user reviews of Wheatsheaf, Crowborough

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

An attractive weatherboarded house in a sylvan setting with cheerful staff and a convivial atmosphere; Harvey's ales including the rare Dark Mild in good nick. Ten minutes' walk from Crowborough station. Recommended.

Difficult to find, but well worth it when you do! Very friendly landlord and locals. Lovely cosy feel to the pub and interesting layout. Food looked lovely and reasonably priced - unfortunately didnt have time to eat on this visit. Full range of Harveys in good condition.

Fantastic pub with Harveys range in excellent condition. Nice little garden, and a cosy feel to the whole place. I have to agree with SassyB though. The service was surly and downright grumpy, which is a shame. No excuse for it - let's hope they pull their socks up in this area.
misterwoppit - 23 Sep 2011 16:27
Great location and pub has jovial atmosphere full of locals, but the bar service was extremely unfriendly. It seemed to be a great inconvenience for her to serve us, and not even an acknowledgement, much less a thank you when we returned our glasses to the bar upon leaving. I hear the pub has recently been taken over by new tenants, so hopefully they sort the appalling service out.
SassyB - 10 Sep 2011 23:27
Country pub located down a lane that's a little difficult to find. Even some of the locals we spoke to admitted they had only just discovered it. On our early Saturday evening visit, the place was packed and the roaring fire made it feel really hot inside. Outside, parking was difficult. Harveys Best Bitter and Hadlow Bitter were definitely on. The Old Ale & Sussex XX Mild was also advertised. But we couldn't spot that. Friendly place and clearly very popular.
blue_scrumpy - 21 Jan 2011 21:39
Pretty weather boarded Harveys pub
Deceptively spacious inside on different levels with a pleasant garden area
Good selection of Harveys beers in good condition
Friendly staff and fine tasty pub grub with a specials board.
Most enjoyable..
kisstaker - 13 Sep 2010 22:08
The Harveys was good and it was a nice enough looking pub , but bar staff were not friendly or particularly helpful. Food experience disappointing, very limited menu/specials board and no proper eating area, so can't really say it offers anything more than pretty basic bar food. Service absolutely minimal. Was hoping for a good all round experience, no harm in having a limited offering if you do it really well and look after people, but they didn't do either. Won't be going back.
forager - 20 Aug 2010 15:39
sorry nelly0164,

You are quite correct. Even though the Ind Est is nearby, there's a nice looking B&B and a small bridge over a stream across from the pub.

What I meant was, it wasn't the most pleasant walk from the Train Station, to get to the pub.

I can assure you, I still rated the pub very highly out of 10.
Pat_Bateman - 22 Jun 2010 16:04
Astoundingly busy beer festival a few weeks back, some brilliant beers and ciders and really well organised with everyone working bloody hard. Can't wait for the next one.

Noticed the comment from Pat Bateman that the pub is next to an industrial estate - makes it sound like it's right next door, in fac t it's about 50 yards away and it can't be seen or heard, actually you can only see 2 or 3 houses from the pub which is in a really delightful and quiet backwater
nelly0164 - 22 Jun 2010 13:22
Lovely pub with a country feel to it, even though it's not in the country.

Interesting multi roomed layout with a massive fireplace.

Friendly service and Stowford Press on draught.

I tried the burger with onions for the amazing price of 2.50, which was actually pretty tasty. Real chips as well.

It's just a pity about the location. We got off at Crowborough Train Station (which is actually nowhere near Crowborough, at a run down looking place called Jarvis Brook) and were directed to the pub, which turned out to be next to an Industrial Estate.

Still, a great pub and I'd certainly be a regular if I lived in that area.
Pat_Bateman - 21 Jun 2010 10:25
Went here two nights running during their beer festival over the May bank holiday - definitely not to be missed. If you're interested in the guest beers, be quick as the popularity of the event means it goes quick. A few great bands were on too, the place was rammed. Thanks and see you next time!
sussexboy - 3 Jun 2010 22:36
This pub has a good feel: the layout is interesting, the decor authentic, it's a nice looking pub from the outside too. Endearingly, it's quite isolated and off the beaten track. The food was good enough and promptly served, but as the last reviewer described, nothing to write home about. Is it just me or are Crowborough pubs - or Crowborough itself - uninspiring? I might be mistaken on this last point: there are positives about this pub, and I'm looking forward to a return visit this summer, particularly as the outside space looks good.
jpview - 1 Jun 2010 09:27
After all the comments on here about how good the beer is, thought I'd give it a try. Must've had an off day, because the Harvey's Hadlow was pretty poor. :-/ The food was competent, but nothing to write home about. In short, I won't go out of my way to go back.
HereBeBeasties - 15 May 2010 19:25
Great beer & great food
ronmills1 - 13 Apr 2010 15:25
Pleased to see that this pub has suddenly (and justifiably) become so popular with this forum. I add my recommendations purely as a satisfied customer, nearby resident and someone who doesn't get to the pub as ofter as he would like!
TrevorT - 22 Mar 2010 11:08
Further to more recent comments on this thread, I would like to say that I have only posted a review on this one pub, The Wheatsheaf, because quite simply it is the only pub that I regularly visit enough to be able to comment! Really it says it all that myself and others always go back there for more!

I don't like shallow suspicion, it is so unnecessary when people's love of this pub is completely genuine. Bah!
BasiltheBatlord - 22 Mar 2010 07:18
I've visited a few pubs in my time but don't think I've ever had better beer than the Harveys served in the Wheatsheaf. The food is also very good - proper pub food, nothing flash, just good quality and fairly priced. There are very popular beer festivals twice a year, occassional live music nights, a golf society, and even a leek club. It's a little bit hidden away but this traditional English pub is well worth finding. The best pub in the area without a doubt.
Richard.S - 19 Mar 2010 17:59
In fairness henners I have not marked it down at all, I am just suspicious when a pub suddenly gets shot up the ratings by people with little or no history of posting.

I do look forward to my visit and will post honestly.
kevmac - 19 Mar 2010 17:07
This is a good pub, why mark it down if you haven't been there. I been on a few occasions and the beer and welcome has been excellent. They have a good beer festival where they ask the locals what their favourite beers have been, and they try and get them in. Normally would have all the Harveys range in. It is certainly the best pub in the area ( except for youngsters)
Henners - 19 Mar 2010 12:34
It's quite odd how the vast majority off positive reviews this year have been from users who have only ever made one post. This must be a good pub. Must'nt it?
Picasso09 - 18 Mar 2010 23:32
Hmmmmm

Interesting that a lot of reviewers have very limited postings on this site.

I will visit to try for myself but I have doubts on this one.
kevmac - 18 Mar 2010 18:48
Called in on the way through this village had a pint of Harveys beer which was top notch did not eat so no comment on food.
But have to say it looks like a advertising stunt that has pushed this to no.one in the charts,it`s good but like a lot of others Cask & Kitchen being another the best it ain`t. 6/10
flyingnun - 18 Mar 2010 17:18
Jolly nice to see the Wheatsheaf, Crowborough has rocketed to the top from no where (okay, East Sussex).
Amazing!!!!
Still makes a welcome change to the stale, old false, self awarding and positioning of the Cask & Kitchen at Pimlico.
I suppose the landlord and staff there will have to burn the midnight oil on the old steam computer praising their plastic Pimlico palace to beat the Wheatsheaf at the top 40 game.
Anyone for a drink at the Harp?
DEPTFORDDUTCH - 18 Mar 2010 15:41
What a place, great beer, great food and friendly staff. A must visit if you are in the Crowborough area. It has to be the best pub for Harveys Best in Sussex.

tinbumat40 - 18 Mar 2010 15:07
Top pub - and the best in Crowborough by a long stretch! Great beer, great people (both sides of the bar) and great atmosphere. A genuine community local.
toper99 - 13 Mar 2010 17:12
What can I add, this is as good as it gets, food is great, beer is always well kept, Ted and Maggie and the staff are wonderful. my local away from home, born and raised in Crow but now in the US, spend mucho time at the Wheatie when I am over.
wickinstien - 13 Mar 2010 02:03

Best Pub in Crowborough
EvertonFC - 2 Mar 2010 21:16
Excellent Pub, good food, good atmosphere and the best pint of Harveys in Sussex, FACT!
guestme - 2 Mar 2010 20:46
You cannot get better than the Wheatsheaf! Having frequented this wonderful pub for over twenty years, it just gets better and better. Ted and Maggie are the loveliest and most welcoming hosts you could possibly wish for! There is always an excellent range of beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, the food is just superb, fantastic beer festivals as well as evenings with live music. An outstanding and cosy pub where you feel completely at home in the company of both 'locals' and those from further afield. I cannot recommend the Wheatsheaf more highly, I just wish I could get down there more often! :D
BasiltheBatlord - 25 Feb 2010 11:53
Simply the best in Crowborough
lozlis - 25 Feb 2010 11:40
You couldn't ask for a better local pub. Create beer, a warm welcome and fantastic pub grub await you. What more could you ask for!
simnom - 23 Feb 2010 22:29
The best proper pub in crowborough. Great beer good food and always a warm friendly atmosphere
conroyson - 22 Feb 2010 08:58
Great pub, thankfully I live within walking distance. Knocks all other Crowborough pubs into a cocked hat. 4-5 Harveys ales usually available with the odd guest ale. Always a great atmosphere - particularly during music nights/special events. Well worth a visit.
sussexboy - 21 Feb 2010 10:59
Just the best!

Beer quality second to none as is the real 'home cooking'. Great mix of clientel who are all friendly, (most dogs included!). The benchmark to judge all other locals against.

Don't miss it.
jim_mccullough - 21 Feb 2010 10:09
What more could you want from a local? Proper pub with friendly staff and locals - plenty of good quality real ale from down the road (Harveys) with the occasional guest brew from further afield. Well worth a visit if you're in the area, there are warm fires in the winter and a nice garden for those seemingly rare summer days. Check out the Good Beer Guide 2010 page 450.
mattk86 - 21 Feb 2010 00:48
by far the best pub for miles. ted and maggie obviously love what they do. i live overseas and it's the first place i go to.great beer, great food, open hearths, dogs allowed, i've even seen horses and riders welcomed and both their thirsts quenched.a proper pub is hard to find, but here is one.
swickins - 20 Feb 2010 18:33
This is definitely the best pub in Crowborough. Great beer, excellent food and very friendly locals. I would recommend this pub to anyone who was visiting the area.
debbiexx - 20 Feb 2010 18:21
First time back for a while, as always a warm welcome and really good beer, had to rub my eyes - is that Fullers London Porter I see there? Damn fine stuff and a scrumptious Bouillabaise to go with it. Why go anywhere else!
nelly0164 - 17 Feb 2010 10:35
A proper pub with proper beer and proper friendly people .
I am yet to find a pint of Harveys thats better and Ive tried a few !!!
Give it a try - you will not be disappointed .
graham.cole56 - 16 Feb 2010 16:12
We moved house so we could make this our "local" - the best pub in Crowborough - need I say more. Louise Wolf.
highburyvilla - 16 Feb 2010 14:14
Full range of Harvey's ales on offer - good feel to the place too. Definitely worth a visit if you're coming from the station.
pubcollector - 31 Jan 2010 19:41
Missed the beer festival in October but have just popped in to find they now have Deuchars IPA on as a guest beer, courtesy of Harveys no less - the barriers are coming down, time to celebrate! The only beer they don't have on at the moment is Armada, but the Christmas ale is superb - steady, it's just ove 8%!
nelly0164 - 6 Dec 2008 22:37
Lovely old pub tucked away in a leafy lane a few minutes walk from Crowborough station; three separate rooms surround a central bar. There was a cosy looking beer garden outisde too, although we didn't venture out there. That looks a great place to spend a balmy summer evening.

Five Harvey's ales on offer; I sampled the Sussex Best and the Eastbourne Star both of which were perfectly drinkable, although if I'm going to be picky neither was quite in peak condition.

THe regulars generally seemed very friendly and welcoming.
Rich66 - 16 Nov 2008 13:22
Such an excellent little pub - real coal fines in winter, dogs welcome (they even had a dog show a couple of weeks ago), TV in one bar, and the other bar is quiet and secluded. Great beers (Harveys), and frequent guests and ciders. Often have a beer festival going on during summer weekends, with live music. Convivial, welcoming 'country pub' atmosphere on the edge of Crowborough. The small beer garden looks like it was lifted directly from Tolkein's Shire - I can imagine Bilbo Baggins giving his 'Going Away' party under the light-draped tree. There can be no finer place to spend an evening in Crowborough than this.
llykstw - 3 Nov 2008 13:38
We had lunch at the Wheatsheaf last week on our walk from Redhill to Hastings. The beer was excelent, food good, people very friendly.

They do B&B so maybe next time we will sleep there too.
pubramblers - 15 Apr 2008 23:29
Last week here was the most extraordinary New Year's Day I have ever experienced, with somewhere between 100 and 150 extremely good natured customers and staff belting out a selection of songs from 'The Wheatsheaf Songbook' as diverse as Land of Hope & Glory, American Pie, Delilah and Maggie May (Maggie is the landlady, so that may be significant). This pub absolutely throbbed - quite brilliant, book me in for next year - this is apparently an annual event. By the way, they've just put Bonfire Boy back on, terrific pint!
nelly0164 - 8 Jan 2008 17:38
Charming cosy pub on the edge of town with the full range of Harvey's beers all in good nick, a proper pub as they say, with a good garden and sensibly priced proper food. There were 21 real ales on here at the October beer festival, but we'll have to wait til May for the next one. Very friendly.
nelly0164 - 7 Dec 2007 15:35
Probably the finest Pint of Harveys Best served anywhere - bar none! (Even the brewery!)
Great proper pub with good basic food (now Monday to Thursday evenings too) which is not intrusive on those just wanting a liquid intake. If only there were more like this.
anonymous - 11 Jul 2007 15:49
Previous report should have read 'had many excellent pints of Bonfire Boy and Christmas Ale' during November and December. The latest seasonal offering is also terrific - Harvey's 'Kiss'.

Pistol - 14 Feb 2007 10:08
Had many excellent pints of Bonfire Boy and Tom Paine during November and December.
Pistol - 13 Jan 2007 20:47
Visited on a glorious evening, Tom Paine was crystal clear and perfect - have yet to try the food. I don't recal having any substandard pints here.
TrevorT - 21 Jul 2006 19:47
Visited at lunchtime - lovely weather.
One of Harvey's finest ales 'Tom Paine' tasted as if it had been in the pipes overnight.
The barperson was eating crisps while serving beer and the ploughman's lunch had a half-cooked baguette and the butter portions tasted half-rancid.
Pistol - 18 Jul 2006 16:27
Friendly pub with nice beer.
Rich_F - 6 Feb 2006 12:58
visited with a group of friends and found we the staff a little unfriendly.
anonymous - 14 Jul 2005 17:06
A big favourite of mine at lunchtime. (Near where I work) No food on Mondays, but other days it is great and good value. Harveys very well kept at all times. Great staff with a good sense of humour! They have to if I go in there!
Simply a great place to be.
terrybaldwin - 17 Jun 2005 12:04
An oasis in the desert of good pubs that is Crowborough (but see the Cooper's Arms for the other good one). A lovely old boarded building right off the beaten track, with welcoming hosts, good (great) quality Harvey's beer, and good food at lunchtimes. A proper beer drinker's place. Find it!
