This pub used to be run by my relatives in the Truman's days so I have found memories of the place. It has changed considerably and not necessarily for the better. However, I found the beer range to be good - I had the Landlord which was in very good condition. The staff were friendly and efficient and the food was good. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again but overall a reasonable pub for the area.

Dropped in here when passing on Friday afternoon. It had a nice and relaxed atmosphere, was clean and open and had a pool table. They had a good range of ales and I had a well kept pint of Butcombe Bitter

A nice friendly pub. Nice food, and a good range of drinks. Slightly pricey, but acceptable for the area. The barstaff are friendly, and there is a pool table and TV screens. I would certainly suggest visiting, especially a weekday evening, although it can get slighlty busy at times. Certainly the best pub in the Grays Inn Road area, and well worth a visit!

Since it changed hands, this pub has been completely transformed. Friendly warm atmosphere, welcoming owner, great selection of drinks, and a well thought out menu, with good quality ingredients. Now one of the area's highlights. Can be manic on a Friday night, but service doesn't slip. Closed at weekends which is a shame, as there's a lack of good Sunday lunch pubs in the area.

As previously mentioned, this is a big pub with a large island bar and a pool table and plasma screen can be found at the rear. Greene King IPA and Ruddles were both available on my visit along with a standard and premium draught selection. I found the barmaid to be very friendly and my Guinness was very good.
This is the sort of place I would go with a group of mates for a night out rather than a quiet pint on my jacks.

Busty Goth barmaid appreciates your love, thebigman.

This more like a bar than a pub - on walking in you find that room is dominated by a large central bar. This however opens out behind the bar to a fairly large rear area with a plasma screen and pool table. I chose to sit in the high booths on the left hand side of the bar. This turned out to be a mistake as the upholstered seats had no foot rail and were too high to rest my feet on the ground (I'm 5' 11" so no shorty). This left me in the uncomfortable position of having my legs dangling like a 5 yr old on the Tube.
The menu here looked pretty good and the beer was ok but there are better places to visit in the vicinity.

I'm in love with the Busty Goth Barmaid.

Good pub but felt the staff could be bit more attentive, When i ordered a pint of IPA the glass must have come straight out of the dishwasher as was boiling hot. They changed it straight away - no questions asked.
When i went to the bar to get a second round my friends lager had run out, the girl said she would get the barrel changed, as soon as she served the next customer, instructing me to take a seat - 5 mins past and my friend is without his choice, infortunatley the lass had got to involved with serving she forgot about us.....
Good food menu, and some querky decorating, most prob a good after work pub due to the business around the area....

This is a great environment for a proper catch up with friends. You can book ahead to reserve one of their tables, they have some nice wooden/leather booths which sits about four. As a previous reviewer said the music is good but it's not overpoweringly loud so you can still hold a conversation over it. The menu has a wide range of options for vegetarians and meat lovers, and the quality was good. When I went they also managed to cater off-menu for my vegan friend. Now you don't find many pubs that do that willingly!

At first I thought this was going to be one of those pub to bar conversions that rip out the character and replace it with pretentiousness. However its not, theres clearly been a bit of money spent and its been spent well. Its now a clean, attractive pub with comfortable seating, i.e. they havent rushed headlong for the sofa and low table concept and have some high tables with stools for drinkers. In fact none of the seating is laid out for food so the overall impression is of a pub rather than a bar. There are a few hand pumps and you can usually find something outside of the standard offering. Good place to stop off for a beer.

Very friendly staff and great environment . The lightening and the music sets the stage just right for that favourite drink. I highly recommend this pub to anyone.

This pub has now changed hands and is now definitely worth a look - it's no longer got that 'chain pub' feel - the decor's a bit quirky like someone's made an effort and thought about things. The TVs have gone but there's a pool table which is a bonus. The staff, food and beer are all pretty good. There was a real fire alight when I visited and some great tunes playing. The photo's out of date too.

This pub can get very busy at lunch time and when you get your food it is normally cold, and also the manager can be quite rude, but okay for a quick drink after work.

Doesn't have a pool table anymore.

This pub has a lot going for it. Now ITV is just across the road - and the ITV news channel is closing down. That means lots of beautiful birds - i.e. newsreaders and researchers - drowning their sorrows and looking for a bit of entertainment. Know what I mean. Still worried about the food and bar staff that can't speak proper English like wot you can?

Didn't like it before the refurbishment. Not over-keen on it now, even though it's very different.
The food's not bad. The beer's alright. The space taken up by the bar is about the same as that required for a Routemaster bus. It's a bit cluttered generally as well. Makes navigating the pub a little difficult. In particular 'cos it's so dark.
|
Another once great pub that shut for refurbishment...and that was the death knell. As the size of the windows increaced, the area behind the bar followed suit. 5 years ago, if you'd have told me i'd be fiddling with wax in the blue lion, i'd have known it was coming from my ears, and not from a wine bottle used as lighting for 'effect'. Like another well known establishment with wax, Madame tussauds, there is about as much life in this place. Full of people, but its just BORING. Bar staff are terrible and they don't have magners......cardinal sin.
|
They seem to enjoy employing people who can't really speak english. You ask for a lager you get half a coke. You ask for a burger with chilli you get nachos. It's alright, but not great.
|
Hmmmm, never REALLY had a bad night in this place.
Food is average and the staff are pretty sh*te. No I take that back, the staff are rubbish! And why do they have so much room behind the bar? The place gets PACKED on a Friday night and you can't move whereas behind the bar the staff have enough room to do the ruddy conga!!! SORT IT OUT then I may just like you a bit more.
|
An old favourite of mine, but the staff are appallingly slow, and seem to revel in getting slower the busier the place gets - and it can get very busy, especially on Thursday and Friday evenings when the local office workers turn up. Does have one advantage - a 1am licence at the back end of the week should ensure you've somewhere to go when you get a second (or third) wind...
