user reviews of the Perseverance, Wraysbury

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Was in here on Friday night to sample the wares of their beer festival and also to have a meal. It's a pub that stretches round from a cosy seating area at one end to a dining area at the other, with an L-shaped bar. The pub had hosted a Meet The Brewer event with Binghams on the Monday and had a few of their ales on. In addition, they had a number of former champion beer of Britain medallists. The selection was Binghams Vanilla Stout, Twyford Tipple, Brickworks Bitter, Space Hoppy & V Old Ale, Thornbridge Jaipur, Tiny Rebel Cwtch & Pheasantry Best Bitter. Ciders and Perries were Westons Country Perry, Hand Brake, Old Rosie & Rosie's Pig, Sandford Orchards Devon Red, Orchard Pig Philospher & Explorer, Hogans Hazy Daisy & Panking Pole & Cornish Orchards Farmhouse & Blush. The meals we had were ok. But the highlight was the beer. I'm not sure how many ales and ciders they have outside of festivals though.

"If the idea is to attract diners may I suggest the Manager removes his Hat and tucks his shirt inside his trousers whilst serving food. "
I personally like the jaunty angle with which the Manager wears his hat. The cut of his shirt also striking.
"One the other hand if it it's to be a welcoming Local, the Manageress needs to resit the hospitality part of her course - she's more friendly outside the Pub than inside."
This is utter nonsense, "The Manageress" is always welcoming both inside and outside of the pub.
We do seem to agree on the quality of the beers though.
If one has observations and or criticism then would it not be best to make these known to the staff at the time of visit. Not to hide behind the anonymity of a forum.

The Perry is neither Fish nor Fowl.
If the idea is to attract diners may I suggest the Manager removes his Hat and tucks his shirt inside his trousers whilst serving food.
One the other hand if it it's to be a welcoming Local, the Manageress needs to resit the hospitality part of her course - she's more friendly outside the Pub than inside.
That said, whilst the atmosphere resembles a library sometimes the food is both reasonable and moderately priced and the Beers are always in good condition (the usual Doom Bar, and visiting treats)
I've been generous by scoring it 5 but with a little more effort it could score higher

Having become a regular of "The Percy" since Nick and Sarah took over, I can't speak highly enough of the job they're doing.

The food gets better and better and the mix and rotation of regular and new cask ales keeps things fresh. Keep up the good work.

Updated rating from 8 to 9. I hope to give them a 10 in the near future

On a long and ultimately soggy walk from Iver to Staines, we decided to lunch at the Perseverance.

This is not a luxurious pub. Minimalist would be a better description. Bare floorboards, some interesting old photos on the wall but little else and fairly basic furniture give it a very basic feel.

Beers available were Doom Bar and Abbot ( surprise, surprise) and also Windsor and Eton Guardsman, which we went for and was very good. Unfortunately it ran out, so we had to revert to the Abbot, which was actually OK.

Menu was quite extensive. I had a home made burger, whilst my colleagues went for Liver and Bacon and a Xav Burger. This last is the house specialty - a home made burger, chips, salad and then every possible trimming you can think of, including black pudding ! All food was very good and the Xav burger achieved its aim of making my fellow walker feel very fat indeed.

Lady serving behind the bar was very friendly. Not hugely busy - apart from us 3 just another 3 guys turned up whilst we were there.

All in all a pleasant experience and one we'd be happy to repeat. My only gripe is that ruddy Cornish beer.

One way or another, I've been going to the "Percy" for 30 years. During this time it's had its fair share of highs and lows. Sadly, of late, the lows outweighed the highs - that was until Nick and Sarah took it over. Now it's back to its former glory and the best pub in the village. In fact, it's a proper village pub. It's really comfortable and clean inside, there's a great garden outside, the food is excellent and not over-priced, there's a great selection of beers, the wine is good value, it's dog and kid friendly and the owners make you feel like wanting to come back.

The Ale is very well kept, tried the T.E.A from the hogs back Brewery went down a treat, also had Doom Bar and Old Hooky and a couple of Ciders,The food is also very good the new owners are doing a great job.

Having lived in the village for many years, I have seen both the pubs slump. The Perseverance however has made a big change for the better.

On my latest visit, I got talking to the new owners and they tell me they have an 18 year lease and are intending on being there for the foreseeable future.

Yes, the place could do with redecorating and a few more ladies behind the bar, but the tasty real ale and the good looking food is a great place to start.

I wish them all the best and will return soon with friends.

Contrary to the opinion of others on this website the pub is very good. I was most impressed with the barman who was quite elegant in the way that he poured a pint, it was almost as if 'bitter ale' should change its name to 'sweet ale' because I have never been poured such a beautiful pint. I attempted to buy him a drink because of this, but he politely asked if he could put the money in the tip jar as he wasn't a big drinker. A true gentleman. The only thing I could say against the pub was the lack of a pool table, but the barman reassured me that one would be put in over the next couple of years.

Absolute gem of a pub.

Regards,

Mike

(Yet) another management team - this time with a long term contract I'm told.

The new couple seem plesant enough, The Food is adequate (not exciting), the Beer choice is reasonable (not tantalising), the small bar is cozy but the bigger bar feels unfinished. and the whole Pub needs a serious injection of character and personality.

Whether the new team have what it takes to turn this currently mundane Village Pub into a characterful, welcominge and eventually successful eating and drinking establishment is yet to be seen. Wraysbury needs a good Pub and so I very much wish them and the Pub the best of Luck

New managment since Oct 2011 very friendly. Nice prices and great food now being served! The introduction of the Quiz night is amazing.
An improvement from before!

The Percy is becoming a really nice village pub. The new management ( a mother and son team), have put a lot of effort into the garden, even including a little kiddies wendyhouse full of toys! Lovely to sit out in the garden, flowers abounding, the river stream running past at the bottom, whilst sipping a cold pint. Lagers are limited and would prefer to see Kronenburg on tap, but the Stella Black is ok, and the food is fantastic. Just what a village pub needs to be.

NOT GOOD
Boy has this pub gone down hill over the years, I live nearby but I wont be visiting it anymore.
Last lunchtime visit, 2 pints of shandy for 7.50 they weren't very cold and tasted awful.
Lunch basic omelet and chips, no garnish, though it tasted ok it was small serving 7.50
Barman no attempt to be friendly, lady who brought food was OK.
I'll be using the Stag in Datchet instead from now on. No wonder more people stay at home.

Great little country pub, have lived the area for ten years good to see it doing well. As for the Bollywood music I have never heard it but wouldnt care if there was some plenty of different prople to cater for in wraysbury and they cater for every body in the percy (especially vegies try the halomi fish and chips its fab) and there is always new people in the pub which is great to see people back in the pub. I visit most weekend evenings and always a nice environment. It will be sad to see the currently landlord leave but as the rumors are going about that they are looking at other pubs in the area good luck and I'll see them where ever they go.
SlavetoAle - 7 Aug 2011 22:48
AVOID AT ALL COSTS.... Manager lost control. Pub now 'run' by a raucous group who go behid the bar and put on their own Bollywood music and have their Curry delivered and eat in the Bar stinking the place out!!!

Now as expensive as Mayfair... TWO Ploughman's, 1 Pint Shandy 1 Pint Coke 24 !!!!

Management claims to be leaving and has financial backing to buy the lease of the George - which no doubt will soon become an Indian Restaurant.

thePubGhost - 7 Aug 2011 08:21
NEW MANAGEMENT!!!
A confident, experienced (they say) mother and son team who on a limited budget are making improvements and appear to be trying hard.
They claim The 'Percy' will be a Food, Wine and Ale house.
The Doom Bar was in fine fettle on my last visit, however it would be nice to see a wider choice that the standard company issue.
It certainly looks an improvement and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished article.

What a shambles - we went there last night as it was the landlords birthday bash. Don't know what he was up to with the real ale. The pumpclips showed Youngs Special and Theakstons XB. NEITHER BEER WAS BEING SOLD. There was a clique of people who were asking for Doom Bar which was not on the bar or on any pumps. I think there was some kind of code going on that they were being sold beer cheaper than others!. My friend ordered Doom Bar, and surprisingly it was a lightish coloured beer, which this beer clearly is not. It looked and tasted the same as Theakstons and the Youngs. It is clear that the landlord picked something up from BOOKERS when he brought the party food and was making out he had three beers on when he REALLY ONLY HAD ONE. I am sure Trading Standards would be interested in paying him a visit, as this is a clear breach of the LAW. Does he really think his customers are that stupid that they do not know what they are drinking. Get a grip and stop ripping off your customers ROO, we are fed up with your cheap scams. Toilets are filthy and overall the pub is not very well kept. Time to clean up your act and toe the line if you want to stay in business, else clear off and let someone decent run the pub.

Thanks mim, some good points made. But you weren't so much 'correcting' my post as 'updating' it - since more than three years have passed in between!
Trev - 25 Sep 2010 11:07
Correction on the last comment. Food is served ALL DAY everyday. I took a few walkers in for lunch and verified this fact. First time I've used this venue. Good pub grub and the ale was in good condition. As far as anonymous' comment below goes I cannot see the link with this pub. Must be malicious competition or someone with a grudge from the past. There are many comments like this on this site. One has to take what one reads on here with a pinch of salt and get an average feel from all the comments. Pubs are having a tough time and it is upsetting to hear of some 40+ pubs closing for good every week in the UK. Lets support our pubs and our publicans who work long hours so that we might turn up at any time to enjoy a cooked meal or just a pint.

What a difference a little over 2 months makes! OUT go the guest beer board; the table menus; the starters and desserts (and hence the 2 course deal); the home-cooked pies, casseroles, liver, fish, and weekday roasts; the side dish of fresh veg. IN come just six different grills (all with chips) and four flavours of omelette. Clearly targeting a different clientele now: not diners selecting wines to go with their various courses, but drinkers who may get a little peckish whilst drinking. A bold move, and the current effect is a deserted pub. In fairness the beer is well served; food is nutritious, attactively presented and reasonably priced; and service is friendly and pleasant. Other changes: food service now ends at 2 instead of 3 Mon-Sat, 3 instead of 4 Sun, 8 instead of 8:30 Mon-Thu evenings, 8 instead of 9 Fri-Sat evenings - and the nice 60s/70s background music has been replaced with Virgin Radio: all chat and commercials. Time will tell how this goes down with the good citizens of Wraysbury.

Don't understand all this Iceland crap. Perhaps Anonymous has an axe to grind? I love the Percy for all it's quirkiness. Real Ale selection limited but you can usually be assured of a decent pint of Directors. Good and varied lunchtime menu. Don't go there in evenings so can't comment further.

Don't know what 'anonymous' is talking about. What do you mean by 'ice land food'? I've been back again and had a lamb casserole with a fruity gravy that just must have been homemade, served with very crispy roast potatoes (just like Mum used to make), roast parsnips and a side dish of several more fresh vegetables. All for under a tenner. If you can get that in Iceland, I must go to Iceland more often ...
Trev - 24 Aug 2006 16:56
Rubbish beers found here.. watered down spirits within... Cheap overpriced ice land food your thing? Well come on in.
anonymous - 19 Aug 2006 17:04
Amazing selection of cooked food - large portions, reasonably priced and with a side dish of hot cooked veg. All served from 12:00 to 21:00. Also cask ales: Wychert Original, Courage Best and Directors. I think it's a great pub. Probably wouldn't suit the 'burgers and Stella' brigade though!
Trev - 20 Jul 2006 14:19
Avoid this place well overpriced stale ale rude staff dirty seating bar so sticky the flys cant get off!
anonymous - 18 Jun 2006 19:37
Food's good and priced ok, nice beer garden and a couple of decent ales. Bit short on entertainment though could do with a pool table and sky.
ajs400 - 13 Mar 2006 13:46
