Spent last few weekends in this pub.
Good range of beers, lagers and cider including real ales, all well kept.
The sunday roasts are tender and tasty...good portions.
The staff are friendly.
The customers are a mix of couples, families, friends, singles and dogs of all makes.
Good atmosphere.

A pub in the old town area of Poole that is painted in an unusual battleship grey colour, it’s no doubt an old building and was quite historic at one time but it’s clearly been refurbished and is now one large open room wrapped around a wood panelled, oval bar counter.

It has something of a nautical feel with blue and white paintwork and even white wood panelling on the ceiling along with a strip wood floor. There is a small courtyard area at the back and a couple more tables out on the pedestrianised area in front of the pub. There were a few black and white photo’s of old Poole on the walls and a brick fireplace on the left. The young barmaid had zero personality and seemed barely able to speak. Why on earth she thought she’d like a job that involved conversing with members of the public I can’t imagine.

Beers on tap were all from Ringwood with their Fortyniner, Best, Old Thumper and Boondoggle. Ciders were Thatcher’s Gold and Cheddar Valley.

A nice friendly Ringwood pub. I could have done with the volume for the live music being turned down but when I returned the day after (Sunday) it was enjoyable.

great pub drunk here for years on and off .bit concerned about lack of passion lately though.the old chef/cook used to do really great food and now its a bit of a non starter dont get me wrong foods good but it s just not as inviting as it was.also bar service can be very slow .i hope they get it together as it will be a shame to see the angel fall by the wayside..also quite expensive for a marstons pub as the globe down the road is alot cheaper..i think thats due to marstons not being able to get there act together.....

Soon be on my way back to Poole and The Angel, that's my local while I'm there, I was there every day for 3weeks when the Pub first opened and watched first hand how dedicated the new Young Land Lady was. I was so impressed with her hardwork and effort to get this pub up and running I went back to Poole for another 3weeks where friends from all over the UK came to visit, while I was there, there were many parties. A 19th, 60th, wedding ect.. Beautiful fresh homemade food.No complaints only compliments and rebookings. I had a couple of parties myself. Also they had a Mexican Night and the chillie was absolutely superb, 10 british pounds per head and eat as much as you want. my compliments to the chef.
There is no function room, but you know this when you book, up side good atomosphere and you don't pay for a hall.
Fatty123 you never mentionion how many guests were at your Christening party! and how much per head you paid. I would be interested to know.
I noticed there are not a lot of pubs that let you take babies and children in.
Dogs have always been well behaved and kept on a leash when I have been there. All this adds to make a good family pub :)
Myself I'm looking forward to eating there in the evenings again, and the lunch time Sunday roast. (I never missed one the whole time I was there, Wow real Yorshire Pud.)

I love it here!

Nice local pub. It has been recently taken over by a very attractive lady who runs the pub brilliantly. I'm considering having my party here because I hear the food is home made and excellent quality. I've looked at the buffets, they all seem good for the price. Shame you had, what you consider, a bad experience Fatty123. When I've been to this pub dogs are always kept on leads and are not free to wonder around. All in all it's a nice, family pub where children and dogs are allowed.

Went to this pub for a Christening party with food and a few balloons provided - no separate area for us, but fair enough. Total bill was apparently 120 and the food was awful - the absolute cheapest processed meat, potato salad from a tub, and I think there was quiche, but I think they were from a joke shop as it tasted of rubber. Perhaps 20 max spent on ingredients. Absolutely no service on tables - we had to clear away empty glasses. Dogs walking in and out past our table. Our host told the landlady he wasn't happy, and her reaction was just to shrug her shoulders and go "ugh". The staff then sat down to a nice roast dinner while we nibbled at rubberised sandwiches with stale bread. They also charge standard prices for Fresh Coffee, but give you instant. Avoid!

Decent pub with nice historic location

Me, I like this pub. OK Weatherspoons may be a quid cheaper but the beer here is in much better nick. Food is good (even if it is slightly pricey - compared to JDW) and staff are always friendly. Pretty bridesmaids at the weddings are a bonus LOL ;)
johnthechef - 1 Jun 2010 20:18
I read somewhere that the food was good in here so decided to visit and eat, let me tell you that it is not, everything is pre packed and frozen and heated by a micro wave technician. The dull Ringwood beers do not add any sheen to the experience. The pub was lively however due to the weddings being undertaken next door. Opened out pub with island bar. Won't re visit.

Excellent ales but probably one of the dearest pubs in Poole. Most beers now in excess of 3, some of which can be found in the nearby Wetherspoons on Poole Quay for 1 a pint less.
jasperdodds - 3 Feb 2010 14:16
Good locals' pub with excellent selection of well-served real ales. Shame that some of the staff and also the landlord are so morose and unwelcoming.
2BFrank - 10 Jan 2010 13:36
Excellent real-ale pub in the back streets away from the over-priced tourist traps on Poole Quay. Normally has four Ringwood ales and one guest beer on the handpump. Friendly locals' pub and well worth a visit.
BlandfordFlyBoy - 13 Aug 2009 11:24
Off the high street so nice quiet atmosphere. Good selection of ales but takes a while to get served unless you're a regular - also service with a smile is definitely not the staffs maxim!
HappyDays66 - 14 Jul 2009 11:13
An 'okay' pub in just about every sense of the word but nowhere near as welcoming as Ringwood's sister pub the Porterhouse in Westbourne.

The Angel does have a good beer garden though.

Gone downhill....The staff seem ruder than they used to be. Might have been taken over. Defintely less welcoming than last time. Beer is still ok. 5/10
clarkey_cat - 9 May 2008 16:26
This pub serves good beer in an atmosphere conducive to a good chat. It is a better option to head for here rather than the High Street.
pxk99 - 13 Apr 2008 20:47
If you like decent real ale, this pub is for you. Normally has about 4 Ringwood ales on plus a guest beer. Good place for a pint and a quiet chat, although it does have a bit of a 'God's waiting room' feel about it.
jasperdodds - 9 Mar 2008 11:52
No atmosphere and like other reviewers I experienced the landlady serving the arriving locals before me even though I had been waiting ages, that is just rude.

The Ringwood ale is well kept though but if you like lager the choice is pitiful - carling AND fosters, surely you are spoiling us?

messy_drinker - 12 Dec 2007 10:42
not a bad pub...well kept ringwood beers and one guest ale...
clarkey_cat - 6 Nov 2007 12:18
Good selection of ales...staff took our order and then served someone else who had just walked up to the bar.

Avoid.
davidashford - 29 Sep 2007 23:09
Service is much improved. Has the full range of Ringwood Ales that are well kept and one guest ale. Quite busy with blokes sampling their last moments of freedom (the Registry Office is next door).

Agree with SJC

Well-maintained pub in the older part of Poole. Ringwood beers well kept. The food was good too and reasonably priced. Surprising that this place isn't in the Good Beer Guide - it is worthy of a mention.
SJC - 30 Jul 2006 21:46
I agree it can be a bit too quiet sometimes but being a Ringwood pub it has the full range of their real ales plus a guest - never had a bad pint in there. Great pub grub as well.
anonymous - 8 Jan 2006 17:48
Ales well kept but as the previous poster mentioned this place is lacking in atmosphere. Also took about 10 minutes to get served when there were only about six or eight punters present with only one of them waiting to be served ahead of me.
johnkn7 - 24 Aug 2005 22:17
Nice food, nice pub, nice locals, very clean and tidy. Atmosphere seems to have died a bit in the past few months or so.
anonymous - 12 Jan 2005 11:22

Hi Gary,
Are you, who I think you are ?
If so this pub has a certain resonance for me, being an ex-booty etc.
Perhaps you could e-mail me or get your Mum to phone me on 07781 405273.
eddybet - 28 Oct 2004 14:17

gary fisher - 23 Aug 2004 21:20
Ringwood brewery owned pub with all of their range of beers. This pub is situated in the old part of Poole with Music Thursday nights.
