An American style brewpub on several levels. Many people have hailed it as a beacon of decent ale in Ireland. The beer (Plain Porter) was certainly very good, although the Oyster Stout had a strange gingery taste. I had a burger, which was very overdone. However, the worse thing about the place was the service. There weren't enough servers and they were badly organised. And the music was very loud.To sum up offers American style ambience, but without American efficiency. I hate to think what must be like in the height of the tourist season.

Had the TSB - it was good ale - are all those other beers they brew real ale?

These Porterhouse really are a godsend for ale lovers - keep up the good work.

Deliberately went to find this pub as someone had told me it's the only real ale pub in Dublin. There were a few porters and stouts on and a beautiful pale ale I drank called Galway Hooker. It was the pub's birthday, so it was full of balloons, which was the only downside for me coz I hate 'em. Apart from that, it's a nice pub on lots of levels and the beer was great too.

For the beer-lover, the one must-visit pub in Dublin (in fact, the whole of Ireland). TSB might not be the best real ale going, but in a country with a (wholly undeserved) reputation for beer this is almost the only place where you are (almost) guaranteed a decent pint. In addition to their own brews, I was pleased to see that they had the Galway Hooker (somewhere between a pale ale and a lager) on draught. I'll accept that this might not be the best pub in Ireland, but you'll not get better beer anywhere else.

It's quite something, this place. Not far from Leinster House and the Liffey, it is a cask ale oasis in a keg desert. Visiting some years ago, I asked the landlord if he had many people asking for a certain Dublin-brewed stout. He said "they" - the large rival along the quays - had offered to supply them when they opened but that "we" had declined. It's a multi-level place with a decent bottled range as well as a draught selection. The food's excellent too and the place is kept spotless. A very impressive pub and well worth a visit.

The only place I found in Dublin that did a cask ale. The pints of it I had weren't too bad. The other range of home brews (not cask conditioned, served dead and chilled from an electric pump) were nice, but if you're used to drinking real ale all the time they just don't seem satisfying enough. The layout of the pub is very unusual. I think there were three floors plus a basement, with staircases here there and everywhere, a bit like Hogwarts!

Unlike its London cousin (in Covent Garden) I have to give this one a 7. This is simply because it was the only pub I went into in the whole of fecking Dublin that had cask ale.

A pleasant alternative to nitro-kegged Guinness or US lagers.

The best pub that I've come across in Ireland. A pub on many levels that serves food, has live music and serves great beer... one of the few places that offers anything different from the norm. Three stouts, three ales and three lager/pils available from the microbrewery. Also has a host of other beers from around the world.

I had a great time in this wonderful country but something was missing in my life. I walked into this magnificent pub and there it was - in the middle of the bar - a handpull. The TSB was worth waiting for, as were the other beers that I tried, the strawberry beer was a tad strange though.

Very popular bar on the edge of Temple Bar. The Oyster Stout was in great condition but the Porterhouse Red was absolutely sublime. This is an absolute must place to visit everytime I visit Dublin.

The atmosphere is always very good but if you want to find a seat I would certainly advise arriving early.

FECKIN RYANAIR!!!! As a result of a flight being late and a bus being missed I was "forced" to have 3 swift pts of Plain here last Thursday night before a through-the-night bus journey. (Pressure was encountered somewhere down in Co Kilkenny and the wheel of the bus had to be watered, thanks driver!!!)

The pints were excellent as usual,4.90 each, not bad at the midnight hour. Usual good service, especially no quibble from the doormen despite big touristy bags being hauled.

Hello to manager bloke,I remember when ya were starting off here, well done on your elevation!!!!!!

Still the best pub in Ireland.

Made a throughly enjoyable on Monday to by far the best pub in Dublin. The Plain Porter is exactly what Guinness should be, smooth, deep, flavourful without tasting of metal and gas. The TSB is an interesting interpretation of a light bitter, not perfect but pretty good. The pub exudes atmosphere, something helped by the cheerful staff. In short, superb.

Oyster stout was so good today I had to have 3 of them. And a Plain and a Wrasslers. Nice Hungarian girl behind the bar. Was sorry to have to leave. Best pub in Dublin,if not in Ireland by a country mile. Forget about Guinness, come here and be enlightened!!!

Been visiting here since not long after it opened (1996?),regularly at first(my girlf was in college in Dublin),but alas now only about a couple of times a year since I moved to old blighty. A must on a visit to Dublin, far detatched from the touristy rip-off plastic fiddle-dee-dee-my-arse Temple Bar. Have always had a great welcome from the staff over the years-little Frank,Damien,Angus and the cute little English girl(Gemma?)-would spring to mind from the past. The owner can often be seen quaffing a pint with the mere mortals. The old bloke at the bar with the Gandalf beard is always great for a pint and a chat. Gets packed but never uncivilised. Beer(although all "keg") has never left me with any cause for complaint.(Are you brave enough for a PINT of Branblasta?) MILES better than its Covent Garden sister. And yes the price of beer here went DOWN last year-the Irish treasury reduced the duty on microbrewed beer,GORDON BROWN TAKE NOTE............................

Bless me father,I have definitely sinned!! I questioned the quality of the beers here last time. This time they were gorgeous.I had the plain porter(excellent) and got my mate to 'test' the wrasslers...WOW! what a revelation, top notch pint- followed by a few qually good ones.Accompanied by top music -yet again! The guy was playing Roses tracks in his own style....Apologies to the couple for eating all their Pringles(def looked like you'd gone home!)
-don't miss this pub on a vis

Superb Porterhouse beers and very good food. Great bar and always a warm friendly atmosphere.

One of the best pubs in the Temple Bar area. Great selection of beers from all over the world, plus they brew nine beers of their own (my favourite is the Oyster Stout - makes a pleasant change from Guinness). Like the Covent Garden branch, this is a place to come for a relaxing few drinks or perhaps some food during the day, and at night gets absolutely packed. Preferred it to the London one though, apart from anything else it is open later!

Visited during the 'Oktoberfest', loads of top quality draft beers, also huge selection of bottled beers from all over the world. I never thought I'd get Andechs on draught in Dublin, fantastic. Landlord Aidan really enthusiastic, and keen for me to try a few, including his own Kolsch. This is a must for anyone visiting the city centre.
YoungsSpecialOne - 12 Oct 2006 22:47
If you've been to the Covent Garden branch-you'll know what to expect, ups downs wood copper, bottles and plenty of variety in the beer. The plain porter I had, didn't hit the extremely high standard of Covent Garden.Though I must say that the quality of the live music has always been outstanding,no matter which group I've seen here.Well worth a look.

A great spot in the middle of touristy Dublin and my first port of call upon arrival, without fail. There's a great selection of beers, as the name would suggest. Their own beers are very reasonably priced, due to some government wrangling over microbreweries. I recommend Porterhouse Red or An Brain Blasta (7%, beware!), but they're all fairly quaffable. The food's outstanding, but a tad pricey. Decent music to be had at varying times. The pub's built on a few levels, so it can feel like a multi-storey maze after a few pints, and if you smoke, sit downstairs - it's a long journey from the top level to get outside, especially if it's busy, which it generally is. The decor is great, lots of wood, complemented by shelves upon shelves of bottled beers, everything you can think of and more that you can't. The staff, as is typical in Dublin, are a mutlinational bunch, and a more pleasant staff you will not find in that city, very friendly and accomodating. The only criticism I have is that the downstairs toilets are sometimes a bit sloppy, could do with having an eye kept on them. Apart from that I can't fault the place, I've never had a bad time there. Great for nursing those Sunday afternoon hangovers.

For real beer lovers this is the place to be when in Dublin. I tried this, the Nassau St and the Bray varieties of the brewing company and found them all as good. Tried every beer and porter over the weekend and not one bad one. Friendly and efficient staff - great!

Don't mess with the Porter Just go straight for a pint of red and a burger. My favourite pub in Dublin

Used to be full of Stag parties over from Britain but they've got a fair bit stricter on the door. Selection of beer is unbelievable, the live music is topclass too
smashey - 19 May 2005 21:32
Great bar for drawing elephants on the menus and good beer too

Great, marvellous, brilliant selection of beer. Stupid big burgers too.
Nige - 18 May 2004 08:46
Nice pub, nice beer, ridiculously sized burgers....shame the air con didn't seem to be working despite the staff's contrary insistence!
Paul - 17 May 2004 16:06
