Just popped in here after regular weekend walk in the Chilterns.
4 pumps but stuck with the Side Pocket which was perfect.
Sat in the cosy snug by the fire gorging on the superb free roasties - sorry guys, we polished off the lot, but nobody else was indulging (presumably already full up) and they were just too good to waste!
Staff and locals incredibly friendly and the two resident Black Labs are impossible to ignore.
Like the previous poster I wish this was my local. I would be in every night of the week.
Maximum points, take a bow folks

What a find! This pub has that relaxed cosy feeling that you only get in pubs that are centuries old. The 4 real ales available were all excellent. I tried them all (half pints of course). Aparently it is a runner up in the local CAMRA pub-of-the-year competition. Yet despite all this olde worlde charm, they were awarded five stars by the Environmental Health people (I didn't even know it went up to 5, I've only seen 3 proudly displayed before). I wish this pub was nearer to home but I will definitely be back just to check that the beers are always that good (and I'll remember not to eat beforehand next time because the food looked wonderful).

I was pleasantly surprised at my last visit to this pub which has been a bit up and down over the years. Food was good and not that expensive whilst the range of ales has been expanded dramatically without any loss of quality. The staff were universally friendly and all in all, a worthwhile evening out.

Been to the pub a few times, both before and after the new owners took over. Always a warm friendly atmosphere, lovely if you just want a drink (with no added pressure or awkwardness to buy more) and really lovely if you fancy a nice meal out. Would suit couples or families- and very dog friendly. The toilets (ladies) were clean and well stocked with toilet roll and paper towels. The service was a little slow - but they were short on staff and it was late, however the chap serving was attentive and very helpful with menu choices. A big thumbs up in my book, and will definately be back!!

Prices have dropped a little since this pub changed hands in August, but the ales are better than ever (punch having finally put in a new cellar cooler). There is still some seating in the garden and the food that I have tried has been excellent. The place is kept scrupulously clean and seems a bit more roomy since the furniture has been re-arranged. I hope the present incumbents will stay for a long time. Cheers!

To give the place a fair chance I popped in again, in the last couple of days. Im afraid that will be my last visit. The Beer was not up to standards still. I had a good close look around with reference to cleanliness. Its still no better. The tables and Bar are sticky and there is the famous kitchen cloth being used for just about everything. Lovley!!!

Ignore comment from husknet as it is misleading - note how they have only reviewed one pub !
Visited early on a Friday evening after hearing the Pub has changed hands and heard good things about the new management from locals. 4 Casks of which one of the guests I tried was in Very good condition. In terms of selection and quality one of the best I have tried in Chesham area. Friendly staff and management.
Whilst I did not try the food, the menu looked more reasonable than when I previously visited.
Inglenook fireplace for the winter and large garden for the summer. Only issue for me is having to drive to get there but will look forward to a Sunday walk in the winter with the promise of a well kept and interesting pint.

This pub has changed hands in the last month or two, and my goodness it has gone down hill. Its has a cold, unwelcome fealing. Beer is well priced, but is reflected in that. Poor quality. You would do better from a Cost Cutter, or Supermarkets own brand. Its a real shame another pub has gone down hill so quickly. Its not very clean, smells, there is no outside seating any more. What a Shame!!!

Nice old fashioned pub, most customers over-50 and eating; Adnams was pretty good but beer and food prices very high.

I was lucky enough to stumble across this little gem when out on a dog walk. When entering the pub, the first thing that I really like was the feel of a warm traditional Inn. Not youre typical ruined Gastro Pub. I had a pint of Guiness which was a very good Pint, nice and crisp, and it was nice to see someone who new how to poor a pint correctly Giving it time to settle, and be presented nicely without is poring all over the side of the glass. I was made to feel very welcome by the staff, with my dog being treated by what I have been told is the famous Dog Treat Pot. I decided to explore a little more, and was made aware that pub had a large garden at the rear. On opening the door, I got a WOW factor. There is around an Acre, poss and Acre and a Half, of very tidy, well kept garden. Fully fenced off, should you have children or dogs. As the weather was nice, I treated myself to a meal, choosing a roast. Food was served quickly, very good portions, and as for the meat, it was tender; nice crisp roast spuds, served with a generous portion of veg in a side bowl. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. They have a good selection of Coffees etc for after. I have been back to this pub frequently and every time greeted with a warm welcome, good pint and very friendly locals.

Tried it for lunch today. Very middle-aged and middle class, but since that description applies to me too, I don't mind. The beer available was 6X, Adnams Bitter and Old Speckled Hen. The food is a bit pricey, though not extravagantly so. And no piped music (and no loudspeakers for it, either).

It has become very expensive, eg soup 5.25 and the ham and eggs price is ridiculous. Meanwhile fish and chips is about 12.00 with a miserly piece of steak at about 14.00. As for drinks, a pint of lager was3.75
I had chicken pie, modest in size, that was delivered with the pastry smothered in dark gravy. By contract the vegitables were bland but excessive in quantity.
We were a party of 8 and paid 212 for our evening out comprisng 7 starters,8 main courses and 4 deserts. Everyone had 2 drinks.
If my wife and I had gone there alone and studied the menu we would have left hastily for another venue.
This is not the the pub of old and we shant be going there again.

The rating does not do this pub justice. 4 real ales on all in good condition, a landlord who knows his beer, a restaurant doing very good food, plenty of character and overall an excellent country pub. No, I am not the landlord, just an irregular visitor

Amazed to read any negative comments about this cracking pub. I've been there 3 times in the last month, was unfortunate enough to visit when the current publicans were not there, when it had gone downhill quite chronically. These day however it is back in its pomp - really friendly welcome, hot, fresh food, lovely pint in a lovely bar. Top class!!!

Went there after visiting the still excellent Rose and Crown at Hawridge. Distinctly unimpressed, average pint of 6X which with a coke in a small wine glass came to a staggering 5.30!! Definite lack of atmosphere. We didn't eat there but the food looked average, and a lot of dishes were bulked up with salad. Surprised this is in the CAMRA beer guide as it's definitely a pub that puts more emphasis on food, plus the beer selection is very uninspiring, 6X and Greede King. Won't be going back again.

Decent pub. On the night I went, drinkers were outnumbered by diners, although the food and ale were both pretty good. Beer choice is a little staid if well kept.

This pub is now back to being an excellent, comfortable place to relax. All the locals are pleased to see Mick and Jan back running it. The beer is always in excellent condition, and the food is good and varied. It is not the sort of place where you can feel lonely or excluded. Mick and Jan returned just before Christmas (2006) so if you have visited it before that, try it again, you will be amazed and delighted by the improvement.

I wrote a review for this pub back in april 2006 and I am delighted to say I take back everything I said about the Black Horse. I was persuaded to return as the previous owners had returned and the pub was back to its old glory. I am so pleased I did give it another try, had a great experience and the food and drink were all excellent. The owners are so friendly and couldnt make you feel anymore at home than they did. I would advise everyone to give this pub a go.

The Black Horse is now back in the hands of Mick & Janet who ran it successfully for many years. They left 15 months ago, not by choice, and are pleased to be back. The pub is back to it's old self with the stools at the bar, the restaurant area looking welcoming and the fire blazing away. I would say to the previous people who commented to give it another try as I was so pleased to see the place back to it's old self.

we went to try somewhere different for a change.. should not have bothered. Prices are very high for the standard , quite a few other people just drank up and left while we were there. We found them in another pub in Chesham 20 mins later when left also. Sad , as this is a nice setting.
