Changing hands in January sold for £1.5 m
Lets hope it goes back to being a lovely village pub not the poncy place it is now.
ThePilgrim - 8 Dec 2016 13:04
Snug and Smug I see where your coming from.
flyingnun - 2 Nov 2016 11:51
If it`s true it`s sold that`s fantastic news
I love it when smug arrogant people get their comeuppance, it looks like it`s happened here to two very snug arrogant people in fact kings of Smug & Arrogance.
I agree with the previous comment and hope the new people bring back the village pub feel.
giveusabeer - 29 Oct 2016 17:45
Not surprised the pub has just been sold again. This lot had no idea, basically killed off a lovely locals pub and created a city eating house, What`s the point ???????????

Lets hope the new company turn it back to a village friendly pub.
Dementer - 25 Oct 2016 12:29
Sorry Richard , I know the previous owners and when they left they had a 4 * rating the new kitchen on there first inspection gained a 1 * rating.
The people who have it now have not got a clue how to run a village pub and destroyed a much loved one.
stroller - 22 Sep 2016 11:57
Stroller, I checked the dates at the time, the one-star rating seemed to predate the takeover and kitchen refit. A lot of foody pubs are having trouble with officious jobsworth inspectors who don't understand how cooking works - the White Hart at Witley, the (admittedly depressing) Percy Arms at Chilworth and the Canbury Arms in Kingston have all fallen foul. The pub trade's confidence in inspectors is at a low ebb - there's a definite need to review their working practices and guidelines. So I'm prepared to give the Grantley the benefit of the doubt in that regard - but there is no excuse for what the new owners have done to the place!
EccentricRichard - 16 Sep 2016 15:44
No EccentricRichard it was the new owners with the one star, they just kept it quiet by not putting the sticker up. I think your also being polite in calling them what you have, they have destroyed a very good village pub, what lunatics would kill the whole atmosphere of a historic place like this.
The food is very pretty but on the whole not worth the money and as for the bar prices, well take your Coutts card.
Nice to see some new ideas ie quiz on Mondays & live music on a Wed`s if they had brains look out.
It`s all money money money.
stroller - 28 Aug 2016 05:30
I suspect that the 1-star rating must have been the old management. It's now a 4-star establishment, having been inspected in May. It's still lamentable what the bastards have done to the building, though.
EccentricRichard - 22 Aug 2016 23:26
Just checked out the pubs `Scores on the Doors` score.

One yes just one star out of 5 for hygiene at a so called `Gastro` pub.
Dementer - 25 May 2016 18:12
Now know locally as The Ghastly Arms.

The way it`s been decorated is fine in anything other that a 400 year old building.

All the heart has been ripped out of a once proud olde world pub, tourists hunt out places with tradition, this now has none.

If I wanted a picture on a plate i`d hire an artist, I don`t need diet portions either.

Rant over Toddle pip
FredCarno - 21 Feb 2016 12:59
Unbelievable, this place blasts on about it`s heritage (circa 1590) then does everything to get rid of the evidence. Gone the iconic Friary sign that`s hung outside this pub for over a hundred years.
Who ever decided to all these changes should be hung up by their `Gonads` from the nearest lamp post, knowing this village that would be Bramley.
This pub has been destroyed by some poncy idiot who wouldn`t know a village pub if it bit his privates.
Guildforddrinker - 15 Feb 2016 16:57
Cellarbuoy you could lose your sole here as the portions so small.
anonymous - 1 Feb 2016 14:20
I've just been banned from the Grantley's Facebook page for daring to criticise what they've done, ripping the heart out of this formerly lovely pub. Bunch of twats. Here's a big fat zero for you.
EccentricRichard - 30 Dec 2015 13:32
OMG what has happened, fellwalker your spot on.

Gone forever a once great homely village pub. Lovely food was the bench mark along with local beers and a good chat.

All gone kapoot.

What a difference a couple of months mean
stroller - 4 Dec 2015 18:30
Oh, dear! The soul of this once heavenly village pub has now been torn out in the interest of making a quick buck on over-priced, under-sized meals. Fortunately the beer is still excellent, served just as bitter should be. (Timothy Taylor's Landlord and Dark Star when we visited.) But the food….! Magnifying glasses should be provided so you can find the food on the plate! My two tiny pieces of venison were miniscule, chewy and tasteless. My partner's burger was dry and tough.
This was our first visit since the "refurbishment". We did so love visiting this pub, but now…How have the mighty fallen!

I'm going to give this pub a decent rating because this is a beer website, and the beer was truly good. But we won't be eating here again!
fellwalker - 4 Dec 2015 11:16
Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Whats happened to this once lovely warm friendly cozy pub? Now a cold bland pub, you could be in chain bar anywhere.

It`s lost it`s sole.
anonymous - 3 Nov 2015 18:55
We still find this the best pub in the area by far for Sunday roasts, very good range of ales & lagers, with lovely friendly staff.
stroller - 6 Sep 2015 19:15
This is a lovely pub, staff always friendly, place is clean and well looked after.
We were here for a birthday party, the buffet was excellent with more than enough food for our party.
There were five ales on 2 from W J King brewery,1from langhams brewery and 2 from Pilgrim brewery.
I stayed on the Kings beers which were clear crisp and moorish, the wife was on the wine and she liked the choice.
Looking at the comment below it sounds as it`s coming from a right old whinger,if you had a problem with your soft drink price have a word in the pub don`t be a faceless git on web sites, also dissing the food (when you`ve not even had it) because you had a problem with the drinks is the act of a coward.
FredCarno - 12 Sep 2013 11:00
I am frankly disgusted with the pub's pricing policy. I drove over a couple of weeks ago (August 2013) to see a friend's band and was charged the best part of £4 for a lager shandy (50% lager, 50% lemonade) and £2.40 for a pint of soda water with a dash of lime cordial. £2.40!! That is basically extortion. Some places will give soda water away for free as it's just fizzy water so the £2.40 was for the cost of the cordial which probably cost tuppence. Needless to say I won't be returning, this is no way to treat drivers for a pub that's off he beaten track.

The food looked stodgy and disappointing too.
Guildford_resident - 8 Sep 2013 06:42
Visited avec family on Friday evening. The blonds had cheeseburgers - big juicey and home-made - not just the meat patties, also the bread / buns too - absolutely top draw. My fish and chips was out of this world - pefect crispy batter - fish moist and perfectly cooked: heaven! It came with peas (minty - jum!) and great chips

You have to check out this place. The owner seems a friendly down to earth guy. He obviously knows his beers - Pilsner Urquelle AND Budweiser Budvar on draft - both kept very well.

Infinitely better than the Jolly Farmer
Scepticus - 16 Sep 2012 21:22
For a thirsty boy the Grantley has really upped its game. Regular beers from Windsor & Eton, Arundel, and even the new Tillingbourne. All in good nick. Friendly staff too.
Longer opening hours please! ;-)
thirstybob - 12 Feb 2012 21:07
Always worth a visit this, one of our favourite pubs in the area. Food is well presented and of good quality and quantity, though perhaps a quid or two more than you might normally expect to pay elsewhere. Nice interior and friendly enough staff and always a good range of beers on as others have said. Of particular note today was Orkney Dark Island.
PhilR - 8 Jan 2012 14:47
A circular walk from Chilworth led the Ramble Then Lunch team to a lunchtime stop at the Grantley Arms.

A large traditional style pub with lots of seating. Only about 6 customers when we arrived at 1300 but but this rose to about 18 at its peak. Quite a dark interior with a lot of fusty looking books in one alcove. A conservative pub in what I suspect is a Conservative area.

Beers - Horsham Bitter, Chestnut Ale and Red River ( all W J King), Windsor Knot from Windsor and Eton and Hampshire Rose from Itchen Valley. The Chestnut Ale was on a special at 1 a pint so two of us plumped for that. A very strong tasting beer with that coffee-ish type taste you get with Shepherd Neame. Despite the price it wasn't my thing so we moved onto Windsor Knot, with which I was very impressed. Can see why they kept it on after the Royal Wedding.

Food - my fellow walkers had an all day breakfast and a jumbo cod, with which they were both very satisfied. In an effort to watch the calories I went for Chicken Goulash and wish I hadn't - a pretty unspectacular lunch which left me looking enviously at the other meals.

Staff were friendly and efficient.

The Grantley Arms was a pleasant enough experience - nothing terrible but nothing exceptional. Perhaps if I'd had the breakfast though ...
ramblethenlunch - 10 Oct 2011 10:05
We came here at the weekend for a special birthday party in the Grantley Arms function room with skittles and a sit down meal. Everything was great: service, food, atmosphere, etc. If you have a special do to organise consider this, very relaxed and fun.
CBright - 3 Aug 2011 19:31
Always an interesting and varied selection of well-kept real ales. Much appreciated as a traditional pub which has not yet succumbed to the 'leatherette' makeover treatment. Good food and a couple of outdoor seating areas in the summer. Real fires in cast-iron stoves in bleak midwinter. Recommended!
sotweedfactor - 19 Jul 2011 19:05
Still one of our favourite pubs for both food and drink, the real ales are always well kept the Horsham Best Bitter which has been their standard ale for years is still only 2.95 a pint you will not find better in the the near by pubs.
stroller - 29 Jun 2011 10:41
We still use this pub whenever in the area and always find it very friendly, the range of beers has got much better since it became a `Freehouse` with Kings Horsham Best always on, they also had Langhams ales on last week which I had not supped before but both were very clear and hoppy also 2 others which I did not try.
As always a very good choice on the menu, we settled for the Sunday roast which had a choice of 3.
They have changed a couple of staff which we found an improvement.
anonymous - 18 Aug 2010 10:02
Good beer and excllent service - well worth a visit
GRS40 - 2 Aug 2010 18:07
Good pub good range of real ale wide choice on the menu.
FredCarno - 1 Apr 2010 10:57
Good spacious pub this, good diverse range of beers as well as lagers, comprehensive menu.
Now a Free House.
On the way out noticed a skittle ally in the back function room.
Shanty - 22 Mar 2010 15:08
Dropped by at Christmas when a barrel was being changed. I've never ever seen anybody take so much trouble to purge the lines in order to get the beer through in good nick. Most impressed. Despite my thirst it was worth the wait. A pub that takes beer seriously and favours the darker less modern ales.
thirstybob - 2 Jan 2010 20:30
I popped in here only very briefly, and on a night when I was taking a rest from ale. It looked like I had cause to regret that, as six handpumps dispensed three or four real ales here, including Horsham bitter and a guest from the Stonehenge brewery. What with various bottled ales behind the bar, it looked like the pub takes it beer seriously. Like many country pubs, the pub obviously had an eating-focus and the food smelt good. I liked this, and would return.
grecian - 30 Aug 2009 09:06
Not particularly impressed. Average food and no atmosphere. Beer kept ok, used to love this pub.
rosieog - 24 May 2009 18:47
Fine food and service fairly priced.
A very good range of beers served by staff who know their ale.
Very impressed with the Horsham bitter, an absolute joy.
This is one of the better pubs in the area
oldhippybeer - 3 Apr 2009 17:57
Nice food, plenty of space but you need to book (as with most pub's 4 Sunday lunch). Great choice of ales. (visit Feb 08)
newtobeer - 23 Feb 2009 23:36
Went here tonight for a skittles night with work. Pleasantly surprised by the food we were served up and the selection of beers, being Horsham bitter, Old Hooky and Abbot Ale...nice.

Guy behind the bar (not sure if he was the landlord) was friendly and seemed happy to serve.

I live just down the road so I will return soon to try again at a non-work event.
beergibbon - 27 Jan 2009 22:54
Above average in all respects and reasonably priced for the area.
FAB1 - 6 Jan 2009 08:25

Smallpiece - 29 Jul 2008 10:35
This pub has a great quiz on monday nights. But why does it not start until 9pm? Large selection of food, although menu has not changed in ages. Beers are well kept but a bit pricey for my liking. Staff however are very friendly.
one_for_the_road - 27 Jun 2008 21:59
Six of us had lunch yesterday(Sunday)mid afternoon it was very relaxing the roast was very good same as the beer and wine, the thing i do like here is if you like cider you have a choice of 2 on draft (Stowford Press or Thatchers Gold)which you don`t find in a lot of pubs.We have not been here for a while good to see it`s not changed since our last visit. We would like assortedcreams recommend this pub to others.
anonymous - 31 Mar 2008 10:52
Visited on a Saturday lunch time, 6 adults and an infant. Full marks for the excellent food, staff who could not do more to help and pleasant atmosphere. Strongly recommend this pub, next time will visit by bus to sample the local ales.
assortedcreams - 9 Mar 2008 11:55
Have been going to the grantley for about 4 years on and off and have to agree with all the key points about it. The ales aren't a great selection and wine lovers should seek out the wine list at the near by Jolly Farmer instead, but for anyone who wants a lazy afternoon late lunch it is perfect. Have been here with work to use the function room too and this is very nice and includes an old style skittles run to add fun to the evening (shame it can't be used regularly though as far as i know)
glasswar - 15 Feb 2008 18:10
Its been a year since i posted about this pub we have called in 5/6 times over the last few months and the standard is as good as ever. The ales change weekly i had the Lone wolf,Horsham & Doombar there were a couple of others on as well. The meals were very good to.
For a relaxing evening well recommended.
stroller - 30 Apr 2007 14:07
Had some good Horhsam ale, whilst my wife enjoyed some good cider (no ice thank you) last weekend. Food was excellent. Good atmosphere, friendly if over-worked staff. Slow food service, but we wheren't in a rush. Will go again.
pwr - 30 Aug 2006 22:38
This more a place to eat than a drinker's paradise but an ok place to stop when you are out and about
Will2 - 30 Aug 2006 17:41
Ate here with last night with my family (table of 8) and we were all mightily impressed with the food despite waiting an hour and a half!! Admittedly the place was rammed to the rafters but this is still too long.

However, I went here to sample the range of ales all other reviews mentioned. I started with a pint of Summer Lightning which was fine but upon returning found out they had sold out so I switched to 6x which again was fine only to find out they had sold out of that as well on returning to the bar! I then switched to Horsham which again was very pleasant but surely on a busy Saturday night you arm yourself with the necessary staff/ale to cope with demand?
givemeale - 20 Aug 2006 19:38
Have been using this pub for about 4yrs now & thort it about time we recommemded it to others.Food is always to a high standard sevice is also very good staff friendly which you do not always get.Good choice of beers. We will carry on using this pub when we r in the area we live in Farnham shame it was not closer
anonymous - 4 Jun 2006 09:15
First thing that hits you with this pub is the size much bigger inside than it seems from out.Nice relaxed atmosphere, good food varied choice of ales.
anonymous - 18 May 2006 08:40
I do find the recent comments about this pub laughable. It's obviously some orchestrated marketing campaign. As such I shall just disregard them. I liked the sound of the peasant evening though!

Anyway apart from the desperate need to advertise, this is a good pub for beer. You can always get a good pint here. Good Atmosphere. I don't eat pub grub so can not comment on the nosh.
apintofaleplease - 2 May 2006 20:18
WE found this pub quite by chance a about 2years ago can`t fault it on anything we have had here. The food IS ALL homecooked not like some that says it is when it clearly isn`t.Very reasonable price`s across the whole large menu.Have taken friends there and all have agreed what a relaxed and friendly place this is .FULL MARKS FROM US.
anonymous - 2 May 2006 19:12
One of my all time favourite pubs.Quite historic go`s back to tne 1600`s.Had a cracking night in there a week ago and noted an Irish night this bank holiday which i hope i can get to .Keep up the good work one and all.
anonymous - 28 Apr 2006 07:22
Great pub - Top food, top beer and top staff. Many a peasant evening has been spent here over the past 15/20 years.
anonymous - 27 Apr 2006 17:44
Had another night in this delightful pub today can not stress how good this place is.six very good draught ales to choose from Jennings Sneck Lifter was very moreish & the Broadside was one of the best pints i have had in a while, the food was up to the normal very high standard. What more can i say.great place.
stroller - 9 Apr 2006 09:28
My friends and I have been going to the Grantley for a long time and have always had excellent food (served with a smile) and also enjoyed the good range of draught beers that are available (never had a bad pint yet!!!). The locals are friendly and the pub has an atmosphere which we have always enjoyed. Gloomy it is NOT, Old English Pub it truly is, no minimalism here thank goodness.
CB46 - 2 Apr 2006 19:00
Group of friends booked a Skittles night at this delightful pub and had a fantastic time. The food was good and very reasonable the staff were very helpful nothing to was to much trouble the landlord was very friendly and helped us arange another night as we had so much fun. Will be telling friends about this pub.
anonymous - 2 Apr 2006 10:17
Great food & beer. The homemade steak&kidney pie was the best i`ve had in an age the otherhalfs salmon was also very tasty& cooked just right. Horsham Best very tasty as was Hook Nortons Old Hooky did not try the other 4 as it was my turn to drive.Staff very chearful& friendly the service was very good. You could tell this was not a booring chain pub. Will be calling again very soon even though we live in Tolworth& found this charming pub by chance. 5 STAR IN MY BOOK.
anonymous - 2 Apr 2006 10:06
called in the othere day good choise of real ales.Had a meal with friends all agreed home cooked food 1st class sevice, very friendly sevice. We all will be going again & highly recomend other people to do so.
anonymous - 24 Jan 2006 10:13
A bit dark and gloomy and the opening hours can be "traditional" but the beers are generally better than OK (expect at least 4 good ales). Not cheap but reasonable. Its a shame that the Hogs Back "Grantley Ale" has gone but the Horsham Ales are good.
Rather more an eating than an drinking pub (the food is of good repute). N.B. A signficant number of real locals drink in "The Club".
thirstybob - 26 Nov 2005 19:12
Fab food and the wine is good!
treacletart - 19 Nov 2005 20:35
Excellent home cooked food
Chris - 15 Sep 2004 17:29
please note, week-days, c. 12-3 then 6-11 .

great pub, cycling past, popped in for one, stayed for two and food . they have an house ale brewed exclusively for the pub by hop back brewery, it was the best ale that i've had in the past six months or so . huge inside, so it can do the whole restaurant bit which country pubs have to do nowadays, but without its infringing one bit on the pubiness of the place . the food was very good . had a genuine local feel to it . well recommend
