please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Better than some of the reviews have been saying as it was cheerful enough considering it's a town centre kind of boozer. TFA Yakima was an unusual beer to find on. Bar staff nice.
|
I was in here last Saturday pm and unlike JohnPA found the sevice very poor. No one serving but a woman was on a mobile phone behind the bar. 3 other customers waiting too. After a few minutes the woman puts down her phone and starts to serve at the same time as a barman appears. 4 hand pulls with one out of use, 1 for London Pride 1 for Robinsons Trooper. 1 for Jennings Cumberland Ale which i tried and it was ok and cost £3.14 a pint.

I live in Kingston and work in Twickenham, I often go to The George for lunch as the food and service is the best in the area and it is very reasonably priced. I often come to Twickenham for a night out and always go to the George.
There is a good atmosphere in the pub in the day and at night, I have never been in during a football match but I imagine that it is much like any other pub that shows the football.
I really do not understand the reviews saying it is chav central if you were in the pub around 5 years ago then yes I would agree however since the current manager has taken over I know he has made a real effort to turn the pub around and he has done an excellent job.
In my opinion this is one of the best pubs in the area and I would recomend it to anyone.

This pub has always made me feel welcome and I have always had a laugh in here, the above comment saying chav chav chav is obviously not from twickenham as I live in surrey now but grew up in the Teddington/Twickenham area and I still go to this place when ever I am in the area, never had a problem in here and the locals are friendly and always engaging in a conversation, large outdoor area plus an outdoor bar with a large tv for summer beer drinking, cant be bad, pool, cheap ale, and good company
|
recently went there for the man utd/chelsea game atmosphere was brilliant pub was packed like every pub that showed it. And even ran out of glasses and some people had to settle for disgusting plastic glasses (in the afternoon). With reference to the pibull on the roof Angel is the dog in question and never stops barking. Regulary runs out of the cheap beer on a monday its not as bad other posters say nice place to go for a cheap, quiet lunchtime pint in the garden if only angel would shut up apart from that can't think of much wrong with it the management and staff are trying their best.
|
I wouldn't normally go near this place, but Sunday nights are now Jam nights with very good music and people, and there are 3 real ales at 2 (yes two quid). The state of the toilets however, attest to it's weekday reputation, but if this pub is on the up then it's good news for Twickenham.
|
The George was fantastic i went there Thursday for a 4 Wheel Drive live music gig and was blown away by how friendly the staff and clientel were. the beer is reasonably priced for the area too. i was informed there would be live music ebery thursday and im sire it wont dissapont as for a pitbull on the roof the only dog i saw was a well behaved beautiful staff called angel. living in Twickenham most my life i can honestly say that this is one of the safest pubs here. when you have pubs like the grand union loosing late liscence because of serious violence and web ellis loosing DJ's because of violence once again the george hasnt had one fight break out in 2 YEARS at least. I think a lot of these posts are unfounded and unfair and urge you all to go down and check it out for yourself. if you like live music go down on a sunday or thursday afternoon if you like football or rugby its great whenever its on if you like chart rnb music sat nights are for you it caters for all
|
I used to work here...The George has a bad reputation from bad years of management, now there's someone new in house it has improved and its easy for you to sit here and anonymously criticize but it a pub that caters for its younger generation and there loyal regulars who want to sit and have there pint in peace. I've had many a good nights here so go down on a planned party night and see how it is!
|
chav chav chav chav
|
a pitbull lives on the roof
|
brilliant! pint + fight = 3 (getting bottled may cost extra)
|
Ok pub in Twickenham.
|
Slipped in last night having parked along the street and was in need of the closest boozer. Was fairly underwhelmed with what we found. The first problem was that London Pride was off so my mate had to settle for a Stella, and along with a pint of coke came in at a shade under 6. The style to us appeared to be a Wetherspoons knock off (see the similar looking menu, including prices and offers) and the clientele seemed to be the lower end of the Twickenham class structure. Some positives for this place include the pool table, dart board and wide selection of fruits and quiz machines.
|
Do not go to this pub very cheap and chav like people. Also do not trust the staff as they gave me change from a 5 note when I gave them 10 and accused me of lying and when I asked someone to check the till they refused and arranged for the bouncer to come and speak to me. Never again will I go to this establishment again and I think giving it a rating of zero is purely generous.
|
Shockingly bad pub unless you need a ride to A&E in an ambulance- there's practically always one permanently positioned outside awaiting blood soaked, brain dead lout with a face full of glass grunting incoherent football chants while his belt-skirted peroxide girlfriend staggers and squawks in the background.
|
Needs renaming. Suggest "The Chav" Avoid at all costs.
|
A friend once said to me that she thought it would be a good PR move for the pub to attach 'Bush' to the end of its name. She said this would help align the pub with the former US President; both have no soul and both attract conservative minded thugs.
It is therefore no surprise that I stop here only to criticise this dreadful establishment. Another friend told me that he saw a fight move from the pub onto a stationary 275 bus. Such is the clientele that most enjoy behaving just as animalistically in a public space as they do in their white Sutton slums.
It is the worst pub in Twickenham with the exemption of one. Shall I tell you which pub is even worse? A pub so horrificlly vile that its customers often boycott it? I'll give you three clues:
1) It has a drunk running it. 2) It is by the river. 3) Its name sounds like 'Army Balms'.

A cavernous pub with a large screen TV and a collection of bouncers outside, what more do you need to know? When I went all three hand pumps had Doombar on which is normally quite drinkable but this was almost unpleasant.
|
I watched the first half of the Man U(re) game in here on Saturday afternoon and didnt really come out with any complaints other than the lack of and positioning of the seating. The match was on the projector screen and the TVs at the back whilst a rugby game was being shown on the plasma at the front of the pub. The pub also shows sport on Setanta and there is a pool table towards the rear.
I found the staff to be friendly enough and the prices to be very reasonable. Landlord and various bog standard lagers were available from the bar.
Its a fairly large pub that lacks some atmosphere and from reading the other posts it sounds like I left before the locals arrived as the other patrons all seemed in good spirits.
I wouldnt make the effort to go here again, but I would pop in if I was passing by and another match was on.
|
Hellish. People in there actually looking for a reason to kick off. I can imagine the only reason it's still open is to concentrate the undesirables in one venue and make it easier for the police.
|
Hideous place full of fighting hooligans. Really lets down the main street in Twickenham. I hope it burns down soon...
|
Fine for a quick, cheap drink after work just before pay day but stay any later than 9pm and it becomes a different place altogether. I wouldn't even venture near on a weekend - full of young people that remind me I am not so young anymore!
|
The George isn't that bad! I agree that it attracts a younger crowd but what do you expect? Almost everywhere in twickenham is now over 21's! The george is good for having a dance to some cheesy music from 12 till 1 when u can't afford 2 go 2 kingston and i've been there many times, and have never seen the trouble it's known for!
Jen21 - 27 Jun 2006 08:27 |
Was empty on a Rugby day. Says it all really. Large empty space with no people.
|
I agree this pub does attract the younger crowd ( we where all young once remember ). It all depends on what you what. This pub has DJ's at the weekend. The only other place that has a DJ is the cabbage patch which cater for a different clientel. You have other pubs like the Sorting room which does not have DJ's but does also attract the younger crowd. There are pubs in Twickenham for all taste's. The george is not that bad a place. Just go there have a beer and a boogie.
|
As a pub/bar I despise, it is odd to wonder why I went in the George for a drink on a Thursday night recently. What is even odder is that I am going to post some praise for it. I wonder whether it was so much nicer because it was chav-less - Maybe because it was empty! The service was pretty friendly. They seem to have decorated it. Karoake was on, which I like.
I think the places sheer appalling reputation for chav hell has scared away all the customers, including the Chavs. And perhaps the owners are changing to try and attract normal clientele. Tellingly, the empty Thursday I went in, Filthy McNastys round the corner was packed!
I probably wouldn't choose to come in here again, but it's not as bad as I remembered. Honest.
|
i am suspicious of any positive comment about this pub. it is the sort of pub with a bad reputation because everyone who goes there wants to be bad. it is a melting pot for young men from limited walks of life, chelsea supporters and groups of builders who enjoy laughing loudly. I am sure most of the drinkers do think about their futres and their loves, its just that they dont like it as much as binge drinking.

I THINK SOME OF THE COMMENTS YOU NEED TO SEE IT NOW A HOLE LOT BETTER WITH THE NEW MANAGER ITS NOW OVER 21s ON FRIDAY AND SAT NIGHTS THE DJ'S ARE THE SAME AND THE PUB LOOKS GREAT IT HAS LARGE FLAT TV'S AND THE BIG SCREEN AND THE PUB HAS HAD A GOOD REFERB WITH NEW BEERS IN INCLUDING LONDON PRIDE I WAS IN THERE ON THE ENGLAND V WHALES RUGBY MATCH DAY IT WAS GREAT THE PUB WAS FULL ALL DAY WITH A GREAT BUNCH OF STAFF ALL WORKING TOGETHER TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE GOT SERVED QUICKLY AND THE ATOMPHERE WAS BRILL THEY STILL HAVE ALL THE ENTERTAINMENT ON DURING THE WEEK THEY HAVE FAT BLOKE KARAOKE ON THURSDAYS AND QUIS WITH HARRY POTTER ON SUNDAYS AND FRIDAY NIGHTS THEY ARE OPEN TILL 1AM WITH ALL YOUR CLUB CLASSICS
IT HAS CHANGED AND ITS A WHOLE LOT BETTER NOW THAN WHAT IT HAS BEEN ITS WORTH A PINT IN THERE TO SEE IT
|
two words, chav central. Avoid!
|
I agree with the last couple of comments the pub seems so much better now, well definately be going back there this weekend

Been going to this page for a long time now. Stopped going there about a year ago but have recently started going back. The atmosphere has changed. The decor is still the same ( could do with a referb ) but at the weekend the lights are dimmed low and disco lights come on. There are still a few idiots that go in the pub but there is no trouble.
The Dj's play a mixture of music which is great for all tastes. I popped in this pub on Thursday and to my amazement a booth had been put in for the DJ's. This was a shock but it looks great. It ias about time the atmosphere was brought back to this pub and it has. Well done to the management.
|
the george is the place to be now!!! the place is under new managment and he is great the is now more disco lighting and a dj booth which has been put in by the resident djs it is so nice to party here now there is a quiz and disco on thursday nights till midnight the friday and sat night its open till 1am with the most sexiest djs rahhh and i love it when they play ther party cheesy sets its great but if ur in to r&b you have to getin ther b4 11pm after its party time then thers is karaoke and discos on alternating sundays its stii the same decor but the atmosphere is so much better now you have to re visit its the party place of twickenham like the patch but they dont charge to get in its so nice to see all age groups back in the place ile be there ever thursday till sunday now its that good hope i might see some of you there
|
a whole new atmosphere?? How will that be? Banned charvers and alcopops perhaps?
anonymous - 27 Sep 2005 12:11 |
Under new management now, new quiz night on thursday nights open till 12pm. with a whole new atmosphere at the weekends.
anonymous - 21 Sep 2005 18:55 |
Too right Sergeant Howie - I remember the old pub as well, and it was a good one - It was only 5 years ago they changed it to their current format, but it seems so much longer..
TheGP - 23 Jun 2005 13:43 |
15 years ago this was a great pub. I still remember going in there in about 1990 and having one of the best pints of Flowers I've ever had. Now it is agro central. Bad, indifferent staff, dreadful beer. Great place to wander into on your first day out of Feltham Young Offenders Institute to meet up with your 17-year-old mates and engage in a fresh stabbing. Remember coming back into Twickers 'bout five years ago near closing time and hearing the sound of loads of dogs barking and seeing King Street at a standstill. I heard later that about 30 coppers had taken the expediency of simply arresting everyone in the pub and hearded them round the corner to the police station. There had been a stabbing that night, I heard. Overall a lousy, useless dump full of scum. Go here if the only other option is slitting your wrists.
|
I went in here once two years ago and have never been back. I didn't finish my pint either cos it was undrinkable. It's full of litle chavs, all of whom are under 21 so unless you're very young and maybe a bit predisposed to violence after 4 Bacardi Breezers and a couple of Aftershocks, avoid at all costs. It would be far more at home in Staines.
|
Chav Central - ( Twickenham Branch Line )
|
Went in here after a long long abscence and it was still truly awful - Hobgoblin aside, the worst pub in Twickenham. Didn't even finish my pint - Whatever they have in the pumps churns out a truly awful pint of 1664 - Tasted nothing like it should and my partners Carling was the same - Gassy chemical vomit - Some would say Carling is like that anyway, but in here it is 100 times worse.. But then all the weekend Chav punters drink Bacardi Breezers and Aftershocks anyway, so why should the barstaff care? Avoid at all costs..
TheGP - 11 Feb 2005 09:14 |
Nasty place I last visted in 2002 for Karaoke competion....I know don't say it....almost got decked by a 40 year old who was upset I could sing, only to be contfronted by her under aged daughter in the toilets. Will not ever go back here....always a police car outside of a Saturday night so I guess the same kinda poeple still drink there. Does well as extra shelter for the bus stop outside though. LOL
|
Previous contributors ( Zod and the GP ) are spot on. There is always at least one pub in every town centre to avoid and this is Twickenham's.
|
AWOOOGA! AWOOOGA! CHARVER ALERT! Any pub that sells mocktails in oversized plastic tubing needs to be avoided. Full of nasty Fred Perry wearing teenie-thugs. The days of the old log fire and low ceilings are long gone. This place is bad, seriously, it's REALLY bad.
|
I remember, a long long time ago (or 5 years ago to be precise) the George was a lovely pub, full of oak panels and decent beer.
Now sadly, has been subject to a dodgy refit and the soul has been ripped out of it. The type of pub that sells aftershock. When you see drunks on the news in Twickenham, and they are going on about "yob culture" or binge drinking, chances are they will have been in here, the Hob Goblin or the Sorting Room.
Avoid - Go to one of the other very nice pubs in Twickenham on this site.
TheGP - 10 Sep 2004 11:27 |
similar to the hob- sticky and dirty. good if your really drunk.
sally - 14 Jun 2004 16:12 |
Avoid at all costs unless you are below 21. I'm not so can't comment.
David - 18 May 2004 01:24 |
It always amazes me that people go to this dreadful excuse for a pub, particularly when there are so many better options nearby. A depressingly boring, plain pub that lacks a single positive that i can find. Try and prove me wrong if you dare!
Alex - 13 Feb 2004 16:33 |
A very good bar. The staff there are very good and very professional. The Interior is very nice, and the prices, while not the best in Twickenham are not unreasonable. There are two distinct crowds at The George. During the day it is full of older people, and people on there lunch breaks. The atmosphere is very calm and slow. It is a great place to go to, grab a paper, and relax. There are smoking and non-smoking sections and the staff are very good. The food is not half bad either, and all in all it's a great place. In the evenings the pub completely changes and the crowd becomes younger, the music louder and the lights darker. The Shooters and cocktails they do are fantastic and again, the staff are very good at their job. It has a late licence which is all the better and so there's no rush and most of all the atmosphere is really good...Simon is a prat but aside from him all the staff are fantastic, professional, good looking and a pleasure to be around. It's a good pub, and I know when I go to Twickenham that's where Ill be. Well done to The George
George - 9 Feb 2004 02:17 |
Couldn't agree more with Niall (29/08), could be a really nice pub and sure it once was (James 04/12). Tacky, featureless, smelly. One of those pubs with wooden floors that is always sticky from spilt beer. The only going for it is the Giant Jenga and Connect4
|
Was a good pub but since Keith has left and his friend Dave the pub has gone down hill. Dj's are good and play what u want but atmosphere has changed.
anonymous - 14 Nov 2003 17:12 |
This pub is hell on earth, a playground for those who are under 18!! Terrible service, atmosphere and people. You would have to pay me to go back into this dive for a drink. AWFUL!!
Maria - 4 Nov 2003 20:24 |
Not impressed. Full of girls + boys with attitude problems. The bouncers need to start asking the right people for ID + stop being so rude. Bar staff need to get a move on. As for the toilets, please sort them out they are minging.
anonymous - 15 Sep 2003 16:42 |
Should be closed. Just adds to the late night time crappy violent atmosphere in Twick. A lot of knackers who are not from Twick go there. Im sure some decent people go there. Im far too old for the place but wouldnt go there even if I was 20 years younger. Really bad effect on Twick.
Niall - 29 Aug 2003 16:51 |
Very good for a laugh!
Shevronne - 4 Apr 2003 13:31 |
I worked there in 1980 and it had the best beer for miles. We had several real ales, along with the mass produced stuff, that deserved more patronage than they got. My bedroom windows are the two on the second floor right.
|
Great atmosphere, loadsa gorgeous guys!
anonymous - 1 Dec 2002 21:06 |
Nice pub. The best place with a late license in Twickenham so the perfect end to any pub crawl. Nice looking barmaid as well ;)
