Rising Sun, Warsashback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Have returned to the Rising Sun after a long absence. New team so far we have had several lunchtime meals and a Valentines Night The meals were HOT and freshly cooked, not luke warm as before, no waiting for courses as we did before. Usually selection of traditional Ales, but now have a landlords bitter caled 'Rising Sun' the bar staff seemed very happy, and reflects on their service. Keep it up worth a return!!

Came back here on Sun, 16th Sept 2012. It's a really great location, and the pub slots perfectly into a long walk or bike ride! Staff were cheerful and friendly.
Food is served all day, and we had a nice lunch here around 3pm - it was 'chain pub food' but very decent ... a tasty lamb shank, excellent steak, and a good burger. We asked for a variation to the side dishes (veg instead of chips) and the staff were happy to help.
Greene King ales are usually a bit lacklustre, but they did a very good job at keeping them and I rather enjoyed my GK IPA (possibly for the first time ever!).
Come to the seaside, and have a steak and a pint - it's a good place!

New manager has taken over the RS. Menu has changed, and the upstairs is open all day, had a lunchtime meal at the weekend, and it very good, and came quickly.

Not the best of evenings to go to the 'Sun' with the 'Lads' on wet Wednesday for our 'Sportman's' lunch. Started off with a well served Speckled hen. The pub had reasonable trade. As it was 'Spice night' we went for the the: "A delicious Curry served with a drink for 7.45 Choose from a Becks Vier, Stella Artois or Kreene King IPA, 175 mm Glass of Chardonnay or Merlot or a standard sized soft drink". Now with a pint of IPA at just over 3 a 4.45 meal can't be bad. A selection of 4 'Ruby's' and we went for the strongest that would certainly light up 'the rings around Uranus' for most punters. All served on a bed of wild rice. We had a sighting of what looked like a real chef (not a microwave jockey). Another table had a monster 'steak and kidney' being served. We all checked and the plates were hot (a must in my old mans book). Some how looking a bit tatty after the re-furb but still tidy. The service was good and pleasant and the meal served up nice and sharp. All round, a good boozer and best in the Summer when you can watch the yachts sail by on the way to the Solent.

Excellent location overlooking the Hamble River, though there is a small car park between the RS and the Hamble. Oddly the car park is free with another free one two minutes walk away.
The RS is basic pub grub, order at the bar, served at your table. The last time I had a meal there, in the evening, the music (not live) was too loud which made everyone speak louder. Service was mediocre.
The upstairs gives an even better view of the boating activity and until recently was closed during the day but Im told a new area manager thinks this policy was silly, so the upstairs is open.
On a hot day or evening ask for you drinks in plastic and take them outside and sit on the small boardwalk that surrounds the car park. Very pleasant. Considering how good the location is Im surprised more is not made of the RS. Redecorated last year (2010) but already showing signs of scruffiness (the double-glazing plastic upstairs) it really just a local in a fine setting that plays predictable pub music too loudly.

I have been going to this pub for about 10 years, it has a beautiful view and overall the service is pleasant taking into consideration when it's very busy staff still amange to keep their cool and serve as much as possible.
In answer to a remark regarding the present landlady being in charge , she has been there 11 years .........must be doing something right!!!!
Most pubs now days food will come in and be served out of a packet but if it's good and taste nice then happy days! At least they don't claim that it's home made unless it actually is!!
I would certainly recommend this pub to friends and family especially for sepecial occasions as it is in a convenient location for that area and they accomodate as much as they can to meet the customers requirements.

Been here a few times in the past few months. Beautiful setting watching over the River Hamble and lots of nice nautical memorabilia inside. Very cosy and quaint.
Haven't eaten here for a while - price of food is slightly on the expensive side but looks nice and from remembering the price two years ago, might have actually reduced in price by a quid or two.

Visited over the weekend for the first time in over 20 years. Seemed pretty unchanged and still retains some character. Beer is standard Green King so nothing to get excited about there. Didn't eat, but food looked to be standard pub grub. Will maybe go back and try the food after one of our semi-regular River Hamble walks. Excellent 'Strong of Romsey' tile mural on the side of the pub.

Had a meal here last week and was really surprised, I was expecting a average menu but it was a wonderful mix of pub grub with the odd few different dishes. I had a pork steak with cheddar mash and seasonal vegetables. It was lovely I really enjoyed it and the veg was lovely, not your usual frozen peas that you get in most pubs! On the downside you do feel a little out of place when you walk in, most people will turn look at you and suss you out because your not a local, but after that all is fine. I'd definatly go again!

This pub is at Warsash, Southampton, not Southampton. Worth a listing

Having used this pub for many years I feel I can say I,ve always been pleased with the food and service and the friendly staff, We always get a warm welcome and feel that The Rising Sun is the last real pub in the area.
The food may come out of a packet as one of the other comments sugests but I think thats the case with most pubs these days, and so long as it tastes good how really cares, they also think the prices are a bit lumpy!! its the cheapest pub in the area for both food and drink.
All in all I rate this pub about 8 out of 10.

Having been to this pub several times and always been pleased with the food we decided to hold a 60th Birthday Family Sunday Lunch. Our family lunch was a three course with wines, soft drinks and coffees. Ages ranged from 10 years to 61, and all enjoyed their chosen food (all varied choices). All received their meals together and not one person was kept waiting for food or drinks when required. The Staff were very, very friendly and helpful in all that was asked of them. We would definately go there again, and other members of the family, that had not been there before will definately go again. Thank you very much for a most enjoyable family lunch.

Shame! since the present Landlady has been in charge of this pub in a great location it has done nothing but go down hill, most of the food is straight out of the packet and in the microwave. The staff are rude and unpleasant and the prices are high and the beer is often off. It now has a big screen tv so you can watch the football while having your meal "Lovely" Great location, Great pub, ruined! And I agree totally with the previous rater. 1 out of ten and thats only for the view (out of the pub)

The Rising Sun is a nice traditional pub, although not as traditional as it used to be. It used to have a nautical feel to it, with maps of the worlds oceans on the walls, a working Barometer and weather reader, and even a skittles ally a long time ago. All of this has now gone, with just plain painted walls.
There is however still a 'wood' feel to the pub which is still nice.
It used to be renound for the sailors that used to drink in there in their oilys after a day on the water - but alas no more...
Unforunately since the change of ownership this pub has gone downhill with a very 'cliquey' feel to it. Thats to say if your not a regular, your not made to feel very welcome.
Staff - including the Landlady - are very abrupt, to the point of almost being rude on occasions. Empty dinks are 'snatched' from tables - and you'll be lucky to get a thankyou for anything. Although I have on a few occasions had a 'goodbye' when leaving.
Prices in the pub seem a little lumpy too - but i'm sure thats down to Green King - rather than the current landlady etc.
Sad to say for these reasons I cant rate this pub very highly at all - only a 2 out of 10.
