Pride, Shere Drop (3.30, ok) and Andwell Gold Muddler. Smart inside, seating outside on grass and in a courtyard.

Went for a dinner on Saturday with the family.
Its hard to find just of the green in wood street village.
But well worth it, the new owners took it over a couple of weeks ago,
we walked in the door to be greated by a warm open fire, lovely decor and friendly staff.
We were 8 in total and everyone said how much they had enjoyed there evening and the exceptional food, as anyone will tell you trying to please all the family is very hard, well done to the white hart.
You can even see the chefs cooking as its an open kitchen, which is fun.
i will be back soon with my friends, beer was good too which helps ;)))

Hoorah our village pub has reopened!
The new food menu is extensive, reasonably priced, something for everyone here, and huge starters too! Sunday roasts are back. The beer is good well kept and at the moment Black Sheep and London Pride are on offer. New furnishings provide lots of leather sofas and tub chairs, and low leather cubes (are these for walkers to put their feet up?) The publican is friendly and welcoming, shows interest in his customers. We like it.

At the moment it is closed being refurbished, we locals wait with baited breath to see what type of establishment emerges- we can only hope for a return to the welcoming atmosphere from yesteryear with decent nosh good beer a warm real fire!

We've been to this pub three times this summer - twice for Sunday lunch - and found it very enjoyable - great roast beef and yorkshire pudding - and friendly staff. Both a pub to drink at, or eat at, or both!

Hmm, well the locals really want to support this pub, but it's hard work and you need to be resilient to keep faith with the old place. Hidden away so no passing trade unless you're on bike foot or hoof, it should be serving its community but seems to be confused about who the customers are. Please rescue this pub someone and help secure the future of a crucial element of village life.

We visited on a Saturday lunchtime in the middle of the cold snap in December with the snow. We sat in the barn part of the pub/ restaurant and it was freezing. All of the curtains were shut in an attempt to keep the cold out, which gave the place the feeling of a crypt.

The service was very good, the menu good, and the wine list absolutely fine. There is no childrens's menu which is a drawback, especially given how child friendly they seem.

Possibly a better Summer venue. Needs much better heating or double-glazing.

It used to be a village pub that welcomed all. Now they don't want anyone with muddy boots and so have alienated hikers, walkers and horse riders. It is now a restaurant serving expensively arranged small portions of food, with less tables to sit at and a high bar to discourage standing there. 10pm on a Friday night and it is dead. Avoid. Let it go bust and be replaced by someone who knows how to run a pub.

The propriety of comments is in this forum is unverifiable - "Bar is excellent" indeed. But having just commented on the Cask Pub and Kitchen in Pimlico, something came to mind about the White Hart - it serves loose tea in a pot with a decent volume of hot water, at a reasonable price - and that deserves some recognition.

Great food and service.
Bar is excellent.
Cosy lounge area for drinks after meal.
My favorite restaurant in Guildford.

I don't usually comment on these websites but was looking for the postcode for this pub to send to a friend and was shocked by the negative reviews. I live relatively locally and although there are other decent pubs closer we always go to the White Hart.

The food can be expensive but you get what you pay for in my experience and the portions are of a very good size.

Most of the time we just go for a drink or two at the end of a working week and always find the staff very friendly and helpful. We also take family there for a drink when visiting us and from brothers and sisters to parents and grandparents they have all loved it and been made to feel very welcome. I have recommended this pub to everyone I know in Guildford and will continue to do so.

I see no one has commented for a year on this seemingly busy pub and that the positive comment put up a year ago was put there by someone who has never commented before or since.

We were in the White Hart on Friday night, the Hogs Back TEA smelt like someone had put a bit of vinegar in it and tastewise was the worst condition I have ever experienced that great beer in. What more can I say?
Trinker - 23 Aug 2009 11:08
unless you are eating(the overpriced food), don't bother they don't want you in and make it very obvious, go to the royal oak up the road for a genuine pub and a warm welcome
littlecon - 10 Nov 2008 17:13
The real ale is really moreish here. Hogs Back TEA and Fuller's London Pride are both superb. Often a third real ale on. This is a food led business, but seems to be developing a side club of beer drinkers.

Great decor, food and general ambience. APPAULING service. Having heard that the service was slow i was heartened to see that someone who looked like he may be some kind of manager greated us - i mistakenly thought that this would mean we would be looked after. We sat with our finshed dirty plates for half an hour before he even approached us to see if we wanted anything else. We had pre ordered but this did not seem to speed up the process at the start either. Its such a shame because this is exactly the kind of place i wuld like to go more often but the service was so under expectaions that i would be embarrassed to recommedn this place to anyone . Such an easily fixed problem.

This is a cool charming and pleasnt experience for the intelligent diner. Listen in to locals chatting about the village pond or Horticultural Society chit chat, or sit next to another group and listen to professionals relaxing at the end of a hard week in the City and sharing views on the week's world events and news. In another corner find some young folks with lots of social talk and laughter planning their night out later in the week to Guildford Town centre. The atmosphere in this out of the way pub is eclectice and of course variable but the characters and ambience is interesting for the observant casual visitor. Now for the food, well Thursday to Sunday seems to be a lot better than Monday to Wednesday. The meat is supplied by a local specialist company, menus change fairly often and although occasionaly the chef gets it not quite right at leats she is experimenting, but if you catch one of these you could be mistaken in thinking all the food is at the same standard, the majoity of my experiences here have been very acceptable but then I eat here most weeks!
There is a rather drafty double sided fireplace, but on a warm evening its a great place to chill out with friends on the big squashy leather settees.
This pub has souls an dlocals and village cheer, enjoy and smile at me I may be the one standing at the bar, cheers.

In a beautiful old building in a picturesque village, tucked away behind quaint little cottages just off the village green, I had high hopes for the White Hart. The old building had been beautifully restored and the dcor was immaculate no corners had been cut when designing the new interiors.

Shame that same love and attention didnt extended to the service.

After a drink at the bar we were shown to our table where we ordered from the reasonably priced set menu, although I noted at this point there wasnt a lot of vegetarian options. We all ordered fish cakes to start followed by the roast beef.

After waiting nearly 20 minutes for our starters with noone coming to our table to explain or apologise about the wait, I called the waitress over and asked for some bread. After 10 minutes had passed the bread still hadnt arrived so I asked another member for some bread, which arrived pretty promptly but was followed pretty quickly with the first waitress bringing another basket who then rolled her eyes, tutted very loudly, and told me off for ordering off another staff member as she would now have to go and remove one lot from our bill. I though the fact they had added bread to our bill after we had waited so long was bad enough so her rudeness on top of this I found absolutely appalling.

When our starters did arrive they were burnt. They had a nice wusabi sauce though.

After our first course we had another long wait for our main courses and again no one came over to explain, or even offer us more drinks.

When the main courses did arrive, the meat was burnt around the edges, the vegetables were cold, there wasnt enough potatoes for three people and had a miniscule amount of gravy on my plate and as the meat was so nasty and dry I asked for some more this then took 10 minutes to arrive by which time everything was cold. Needless to say at the point I had given up.

When the waiter came to clear our plates, mine was still full my mum and boyfriend had eaten half, he asked if everything was ok and I started to point out what was wrong, to which he stopped me mid sentence with a filthy look and said
well madam I think youll find thats the first complaint weve had all day and just walked off, no apology, nothing!

We had heard the table next to us discuss amongst them selves how appalling the service was so weather they were planning to complain I dont know.

I had visited the white Hart to celebrate my birthday and left feeling father upset at the way we had been treated, it put a real downer on the day.

I have to agree with janeo on our visit we found the place has lost its pubiness and warmness for a cold restaurant feel, its also very pricey.Might work else where but not here.

Wow...... anyone wanting some fine fresh food must give this a try. Beautifully refurbished, very friendly staff, a great simple wine list that wont burn a hole in your wallet. They have a different menu during the day, and in the evening have a restaurant style menu with steaks to die for. Its not a huge menu but its all freshly home made, none of this microwave rubbish you find in so many gastro pubs, wich i wont name here. It also has a very nice patio area which, when we finally get the good weather, will be a very peasefull place to dine.
You realy must give it a go.

I have been to this pub quite a few times, before and after its refurbishment.

Before: a pleasant country pub; welcoming staff; family-friendly; a simple menu, well executed; reputedly, the ales / beers offered were decent (I rarely drink alcohol, and even then I stick to wines, spirits, and liqueurs, so I rely on the judgement of others in respect of ales, beers, and the like; one of my friends is a trained brewer and distiller and has worked in the trade, so he knows a thing or two).

After: as above, but moved well up the scale. A wide-ranging menu, again well executed; a good range of drinks; a very pleasant atmosphere; welcoming staff; family-friendly; and above all, the wonderment of being non-smoking throughout from Day 1 of its re-opening.

A call ahead to book a table is almost always essential, for the place fills up fast, and stays that way, at both lunch and dinner.

In short: very highly recommended.

This used to be a great country pub, now it's a soulless restaurant. Don't bother.

Re-opened early December 2006.

the white hart is currently undergoing a major re-furb, re-opens in 2 weeks.

Great food with big portions served in the evenings too. Reasonable selection of real ales - only over-shadowed by the pub down the road! Nice old pub.
