user reviews of the Wheatsheaf, Ewell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Under new management since the lockdowns and they have spent a lot of money landscaping the garden and adding a large covered heated seating area.
4 real ales, all in good condition,
No food, no frills, this is just a great proper old fashioned comfortable friendly pub
villageidoit - 21 Jan 2022 15:44
Went to the wheaty last week and there were loads of morris dancers prancing about waving hankies and banging their sticks together. What a laff we had.Great place when there is entertainment on.

A really lovely pub. We hosted a baby shower there recently and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating. They supplied a lovely buffet and let us rearrange all the furniture and we didn't even have to tidy up! Everyone had a great time, thanks again Kim and team. Looking forward to visiting this weekend and seeing the new children's play area.

A great little traditional local that serves 4 well kept local cask ales, plus a good selection of keg beers. The garden is a great little sun trap, with I understand, more improvements on the way. The pub also lays on charity events such as the occasional quiz and music event, has tv sports and caters for private functions...you may also bump into the local Morris Men on occasion! A little off the beaten track but a great local.

second most expensive pub in the world
mickmuncher - 26 Oct 2014 10:57
This is located just up the road from the Spring. It has no off street parking but a good shaped lounge. The seating is comfortable and is located around the edges of the room with a large bare standing area in the middle. The bar is located at the rear of the lounge and had 4 real ales on the bar including some uncommon ones. Although near the 8 Bells and despite superior seating and a better choice of beers was virtually empty. They don't appear to do food which may be the reason. It is a good choice for real ales.
boozers_knows - 14 Aug 2014 15:21
Very nice pub with some good beers on. Went in on Boxing day and the place was heaving. Forgot they had the parade and seemed the whole of Epsom and Ewell had turned up.

Otherwise very comfortable, in a nice location and apparently the garden is quite a suntrap, when we get any sun that is! Recommended.

I went to this pub last night for a music quiz and it's lovely, a real old fashioned friendly pub. The wine was good and the landlord let us order in a takeaway as my friend had been working all day and hadn't eaten. I hope to go back in the summer to enjoy the garden
PoppyB - 23 Jan 2014 10:35
Ok the beer is good. Four ales on, couple of guests. Strange feel to this pub. Friday night music being played into the garden which spoils a nice garden spot. Seems to attract an interesting crowd, won't be rushing back

Don't know what badbadboy is talking about. Popped into the Wheatsheaf and found it be homely, friendly and served a cracking pint. They have recently installed Sky Sports and it made a pleasant change to watch the football without any swearing. Keep up the good work the Wheatsheaf - it is by far the best traditional pub in and around Ewell.
Themightyreds - 2 Feb 2013 15:08
When will they learn you can't make friends with travellers shame it wasn't Lee or Demi being carted off in the ablulance saturday, grow up and smell the coffee your pub is now on a par with the Sefton ( for those that may not remember it was a real dive on Longmead Estate which was run by travellers and scum)
BADBADBOY - 12 Nov 2012 06:09
Evidently food is now available again. Lunch times only.
Jennings1234 - 16 Mar 2012 21:16
A very nice pub, but unfortunately food no longer served, perhaps because good cheap grub can be had at The Eight Bells, round the corner.
Jennings1234 - 15 Jan 2012 13:56
The sooner the better FATTY & TOURETTES are back in their beloved Bells the better !! they get under everyones skin but the funny thing is that they are TOO THICK to even notice, they make for great entertainment, especially when she picks on little kids, be warned she can eat a whole one and by the looks of him he has eaten a tribe lol............

GREAT PUB APART FROM THESE IRRITATING PEOPLE !!
BADBADBOY - 17 Apr 2011 13:15
Best pub in Ewell. This cosy traditional pub has recently undergone a facelift and looks great. The bar staff, including the new manager, were very attentive despite it being very busy for the 6 nations rugby. I tried a pint of Young's and TEA; both of which were in tip top condition. Nice to see live music returning to the venue.
Themightyreds - 5 Feb 2011 16:38
A great small local pub with a fine, if limited, selection of well kept cask ales, (usually Youngs Ordinary, Bombardier plus a guest beer) plus the usual selection of keg beers. A good friendly atmosphere. The new landlord and owners are doing a great job and the decor is getting some TLC., Plus a few events are happening, along with the occassional visit from the Morris Men. A bit off the main track but worth a visit.
Woodsta - 2 Feb 2011 18:02
Under new ownership , had a pint there pre Christmas , nice cosy atmosphere
ichelski - 10 Jan 2011 13:55
Small, friendly local pub. Considering I live in Ewell I do not use it enough but every time I have it is superb.
jack0 - 6 Apr 2010 17:52
Small and very local, you can hear the creaking of necks and feel the inspection of two dozen suspicious eyes the moment you walk in. However they did have a decent cider on tap so we stayed for one. Not too bad but not my sort of place.
followedthrough - 6 Mar 2010 16:06
This is just a good ordinary pub. No frills, good beer, warm and comfortable surroundings.
Loos a bit snug, but recently decorated. Well attended by locals and can be busy at prime times as it is a small pub with a small serving area. Good log fires when cold. Most staff can be friendly but sometimes stern and efficient. Would go again. PS Saw the local Morris Men here and it was great.
bobtherambler - 18 Nov 2009 15:39
nice proper old pub. real ales well kepted all sorts of lager. friendly landlord and barstaff . live music.
mickmuncher - 20 Oct 2009 07:51
Was one of our favourite pubs for live music. However, sadly, since the lovely Julie left, the new Management has absolutely no regard whatsoever for regular performers with long-standing bookings. Performers beware!
ladyjanegrey - 11 Aug 2009 12:46
A barebones type pub with a tired feel to it. Oodles of character but more ironically from the kitch bric-a-brac on display. Bright white walls and with what looks like the contents of a car boot sale on the walls.

Pluses are the nice staff though and pleasant atmosphere derived from the punters. Very small though, so you will be in the middle of trouble if it ever brewd up.
sidm - 25 Jun 2009 17:09
Cosy old style pub. Youngs Ordinary, Bombardier and a rotating guest. Theakstons Best had just gone off to be replaced by Pedigree, Surrey Hills Shere Drop after that.
GuideDogSaint - 31 May 2009 23:11
Nice old fashioned pub with some good interior decor. Youngs Bitter, Bombardier, and Badger Tanglefoot were on. Small paved area out the back which was pleasant as well as we had just cycled from Kingston.
rainlight - 20 May 2009 23:04
The pub is quirky, the beer is good and well kept the food is excellent and the staff fantastic,

One slight draw back is the step going to the toilets, it is very damgerous and not marked at all, so if you don't trip up it you will fall down it, not good for the p***ed or the infirm
oldwitch001 - 23 Feb 2009 14:45
The best of the Ewell pubs - a traditional, proper, pub. Old fashioned, with a good load of quirky locals, attentive staff and a pub feel to it. I haven't tried the food so I can't comment, but this is definitely a pub that serves food rather than a restaurant that sells beer. There are too many pubs in Ewell in these harsh financial times - let's hope that the Wheatsheaf is one of the ones that survives.
BobFerris - 7 Jan 2009 15:17
Thanks to it being in the GBG, TomTom led us here for refreshment on the way back from the retail hell that is Kingston on the Saturday before Christmas. And a very pleasant half hour it was too.

A few years ago this would have been yet another unremarkable suburban boozer which we would have passed by and left to the locals. Now of course most of them have either turned into flats or been refurbished into the gastrosphere: even more so in this part of the world. So yes, nothing much has changed here in years, and - indeed paradoxically - how refreshing that is.

Anyway all clean and tidy, friendly service, friendly locals and decent smokers' arrangements. Beers appear to be Youngs/Wells oriented plus TT Landlord which was in decent shape.

It's never going to be a destination pub, but definitely worth a look if you're passing and after a proper pub. I for one would be jolly pleased if it were my local.
nickdavies - 20 Dec 2008 19:57
Nice traditional pub this one, period decor, friendly staff and dedicated landlady. Something needs to be done about the step infront of the toilets, very dangerous, hope they have good insurance. Good ale and bitter but lager usually a bit flat, will scare away some customers, but for me probably the best trad pub in Ewell
happyheating - 30 Oct 2008 07:58
Funny clicky little pub lost alot of its charm over the years. Wouldn't bother going for a 2nd visit
johnl - 27 Dec 2007 11:48
Were a little disappointed with this pub although friendly enough and nothing to complain about. Just prefered the Star
lout_from_the_lane - 18 Dec 2007 17:09
Very nice improvements being made, a big well done to the new Landlady Emma, and a good effort made for the smokers
Aimee - 30 Jul 2007 12:57
Recently changed hands.
Really welcoming place. Lovely atmosphere and nice people. Landlady is lovely.
The re vamped garden is going to be great this summer.
Definately hang out here and while away some hours.
Hardrhino - 8 Jun 2007 09:21
brilliant village pub, good quallity food and drink, nice atmosphere, run by a top bloke.
plus lovely barmaids.
harrynotlarryfool - 13 Feb 2007 11:37
Smokey, full of chavs and Saturday nights entertainment is too "try hard". The lunch time food is good though. Would go there for lunch any day but avoid Saturday nights fun and games like the plague - it's just a load of noise and tarts in short skirts (but some of you might like that sort of thing!!).
anonymous - 27 Jan 2007 22:34
Only GBG 2007 pub in Ewell. Guest Beer changes regularly (Landlord on this visit, very well kept) Staff very friendly.
MrLloydEvans - 20 Sep 2006 17:15
What a clicky little pub
johnl - 8 Jul 2006 07:09
Really nice village pub. Secluded garden at the back is particularly good, especially on a pleasant summer's evening.

The best pub in Ewell by a mile.
TheSeeker - 30 Jun 2006 15:00
Great little pub the Landlady and barmaids are GEMS worth a visit just for a decent pint and a veiw of the bar staff, had a couple of pints in the garden what a great little haven away from it all, if your in Ewell try it you won't be disappointed, had lunch there and that was pretty good too. Will be back with the missus on sat night for the music love soul.
bill27 - 8 Jun 2006 15:56
Small one-bar local's pub that has no unique characteristics worth reporting. Appears to be in the early stages of a re-furb, so maybe it should be given another chance in the summer.
parkhillian - 23 Jan 2006 12:57
mitomighty.
The pub is still the same if not better, well worth another visit, I was there recently and I promise you it,s still got great barmaids, great beer and the landlady's gorgeous I know she'e my missus.

kerwood - 22 Dec 2005 03:17
Please tell me this place is still the same charming little nutcracker as ever... it used to be a right good watering hole. looking forward to going back.
mitomighty - 9 Dec 2005 22:18
We did a small pub crawl of Ewell last night (five pubs)and popped in here for a pint...small pub and very typically English..pity about the customers who seemed to be attached to the bar and do not move over so that you can be served...maybe we chose a bad night so we will be back...cracking pint of Bombadier which made the wait at the bar nearly worth it.
Earlhamcourt - 14 Sep 2005 09:25
Still a cracking little pub, unfortunately wingers got the landlords name wrong it's John but he won't hold it against you!! If Carlesberg went there they'd probably say it's the best pub south of Watford.
anonymous - 29 Aug 2005 15:38
Very, very nice. Local beers, locals' pub, lovely barstaff.
beeronaut - 13 Jul 2005 23:50
What a diamond of a watering hole in Ewell. Great atmosphere and great beers. You would usually find the pub fully friendly locals. It has a loveley beer garden at the back for those perfect summer evenings to just sit and drink. Beer just tastes better form those lovelies behind the bar.
arup - 27 Jun 2005 10:45
Good beer. Good atmosphere. Pleasant garden. Lovely barmaids. *****
Gilesg - 26 Jun 2005 14:33
Lovely pub. The manager John is a lovely bloke and will always find time to sit and have a chat to you. He has the finest bar maids in Epsom and Ewell, and they are all happy and polite. Good food, Good beer, Good barmaids, im in heaven..........
malakie - 29 Mar 2005 16:05
An amazing little pub. Excellent service and always with a smile from an attractive array of barmaids - who are all featured on their calendar for charity. When landlord Brian (also featured on the calendar in dubious pose!) overheard that it my birthday he bought my next drink and he didn't even know me.
The entertainment is usually first class; we first saw Steve from the "X-Factor" there earlier this year. I have not heard or experienced anything bad about the pub, its a great little place for young and old with a cosy atmosphere.
Wingers - 19 Nov 2004 14:43
A great drinkers pub. Good food lunchtime food (but finishes @ 2pm and not on Sundays). best bar maids in the village.
Tony Bell - 24 Sep 2004 13:04
A safe haven for the serious drinker. Good food and friendly staff. Older drinkers will remember the 80s when the pub was run by Brian and Clare... It has been returned to those great days. Dont spoil it keep up the good work.
Chalkie - 8 Sep 2004 20:52
The best pub in the village by far, worth that little extra walk outside the village. Food excellent with a great fun loving landlord. Raised over 3500 for charity with the Wheatsheaf calendar. Friendly staff and customers who are always happy to help. Prices very reasonable far cheaper than others in the village. Take a look for yourself.
j - 30 Apr 2004 20:52
was in this pub a few weeks ago as my parents drink there. it is a very friendly pub with good bands on a saturday night. and dont get me started on the barmaids..........
the horsh - 30 Mar 2004 21:02
I visited this pub for the first time recently since it has been taken over by a new owner. It is a very small pub but the atmosphere has improved loads. They had a man doing Magic in the pub the night I was there. sounds terrible but attually it was really good He just walked arround the pub showing groups of people tricks.
Tam - 19 Mar 2004 12:17
The kind of pub that your mum and dad would have loved! Friendly locals, gorgeous, polite staff and clean.
cockneystu - 6 Mar 2004 11:40
This is a saucy little pup that has a vibrant atmosphere suited to virtually all ages. They have a particularly popular calendar, that I'm sure will become a collectors item, of ALL of the staff in pin-up poses (only one picture was a let down for me but if you've seen it you'll the one!)

This is a classic no hassels pub with a laid back approach to chucking out. Always a pleasure to visit.

The music nights are great and feature selective musicians that play the likes of Cold Play, Al Green or even Led Zep rather than Bill Hailey.

Paul W - 18 Feb 2004 00:35
A typical village Inn with good quality home cooked food, excellent live music and friendly/attractive staff.
Nice courtyard and garden.
