First call of the day, it's across the road from Willington station, but the service is infrequent. Nicely refurbished with 6 ales on and a good lunchtime trade for food.

It's me again for an update on this pub. After 3 sets of managers, a couple who ran the place after its refurb have bit the bullet and signed a lease. I wasn't keen on them before but now they have a stake in the place rather than just a wage, a total change is under way. Landlady's 2 sons run the bar ( Harvest Pale, Pedi, Bass, Doombar, Courage Bitter-rare in these parts and 1 other changing, Black Sheep bitter at mo.Wye Valley Butty Bach next). Stone baked pizza's are superb, Food offers most weeknights, Pizza-night, homemade pie-night etc. Quiz night Wednesday £1 a person each team get a 14'' Pizza of their choice. Everybody very friendly and the busiest it's been for years. They've not paid me for this ad, I just like the place a lot again!

I was the last to review this place a while back. It was extensively and expensively rebooted with the bar and lounge swapped over and was ok for a time but the new licensees were not a friendly bunch, tried to make it too foody and drove away the local drinkers. They got the chop after less than a year. New guy Pete and his chef Dean totally different kettle, welcoming to drinkers and eaters, the lost locals have drifted back and it now feels homely again. Good quiz on a Wednesday with excellent food for a quid entry as well! Beers on Pedi, Bass, Doombar, Bombdr, Castlerock Harvest Pale, Landld etc a fair selection. I am back to popping in regularly for the first time in years.

I really don't know what is happening to this place, once the best pub in this village. The new licensees are miserable and don't seem interested in making the pub homely and it's looking tatty and unkempt. Most of the long term bar maids have left, and I have rarely seen the new bloke working apart from doing a quiz on Wedneday. The Dragon beats it hands down for beer qulity at the moment and I've seen many 'Man diehards' drinking in the other 2 village pubs for the first time, and I have gone from a 2 or 3 times a week visitor to 2 or 3 times a month now.Badly needs the rumoured refurb quickly and probably another landlord.Sorry.

George65 - please visit the gents in the lounge area and you will see what I mean - they are awful.
Yes looks aren't everything but my opinion is my own - so who in the blue hell are you to judge me sir?
BTW I'm a local and regular drinker in the Man.
The Man is a cracking pub but needs money spending on it - what a traditional village pub that is in great nick? Go to the Hollybush @ Church Broughton.

Well, this is a traditional village pub! The beer was excellent and credit to the person responsible for mantaining the pipes etc. Bar staff attentive and knowledgable about the beers. Ordered from the specials board and can't fault the portion size/ value for money. Food arrived hot and well presented. Re the previous comment, yes the decor is in need of updating if you compare it to another pub in the village but looks aren't everything! I found the toilets very clean and wonder if the previous comment was made after the Village Raft Race Day when the pub has it's busiest day of the year?! Would I recommend this pub? YES The beer garden is small but family friendly with a small slide/ climbing frame but more important it's enclosed so no worry of the little people running off. My preferred pub in the village and will be returning.

The food has improved immencely in recent months and is generous and great value for money.
The beer is usually Pedi, Bass, Cumberlund and a guest ale. Old Rosie from the barrel is also available.
Generally friendly but is in dire need of a refurb especially in the toilets. With the Dragon reopened, this is being given a run for its money as the best pub in Willington.
Beer and food are good but the shabby decor and filthy toilets aren't.

Spent enjoyable evening eating and drinking before taking canal boat back to the Mercia Marina, closeby. Reasonably priced food, and large portions, especially if you order a side order of chips !!

A fairly friendly (and probably the best) village pub in Willington.
Jennings and Pedigree are usually on. The lounge is definitely the more old world decor of the pub. The bar is a throw back to sixties woodchip and usually full of the younger crowd.
Shame it doesn't have much of a beer garden as this would have made it really special.
Food is average at best.

I've always liked this pub,and I've been going in for a good few years.Licensees are pleasant, food ok Jennings good,Pedigree acceptable.I thinks it's more the atmosphere were it scores. The bar understandably attracts a younger crowd and has a pool table. At weekends the lounge can be a bit like gods waiting room, but it's a typical friendly village pub.Free quiz on Wednesday is worth a visit as well.

Nice Vilage boozer with decent pints of Pedigree and Jennings. Food OK.
|
Wasn't particularly impressed with the food but the boozer itself is decent enough with a good selection of ales.
|
An altogether splendid pub, serving excellent ales in peak condition. Food is very tasty and of large proportions. Plenty of guest beeres and cider. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. This is a far better than average pub and has to be the pub of choice in the village.
As for the comments about the locals, I suspect that they all felt superior to a buffoon who can only comment on the quality of the glass.
|
After entering via the pool room, some of the locals seemed a bit too closely related for my liking, and my having 10 fingers seemed too few fingers for their liking. The other room was pleasant enough and the place had a good atmosphere. No idea about the beer, but my diet coke came in an extremely clean glass.

The Green Man is a community pub that is in the centre of Willington and close to bus route, train station and canal.
Jane & Patrick McManamon offer you a warm welcome with good beers and ales, and value-for-money home-made pub food. Main meals from 3, vegetarian dishes, childrens meals. Bar snacks, small beer garden at rear. Food served lunchtime and early evenings.
The Green Man is a beautiful old white painted building with some tables outside at the front in the summer. There is plenty of car parking spaces at the back.
There is a beamed bar and lounge and "The Green Man" is known in the village for it's fine beer and food.
Every other Thursday night at 8pm musicians assemble in a lovely inviting Session Room, upstairs and far from the madding crowd, where they can sit and share beautiful music, beautiful people and a darn good night out. No age limits. IT'S FREE but they do pass round the hat for donations but it's up to you. You can give what you want and only if you want.
