A mid evening visit to this very busy pub and restaurant on a Friday evening, we got here just before the live music started and left about 20 minutes later!
There were 4 ales on the hand pumps, 2 from Adnams, Trawlerboys from Green Jack and my choice which was Grain’s Threeonesix @ 3.8%. It was okay but didn’t quite cut it with me.
A large open plan pub with a separate dining room to the right as you enter, once the music started the door was closed on the diners, may have been because there were kids in the dining room.
As mentioned above a live band were playing and to be honest this ruined our visit a bit as we couldn’t talk over the music (fair enough I hear you say) and that’s why we left and returned to the Trowel & Hammer.
Large frontage area over looking the cliffs and sea, might be worth another visit….the food I saw go past me looked good.

Lovely refurbishment and wonderful views.....but oh dear, the beer !!! Had a pint of trawlerboys the other night which was served at probably the coldest temperature I have ever had a beer served at. Was even colder than my son's lager ! If they are going to serve real ale then it really needs to be served near the proper temperature if they are going to attract those who like real ale.

This pub (in April 2014) has new owners. All the internal walls have been knocked out to reveal the sumptuous sea view and the sea food menu is absolutely fantastic.
Don't take my word - try it.
I am just a (lucky) local resident.
My previous posting about this pub has to be ignored...

Drinkable Adnams Southwold and Broadside - what an unoriginal choice around these parts. No ambience in the large bar area whatsoever though all of the staff are pleasant enough. The food is okay but generally more expensive than elsewhere locally. My wife's Spanish omelette had rather more in it than stated on the menu and didn't really hang together. We were given a voucher saying that there was 25% off our meal next time we visited so we decided to try a Sunday carvery. It was actually quite good.with a choice from four joints of meat and plenty of vegetables with all the trimmings. However, the 25% off does not apply on Sundays. Always read the small print.

A couple of Adnams beers on. Food is ok, but nothing spectacular. Very busy on Saturday nights with carvery. On an un-related note, watch out for midnight. The street lights in certain parts of town are turned off!

NOT, 'JOLLY SAILOR' (that is a Pub of distinction somewhat further south - look it up)- "J O L L Y S A I L O R S".
If you want to know about the ingredients of your meal and ask the staff they repeatedly answer, '"I'll go to the kitchen and read the box".
Cheap microwaved food at expensive prices eaten in the ambiance of a drunk owner dressing down the staff in front of customers...
Most commonly used phraise, "Chips or salad"?
This is a costly Cafe'.

Open again now (April 2011). Good range of Adnams beer and good value food. More of a tourist Pub than the Trowel and Hammer.

Apparently this pub is currently boarded up because 'It's dangerous'.
Does anyone know any more on this...?

First visit and quite impressed. Lovely pub in excelent locations with stunning views of the sea. Looks quite nice inside and has a good selection of ales. Food was pretty good, we had the carvery. Staff seemed quite friendly and attentive. Chef was friendly when serving the meat.

Good observations & description by Charlton Fisher.
Personally, I was most disappointed by the food. The 3 course senior citizen special (ordered for my 85 year old mum) was the only decent thing we got.

A bit of an odd one is The Jolly Sailors. This cliff top pub/restaurant outwardly has all the charm of a DIY conservatory gone wrong and the interior needs a healthy helping of TLC. Having said that the staff are friendly, the food is good and the atmosphere is very relaxing with great sea views. 6/10.

Best pub food in Lowestoft (don't laugh) - huge portions and loads of local ingredients. Not a bad pub either - decent selection of ales - but definitely best to eat your food in the bar as you can never get a seat in the 'restaurant'. Alternatively come later as the locals tend to eat early, unlike us city folk. Very relaxing place to end the day - long may it continue.

it is still very good, food and beer

Have spent many a happy evening in here when working up in CEFAS......
Haven't been to Lowes for ages though, so god knows whats its like in there now.
