please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Traditional Robinson's corner house that was very busy on my Saturday lunchtime visit. Most people were finishing off meals. But there were plenty of people just there for the ales. A unique feature here is a snug, which you have to walk through the bar area itself to get to. Initially I thought there was just a huge number of bar staff, until I realised that some of the people wandering behind the bar were actually punters. The pub only stocks Robinson's ales. They had Unicorn, Wizard, Dizzy Blonde, Trooper & Light Brigade. Most of these were fairly pale ales. I opted for the Wizard. A bit out of the centre. But worth finding.

Quite a contrast to the other Robinsons pub we tried on our Stockport crawl (Bakers Vaults). This is a very traditional old school boozer and probably retains pretty much the original layout, woodwork and glass.

The hand pumps are hidden at the back of the bar, if I remember rightly there were 6 in total, 3 on each side. All were Robinsons ales I think. We went for a pint of Hopalulu, a 4.6% blonde, which was fine, though I think I was expecting more hoppiness!

I would be happy to pay another visit.

Fantastic food and good range of robinson beers. A hidden gem in this great town of Stockport with all its great pubs.
Thelittleman - 31 May 2016 14:23
I would honestly say this is the best place to eat in stockport town centre and the beer is good too. A very traditional robinsons pub well worth a visit.

More of a restaraunt than a pub. It's a real pity. This used to be a great place.

Called into the Arden Arms last Saturday night. We tried the Unicorn, Trooper and 1892 ales - all of which were excellent. The pub is full of character and now has a nice conservatory area attached, which was really popular. This was by far the busiest of the pubs on Stockport crawl - and it was easy to see why.

Nice traditional pub with several rooms and outside areas for smokers and sunny days. Not a fan of Robbies Unicorn but the Double Hop here is a great pint and better value for its strength/price. Like most town centre pubs it has a very varied clientele througout the day and is usually bustling and lively, a testament to its popularity in the current economic gloom. Food is excellent, try the cod and chips or steak and ale pie if it's on the menu. Lastly a mention of the staff, who I have always found friendly and efficient.

A traditional pub with great food and well kept beer. Coal fires in the winter. Great beer garden for drinking, dining and private functions on sunny days. I understand it was runner up in CAMRA's UK pub of the year a few years back as well as winning the Manchester Food & Drink Festival pub of the year. I live 2-3 miles away but it has become my local! Great Quiz night on a Tuesday and relaxing muted Jazz on Monday nights. Weekends can be busy and there are often private functions, usually in the beer garden. Soup and sarnie combos are great value but it's all too easy to be tempted by the specials of the day..I know as I eat there at least once a week. Best to book a table at weekends, but you can enjoy restaurant food at pub prices served by friendly staff.

I've visited this pub twice in the last few weeks. The first visit was on a week day, where we enjoyed a superb, if pricey, lunch. The staff were very organised and attentive. The pub had a warm friendly feel to it, and the guy who I assumed was the Manager was exceptionally welcoming.
The second visit was on a Friday evening. What a contrast. The noise was overwhelming, mostly as a result of the music being far too loud and people then having to shout over it. Some of the customers seemed unable to communicate without using foul language at the top of their voices. After a single pint we decided to leave for somewhere more civilised, which unfortunately meant we had to venture further than Stockport town centre.
I would recommend this pub as a lunchtime venue, but certainly not for its evening offerings.

A very interesting interior as already documented. Two real fires give great warm to the whole thing. I am surprised it wasn't busier for my visit (although I hadn't announced it).

I am not a connoisseur of Robinsons so my comment on condition would be superfluous - but it was drinkable - there seems to be such a close band of variance with their beer range.

Should be included on a visit to the area, not just for the tickers.

quality lil pub, with a great snug through the bar. beer was actully quite good although its only robinsons, not had chance to try the food but been told its really good.
Supreme_being - 16 Mar 2010 11:30
The interior is classically Victorian and I've always found the beer well-kept, both the Robbies Unicorn bitter and the cask of Old Tom they had on gravity dispense on the bar over Xmas.

I have mixed feelings about this pub. I remember it as it used to be, when it served the best pint of Robinsons bar none...

The beer is still pretty good, but the present management have gone for trendy and relatively expensive food, and I find the background music intrusive. Others will love these changes.

Still worth a visit, not least because most of its competitors have literally been demolished, and many of the survivors are pretty vile.

Attractive, unspoilt interior. I've eaten here on many occasions, the food is excellent, restaurant quality. Robinsons pub.
Chubbyduck - 8 Feb 2009 20:11
Good pint of Unicorn bitter and comfy surroundings
Big_G_unit - 19 Jan 2009 21:01
A traditional Robinsons pub with an excellent interior. The hand pumps are rather unusually at the back of the bar facing you. Five hand pumps but four available; Hatters, Unicorn, Double Hop and Dissy Blonde. This was the most expensive round of the day at 7.80 for 3 beers. We had earlier been advised by a local around the market area to eat there. We all chose to eat steak and ale pie and chips at 8.95. The food arrived pretty quickly and was very tasty, shame there was not more of it.
Love_good_ale - 21 Oct 2008 17:24
Fine traditional Robinsons pub with a multi-roomed layout, included in CAMRA's National Inventory of historic pub interiors for its glassed in bar and floor tiling.

Also of note is the grandfather clock and a small snug reached through the bar, which apparently is by invitation only - you're expected to ask rather than just walking through the bar.

I was slightly disappointed by some effort to adopt a more contemporary feel - in particular background music, which was a bit loud and some French bistro-style posters that I thought looked out of place.

The pub is highly regarded for its lunchtime food apparently.

The pub has an informative website - worth reading if you want to know more about the pubs history and facilities.

Worth seeking out - close to the Market Square in the old part of Stockport.

Classic pub with a wonderful interior. Serving most of the Robinsons range in tip-top condition.

The food looked great too....I think I'll eat there next time!
bensonby - 19 May 2008 13:07
Very good pub with interesting interior. Very busy on a Saturday afternoon. Good food including many veggie options. Three Robinsons pumps - Hatters, Unicorn & Tom Cat. Had excellent pint of Hatters.
Worth tracking down.
doncaosdelanada - 3 Feb 2008 19:32
Can't really add any more than the last review other than to reiterate it really is a classic pub.
andy99 - 29 Jan 2008 20:50
A genuine classic; RogerB has highlighted many of the interior features including the snug only accessible thru the bar (one suspects that may be just for the inner circle, haha), but note also the lovely rounded wooden sash-work windows around the bar, and black/white floor tiles.
Very popular for food, and starts filling with diners almost from opening time (12:00), includes good-looking specials menu at ~8.00.
The handpumps are on the rear wall of the bar, dispensing Robinsons in top condition. If the pub is very busy the bar area can be a little congested and make the route to the loo something of a corridor, but this a small price to pay for retention of originality in a great pub.

A very interesting pub, well worth a detour to visit. My husband enjoyed the beers served in here - they certainly seem well-kept. Top marks to the bar staff who remember details - despite being on our first visit, when I bought a second round, the barman remembered I didn't take ice in my drink. Such a refreshing change from the numerous places where the staff automatically ask if you want ice but don't bother listening to your answer. Only a little thing I know, but its the small details that go towards making a great pub - which the Arden Arms is.
Lilywhite - 17 Aug 2007 09:58
Superb traditional layout pub, with a friendly welcome, excellently kept Robbies ales and great food. A true gem.
wobblybob - 14 Aug 2007 20:57
This classic pub is on the CAMRA Inventory for historic and unique pub interiors and is well worth a detour to visit. Situated down the hill from the Old Market and round the back of Asdas it doesnt look particularly enticing from the outside, just a plain brick turn of the century corner pub. The interior is however a bit special. Divided into several rooms each with its own character including one that can only be accessed by going through the bar itself although I wasnt brave enough to march through to get there.

The bar itself resembles an old shop front with a partly glazed service area and serving hatches to the bars eitehr side.

To the right of the bar is a small plain public bar with dart board, various board games and a basic widescreen TV. Various old pictures on the wall include one of the pub itself that confirms that little, if anything, has changed over the years. Note the old calling bells dotted about behind the seats (not sure if they still work).

At the opposite end of the pub is the large Millfield Room which is actually 2 rooms with dividing doors that can separate the room when necessary. The room houses an impressive old grandfather clock, plenty of old pictures and mirrors and original fireplaces. Note the numbered doors, part of the original licensing laws where all rooms in a pub had to be numbered and listed for their purpose. In the area by the bar are some more interesting pictures including a contorted view of the interior and its customers. Several certificates have been warded for its beers and interior and these adorn the walls.

The beers come from the local Robinsons brewery a few hundred yards down the road, usually 3 on pump.

Outside is a small open air lobby that it probably best left for the smokers but to the rear is a large courtyard with several benches and stable outbuildings largely intact from its old coaching inn days.

An absolute treat and a must visit pub for anyone in the area.

Stockport has a few high quality public houses. That this is the best of them speaks volumes.Magnificent.
flambinos - 2 Jul 2007 00:13
Every aspect of this pub is top notch. They even manage to make Robinson's beer drinkable, which is no small achievement!
brianthetext - 18 Apr 2007 10:20
They Don't make them like this anymore!A fantastic and unique atmosphere. The Robinson's ales were on fine form on my last visit
GlobalFrank - 14 Mar 2007 11:10
Superb classic pub with legendary interior and decor. The Robinsons ales are excellent - especially Double Hop very tasty! Good food too - The Brie and Grape sandwiches are recommended. Well worth a look. An absolute gem.
DoctorBarfly - 31 Jan 2007 21:13
All the quirks of this place contribute to a very special public house. In addition the Robinson's Ale is fantastic and they usually have a choice of cask beers on at any one time. One of the very best pubs in and around the Manchester area
Frenchjim - 14 Jan 2007 18:02
Not in the same league as the Marble arch, but never the less a good venue. Nice pint of Robinson Unicorn, Double Hop and another one.
Unusual "snug" that you have to access through the middle of the bar while staff are serving.
Few wierd people in when we called
AlRobis - 14 Jan 2007 13:23
Superb! Robinsons always served in tip-top condition. Excellent - and real - food. Fantastic traditional pub interior. A must do whenever in Stockport.
wobblybob - 30 Dec 2006 11:46
Good food and all home made. Beer is always top notch with a good variety supporting the standard Robinson's offerings.

Landlord will take the p**s out of you on demand!
The interior is stunning and (I think) on CAMRA's protected interior listing (Rightly so)

No smoking at lunchtiime in the dining half of the pub.
beer50 - 12 Nov 2006 20:30
Food is excellent; also one of few places in Stockport that offers Robinson's double hop on draught. Children are allowed in the beer garden, which is a bonus for me.
brewJew - 11 Oct 2006 15:16
Quite simply a magnificent establishment
Gorbachev - 8 Oct 2006 22:03
Fantastic pub.The Robinson's is top notch and the interior has bucketloads of character. Its also a very friendly crowd in here. Its can get fairly cramped so arrive early if you're not one for standing up.Only slightly less fantastic than the Marble Arch in the centre of Manchester!A must!
Rameses - 29 Jul 2006 19:53
Great beer, friendly staff, first rate food that is affordable, what more can you ask? An excellent pub well worth a visit.
julianlb - 27 May 2006 12:49
Excellent pub. They did the catering for my Mum's 60th a couple of months ago and it was stunning. Recently won CAMRA's Regional award for best pub in the North West.
The_Incredible_Drunk - 21 Nov 2004 17:04
This is a marvellous pub.A terrific pint of Robinsons as well as a selction of other real ales. The interior has a great feel to it and the atmosphere is lively, jovial and friendly (though i've only ever visited it on a Saturday I have to say). Also free butties were handed round for hungry drinkers on my visits to the pub
James - 10 Nov 2004 23:07
Surprised this one wasn't listed already! Winner of numerous CAMRA awards for tasty Robinson's beer, top food and great surroundings, the Arden Arms is a real gem of a pub.

Steve King and Joe Quinn are the blokes responsible for rejuvinating this pub back to the high quality establishment it was back in the days of Jack May, before a series of less than able landlords ran it into the ground. The pub now gleams, with all of its original interior restored and a lovely beer garden out the back. Friendly, well cared for, with great beer & great food - and an award winner too. Can't ask for much more.
