please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Something of a shambles. We visited at the rough halfway point of a circular walk around Portland and were gagging for refreshment. Unfortunately, it took about half an hour to get served although they did let us have the drinks on the house. The waiting staff were clearly working very hard so no fault there.

The pub sign says it's a 'freehouse'.........b@ll@cks.
How can it be when the choice is Ringwood 49er and, yes, the dreadful Doom Bar.
When a landlord has a free choice of ales why pick this tasteless concoction?
Nice location but totally wasted.

Although I travel round a fair bit I have not visited this pub but you will see from some of my previous postings that my opinion of Doom Bar is similar to Cellarboy, Colmc and Mark888. Since the Coors takeover of Sharps the standard of Doom Bar has gone downhill markedly but it seems to be even more available countrywide than the dreaded Greene King IPA. Tastebuds of the UK should unite in protest!

I too agree with Mark888. Doombar is really pissy stuff since Coors took it over (the bottles stuff isnt even brewed in Cornwall anymore).
Spartan needs to sort himself out

I can only agree with Mark888 why waste your thirst drinking the sweet bland Doombar when there are so many fantastic small brewers beers available.
Sparton seems to think that he is the only one entitled to an opinion which in my book makes him the bigot and of his 4 previous comments 3 are negative, very sad man indeed.
colmc - 18 Jun 2015 18:24
I FIND THE COMMENTS OF MARK 888 TO BE HIGHLY OFFENSIVE HE IS INSULTING EVERY DOOMBAR DRINKER IN THE COUNTRY WHO DOES THIS SELF OPINIONATED BIGOT THINK HE IS, I SUGGEST EVERYONE SHOULD LOOK AT HIS OTHER COMMENTS ON VARIOUS OTHER PUBS ALMOST ALL NEGATIVE THIS IS INDEED A VERY SAD MAN

Polite enough service but extremely crap beer. Why does anyone serve Doombar when it tastes nothing like real ale? There are so many local breweries within 10 miles, so get some beer from them. It's all very well boasting of local food, but get your beer sorted first!

Very, very disappointing . Place shabby, entrance dirty ( should have been a good clue! )
Food mediocre, place NOT busy so when I requested the pie with new potatoes with veg to be swapped with the scampi with chips and peas - not possible !
So my husband who hates chips, but wanted scampi with new potatoes and veg, whilst I wanted chips with my pie, swapped them at the table!
Was told the Pulpit staff couldn't do it as they STUCK to the menu when busy - I counted 10 brave folk in the pub!
The ramp for disabled visitors led to small steps in and out of main door and the seat coverings were ripped with a carpet split and glued in places.
Not a happy lunch - husband sick later that night, not saying it was Pulpit food - BUT !!!!

Visited on Monday. Ringwood Best (3.30) and Pedigree. Pub a little shabby but can't beat the view.

I'm sorry. But i have to agree with the others. A little on the pricey side. And closed at 4pm on a Saturday when the placew was crawling with Tourists.....Why

I have visited many times most recently in late 2009. Agree very pricey but good ale, very warm welcome and the crab sandwiches are delicious! I am in Weymouth this weekend and will hopefully get over to the Bill for a visit.

Well known locally as needing a second mortgage to buy a round!!

Outraged by having to pay 7 for a pint of coke and pint of lemonade. Nearly left with the glasses as I assumed we had paid for them as well. Spoiled a lovely day on Portland bill. Crab was nice though

Stopped off for a pint while walking the dog round the bill old fashioned looking place with a big function room on one side not very busy for a Saturday and they did close in the afternoon, usual Beer range on sale .Courteous landlord though later i found out that the locals very rarely use the place and is it up for sale 160k but with work and the trade it"s position must bring the proverbial gold mine me thinks!

I must admit to being a bit hacked off with this place.
If you run a pub at such a location as Portland Bill, then you are catering for the tourist trade. You must be - there's no locals. The local tea shop was swarming at 2.30pm on the Tuesday after a bank Holiday. This place was closed. Normally I'd not rate a place I've not been in, but I walked nine miles to find the pub was closed.

Drank Ringwood whilst watching the sea from inside - glorious day so most drinkers outside but we needed to cool off having walked the coast path. Food a bit pricey but has a lot of fish available with tasty jacket potato and generous side salad

This pub has THE best panoramic views of the channel.
The food was first class, the welcombe by Danny was warm and friendly.
The specials boards was full of local caught fish crab and lobster. You could not ask for better food, host, or view. Danny thank you

Great location but found it to be the least welcoming of all the pubs on the top of the island. Couldn't believe it shut at 4pm as the tourists there were queueing up to get in.

A friendly pub that is well worth visiting for the view alone. High quality food and drink. Comfy outside seating overlooking the English Channel.

Helps to complete an enjoyable day.
