I have visited this pub on and off because of its location for 40 yrs. It was better as 2 pubs but hey ho thats progress. It is a bit rough and the GK beer is seriously rubbish but it has its charm and the view out of the window is great. Food best avoided though.

I didn't realise that this was a greene king pub, otherwise I wouldn't have gone in. There is no GK signage outside and they didn't sell any GK beers. Only the small print on the menu gave the game away and by then it was too late. Could it be that even greene king pubs realise GK beer is crap? Maybe, or maybe not; I had a pint of some stuff that was sour and had to be changed, the replacement was only just drinkable, so maybe the problem is with GK managers would never seem to have a clue. For those not interested in the beer, this is in a nice position just outside the historic docks (HMS Victory & Warrior) and it's a nice looking building, inside is full of sky tv and fruit machines and some of the regulars looked well dodgy. The food; as previously mentioned looks crap judging by the menu, with the aforementioned Pizza burger taking pride of place. There must be better pubs nearby.

Went in here yesterday and had a very good pint of Workie Ticket from Mordue. Other pump was Greene King IPA. Service was a bit on the slow side. The food seemed OK (Sunday Lunch) but cannot comment on the quality as I was just waiting for a friend and didn't have time to eat. Liked the pub and the atmosphere was OK. Plan to come back again

Greene King pub selling IPA & Speckled Hen. Occupies a prime position overlooking the harbour opposite the HMS Warrior. Has that chain feel, but nothing wrong with it and the bar maid when I was there was very helpful.

My experience of this pub was pretty poor. The bar-boy was slow and borderline rude - he made it seem it was such an effort to serve us. Didnt bother to change a barrel, just said i should have something else.
The food we had was dire. The classy menu included a "pizza burger". Wow.
Locals were pretty rough too.
Aviod!

Fairly good standard Greene King, watched the world go by outside the front with a reasonable pint of I.P.A.

Good pub on the harbour. Had a nice pint of Belhaven.

Lively mock Tudor pub. I was disappointed that you couldn't order a Navy Rum in a pub named after Admiral Anson, who basically founded the Royal Navy as we know it (introduced the first navy uniform, for example). Was told that Greene King, the proprietors wouldn't allow any drink to be sold which they hadn't supplied, and navy rum wasn't on their list. Sort it out Greene King, you useless Bury St Edmunds landlubbers. This is not the spirit that built an empire. Rule the waves? Couldn't run a piss up in a navy pub.

Much better since the change of management and the refurbishment. Both a while ago now. The bitter is still good and the food is the standard Greene King menu.
|
Not sure if Greene King own the place but it was only GK IPA and Speckled Hen on offer, quite a lively fun atmosphere though for a sat nite with a decent jukebox. 6/10

First time back in this pub for a few years and the place certainly seems to have improved. It's nice and tidy, clean and plesantly decorated with an inevitable nautical theme.
There was a suprisingly relaxed atmosphere for a town centre pub on a Saturday night with very nice barmaids and a pretty good pint of Henry's IPA.
During the daytime there is an understandable emphasis on food trade to bring in visitors to the Dockyard and Gunwarf Quays.

We also went to this pub for lunch during our visit to the Historic Dockyard and what a great little find. The food was cheap, of really good quality and freshly cooked (and hot when it arrived at our table). The girl who served us (long dark hair, didn't get her name) was more than helpful and all of the bar staff were really friendly, chatty and happy in their work. I could do with a local like this. Loved it.

We went to the Ship Anson a week ago at lunch time, during our visit to Portsmouth historic dockyard, this pub is very close to the main entrance of the dockyard so we decided to pop in to order some food and a couple of pints.
The pub has a nice exterior and interior too, with lots of prints on the walls, check out the portrait of admiral Anson.
Food was ok (scampi for me, fish and chips for my girlfriend) and very very cheap, really worth the price, and the girl who served us was extremely kind and helpful.
Unfortunately they have only two hand pumps, the ales on were Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen, nothing special but both well kept.
A non pretentious pub with good and very cheap food.

Very rude managers insisting I left right after changing money for machine at bar. Told to go because their licence had ended but door shut behind me ready for the lock in. Tried to enjoy a drink on my own but fell abruptly short.

usual managed dissapointment

Been drinking in this pub for nearly 10 years and think its has an awesome atmosphere. Always very friendly and polite, the food is amazing, you always feel welcome

Lovely pub but never enough staff when busy. Usually only two staff.

Reasonable pub but no cask ales, which is always a downer. Decent food, though.

Popped in here on Saturday afternoon before the Newcastle match and no problems being a Newcastle supporter. Good atmosphere and a young and old mix of both sets of fans. Good bitters and the bacon cheese burger & chips was worth the 6.75 I think it cost, it was 45 minutes wait but this was made clear when ordering. All staff very friendly and helpful. A decent pub for a pre match drink.

Went in before the Pompey v Fulham game and really liked it. As an away fan finding a decent pub where you dont get any bother in Portsmouth can be quite tricky Nice old buiding with a maritime feel which is not surprising seeing where its situated, will definitely head for there next season providing Fulham dont get relegated.

The picture above is not of the ship anson... The pub is busy and always has a good atmosphere especially during the football.. the menu has also just been updated and has a good variety of food available. A no smoking policy is in force in the food area before 3 pm which is good.

pic not quite how i remember it but had a good time before setting off on pub crawl
|
No real ale but apart from that there are worse places to have a drink, most of them seem to be within about half a mile of here!
|
OK food, very poor selection of beer, a bit grotty but near the Royal Docks and better than the offer there. Very pretty on the outside, which is where I suggest you stay unless it's raining stair rods, or there is some other compeling reason to go inside rather than finding somewhere better.
|
Real Ale not alway on, this seen to be normal, but staff will give reason ie poor order last week, its only just got will be back on next day
|
fantastic bar, great grub, even better beer!

Nice friendly footie pub as far as my one visit is concerned. Me and my pal spent most of a lunchtime gabbing with the guv' before scooting off to watch Chelsea play at Fratton park. Decent food, friendly crowd, and within easy reach of the ground by train or cab. Also great to stare out of the window at some of the more historic of our vessels.
