The Sally won't be the same without the lovely Samira!!! ;-)))

My guidebook for London is the a camra pub walks and today, I am ticking off the Hammersmith walk. Start in reverse, as I want to end up for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, who are on in the Apollo. So this is the first. King Street has little charm but this boozer was a classic of its type. Good pint of London Pride, although when I got around the corner, I saw they had ESB. Sat and watched the results come in. Only bad part of the day, Albion lost 4-1 to Liverpool.
If you want to avoid the crowds down by the river, then this is possibly the best pub in Hammersmith to head to. Benefits from not being too far from the Griffin Brewery, with a generous range of good Fullers beers always on tap. The foods also decent, and the beer garden at rear very nicely secluded from the nearby busy roads.
Popular amongst local workers as a after-work haunt, and not difficult to see why. Highly recommended.
The exterior of this pub is quite striking, with its purple tiling. Inside is a much more bland affair. Live football was being shown and most people were clearly there to watch it. A few were somewhat annoying, especially when one decided to fling his stool over spilling my beer in the process! I sometimes wonder why people get so excited watching football in a pub. If they're that excited, they should go to the game itself. But back to the beers. As a Fullers pub, there were only 3 of their ales on - Pride, ESB & Front Row. The pub probably benefits from its location on the main Hammersmith shopping street - King Street. Otherwise, I didn't find anything in particular to recommend it.
Used to be good but this place is steadily getting worse. As soon as the cutlery is laid out on ordinary pub tables you know it's on the slide as a decent option for drinks. I heard a rumour there are going to be DJs on a Friday evening, so the manager is clearly going for a kids' crowd, despite the fact that on a Friday most customers are from local businesses and council, after work, and are often the slightly older crowd. DJs belong in clubs and cr*p bars. This is a pub. Expect trade to nosedive and a 'revamp' within a year. Come on Fuller's - sort it out before it's too late.
Can't believe how this place has changed since a few years ago when I thought it was a brilliant traditional pub.
Aiming for the beautiful people now I guess and their larger wallets.
Beer not bad, but not for me any longer. No atmosphere. I've knocked off three marks since my last visit.
Agree with a lot of what the person below said it's a very nice pub, however not sure about attacking all the other comments, anyway the most recent ones mostly seem to be praising the pub? It's a popular place with a good atmosphere, in the evenings a good mix of people including office workers from the council opposite and other nearby workplaces. Ales always very well kept from when I've had them.
Salutation pub, is the most welcoming enjoyable warm happy palce to be. There is a new manager called amy she has changed the oub for the good and has made very good progress!
All of thoose comments above are very shocking i have been a regular in there for about 2 years now and the pub right now is more homely then ever!
Pub grub!! All of there food is fresh home cooked and delicious could not ask for a better meal. The service is fantastic very friendly and talkative. They light candles and the two fires they have every night its nice for a winters night. The garden is very spacious has heaters, covers and even little blankets for when you sit in the garden to keep your bum warm! what more can u ask for.
The ales are fantastic, they have a new stout called the black cab strong like ESB . All there ales and lagers are nicecly chilled, branded glasses to match each ale and beer.
Its a very enjoyable and relaxing place to be and everyone you should not listen to theese horrible jealous people above and check it out for your self! It will be the best pub u have evr been in to! once you have visted please comment your reviews.
Adequate! Lost a lot of it's charm, character and atmosphere. Where do people watch football now days? Always used to be packed during premier league games, now a mere half dozen supporters, no banter, no fun. Bring back the good old days. Toilets are nice though. Garden was always immaculate, no matter what the season, but it now really needs some loving tender care.
One of the better establishments on King St. Always worth a look in if you're in the area. Good vibrations, decent staff and well maintained toilets.
Nicely tiled exterior and a warm and modern feel inside. Wecoming bar staff and a very good pint of Pride. Snow and ice meant I could not linger as the tube was badly disrupted and I had a train to catch, but I would certainly call again when in this part of London.
I agree with most recent posters, this place has really come on. Unlike those below though I did not have the pleasure of Emma visiting me at our table the other night! Though we all kept a very close eye on her all night - does anyone know if she is attached??? She is utterly smutterly gorgeous!!! Amazing bottom Emma!
Nice place. Modernish feel but still has retained character. Nice outside area out back and good food. Fullers beers. Worth a visit and doesn't get too packed when there's something on at The Apollo.
The female friend (J) in our group had lived in the Hammersmith area for many years & had never ever been in the pub, She was very pleased & surprised by the layout of bar & especially the garden area to the rear of the establishment.
The staff are very friendly/welcoming, there was also a Vodka promotion event on the evening we visited, As Emma was collecting the glasses she came across & had a very intersting chat with us about the pub. A nice welcoming pub which had a good selection of ales.
This a a bit of a hidden gem in Hammersmith, slightly out of the centre, and so not beseiged by tourists. The exterior may seem a little intimidating for lone drinkers (a comment made by one of the female members of our party, although I have to disagree and say I love these old tiled pub exteriors) but as soon as you get inside you'll see it most definitely is not. There is a welcoming atmosphere, and the managers and staff are more than happy to chat about the pub and its histroy. There is a good range of Fuller's ales, and the garden is delightful, being a little oasis of calm away from the hurly-burly of Hammersmith life. At night, atmospheric lights go on around the garden, and there are plenty of well-spaced tables available to while away the balmy summer evenings. We all had a thoroughly pleasant evening, and will most definitely be coming back before too long.
I couldn't disagree more with the previous coments on the sally. The pub has clearly gone in all the right directions since its refurbishment last year.
The staff are now friendly, warm & atentive and seem to really enjoy what there doing, unlike some near by pub's where the staff seem robot like and struggle to strike a smile!!!
I was there for the England game last night with some friends. The atmosphere was fantastic and so much on offer to, bbq, sweepstakes, and 4 pints of very well looked after London pride for 12 during the match!! The service was as always great, and quick during such a busy time.
My friends and i wouldnt consider going anywhere els on Wednesday.
This pub has not been what it was since Rob left when the refurbishment took place. With him have gone most of the regulars, the atmosphere and the friendliness of the place which now feels pretty impersonal. I find the staff now to be pretty disintrested and it generally not to be too great a place to drink in now. I haven't ventured into the garden since the refurbishment but the table football doesn't sound like a positive addition, and I also heard a screen has been put up outside for the World Cup, which I don't much like the sound of - but doubtless it shall go down well with those who wish to watch sport.
I'd no longer recommend The Salutation, which is a great shame.
Situated along Hammersmith's main drag - King Street - The Salutation is immediately noticeable for its impressive and distinctive Edwardian blue tiled frontage. A notice on the outside tells us that "an old coaching inn has stood on the site since 1750. It was proud then, as it is now, of its traditional beers, travellers fayre and warm welcome". The current building dates back to 1910.
Inside, we find a long spacious single bar that has been opened out from its original incarnation, but retains some original features - mahogany bar back and fittings - and is not unpleasant. A recent refurbishment has not been dramatic, but seems to be indicative of a desire to be more of a bar than a traditional pub. We have a mixture of sofas, high tables and perches and, most unusually, a church pew style arrangement of 6 seats directly facing the TV screen over the bar. Disappointingly, the tiled entrance no longer displays the pictures of the Queen Mother when she visited the fine garden at the back of the pub in 1989.
The bar leads past a small conservatory style area into a largish paved beer garden with seating booths and a BBQ facility. A recent addition here is a table football machine and tournaments are planned. I'm doubtful whether outside is the best place for this table - who wants to hear the inevitable clattering sound whilst relaxing here away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby shops ?.
The Salutation seems to be trying to cover all angles and a postcard sized advertising flyer promotes the pub as offering "Food, Drink, Entertainment, Sports". It's also claiming to be Hammersmith's No 1 sports venue, a claim that I suspect could be legitimately challenged.
On the beer front, the London Pride - 3.05p - was in good form and the pub is listed in the 2010 CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Sadly, the long standing landlord, Southampton - supporting Rob, left at the time of the recent refurbishment and it is to be hoped that the excellent beer quality will be maintained by the new management team.
I suppose only time will tell whether this new venture will be a success or not. From my perspective, it's lost something of that pubbiness that it had when Rob was around, but it's still a reasonable place for a pint if passing through.
Really nice beer garden just coming into its own in the summer.
And can't fail to be impressed by the long blonde haired young barmaid (Emma?) - surely the most fabulous looking one in the city!! Beautiful and friendly!!!
Met up with a mate in here to watch the football, as very few pubs in the area seemed to have sky. The refurbishment on this place, which appears to be recent, must have cost a fortune, such is the look of the wallpaper, furnishings and lighting. Adequate pint of Chiswick served alongside the usual range plus a guest ale which rather took me by surprise. If I was in the area again I'd probably give it a go but couldn't see myself staying there all that long. The Swan, a nearby Nicholson's pub, looks a better bet for a session on the ale.
Not the same pub since the refurb. Atmosphere's gone and the service isn't very good now (don't think I saw any barstaff there who didn't look miserable). Doesn't really feel like a decent pub anymore. Shame.
Recently refurbished and lost lots of what it used to have including the previous guvnor. The big screen's gone but replaced with another plasma above the bar. Apparently part of the reason for the refurbishment was that they want a 'certian kind of people' to go there now. What they're left with is pretty much snobs who work for the council and have nothing to be snobbish about so come here where they can act like they do. Will probably still get a lot of people in for big football games but other than that gone downhill.
I echo the comments of below, Fuller's seem to be losing their direction. Out with the hosts as managers and in with the jumped up newbies who don't seem to know how to handle their clientele and show they are the boss by waving a big bunch of keys. Such a travesty if this goes to a gastro pub. Having being a loyal supporter of Fullers i am rapidly changing my mind. If they keep getting rid of the peoples choice of landlords then they deserve to lose their formerly high standing within the industry. I wish the outgoing landlord all the best. This is not the first Fullers pub that will go to the dogs in the area when a change of management moves in (if you need further prove check out the previously excellent Dove).
Reading in the H&F News this week that Rob will probably be leaving -Fullers are you totally insane? Rob and his team have made this pub what it is, a fantastic watering hole on a dreary street in Hammersmith, serving excellent Fullers beers. The food is good, very good and very reasonably priced, ok not gastro, but good pub grub. Does Hammersmith need another food orientated pub, when most of us want a good down to earth pub.
Also, in H&F, Durn only mentioned "football", Rob shows cricket, the Cheltenham Festival, Grand Prix, Rugby, etc, are we only going to be able to see Chelsea, Liverpool, Man U and Spurs? Some of us support QPR, actually quite a lot of us, and when it's on the telly we come in to watch as do lower division clubs when televised.
Another question for Durn and Fullers, will we still be able to watch the football results between 3 and 5 on a saturday afternoon? Will we still be able to sit at the bar, on a bar stool, and engage in meaningless conversation?
Reading between the lines, I do not think that Fullers are giving us the full story! Whatever happens, I urge Fullers with a passion not to take away the only traditional pub left in Hammersmith (you only need to look at whats happened at the Andover). On a final note, I can only thank Rob and Freddie for there excellent service, quality beer and making my local truly "local". I wish Rob every success and happiness in his future.
OK, I really like this pub, & (as others have said) it's an oasis in the arid Hammersmith beer desert. However, yesterday evening, I just had to point out to the barstaff that glasses should be grasped at the base, not the rim. The blonde, East European girl attempting to serve me thus didn't seem to get what I was saying at all at first. When she understood, she defended her practice with 'I've worked here 3 years & nobody's said anything', walking away as she said it. I spoke to the assistant manager, who was just as dense. I had to demonstate with a spare glass before HE got it! As he & the barmaid had each been similarly obtuse, dismissive & defensive, I thought I'd better speak to the manager. He was most concerned about my problem, offered me a drink, & seemed to take my complaint seriously. I suppose this is a question of using foreign labour cheaply & not training them to British standards of hygiene, health & safety. Hopefully, the manager will resolve this glitch, & I personally am not going to take the matter to Fuller's. In a way, it's the staw that broke the camel's back with me, as I've seen this kind of thing in just too many pubs everywhere in recent years. Some Wetherspoon's have a notice behind the bar reminding staff of good practice; but even there, it can happen! Rant over...The Salutation is still worth visiting, along with The Ram, Dove & Blue Anchor. I
Don't know for sure, but keep being told it's going to close, but I've not spoken to Rob to find out yet.
I stand by every word in my previous statement/comment about this pub from Apr 2008, 'cos nothing has changed, the only thing in it's favour, apart from the P&H (Guinness & Fosters - 5.08, Salutation 6.50 then add another 40p for a drop of blackcurrant, making Guinness 3.75 a pint), it's the best of a bad bunch. Don't complain to the council about the short measures or the 40p extras, the council staff drink in there as well
Could be wrong but apparently it's being closed soon to be reinvented as a 'gastropub'.
Romfordandy, since your last visit I think you will find that Rob, the guvnor, has had at least three bar staff changes since your last visit. Although fairly new, they seem to me a nice and friendly bunch. Give it another try as it is still the only decent pub in Hammersmith, serving the best Fuller's beers in the area.
As per many comments posted on this web site, why have a whinge after your visit and not mention it to the manager at the time of your visit?
I must confess it is my local, and assuming that it remains as it is, then long may it reign as my local.
I've been visiting this pub on and off for four or five years and it is a decent pub with a good mix of people and a nice garden, although the last couple of times it really felt like no one behind the bar was really that bothered - yacking, texting, reading out bits from magazines to each other etc and then handing over your beers with their fingers all over the rims of the glasses.
The best pub on our little pub crawl. By now I was very happy with life, even more so when I entered this gem. Excellent beers and service. It looks like a good menu and the sport was shown by plentiful screens.
A proper bub. Long may it reign as I'll definately be back.
This is still a proper pub - old fashioned in the best sense. Friendly staff and landlord and always well kept beer. I have no idea where the previous comment about "oxidised" beer comes from. The Salutation has some of the best beer in the area and the ESB is superior, attracting a steady stream of drinkers from other Fullers pubs where they just can't get it right. And please, no gastro-theming for this pub, you'd be spoiling a little gem.
Like most seemingly 'good' pubs with a nice location the Salutation seems to have decided the keeping of a decent real ale is optional. The Pride was oxidised (I am informed this is most likely old - seriously why do CAMRA prevent any measures to keep beer for more than 3 days? It is like a cult that is determined that their number does not get too large).
Anyway the Cask Marque whilst the best guide is flawed here. The beer is rarely more than adequate and often dreck.
CAMRA, Fuller's and Cask Marque have a lot to answer for with the beer at this pub.
Solid and reliable..good Fullers beers...manages not to be dominated by one particular customer group....excellent garden too an oasis in Hammersmith
Extremely well run and friendly pub with some great banter on a Saturday. Best pub in Hammersmith for footie fans.
Not bad at all. Friendly staff, reasonable Fullers beer, useful beer garden.
Before I stepped foot into this place I had visions of a dark and dank beer pit, but I was pleasantly surprised. A skylight illuminates the pub and the doors in the conservatory leading to the ample patio garden let the pub aerate. The adding of the conservatory also makes the pub much larger than one would assume from the front of the building.
The drinks on offer were ESB, Pride, HSB, Discovery and standard lagers. Ive read the raving reviews of this pub in the past so I decided to ditch the usual Lager tipple and plumped for a Discovery, which was very nice.
The staff were friendly and with the Sky TV I could imagine sitting in here a lot more if it was local to me.
Good pub, I have had many a pleasant afternoon here, good beer and a change from the usual garbage round here
Ah, the old weatherspoon argument. I am an advocate of the Salutation and firmly believe the quality of product is reflected in the price. Maybe Phillipher should ask to see the dates on the barrels in the cellar of the plough and harrow and compare to the Salutation. Weatherspoons are notorious for short dated beer which is reflected in the quality and the price.
3.25 for a Guinness, a pub that still closes at 11pm and they only thing they show is Sky Sports News all day and night.... what's the point of going in there? Where the Plough & Harrow is so much cheaper. Still at least they've got rid of some of the dim/thick/stupid/ignorant eastern European staff.
Decent Fuller's pub, and well worth the walk westwards along King Street away from hideous gyratory system that passes for Hammersmith's town centre. Can get very crowded and loud after work, but usually find somewhere a bit quieter at the back and away from the bar if you need to.
Went in there late Sat. afternoon. Big pub and obviously atuned to the locals with big TV screens showing sporting results also one or two punters in there reading papers who had the feel about them that they had just finished work. Nice relaxed atmosphere, good service, and good beer. I had two pints of London Pride that were in A1 condition. This boozer is also mentioned in the CAMRA London pub walks. If I were in this neck of the woods again, I would give it another visit.
Unfortunately I found myself once again in Hammersmith! However thank goodness for The Salutation, efficient, friendly, excellent fullers beer (Old Winter Ale - a must. Has the guvnor been there for ever? I last visited six months ago and he recognised me! Not sure if that says he's bloody good or that there is something unforgettable about me? Anyway, if in Hammersmith pop in and enjoy.
actually it was fairly empty when I dropped in there on a Friday lunchtime the other day. A pretty decent pub by any standards, and definitely the best in the immediate vicinity. Looks like it has retained a lot of its original character in the furnishings and fittings. The service was quick and friendly enough - but it was fairly empty. Food was good, although, as mentioned by a previous reviewer, it was expensive. The only (minor) fault for me was that the Pride was servied at about the right temperature for Discovery, but too cold for Pride. I don't think I would got far out of my way to visit again, but worth a visit if you are in the area.
The Salutation is an excellent pub, which has pretty much everything a pub should have to offer. It's got a traditional feel, the service is of top quality and the beer is very good. The food isn't particularly cheap but considering the quantity and quality the prices aren't extortionate. I add my hope to that of the previous commenter that this pub stays as it is, thankfully it's always seemed busy on my visits, particularly at lunch times, evenings and weekends, so logic, coupled with the fact that Fullers seem to be keener than most to keep their pubs 'proper' suggests it won't be changing.
We went in here for the first time last Thursday evening. Very hospitable caring landlord serving behind the bar dispensing very good pints of Fullers' Discovery served at a perfect temperature. Very pleasant atmosphere and lovely secluded garden with nicely arranged intimate seating sections with overhanging foliage. A delightful oasis in the otherwise rather tired pubs along King Street and thankfully Fullers (unlike Youngs now) have kept this pub traditional and not refurbished it into an overpriced pseudo gastro pub. We will definitely return.
what the hell planet is Miles007 on. if anything the tables are cleared too often. Go back to weatherspoons get your cheap but shit beer, clear your table yourself (because i had to) or else stop moaning, pay the bit extra and have a much better time.

Popped in the Sally on Sunday for lunch, excellent food, good value. Garden looking fantastic. Polite (not over friendly) but very efficient service. May be its a Polish thing. Then went over the Hope to see a drag show, absolutely fantastic! I even think I saw the guvnor from the Sally there. Two must pubs when in Hammersmith.
anonymous - 12 Jul 2007 15:44 |
Miles oo7: I agree with CB, my experiance of the Salutation are that the standards are very good and the beer is always top notch. Or were you just having a bad day.
anonymous - 11 Jul 2007 11:01 |
Miles007 - are you sure you have the right pub? Given my experiences of The Salutation, and seemingly everyone else's who has commented, it seems unlikely.
Andover Arms, that also is good. Though the anonymous contributor may either (i) have forgotten it, (ii) not know about it or (iii) think of it as being in Shepherds Bush (though I'd say it was Hammersmith).
anonymous - 7 Jul 2007 07:30 |
I walked in and thought 'what a dump' ! Filthy tables, overflowing ashtrays (before the ban) ESB tasted watery. Will never set foot in here again.
To the previous contributor, I would say - what about the Andover Arms ?
I agree with the last comments. There are only three decent traditional boozers in Hammersmith, The Hope and Anchor, The Dove and The Sally. Lets hope Fullers keep the Sally and the Dove as they are and not make them into a god damn awful gastro pub as seems to be there policy of late. Save the Hammersmith three!!
anonymous - 28 May 2007 09:19 |
Still the best pub in Hammersmith. Excellent selection of Fullers beers, ESB here is the best I have tasted. Friendly and efficient staff, never kept waiting to be served. Good venue to watch footie, although the guvnor supports Southampton!! Never mind, everything in this place cant be perfect!! Good value for money grub, on a nice day, a fantastc courtyard garden. When in Hammersmith, a MUST visit pub.
anonymous - 28 May 2007 08:40 |
Great place, completely different to my other favourite (Dove) but equally efficient staff, excellent beer and fantastic service. These places are undoubtedly the best run places to visit in west london.
anonymous - 17 May 2007 20:48 |
Decent boozer with a brilliant beer garden in the summer. Can be a bit smokey but otherwise wicked 'n that. There are some nobs from local recruitment companies who drink here and cause trouble but even they seem to have gone elsewhere now.
Great pub this, I went on Sunday afternoon and was very impressed. There was a good atmosphere and the pub had a traditional and homely feel. There's a big screen if you want to watch the football but if you just want a few quiet drinks there is also some seating beyond the screen, so it's easily avoided at the same time. Excellent and friendly service and the food was also good. Good selection of Fuller's ales. Highly recommended.
Don't use the right-hand side urinal in the Gents. The floor slopes.
An excellent pub. The beer is always high quality and the atmosphere pleasant. It's definitely the best pub in Hammersmith and maintains the feel of a traditional boozer. It has a big screen for the football and I've always found the service to be very good. Might be an idea to get there reasonably early if you intend to watch a big game and want a seat as it can get crowded. Despite all it's good points the music can be a bit suspect at times! Still, a top class pub.
I've been contracting with the council for a few months and this happens to be the local boozer. It might explain the mixed clientelle everyone's commenting on. Good choice of ales. Never had difficulty getting served. Haven't yet sampled the food.
I love the Salutation's exterior and always find it hard to pass. It very cosily says 'Pub', but anyway...
Great little place, if a little too local. Clientele generally older and gruffer than the rest of H'smith. When I last visited, an old, hairy, chainsmoking man was sitting in the same seat as he was a few weeks earlier and was even in the same clothes. I have good reason to believe that he never left. It... is... ok. 4.
Reasonable local boozer in Hammersmith, with large beer garden. Not much really else to add. I agree with the strange mix of clientele comment and I have had a couple of dodgy pints there. I wouldn't say this was a pub that you must visit, but if you're in Hammersmith its not a bad option.
How else are they going to get the beer into the pub? I'd hardly call the high street a residential area either...
I had the plesure of staying in hammersmith for a few days and went to many pubs including the salutation which was rather delightful and great food if you like everything deep fried. It toook rather a long time to get my drink as no one could speak engligh all that well, but I was in no hurry. My biggest complaint is that white on holiday and relaxing I was woken up by a delivery of loud men rolling kegs across the rahter large path to the front of the building. This I found very upsetting and shocked that this would be done in a residential area. I would hate to live here.
I went in here the other day and asked for half a pint of guiness and half a pint of stella in a yard glass - they wouldn't do it! grumble grumble
I like this place a lot, probably what I would call my second most regularly visited pub in west London. one thing though, why is it always so hot in there??!!
Great pub, good, friendly service, good beer, nice layout. The best pub in Hammersmith.
My problem with the Salutation might not be anything to do with the pub - it might just be Fuller's company policy. If so, I apologise to the Salutation. It's many years since I've been in a position to enjoy an evening in a Fullers pub. The problem with Fullers beers for me was that I was brought up on Greene King Abbot and later Young's Special, so I prefer my beers to be around 4.8% ABV (this was before the strengths of both beers was changed). London Pride at 4.1% is what I'd call a 'lunchtime beer' - a bit too weak for evening drinking. ESB on the other hand, is a bit too strong at 5.5%. Then I discovered the wonderful drink called 'Mixed' - half a pint of ESB and half a pint of London Pride in the same glass. Not only do the two beers blend together wonderfully, but it's just the right strength for me, too. So I was suprised when the barmaid didn't understand what I wanted, and was then told by a man (the manager?) (in a rather gruff manner, I thought) that they don't do mixed, because I'd been looking forward to a few. Oh well, so it had to be ESB after all. Now I've been drinking pints of beer for nearly 40 years. My hand has got used to a straight pint glass and I don't expect my beer to come in what can only be described as an oversized wine goblet - even if it does hold a pint and has got ESB on the side. It's not comfortable to hold and I don't know where I am or how much I've drunk with a goblet. I suppose 2-70 a pint is typical London prices for beer of that strength, but I don't enjoy my beer when it's that sort of price, even though it was an excellent pint of ESB. What a shame. After one pint I deserted the Salutation in favour of the Plough & Harrow up the road, where my excellent pints of St Austell HSD were served in a nice straight glass and were only 1-79 as well.
This pub is a bit of a gem for Hammersmith (or at least King Street). I have been here a few times and never really been disappointed. The beer garden out the back is sensational in summer, but the things that generally make the experience worthwhile are the friendly staff and good service. I recommend the curly fries - I have never seen a bowl so big. Provides a decent venue to watch the football, but as mentioned below, sometimes the reception can be erratic.
Hammersmith is a bit of a black hole for pubs, but this is a top class one. Fullers have done a good job of keeping an old pub in it's original ornate style. I wouldn't choose to have a night out in Hammersmith, but if you are in the area for some reason, this pub is definitely worth a visit.
TheGP - 16 Jun 2006 10:35 |
I can only echo what's been said below. The Salutation is a great pub with friendly bar staff and service to match. It has a very nice and well kept garden out of the back of the pub which is ideal for the summer, though this does close at 10:30 at nights. It's also worth mentioning the food, which is superior to standard pub fare!
I had a lovely time here last night after a poor meal at the Dove. It more than made up for the poor service we had received at the Dove, and we weren't surprised to see the staff sneak in here for a quick drink after their lunch rush!
I've been here a few times now and have not one bad word to say about the place, it's a brilliant pub and the beers and staff are excellent. Good mix of people in there in the evenings which makes for a great atmosphere, during the days it's quite quiet making it an ideal place for a relaxing afternoon pint. The garden is superb too.
Great big pub, with a fine choice of beers, as well as all the spirits you might require for finishing off the night. It's a Fuller's pub, which is always a bonus. It's a great place to go drinking with mates - very spacious, and comfortable sofas to sit on. The staff are friendly as well. I come here sometimes with my Dad and brother to watch the football too, and they've got a few screens, including one big one (though their reception of Sky can get interrupted by bad weather) - but it seems to lack a bit of atmosphere, and you don't get the banter or tension that you might hope for during a big game, but that might be a reflection more of the local clientelle than the pub itself.

Great pub with a lot of charm. Traditional seating area towards the front with a more relaxed area with a couple of sofas at the back leading into a very nice looking beer garden. The regulars and staff are friendly too.

average beer and a nice looking peaceful pub to socalise with friends

A nice pub with an impressive garden area which you wouldn't expect from looking at it from the outside. Good service and a big screen for the football too.

Has a strange mix of clientele but not a bad pub if you get it on the right night. The range of drinks are exactly what you would expect from a Fullers House, and alot better than some of the oter pubs up towards Hammersmith Broadway.

Nice pub.saw the England v Wales game there and stood by alot of gob-shites(50 year old men who think they are 15!).Beer garden is good though.

Went on a Friday night, music was too loud for me, who needs music in a pub anyway, lets have a conversation for Christs sake. Fullers pub, fullers beer, but not fullers atmosphere. Tick it off the list, move on to Cross Keys

Popped in here for a quick lunchtime pint when I was passing through and was pretty impressed. Decent pint and the food looked good although I myself didn't actually eat. Would certainly head back to this pub if I ever find myself in Hammersmith again. Which hopefully I won't.

A lovely bar, though a tad expensive.Great service from the very jolly barmaid made this a memorable visit.I shall go back.

Used to be a thriving pub back in the 90's when it had two bars. Since opening into one bar has lost some of it's appeal to some locals, though, can't knock the beer or the food (excellent). A major plus for this pub is it's fantastic beer garden, which is packed during the summer. Unusual to see a high street pub with such a great feature!!

Outside of the pub is classic olde style pub, as it should be.
Inside, the decor is not too bad and the beer is decent. Downsides are the piped crappy music (install a jukebox for gods sake) and a particular problem is the dossers coming in and hassling customers for change and fags. Although that is more of a problem with the dodgy Hammersmith area than this pub.
At least this is a proper pub, rather than the abomination of chain hell that you get down the rest of the high street.

probably now the best pub on the High Street. Lovely exterior. ( PS - does anyone else remember what this pub was like in the late 70's ? A bit like going to Millwall or Newcastle as an away supporter. Absolutely dire !)

the outside of the pub looks fantastic. the inside is a strange mix of spit and sawdust to nice restaurant area and big patio/garden. good for watching footie. but yep, the barmaid is none to jolly.

Great pub just opposite the town hall in Hammersmith. Helpful friendly staff, and a pleasant Garden out the back. Recommended.

Airy pub retaining some of its original features (tiling, fireplace), usefully situated on King Street. Garden out the back. Small range of real ales.
