The Cricketers now has different owners. It was probably the time of day I visited (early afternoon). But, the atmosphere felt a bit lifeless. The choice of real ale here is now restricted to Sharp's Doom Bar & Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter. A CAMRA discount is offered. But apparently this will be stopped at the end of the month, as local CAMRA members are not supporting the pub. I can't say I'm surprised, given the poor choice. FA Cup football was being shown on a couple of TVs and I had a large choice of seating. Another disappointment.
Ray's regular house beer is Redemption Brewery's award-winning Trinity which although being only 3% ABV is a gorgeous drink, and rare to find south of the river. Other regular beers featured inlcude Harveys and there are guest beers usually.
The Cricketers has been redecorated recently but retains its comfortable lived-in feeling. Tuesday nights feature decent jazz and the talented vocalist is worth the trip to Shirley Road. Simple hearty pub grub available.
Great pub in which to watch Palace matches! Ray must be CPFC's greatest fan.
Cheers AR

Fine around pub. Good to see that old slerpy has stopped his 50+ post campaign. He, thankfully, remains busy down Dulwich way where his zimmer-frame was impounded again.
Solid and decent local pub serving decent beer. Regulars crowd around the bar but no hostility in here, friendly enough.
Bonus points for seafood stall outside at the weekend.
Trepidation and twitter. Yes, slerpy has lost the plot.
You always know when the slerp is in residence there`s a zimmer parked outside.

The vested interest is Enterprise Inns who may wish to take up your ill informed allegation as to the proper ownership/financial interest in the pub.I would await the postman with nervous trepidation ( that is if you have the ability to follow recent interesting court cases involving twitter).By the way i've drawn their attention to it and made my own objection.
Over 50 posts here now from slerpy - all positive about this pub. Well known local OAP with a major vested interest.
Today the Cricketers had a beer from Three Castles Brewery, Harvey's B.B. and two from Fyne ales Brewery namely Jarl and Avalanche, the last two were exceptional.
I was very surprised to find Beach Blonde from Sunny Republic Brewery on in here last week, an amazingly good golden ale, tastes of grapefuit and lychees.Sunny Republic Brewery recently started in Dorset as is available in about twenty pubs.
Three ales on gravity dispense, two from Twickenham and a seasonal Rosey Nosey from Batemans. The aforementioned ales are kept using cooling jackets.
This community pub has just impoved, they have added Sky tv. It is a fairly safe bet that all televised CrystalPalace matches will be shown, trust me it would be a little foolhardy to ask for the Manchester United match if Palace are on the other side.
Great community pub, deservedly Croydon Camra pub of the year, even if they probably sell more lager. Solid, reliable, no airs and graces just honest, decent hard working Guvnors with great beer and reasonable food.
Mines definetly a small one- Never ,I'm always inside pubs- D'oh!
Do you suppose that that might be slerpy in the photo above - stood in the wi-fi hotspot of a doorway ?
Over 40 posts (on this pub) in three years now from slerpy - with a very positive bias: 10 ratings. The same for the Half and Half and others where he has a 'free pint' arrangement! Ignore this bloke who has been brought to BITE's attention.
This is for information and is clearly not a review( trolls and knuckle dragging neanderthals please note); The Cricketers are holding a minibeer festival starting on Thursday the 10th November, they usually last four days,if the quality of the Jarl ( Highland) and Jorvick ( York) blonde ales are anything to go by then a real treat is instore. Currently the only pub to score 10/10.In the Borough.
As inauspicious as it looks from the outside, this is in fact a very, very good pub. Good service and very good beer. Quality.
Palace Ale is currently on, a Hophead type golden ale but with a sharp lager style bite, the comments so far have been very positive indeed.
Ray has ordered some very special alesfor next week, i'm sworn to secrecy but a visit would be very well rewarded, only a few ales are better than the Jarl which is on at present.
The Cricketers have been stocking Jarl from Fyne brewery recently, it is a cleaner tasting Hophead type ale, personally I( just) prefer the Golden Sands from Souithport and the Jarl to Hophead.
I fail to understand the fascination with decrying the wonderful pubs that we have in Croydon, with the quality and range that are available where is there that is better? I am agog with anticipation as to the name of this real ale utopia ( sorry, Dale Sharp) ! You fail to mention wether you have actually graced the Cricketers with your presence and personally witnessed the labourious way in which the ale is poured.
I have never set out to particularly review the Cricketers, I pass on news concerning beer festivals and special ales that people might wish to try.The CAMRA local pub of the year says it all really. As for pouring slowly, this is a joke, for whatever reason the real ale is poured extremely slowly indeed which was the cause of the guvnor seeking out lined glasses( due to the inordinate froth). Beersnotjustforboys manages to combine stupidity, rudeness and misinformation, overall a poor effort and worse than the attempted review of the Builders Arms, this sort of stuff is usual during the school holidays.
Are there any recent reviews NOT by 'slerpy' for this pub?
The landlord and staff are friendly, although none of them seem to know how to pull a decent pint (slowly please, it's not lager!). The last few Shere Drops I've had have all been on the dubious side of drinkable, I hope through poor storage rather than anything else. An OK place for a couple of pints but nothing else. Could do with a coat of paint and a steam clean!
The Cicketers will have the three Surrey Hills Brewery ales on permanently. the Hammer mild has justifiably won a gold award.the Shere Drop is pleasant enough but the Ranmore ale is decidedly average.a bold move and giving the area exposure to a Brewery whose ales are difficult to find.
The Cricketers have a "Meet the Brewer " evening on the 15th March at 20;00 hrs.The invited brewer is Ross from Surrey Hills. As well as the cumbrian ales they also have on ; o'hanlons port stout, two Surrey Hills,JHB from Oakham and two ales from Dark star hophead and Six Hop Ale at 6.5% the last certainly not being the least in any way!
Cumbrian Beer festival starts on Thursday for four days. The Cricketers have Hophead on regularly and it is served on a swan neck dispense in a lined glass, the beer comes out very frothy but benefits from this method of serving,at 2.00 to takeaway this is the best value to be found hereabouts.Understandably Croydon CAMRA Pub of the year 2010.
Merrie , a 5.9% abv ale from Thornbridge will be on over Xmas-Sweet, tangy and hoppy aroma. Plenty of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and winter berries. Great looking beer with an inviting caramel colour and a head that just doesnt give up. Flavour is full-on malt and a bitterness that lasts with its nutmeg and cinnamon spice. If you miss it here the nearby cClaret has some in the cellar as well !
A new collaboration ale from Thornbridge/Dark Star lurks in the cellar, it may appear on the bar this weekend.
the Cricketers has a beer festival on this weekend, fifteen well chosen ales with five from ; Wales,Scotland and England, every beer style is represented. The ales are reduced to 2.60 a pint, a beer menu is provided and the festival food menu appears on the reverse.Beers are available at ALL times at 2.00 for those wishing to take away.
Decent range on tap, decent and friendly service, and parking priveledges Enjoyable visit, packed atmosphere when I went in Would return. Old ramshackle charm to it
A fine hostelry that deserves to be cherished. Marvellous line up of ales on tap, friendly service and a decent atmosphere.
Went in for the first time on saturday and was definitely impressed.
A choice of three ales today,Harveys, Hophead and Twickenham Naked ladies.
Several great ales on today such as Betty Stoggs Skinners, American Pale Ale Dark Star,Rudgate Ruby Mild,Harvey's Best Bitter,An Elland golden ale Savvanah and Hophead ( still dark and bitter). The pub sells containers for takeaway and charge two pounds a pint!
A nice write up in the Croydon Advertiser this week which focuses on Ray's lager addiction and the wonderful community spirit that the Cricketers enjoys.
Just to try and break the ubiquitous "slerpy"'s posting monopoly on this page. :-)
The Cricketers continues to serve a wide range of real ales in oversized lined glasses, in a comfortable, old-fashioned open-plan bar with distinct drinking areas and no less than three log fires, one of which was warming the rather chill air of last Friday when I visited. My pint of Dark Star Hophead ( a standard beer at this pub along with Harveys) was exceptional as was the following pint of Blue Monkey BG Tips.
I had a chat with Ray the guv'nor, who showed me the huge garden at the rear of the carpark, and he said he had plans for turning it into a sort of nature reserve for wild birds. Whatever, the blubells were just blooming and the place was perfect for supping a pint in the sunshine. Scant tho' it was!
The local branch of CAMRA are awarding him the Pub of the Year on Thursday 13th May and the following will (hopefully) be served: Pictish Black Diamond, Southport Golden Sands, Rudgate Ruby Mild, Dark Star APA, Black Hole Red Dwarf, O'Hanlons Port Stout and Harveys Sussex. Hope there's also some Hophead for me, Ray!
Cheers, AR (
On the evening of the13th May The Cricketers will receive the2010 Pub of the Year award from CAMRA. The intended ales for the evening are Golden Sands Southport Brewery. O'Hanlons porter stout, APA Dark Star,Red Dwarf Black Hole and two more.
The Cricketers have been declared Pub of the Year for Croydon by the local CAMRA branch( nearly typed umpires!). Late in May Ray will receive his second award of the year, having only just become Pub of the Season for Winter 2010.Too few drinkers make the pilgrimage to this real ale oasis.Usually five or six ales and a cider, mini festivals with hand picked ales are a speciality, no sticking a pin in a list or picking cheap old dross here!Huge garden and large car park are also a feature as well as three real fireplaces.
A fantastic range of ales today! Many on only due to customer requests,Hophead, Winter Meltdown Wolf's Remus ( they must do a Romulus) I'm sure most will get the obvious connection, Harvey's B.B.iIchen Russian Winter and Homecoming. So far this pub has only received two awards this is unbelievable! I bet it gets more! Fully booked is the outing to Dark Star Brewery to enjoy their legendary hospitality. If you decide to eat here be warned the portions are very big indeed.
This pub has a Mini Beer Festival starting on Thursday. The local CAMRA Branch will award this pub the pub of the Season for Winter, this award is clearly deserved as the ales and food are normally tip top and if a roaring log fire is your thing then look no further as they have.. wait for it... THREE ! Pub games and banter proliferate.
A decent sized local's boozer with a large open area in front of the bar and a smaller, quieter section to the rear. Harveys, Summer Lightening, Brains Rev James and Dark Star Winter Meltdown were on today, with the latter especially in good shape. Pump clips of old line the walls as testament to the pub's commitment to providing an ever-changing and excellent array of ales. There may be signs of wear and tear around the place, but it seems only to add to the place's charm and it's really quite hard to find fault with the atmosphere generated within. There always seems to be a decent sized crowd of punters in here when I visit and the staff are friendly and helpful. Well worth seeking out.
Harvey's Xmas ale 8.1% is on now, gravity dispense. Avoid at all cost.Far too b****Y strong! Hic !
Strangeest visit to a pub in nearly 40 years ! A good first pint followed by a frothy pint that tasted of dishwater , inexplicable!
The Cricketers have a beer festival starting on the 5th November for four days. Several great ales, including Brother Rabbit Thornbridge, APA and Hophead from Dark Star, Cotleigh Nutcracker and Harvey's old.
Apparently ALL real ales are now 2-00 Momday to Friday between 10A.M. and5 P.M.( to fans of Biggles that would be 17 :00 hours). The Golden Sands from Southport Brewery is outrageously good.Hobgoblin from Wytchwood is on currently.
The Crick have put there Hophead on stillage and are charging 2-00 a pint! This is due to a number of factors such as higher anticipated volume and less wastage as this beer is always very frothy.hophead from the barrel is an absolute revelation.Southport Breweries Golden Sands will be on hopefully next week.
A message to Slerpy. This is not a chat room site. suggest you go to "twaddle" or "Facebook" or No friends united" if you want to chat to your mates.thanks
Jaipur on stillage , slerpy is going on holiday- woe is me!
Yes - Alph I found out yesterday, I did NOT get the date wrong -Ray changed it at the last minute.
Slerpy ~ you got the date wrong! The festival is on NOW!!
The Cricketers have a Beer Festival starting on the 16th of July until the 21st of July . The festival is themed as North .v. South. The beer list that I have seen is very promising, the Crick will invite you to vote for the beer of you preference and will come to a conclusion as to wether North or South produces the best beer!
Jaipur will be a regular gueat about once a month, Ray will order at least 3x9's as it flew out the door in record time. Please remember it is 5.9% and is obviously NOT to be disrespected.I took a 4pt. container away and was very happy.^O^ ^O^ ^O^.
The Jaipur hit top form today, Alph River eulogised about it!Ray has scored a major coup, Jaipur returns in four weeks time, it is the Cricks fastest ever selling beer! The other beers (as if anyone cares !) were Icarus (Blindmans) Mandrill ( Brass Monkey) Hophead ( Dark Star) Harveys BB. A mild from Burton Bridge.Their cider had just gone.
Ahhh ! Lovely Jaipur ,probably Britain's greatest beer, the only problem is ,is its quaffability! I'll be sober tomorrow.
I joined Ray and his "very merry men" for the breakfast club yesterday. Thornbridge Jaipur is on today and Saturday, he has 2x9's so get a move on! I am prepared to be proven wrong ( wife's speciality) but believe that this is the first time this multi award winning beer has been served in a pub in South London.Knock down Slerpy time! Ohhh! Remember that it is 5.9%.
A beer festival will take place in July, fear not ,Ray has a state of the art cooling system which is used on the stillaged beers.I've seen the list of beers and there will be a mix of golden and dark ales.More info shortly.
Happy birthday Ray ! A mere youngster ! Different size takeaway containers, 4 pints 8 pints and a very durable 10 litre container for hire. huge discount on takeouts.Superb Hophead, HPA Wye Valley, Harveys, Dorking Mild, Brass Monkey and Old Rosie cider.
An excellent pint of Harvey's and friendly Irish bar staff. Wonderful.
Today the Crick excelled itself. Several great beers on including Brass Monkey Brewery Mandrill 4.2 % A spanking new Brewery ( it's not often monkey and spanking can be fitted into a review !) ! Other beers included Hophead and A.P.A. from Dark Star, Harvey's BB and Summer Lightning from Hop Back.A new Cask Ale club is about to be formed please ask Ray about it, discounts and other features make this a wonderfully innovative idea.
Ray is running a beer festival from the 7th April through until the 10th. it will have a "light 'n Dark " theme, if it is half as good as the January one it will be spectacular.
the Cricketers have started a special offer on takeaway real ale, any beer is only 2-00 a pint. they sell special ( pressure release valve ) reusable containers at 2-00 a go !This is very handy when you are having a B-B-Q or simply wish to avoid drinking and driving ! The response so far has far exceeded the guvnor's expectations.Apparently we have another beer Festival to look forward to in early April, the last one was nothing but sensational !
Im glad to see that this pub is still getting the good rating it deserves, if you like real ale and a good pub atmosphere; I think you will enjoy this venue.
I visited the Cricketers with three friends on Friday 30th January, and thoroughly enjoyed the session.
A fairly lively crowd of friendly locals greeted me on entry, and, it was virtually a matter of seconds before I was in conversation with landlord "Ray". He took the time to show me round the pub and familiarise me with all the facilities before my friends arrived, and was very apologetic that the Dark Star Hophead was off.
Out of 4 ales on, our group enjoyed the following:
Harvey's Best, 4%, which I noted as being on absolute 10/10 form, the best I had tasted it ANYWHERE for well over a year;
Westerham British Bulldog, 4.5%; pleasant, rounded taste, sweetness and citric notes balancing each other;
Twickenham Winter Cheer, 4.8%. Good strong "finishing pint" darkish with some malty notes generally very "clean" and drinkable.
It was a very relaxing and enjoyable evening, and made all the more so by the hospitality of the landlord. The pub fully deserves the high marks afforded by previous reviewers, and gets another from me!
Riach, You will have to wait until May for the next one, the crick will feature at least five milds on the next one.
Visited the pub when beer festival was held 18th 17th 18th Jan 09. excellent selection of beers/ friendly local pub, the manager knew what was what with his beers.
Visit & use these beer festivals or lose them. I rate this pub festival 10 out of 10.
Riach
riach - 20 Jan 2009 00:13 |
I'm gonna share this, i am just back from the crick, try the Great Orme Celtica, Dorking Ruby, Hidden,Burton Bridge,Oakleaf. I could go on but suffice to say that the Festival is Real Ale heaven ! You want proof ! even the wife smiled !
A Beer Festival starts here on Friday 16th January . A very good range of beers, including a few esoteric brews. Sixteen beers on at any one time.
Friendly, busy and a bit tatty. Only two of the six handpumps on, due to better-than-expected sales over the Christmas/New Year period (who says there is no demand for real ale?). Nice pint of Westerham Puddledock Porter. A proper pub.
Keep checking biker, IV used lots of pubs in my time but I have only just become a recent user of this web site, we all have to start somewhere. beersupper i dont buy pubs I just use the best ones.
Mrpalmer just buy the bloody place.
To give a rating on the pub you use the most and like the best, or to give a rating on a pub you have never used. Or have only used after you rated it. Which is the genuine rating? As a new user we all have to start somewhere and why not rate your favourites first?
Another one pub user i see.
Good over '60's new menu introduced - value and looks good but not sampled 'cos not quite hit that special age yet!!! Peter's roaring fires make the pub warm and cosy. Bar staff Tracie and Teresa make the pub totally welcoming. Best proper public house in the area.,
Has slerpy been drinking diesel again ?
When the reaL ALE IS SOOOO GOOD IN CROYDON why go to Reigate to meet Mapwizard and the sycophantic biker and williams ? Reigate has not had a GBG entry for many a year and remains a real ale desert.
Its obvious that we all have different opinions of what makes a good pub, I have drunk in pubs since I was 18 Im now 61 I have only recently become a member of beerintheevening.com which is why I have not rated many pubs so far. What is wrong with giving the pub I use most and like best with a good rating? Rudeness on this site is unnecessary and unbecoming.
Presumably I am supposed to be one of the multiple names used by one person to rate this pub who has never rated anywhere else, well, now I have!
Yes...in there today. Awful. Palmer and slerpy should get lives - and brains (now available on the NHS). Muppets excluded.
Jealous of what MrPalmer i think its the other way around as most people have more than one pub to comment on (except the six people on this pubs site),you can throw the odd one liner in about another pub ho hum i would suggest you get out more!
What a load of jealous people, the pub gets a good rating because it is good and you dont like it. You have most likely never been in the pub!
Totally agree with biker and beersupper. That slerpy has a lot to answer for; he thinks he's 'BITE's Croydon Pub Reporter' - he should get out more, from Croydon !
Beer supper, I can readily assure you that this Pub Of The Year 2007 is going from strengh to strengh, I post regularly on here ( too regular if Alph River is any kind of judge). Ray a very nice guy has had an extra handpump fitted and has a polypin of cider ( any other dispense such as through a handpump does not appeal. O.K. some kind of bandwagon is rolling but justifiably so.my journey here is long and hard , a two mile walk to the bus stop a diversionary inspired sight seeing trip around Croydon followed by a mile walk from trinity School, the trip has become a pleasure!
Another Cheap advertising stunt going on here me thinks or is it the last SIX people to make glowing comments on this pub only use one place ??(click on user name to see were else they have been) Dog ?cat? nope its Bulls```t .1/10 fo the cheek.
I love this pub, Whenever i come in I always feel welcome. Being a real ale drinker this pub is ideal they serve a wide range of ales which are always top quality. The Landlord Ray realises the real ale niche which a lot of the other pubs in the area seem to ignore.
This pub is great for all drinkers with an emphasis on traditional pub style. There is a wide range of food and entertainment and your gauranteed a great pint, theres not much more you can ask for really, top pub!
cheers ray
This Pub is likely to please 98% of drinkers and diners. No pool table but 2 x TV's, Music, Board Games, Cards, Books, Quiz Machine and Fruit Machines are entertainment enough. TVs & music are never too loud so you can have a chat without shouting. This is probably the only pub in Croydon that is always busy. There is a car park and huge garden, albeit in the wrong place to always be busy. The patio makes up for that and becomes the epi-centre in the summer, with a BBQ and Parasols. Nip next door to Tesco if you run out of ciggies. The regulars are a cross section of society with different colours and creeds all made welcome by delightful, attentive staff. The Cricks over 60's club is for anyone up for a natter by log fires offering meals for 3.50 between 12 and 5pm Mon-Fri. All in all, this is a pub not a wine bar and thanks to owners Ray and Theresa Snadden, there are always Events, Bands, Party's and more importantly, good people there.
Great pub shame about Ray.s terrible jokes
phlyd - 25 Nov 2008 19:52 |
Bar maids are totally lovely and very professional. Ray is OK too !!!
Pleasant traditional beer drinkers' pub, there is a good range of beers, some of which change on a regular basis and they are always in very good condition. Clearly the Landlord takes a pride in his beer and likes to try out different breweries.
The staff are friendly, have a good sense of humour, and the food is good value with generous helpings.
Ive been a regular at this pub for the last year and Im very impressed by the good old pub atmosphere, You always receive a friendly welcome from ray the landlord and staff. The pub offers a good range of real ales, never a bad pint at reasonable prices.
Found my way in here because of a long flight delay at Gatwick. Was very lucky as it was also the start of one of their beer weekends. The regular beers are Harvey's Best and Hophead, they also had Arundel Sussex Mild, Dark Star Over The Moon, Tanglefoot and Burton Bridge XL Mild. I had the Sussex Mild which was ok but not great.
The landlord said he was ready to let me try some of the festival beers, there were 10 out of 12 on gravity and I think the other two were going to be put on the pump. George Wright Pipe Dream was a wonderful golden beer, Howard Town Wren's Nest not as good but got better as it went down. Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild was as flavoursome as ever. The rest of the beers on the list weren't necessarily that unusual (Summer L, JHB, Umbel Magna, Pale Rider but also Orkney Red MacGregor, Burton Bridge Porter etc) but it was a good range. Despite trying the landlord wouldn't take any cash from me for my three halves as I seemed to get designated official taster.
Had the Burma chicken curry which was also very good.
This is a real locals pub but not one where you feel excluded.
Fantastic.
Large local pub whose landlord apparently drinks lager but realises the importance of a wide client base (and I'm not referring to their waistlines!) so puts on several ales as well. Moorhouse Pride of Pendle last night as well as Dark Star Hophead.
Big old open-plan pub with very high ceilings. The front bar area is a bit like drinking in a huge barn but there is a tucked away area around the side of the pub. Six ales including Harveys, Dark Star & Lodden. Sadly the quality was a let-down for a current camra pub of the year, the Ferrymans Gold was tired & the Hophead had turned & was undrinkable. The prices are incredibly cheap for both food & post-budget drinks. I hope we caught the beer on a bad day & would like to give it another go on a "meet the brewer" evening if more are planned.
This pub iritates me due to the constant need to ask for a top up , after the third request my pint is at least 8% less than a full pint.
Ray the Landlord had a great night with beer festival a couple of weeks ago. As a complete novice I was delighted to be able to try lots of different types of beer in the 1/3 pint glasses, there were lots of new faces just for the beer. It's great to find this in the local area. Well done and keep it up
This week there were 6 handpumps serving 3 Dark Star beers, Harveys, and 2 others I can't recall, because after 3 pint of Dark Star Original I couldn't remember the way to the gents... Every time I come here it gets better. Croydon Male Voice Choir turned up last week and drank the place dry while leading the community singing. Excellent!
I like this pub its great for real ales, watching sport and the custom are friendly enough and will always be up for a chat etc but could do with a bit more entertainment they had a great karaoke night here last saturday though
anonymous - 14 Nov 2007 00:11 |
A superb, proper locals' pub. The landlord is very enthusiastic about real ale, sometimes hosting "Meet the Brewer" evenings. A must if you are in the area.
First time visit. A great pint and well worth going a bit out of your way. I'll be back!
Just off to revisit this fine pub which is tonight awarded Croydon Pub of the Year 2007 by the local CAMRA branch. There are fine Harveys, Itchen Valley, Westerham, Gribble and Adnams beers on, and the likelihood of even more selection later.
The extensive no-smoking areas are a welcome foretaste of the nationwide ban coming soon, and the provision of a quiet area for drinking and talking is refreshing.
Honest reasonably priced home-cooked food available, which looks good. Cheers,
Attended the Westerham Brewery "Meet the Brewers" evening last night. Great atmosphere, packed out. good selection of excellent beers. Founder of the brewery, Robert Wicks gave a speech showing his firm's love and devotion to traditional brewing especially their attempts to recreate some old recipes of the region including sourcing rare yeasts from some historical yeast depository and their use of English hops.A most informative and enjoyable few hours. It's nice to be in that rare thing: a pub where the loudest noise was intelligent conversation. Congratulations to Ray, the governor.
Great local pub. Looking forwards to the Westerham Brewery evening on the 23rd April!
A real rising star on the Croydon real ale scene. The landlord is making a stakhonovite effort to promote good beer, and has not only had all sorts of great offerings on, but is doing regular promotions with different brewers- Westerham next. Well done.
Beers sampled here last week: Westerham BB; Itchen Hampshire Rose; Welton Old Cocky; Harveys Sussex Bitter. All were in particularly fine fettle, especially the Hampshire Rose. My mate was very impressed by his first visit, and intends to return bringing Croydon Male Voice Choir with him after their next practice! They like a decent pint apparently...
The landlord came over to our table and asked if we were enjoying the beer. We were impressed by his personal attention, and assured him we were enjoying both the quality and the range of products on offer. Too often a pub with more than a couple of ales have quality contron problems. Not the case here it seems.
He told us there will be another "Meet The Brewer" evening at The Cricketers on St George's Day, Monday April 23rd. This time it is the turn of Robert Wicks the founder of Westerham Brewery. Looking forward to sampling the beer. Last time I went to an evening here, there were about 9 or 10 beers available, not just ones from the visiting brewery either.
This pub is one to watch.
My god! I am shocked to read these reviews.
When I were a lad (mid 80's)and went to school down the road, this was one of the pubs we used to use (when we were all old enough to drink naturally!) and it was well nothing special.
I am nothing short of damn well excited to hear that the pub has become a seller of decent beer and am resolved to re live my youth with a trip there soon.
Fantastic news!
Delicious Loddon Brewery ales this week, and Twickenham Beers, and Harveys, and Timothy Taylors, and I could go on. This pub goes from strength to strength. A landlord who is genuinely interested in beer, and friendly locals. Can't beat it! Cheers,
Prominent pub on a busy junction, a half mile walk from Addiscombe tram stop. An unremarkable open plan layout but staff were welcoming and the atmosphere was friendly enough.
Four ales on handpump (Harvey's Best plus three guests); I also caught the tail end of the aforementioned beer festival with five additional ales on a stillage in the back bar at discount prices to clear, including Copper Dragon 1816 which was in peak condition and a very nice pint. I switched to Taylor's Landlord from the main bar (@2.40) when that ran out, which was also in good nick.
An addition to the Good Beer Guide for 2007 under Addiscombe. (Not to be confused with another pub of the same name near Lebanon road tramstop.)
Last night there were 8 different real ales on (9 if you count GK IPA) - 5 of them in casks on stillages! It was however a special event: the pub was hosting an Adnams "meet the brewer" evening. The Adnams Best was good, but the Broadside was excellent.
Ordinarily, Harveys Sussex is always on, and there's a revolving choice of up to 3 guest beers. The atmosphere was friendly with a wide mix of people of all ages all enjoying the free beer samples, snacks and prizes.
All in all, a pub to visit if you enjoy a good pint from a smaller brewer, rather than the run-of-the-mill stuff which unimaginitive licensees stock seemingly everywhere these days.
It's also a comfortable place to watch rugby and soccer. I'll certainly consider returning.
Cheers,
Average pub, average beer - just average really.
