Just popped in here after regular weekend walk in the Chilterns. 4 pumps but stuck with the Side Pocket which was perfect. Sat in the cosy snug by the fire gorging on the superb free roasties - sorry guys, we polished off the lot, but nobody else was indulging (presumably already full up) and they were just too good to waste! Staff and locals incredibly friendly and the two resident Black Labs are impossible to ignore. Like the previous poster I wish this was my local. I would be in every night of the week. Maximum points, take a bow folks HarryHawthorn - 8 Dec 2013 19:29 |
What a find! This pub has that relaxed cosy feeling that you only get in pubs that are centuries old. The 4 real ales available were all excellent. I tried them all (half pints of course). Aparently it is a runner up in the local CAMRA pub-of-the-year competition. Yet despite all this olde worlde charm, they were awarded five stars by the Environmental Health people (I didn't even know it went up to 5, I've only seen 3 proudly displayed before). I wish this pub was nearer to home but I will definitely be back just to check that the beers are always that good (and I'll remember not to eat beforehand next time because the food looked wonderful). I was pleasantly surprised at my last visit to this pub which has been a bit up and down over the years. Food was good and not that expensive whilst the range of ales has been expanded dramatically without any loss of quality. The staff were universally friendly and all in all, a worthwhile evening out. Been to the pub a few times, both before and after the new owners took over. Always a warm friendly atmosphere, lovely if you just want a drink (with no added pressure or awkwardness to buy more) and really lovely if you fancy a nice meal out. Would suit couples or families- and very dog friendly. The toilets (ladies) were clean and well stocked with toilet roll and paper towels. The service was a little slow - but they were short on staff and it was late, however the chap serving was attentive and very helpful with menu choices. A big thumbs up in my book, and will definately be back!! bumblebiz60 - 6 Oct 2011 13:43 |
Prices have dropped a little since this pub changed hands in August, but the ales are better than ever (punch having finally put in a new cellar cooler). There is still some seating in the garden and the food that I have tried has been excellent. The place is kept scrupulously clean and seems a bit more roomy since the furniture has been re-arranged. I hope the present incumbents will stay for a long time. Cheers! NHTH - 5 Oct 2011 20:02 |
