The only reason to come is to visit a pub not on dry land. Otherwise, as mediocre as one would expect although that is slightly better than poor I guess. John Smith's Smooth is the only 'ale' on tap while football (the Manchester derby) was on the big screen. Transient indeed - although hard not to expect that given that the pier has no permanent population.

I didn't expect much and I wasn't disappointed. The beer was awful. Still the location is nice and you take it as you find it.

Very lively in here last night,as one expects. End of pier bar, meeting place. Much better places to go ,but serves a purpose..

Visited September 2011 Saturday Lunchtime
It is what it is, a pier bar catering for the many numbers, and different clientele, that drop in. We were lucky, a lovely hot day so we say outside and watched the fun go by courtesy of people watching. You don't have to write comedy, it's there in front of you at a place like Horatios. 6/10

First pub I ever went in where all the customers appeared to be related and/or married to their sisters.
I was there Sunday and despite the above, it was great fun. The weather was pretty filthy so the pier was a great place to be especially inside. Me and my mate Levi got hammered on 1664 and watched the world pass us by before getting a good feed of chips on the way out. First rate - I commend it to you all.

Considering it's location, not at all that bad. Prompt service and tables regularly cleared. Plenty of seating inside and out. Allows groups of more than 5 to sit together which is more than could be said for lots of others places nearby.
As a real ale drinker it was disappointing but I visited on one of the hottest days of the year and a cold lager was just what I needed.

Closed on a thursday afternoon.

Good place to watch Hen Parties getting lagered up before they hit the town. I really wanted to hate this place, but hey, its a bar on a pier and a good place to sit in the sun not doing very much.

Oi careful sunshine I was that chubby geezer...

The kareoke section is back in a new guise which is welcoming...
However, having been there a couple of times in the last week, two points have stuck out :- The service is poor. The staff have no idea who has been waiting the longest. One chubby geezer was standing next to me, eager to get back to his football match, flashing a tenner, wanting to get served next at no expense. Surprise surprise the staff served him before me and a mate, who had been waiting longer. Dispictable... And when you do get served, the beer was very flat. I asked for a change, which I got, and this was flat as well.
Good atmosphere in the right group but unless they sort out their liquer this place is getting less welcoming...

spent my 40th in the sun brinkng ice cold beer with great company made to feel very welcome doorstaff in the day time spot on and the evening not so on the ball had a sing on the kareoke a pure retro time had by all recomend it strongly

Nice place to sit outside in the sun and people watch. Typical large "End of Pier" show type Bar serving Every DAy pressure beers and Lagers. Have not stayed all night but used it as part of a Crawl when visiting for the day. Nice place to sit and watch the kids spend your money on the Funfair Rides!!!!

This is the funniest bar in the world! Staff are always helpful and pretty friendly and drinks are ok if a bit dear. The very best part is some of the customers who go there - like kicking out time at a victorian freak show. Go there!

Karaoke's back on a Friday and it's had a lot to drink.
Go and sit outside if it's sunny.

The kareoke section has now gone, which is a shame as this was a nice and suitable gimmick to draw in the crowd
The bar as it now stands isn't bad, common stuff. Beer on the Pier, a novelty which will give this place regards above most standrad places. It feels scenic as well, but admittedly even that isnt great. They could have a bit of live music to dust it off, and a few more selection on tap. Other than that enjoy it, though bit bland for more than a drop by visit..
|
In prime position obviously in terms of geography so seems to assume that very little effort need to be made in any other way. You could name every beer it had on tap without even going there (standard cast list). Lowest common denominator.
The town has so much more to offer but then there's the nagging thought if you jump on a train down from London... you've got to have a beer on the pier haven't you?

Was last here in 2004 & was astounded to see the bar staff, mostly East European, wearing name badges that stated their country of origin. Shame on the management are you nazis or what? Its overpriced, I bet the bar staffs wages aren't replective of this, and like everthing on the Palace Pier it's f****** crap to boot.

At least there are no frills here: what you see is what you get! If you just want the experience of drinking above the waves, the best time to visit Horatios is early- or mid-afternoon. On a sunny day it can be quite wonderful. (I have still have very fond memories of my first visit here in 1990.) Any other time, you get caught up in flashy, trashy karaoke/stag/hen debauchery. My only real gripe is that a bouncer once ejected me and 3 friends because we were "too old". In 1993!! Oh well, it was a students' night, but he let us buy one round then threw us out before the second. I still fume about this. Never mind.
|
If you are on a stag do in Brighton, please DO go here, as you're saving the rest of town from your debauchery (which is far less original and shocking than you might imagine at the time).
Having said all that, I was her on a stag do myself some months back, and enjoyed (with a frisson of terror) the whole experience. A bit wild west, but brilliant as a Stag sump.
|
all other comments are sooo true! as Im brighton born and bred, i havent been here since i was about 13 until last weekend when, you guessed it, london friends came down. if you're in brighton for a short time, please dont go here, the town has so much more to offer!

Its not brilliant, and gets a bit too lively with drunken geezers on stag nights,be careful. that said, its tradition, you go to brighton, you gotta go have a pint in Horatios.
Mad Karoake.
