user reviews of the Marquis of Granby, Epsom

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Sunday roasts are the best in the area.
Beer spot on.

Enjoyed a good pint of Purity beer in here, busy with plenty of craft beers, bit posh and nice smoking area out back.

Fiona is the best Landlady in Epsom.
Verity, Jordan and Dan are all friends of mine and do a great job.
Anyone who thinks differently is a bit thick.
fozzy123 - 12 Nov 2018 20:10
Good food - but untrained staff make ordering difficult.

Staff seem to be mostly student types, who don't stay long.

A pity - because, on this side of town, the only real competition is the Wetherspoons.
tradervic - 11 Nov 2018 23:02
Now open again, small improvement.
wealdman - 14 May 2017 15:25
Reopening 13th May.
wealdman - 10 May 2017 13:48
Closing on 18th April - for a few weeks, to facilitate a long overdue refurbishment.
wealdman - 9 Apr 2017 13:34
A worthwhile pub in many respects which serves well-kept ales - but for us, a below-par visit. We most likely had an atypical experience (a Saturday lunchtime) judging by other reviews. However, the Ladies' toilet was apparently in an execrable state. Also there were clear issues with providing the dishes that customers were expecting. Having said that, feedback was listened to, and the place is comfortably appointed and relaxed.
richythemole - 31 Jul 2013 21:05
Started in here yesterday with the boys from Sutton, good beer.

This is arguably the best pub in Epsom, depending on what you're looking for.

Lager wise, it's easily the best. Currently, there is the decent German pilsner Veltins, which I prefer to the Paulaner they used to have. In addition there's Budvar, Starpramen, Amstel, which make a nice alternative to the stranglehold of watery-beers like Fosters, Carling etc.

For Weissbeer, we have Franziskaner, which is lovely on draught.

I'm not a cider drinker but they do have Addlestones on tap plus some other bottled ciders.

Ale-wise this pub is lacking a bit. They have Doombar and a couple of others but I feel ale-drinkers will be disappointed with the selection and the general ambiance of this pub.

The food is of a high standard and offers a reasonable selection.

Had a very nice visit yesterday afternoon/early evening at this super pub at the top end of Epsom high street. All those times I went over the road to the spoon's for cheap beer - but this place shows you do sometimes get what you pay for. Super choice of beers if you like top end contenential imported pilsners wheat beers and lagers - yum! Not so great for the real ale fan as only seemed to have two hand pumps on and one of these was Pride, but this does make a nice change for me to be the one with a wide choice and not just faced with the regular mass produced cooking lagers. Nice interior great and numerous staff. Best pub in this part of Epsom? Probably.
fetchman - 29 Apr 2012 13:25
Located at the southern end of the High Street, it has a square shaped lounge with the bar largely in the centre. It is rather dingy inside, made worse by the dark paint on the walls and the low ceilings. It seems a friendly pub and the lounge is comfortable. It had 3 cask ales when I was in there, London Pride, Doom Bar and Sambrook Wandle Ale. The latter was very pleasant. Food seemed a little expensive but I wasn't eating so I couldn't comment on its value for money.

Visited the Marquis last week and had a fantastic time.

FANTASTIC fresh food which is great to see for a pub and an extensive menu. Friendly service and a fab atmosphere overall.

Not just handy for popping in for a pint but a really brilliant gastropub....

I'll definatly be heading back soon.
nairnster - 7 Dec 2011 17:25
does a decent pint of doom bar and good food.
ianowlsac - 16 Oct 2011 21:46
Oh it's the art school mob that drinks in there is it? I thought it had to be someone like that, all very chiselled they were. Only one real ale (London Pride) but when you consider the range of lagers and certainly not the bog standard cooking lagers either, request for which would be met with a raised eyebrow a la Gromit, this is perh not surprising.
rainlight - 22 Jul 2011 08:17
I went here yesterday for lunch after being dragged around town shopping, I have to say the beer ( a Polish one ) and apparently a recent brand to the pub tasted like it was off, which I presume the pipes were dirty. Anyhow the food on the other hand was absolutley devine, yes DEVINE!! A pork Belly which melted in your mouth and a 21 day hung beef roast which was cooked beautifully. Some of the best food I've had in a life time. The service wasn't amazing but OK and there was a bit of a quiff from the bogs, it was a pity about the beer. It was surprisling quiet for a Sunday lunch, defenitly a place which should be heaving but isn't. I would return for food and probably order a bottled beer next time.
makemineacold1 - 24 Jan 2011 13:08
I don't agree with the last few comments... Like this pub, good food, good drink. Have always found the bar staff to be friendly....
I'm not a student, and I find this pub caters for all. Very friendly and always been made to feel welcome!
Laulalegend - 26 Dec 2010 20:18
Terrible, unfriendly place and would not reccomend. It has a niche grungy clientele and the staff are completely disinterested in doing anything except talking with fellow staff or the grungy locals. My entire sports team, mostly smartly dressed in shirts / smart jeans, was once turned away, despite being the only customers, because a few people were still wearing the tracksuit bottoms they had worn after the match. This was dealt with in a stunningly rude fashion by a staff member who had dreadlocks, a sloppy t-shirt and earrings through his eyebrows, talk about a hypocrit. We were dealt with in far friendlier fashion at the Albion where the landlord was friendly and, shock horror, actually seemed to want some business on a quiet evening. On a few subsequent visits nothing has convicned me that this is anything other than a dirty, grungy, student bar that has a specific clientele and no wish or inclination to change this. Avoid, unless that description appeals to you
thefourmusketeers - 3 Sep 2010 16:21
I've honestly tried, but I just can't see the attraction of this place. The reports of huge numbers of draught beers are misleading... these are not draught ales, and there was actually only one available last time I went (admittedly it was damn good). I usually like a bit of quirky atmosphere, but this is more of a dingy student bar with pretensions.
sfocata - 19 Jun 2010 18:02
My partner felt like going for a nice summers day pint today. On going to this place he got served a beer and then felt like another one! On trying to get his second pint he was refused service due to his english polo shirt. Not only does this seem ludicrous given that he had already been served once but the way in which it was dealt with was extremely dissatisfying. Staff were extremely rude.
On asking to just simply have this pint in the garden and then leave he was told 'no thats just more visible'.
I wouldn't bother with this place unless you know a member of staff. We have been there before and found them rude and disinterested in customers apart from their mates at the end of the bar.
As for the other comments on student pub, I fully agree! Tatty grot hole that won't be recieving custom from us or friends anymore!
dippyemmy - 22 May 2010 20:33
Have to say I don't find it too much of a "locals only" place, bar staff have always been fine. Good range of lagers and ciders. It is a tad expensive, and has a tatty / studenty feel about it, but that's not a problem. And the slightly inflated prices seem to have the effect iof keeping the chavs out, so even better.

Food is ok, eaten there a few times. But I probably wouldn't at the moment, not because of the food but because the place smells really pissy... think there's a problem with the toilets.

So if the manager or member of staff can confirm that that's fixed, I'll gladly eat there again.

Certainly one of the better Epsom pubs.

followedthrough - 19 Feb 2010 13:22
ok if you are a student ie don't mind peeling paint, bar staff that ignore you if they don't know you. A promising pub but just wrong on every level at the moment.
chippy65 - 31 Dec 2009 18:20
Solid pub, but too locally. Needs to be more friendly to outsiders
publover24 - 17 Aug 2009 17:37
The best pub in Epsom by a mile, Good food and 21 beers on draught is a tribute to what great things can be found here. Sunday roasts are also fantastic & big for your money. Lots of nice nooks to chill out in and loads of board games to play. Quiz on tues night are good fun too. Even the staff have bags of personality. Happily waste the day away in this pub. WELL DONE THE MARQUIS
I_Love_Beer1 - 17 Aug 2009 16:09
One of the chain of Mitchells & Butlers pubs that serves real ale plus a selection of mainstream foreign beer - Paulaner Munchen, Franziskaner, Hoegaarden, Leffe etc. Ales were regulars Pride and Deuchars IPA with guest Brewdog Trashy Blonde. Wow! First time I've ever had Brewdog in a pub and it was fantastic. Grapefruit notes really came through.

Decent pub.
GuideDogSaint - 9 Jun 2009 21:30
busy!!! got a bit of a " are u local???" attitude tho, over priced ales and to me looks like it needs a long overdue refurb oi and waht is goin on with loos in there come on !!!!
sazzyp - 10 Mar 2009 16:25
Good pub atmosphere, different range of beers, prices high for a (social) reason.
porkyc - 28 Feb 2009 17:59
Unusual place - seems run down, both outside and in. Maybe its going for a bohemian atmosphere or something - but that does'nt excuse its unkempt demeanour.
lostparker - 16 Jan 2009 13:41
recently renovated loos, massive improvement! was the only previous downside to a great pub
has a slightly studenty air about the place but also a great mixed crowd of people
some nice little nooks to hide away in and enjoy a pint and a bite, and a weekly poker night
why aren't all boozers like this?
only missing a pool table, but keeps the idiots away I guess
doobydooby - 30 Dec 2008 12:45
Busy, lively pub. Fine selection of German and Belgian lagers plus up to 3 cask ales. 3 Draught ciders available currently. Comprehensive & original food menu.

MrLloydEvans - 6 Sep 2008 16:37
Great pub, great service, great staff, decent prices. Definately recommend to all due to also having a huge range of lagers, all of which have been available on the occasions I have been there.
Quentin_G - 29 May 2008 11:47
The Marquis is a decent space with a garden at the front and a small outdoor seated area at the back.

Great range of beers and lagers on. Even a Porter on.

A handshake for the Marquis. Treat the Porter with respect sunny jim.
terenced - 25 May 2008 16:36
first time in this booza since moving to the area some eight months ago and wish I'd found it sooner

nice chilled atmosphere (weds night - poker night) great Amstel, friendly staff, cavernous inside with nooks to disappear into, and a bit of slightly arty character, Banksy copies abound - all good

if they get the gents a bigger extractor fan It'd be a ten rating

will be going back at the weekend to see what's it's like - think I found my new local!
doobydooby - 22 May 2008 14:31
Good Pub.Only visited by me during the day when my age is acceptable! at night I am advised it turns into a beacon for young decerning embibers and the music goes up in volume; still, nice to see a Pub owned by a brewery create a character for itself .
jeffdaff - 20 Feb 2008 11:57
Excellent pub, been drinking here for years!

Staff are friendly, cold beers, and always has good looking customers.
drunkdriver - 1 Nov 2007 14:52
Got a bit of character, seemed busy on my visit, yet was served fairly quickly

I would definately return, as a longer stay would be welcome
the_original_rawnsleys - 18 Oct 2007 08:45
Popped into the Marquis last night for a quick two before going to the theatre. Much prefer the old name of the Marquis rather than the flutter!! Very busy due to Derby Day but the Pimms and beer flowing well. Got served after one person, excellent. Good range of beers as ever but the Bud budvar was off - never mind this time, not surprised though due to busy busy. Barbeque on the side, good food, excellent as normal.
hseal43 - 3 Jun 2007 16:36
Great pub, and great atmosphere. The most refined of the town centre pubs in Epsom and definitely worth a visit. Menu resembles a Gastro pub, and the pub itself is cavernous inside with lots of character and seating. European premium lagers on tap and a good wine list.
sidm - 9 May 2007 17:26
This has been my local for many years now. A wonderful place, good selection of beers, friendly staff and good food. What more could you ask?
cAsbo - 15 Feb 2007 11:58
Great atmosphere, wonderfull selection of the finest ales, few pirates, food fit for the Queen's tennis partners, attractive yet proffessional staff and the most concise pub quiz in the land.
by far the greatest pub within staggering distance of my house.
many out of ten.

harrynotlarryfool - 13 Feb 2007 11:15
Seems to attract the art-school element, but they're no trouble. This pub has much changed from when I remembered it from my youth, but it remains a pleasant place to have a drink in.

Considering what has happened to Epsom High Street and it's related public houses in the past few years, the Marquis remains an oasis of calm, grown-up drinking. Long may it continue.

A pub to keep quiet about, in case the young idiots from the other end of the High Street spoil it.
parkhillian - 24 Nov 2006 16:55
I was addicted to this pub but the novelty has worn off.

At first it may appear that this place is cool, laid-back and very 'bo-ho' but I see through the lie.

This pub is a fake and it is a sham/shame.

It is very cunning at its pretence playing cool music and had me convinced for months.

It is one of the better pubs in Epsom but that shows how bad most Epsom pub are.
pgreenwood - 8 Oct 2006 23:04
Good refurb, excellent staff always. Nice mix of clientele. Well done.
BrianE - 18 Sep 2006 21:25
Love this place! Being a tad older I need somewhere I can go for a relaxed atmosphere! Bit pricer than most places in Epsom but I guarantee it's worth a visit!
oohahhjustanotherone - 8 Aug 2006 14:13
Very pleasant place for as beer. Good range of lagers, friendly attractive girls behind the bar, I have never had to wait to be served for more than a minute or two, good menu. Papers to read. A pleasure to sit and chill out away from the "who's next" service by the staff at Wetherspoons across the road.
anonymous - 29 May 2006 11:17
On behalf of the "wine drinking middle agers" I would like to say thank you to the genius (who ever it is) that came up with idea of changing this local pub around. Epsom is full of "Cheap Feer/Cheap Food/Chav/Student" Pubs, and this pub had turned into one of the sticky-est (if not worst). For the people who actually live and work in Epsom, there was nowhere to actually have a nice beer and unwind ...and maybe meet up with some friends and not have music blasted into your head or be preoccupied by the punch up out side. It's now fantastic, great beer, great food, the staff are nice as well ... We now have a decent local pub again !!!! ... I hope it lasts.
anonymous - 26 May 2006 14:10
To be honest this was a pub that I stopped going to for a few years but thought I'd give a go recently due to the fact it had been refurbished.
WOW! What a difference, it's like a different place altogether now. It has an outstanding range of real ales and continental beers and there is a real ambience about the place which never existed before. Haven't tried the food but the menu looks good. Well done to the management, they've got it just right.

Barney1 - 18 Apr 2006 16:22
Not sure about the refurb - I went in for the footie as usual and you won't find none here any more! Dark and full of wine drinking middle agers. How did they change the clientele so quickly?! Might give the continental bevvies a second look some time, but not sure I can be bothered.
bone_idol - 21 Mar 2006 00:13
NB/ The reviews below were before the refurb, and I would have agreed with all. Now under new management and fortunately looking better than it did, I would have to say the pub has been turned around in fantastic style. A superbly wide range of traditional and continental bevvies, some more unusual than others, and bright friendly bar staff, make this a superb bar. Moody lighting/ candles, but clean and up together. Happy staff - that's the ticket..(and beer of course!)8/10
B.R.Drinker - 18 Mar 2006 08:28
Great pub, though if you are one to complain about the speed of service in pubs such as Wetherspoons, then you will encounter the same problem here, due to normally having a maximum of two bar staff on during peak teams there can be quite a wait
Sepheh - 3 Oct 2005 04:48
It's been redecorated inside now. Looks good.

The barmaid wearing very little was easy on the eyes too :-)
Jack_Carter - 15 May 2005 19:21
A great central Epsom bar. Used to have a fairly traditional decor, but now has a stimulating, colourful interior. Friendly bar staff and a nice atmosphere. Lots of space out front if you want to watch the world go by on sunny days. Shame it wasn't called the Marquis of Lorne for many hours of peurile humour.
Jack_Carter - 29 Mar 2005 13:12
What can be said about the Marquis apart from the fact that it is a quality pub if your in Epsom then this is the palce to go
Matt1664 - 21 Dec 2004 16:08
Looks shite from outside but on entering isn't too bad. Very relaxed, lots of students due to cheap alcohol, not that I'm complaining! Always busy, good alround if you want a pub you can happily get pissed in.
anonymous - 15 Oct 2004 13:26
Pub is growing in popularity due to excellent staff and ervice, also some great discount offers. Lots nice people
Rosie - 12 Feb 2004 18:11
Quiz nites a laugh with that guy who wears the dorkey jacket, the only place where i could find tequila rose, atmosphere was nice a quaint
Kim - 14 Dec 2003 13:42
Bexky is back and food has been fantastic again.

Top food, top pub again, keep up the good work Becky!!!!

I took my girlfriend there and we had a meal. Her chicken topped with cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce was topped with gravy. On complaining we were told they had a new chef... he must be northern to make a gaff like that. No free drinks were forthcoming either!
Matt Le Ross - 10 Jun 2003 15:55
Good pub, ex firkin just had a refirb, big screen good food, friendly staff and regulars
Danny Burchett - 8 Oct 2002 16:59
