please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Bog standard GK food-barn. Called midweek, didn't eat.

Usual suspects on offer, Abbot and IPA, plus guest. All reasonable to the tastebuds. Service prompt and friendly, otherwise average in every way.

2.9? Suspect one or two posters have never been in a proper 2.9 pub!

Steady 5/10

We were tempted into the pub by the sign outside proclaiming "Two meals for 9.95 all day, every day" only to find that this didn't apply on a Bank Holiday Monday. Despite this setback we had a pleasant and relaxing meal in good surroundings.

Staff were friendly and attentive. Prices were OK.

If the pub had been more honest about its meal price policy I would have given them a higher rating.

Visited with my work colleaugue for a meal on the way back to Bournemouth. Friendly atmosphere and the food whilst not cheap was good. Rocking Rudolf excellent pint. Could have done with gritting / salting car park! Overall good.

I suppose it all boils down to what you expect from a pub. Personally, I like my beer in good condition (not sour), freshly cooked food (not frozen/poorly cooked stuff), friendly bar service (not scowls) and respectable customers (not yobs). Sadly, the bracketed versions are all I've ever experienced there. I totally avoid the place nowadays. Better to stay home where one can eat and drink at less than half the price, and not feel threatened by the clientel! Or go elsewhere, of course.

Reading the reviews for this pub I wonder whether we're all talking about the same place? As one of my local pubs I've been there a fair few times, (a few nights ago in fact) and enjoyed all my visits. It's never very very busy (which some people might find lacks atmosphere) which I prefer as you don't have to fight to get served and you can hear yourself think!

The food is always of a really high standard (and not just your typical dull British pub fare) although not especially cheap I'll admit. The interior of the pub is kind of a modern spin on traditional pubs, with hard wood flooring, large bar area and leather sofas/arm chairs. I've never sat in the dining area so can't comment on this, but the seating/tables in the main bar are very comfortable and no background music to bother you or TVs playing whatever football match is on (again probably why it's a quieter pub). It always looks clean and the bathrooms are well maintained. The garden isn't massive, but has some nice shady spots to sit in when the weather's nice. Overall a nice experience if you like to be able to enjoy a drink and sit and talk without interruption or distraction.

Just happened to pass this large pub last week, and stopped for lunch. Have to say that food was superb, along with the very friendly service. I had what may seem like a boring ham, egg, and chips, but it was just great, have not tasted ham like that in years, And the eggs were runny, as requested. Friend had a smoked fish salad, which he enjoyed immensely. No idea what this place is like in the evening.

Pop in here to see if things have change!

What a suprise, NO!! If you want to die of a beating by the rough crowd or by the dogy food/drinks then this is the place to go!

Previous message about the beer is spot on - it's awful, as is the atmosphere thanks to a few rough-looking customers swearing etc.

Avoid The Ely like the plague!

An odd pub this one, thier ales are not well kept and is more for a food and lager crowd, if your a ale fan then best to go to the next pub along!

Popped in there for an evening meal. Chips were soft and did not look as if they had been freshly cooked. The vegetables were pretty grim. The carrots looked old, with lines in them and were very tough. The dwarf beans were tasteless. The waitress never asked us if everything was okay. Will not be returning there again.

Not a bad place if you don't mind having what appears to be an inevitable IPA if you live around Surrey / Hampshire borders.

Saying that, having our drinks left at the other end of the bar while the barmaid served someone else - who was presumably far more important than us put us off.

Food was good, but the music got louder and louder in the restaurant. Probably wouldn't bother again!

We occasionally go to see the Phil Brown Swingtet performing at the Ely Arms out in the country near Blackwater and Yately. We are impressed with the vast amount of space compared with our usual haunts but it lacks the range of real ale that is essential and the wine is rather expensive. Despite its history, the pub seems to have been modernised in accordance with the perceived tastes of a younger generation, destroying our cutural heritage in the process. Not for us and not for CAMRA members.

Nice sized bar area, great food, though touch on the expensive side. Large beer garden and restaurant area.

If you feel you can't make the journey home after your night out, stagger across the car park a couple of metres and check yourself in to the fairly new Travel Inn.
