating. They even serve takeaway beer for a small deposit of a flaggon. Well worth the short walk or drive out of town for.

I can concur completely with the last poster, now have visited a few times...can also add that the food is indeed very good, & the chef seems quite enthusiastic and friendly . With regards to the opening times, it is closed on Mondays, but operates fully on all other days. I'm not a fish fan, but I would imagine that the trout on the menu must be the 'piece de la resistance', since their is a troutery across the road. Personally my favourite meal so far is the Indian curry, as was as spicy & tasted as good as a normal curry house one.

just passing by pub on friday evening so popped in.a quaint old fashioned bar with wood burning stoves.seemed to be very popular bar was full and had a local band playing in other room.5 real ales to choose from which was very pleasing.couldnt say about the food as i never eat but looking at chalk board menu there looked to be a nice range of good honest pub food with reasonable prices.bar staff seemed very willing and a pleasant evening was enjoyed.next time i am passing i will be back for more splendid real ale in a bar full of charm.

My first visit to this CAMRA awarded pub since its change of ownership, what a disappointment.
From the outside the pub looked closed, on the inside it was open but cold and lacking in customers. Having made the effort we decided to stay wrapped up and try both the food and beer. The menu has changed and although basic and limited was good and inexpensive, but the beers on offer was limited to 2 and both the same local brewery (previous visit 4 real ales) and a good choice. A lack of choice, atmosphere and staff at times would sum up the experience.
From previous visits and comments I know the previous owners were not everyone's choice, but they knew their real ales and customers were there to sample them.
We noticed some advertised themed food nights i.e. curry etc, perhaps a look at the beer options is needed.

My wife told me about the change of ownership today & wanted to give it a go...not 100% related to my comments below, ie. to see if had improved...but coz mainly we were curious about any changes. I said fine, if got good vibes from their website. But the site just says literally 'Lisa & paul are the new owners, please ring this number for the new opening times'. Now some people aren't necessarily internet-savvy, and fair enough...but it doesn't exactly have me vaulting off my sofa to walk the mile, each-way, to it. Maybe if it had said 'please ring to hear about our exiting new menu, or facelift etc.' would be good...but is a bit odd you're supposed to call about opening hours, you'd think it'd be easier to post it on the site, rather than post a message to call about it.

The Pub was closed for a change of owner when I visited two weeks ago and was due to re-open last week. Has anyone visited since then? It is one I visit regularly when I am in Devon and hope the new owners continue to run it the same way

Any tourists to Tavistock please don't believe Shanemel's opinion that the 'Peter Tavy inn is awful, but that the Trout & Tipple was excellent & friendly'. This is without doubt a completely ludicrous review & honestly does not even merit argument.

The food at the Trout is mediocre, as per most of the other reviews here, and I've eaten here twice this year. In terms of friendliness....I was at a charity quiz last night there, and now regret the 20 I donated, plus the 30 I spent in the bar...as at 11.05pm, in front of 9 other astonished people in our group, right in the middle of the raffle - I was accosted & demanded I drink up or handover my glass immediately, in a very unfriendly, unsmiling manner. I could possibly understand this if the pub had stopped serving at 10.30 & they were waiting to close, but not in the middle of the charity raffle with the pub still full...and as we left 10 minutes later, many of the organisers were still drinking quite happily...so obviously providing one's time to an event, rather than one's money - is the key here to being treated like a human being.

Would love to have stopped for longer to test the good range of beers. The bar area cries out as an old-fashioned cosy pub well-suited to real ale drinkers.

Good beer . Basic food was a bit disappointing . Bar area is very nice but when busy you have to eat in cold no atmosphere dinning area.

I,ve been in a few times over the years, it shouts real Ale boozer with its multitude of beer mats9 similar to the Claret freehouse addiscombe ) but the beers are anything off of the cheap list and drinkable without being super ,smashing, great.the food is lacklustre. If i lived in tavvy i suppose it is the pick of a poor bunch.

Find it hard to believe freezerrm's comments about his experience. Did he not think to ask where foood orders are taken?. Have visited the 'trout' several times whilst visiting close friends in the area and have never experienced this, nor have other people judging from the reviews. The food has always been good to exellent so please don't let people be put off by this. The pub remains a true gem.

Wouldn't recommend eating here.
The food was indifferent and expensive. We were directed to our table, were not given a menu and were not advised that food should be ordered at the bar. If we hadn't asked we could still be there , waiting to be served.... In an area that has several good food pubs this one stands out as one to avoid, as there are plenty of others with equally acceptable real ales, better service and better nosh!

Camra pub, good ales but a draught cider we had was vinegar, Landlady said it was as normal, but did replace.Dog friendly-loved the sausage.Closes 2.30 pm weekdays on the DOT.
jeffdaff - 20 Feb 2008 11:14
A good range of local beers served by a ladylady who knows all about them. Both times I have been here new beers were added during the evening. Prices are a bit high for the area but well worth a visit

Visited 27/10/06, Friday Lunchtime. About 15 min walk out of Tavistock this pub is worth seeking out. We had travelled by bus (hence the walk) for a 'Beer and Banger Beer' Festival. The landlord had put on a good selection of ales; unfortunately they were not all available. At any one time there must have been 7 or 8 beers on the hand pumps. It's a shame he couldn't have them all available, perhaps serving straight from the cask. A great atmosphere, with friendly locals and bar staff. The 'bangers' were tasty and went down a treat. My favourite beer of all that were available was the Jail Ale-a regular ale at the pub. I look forward to visiting again at future date. Hopefully when there's a festival on.

After staying in our campervan in Peter Tavy in June we arrived at the Trout and Tipple on our second night after a disasterous evening in the highly rated but awful Peter Tavy inn.We cannot speak highly enough of the pub the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food was excellent and we look forward to our next opportunity to dine there
shanemel - 9 Sep 2006 19:16
Always very well kept Real Ales, normally 4 on at any one time and a decent cider. Holds one or two mini Real Ale Festival every year which are worth a visit. Check out the Latin graffiti in the Gents toilet.
