Surprisingly empty - but very friendly - on a Friday afternoon. Nice to have a good selection of tables to sit at, just a shame the beer selection is somewhat limited and uninteresting.
One of the better Nicholsons'. Far enough from Borough Market to be quiet even when other pubs in the area are busy. A few real ales on draft, great selection of food dishes that tasted delicious and weren't too expensive, and tables available inside and out. Very impressed.
A bit hidden away which still doesn't keep it from being quite crowded at times. Seems to do a roaring weekend lunch trade. I've also visited on weekday evenings and it's been relatively quiet. A bit on the pricey side but I can always find Timothy Taylor's Landlord on tap and that makes me happy

£4.90 for a pint of bitter!
des48 - 11 Feb 2017 10:08 |
Yes, I went here yesterday and paid £5.50 for a pint of beer. Ridiculous pub.
Went in here last month for the first time. Not a bad pub really. The layout is a bit difficult and it is not a very intimate affair but the Guinness was good and service spot on which seems to becoming a rareity in London now a days! Would return if I was in the area.
This place is alright. Can get pretty rammed at times which means service can be slow, but at least the older fella behind the ramp seems to know what he's doing and does his best to serve those who have been waiting longest first. None of that "who's next?" With him - which always annoys me. It's your bar, you should know who's next if you're doing your job properly!
Outside seats/area are a bonus if the weather is up to it.
Polopony, why accept that sort of behaviour. If he would have tried it with me he would have had back with both barrels.
This people are bullys and will continue to act in this way unless they are fronted out. Complaining on a forum after the event is hardly likely to worry them.
Never in my life have I been spoken to in a restaurant as I was - by the dining room manager - on the evening 10 July 2012. I am a man in my mid-late 50s and was spoken to by this youth of less than half my age in an intimidating and grossly disrespectful way. My advice is to avoid this pub at all costs. Even if you are starving - wait until you get home. Zero out of ten!
Is an okay pub however wasnt that bowed over Was packed on our visit, so went upstairs which was more of a restaurant area. Was fairly empty, and we were ready for an evening meal anyway. The food wasn't bad, took a tad long to come. My biggest gripe was with teh service - a solo barman working. He was serving another table which is fair enough, however he came back behind the bar a couple of times and went about business pretty much ignoring our pressence as we held money in hand. All it takes is a 'be with you in a minute' acknowledging the customer, sounds petty but it goes along way. Not bad on a crawl but a bit too souless for an extended stay
Good choice of Ale's with some unusual one's
Contrary to other reviews I think this is a pub worth searching out if in the London Bridge area. Yes its not very big but does have an outside area with heaters so it makes the pub larger than it is. This was my 2nd visit and the ale choice is very good, 5 different on the evening I came in.
All in all a pleasant pub and as I say is worth a visit especially if you like your ales.
not that bad a pub...seen a lot worse...the ale is good and varied and there's a big outside heated area, but I agree with the other comments....has the ambience of an internet cafe and very little atmosphere...ok if on a pub crawl, but I wouldn't spend all evening here..
Came across this one completely by chance after walking out of London Bridge station, and it was a stroke of luck. I agree with the comments that it comes across more of a cafe-that-sells-beer (Bland FM being piped into the main room doesn't help), but more than does the job for a comparing of snaps of the nearby Golden Hinde. Adnam's Old Ale too!
more a cafe style place than a pub - not for me.
Decent place, on the Dick Whittington ale trail. Not big so can get busy and can be difficult getting to the small bar. Good choice of ales as is with Nicholsons, no complaints on quality. Seating outside but tends to be full of smokers as is the tendancy these days. Happily call in again if passing.
Go in most friday evenings with my work colleagues, we think its a great pub, great selection of beers, and a menu that has food for everyone, the pies are lovely still working our way through the list....Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and the garden is in such a lovely spot, with Southwark Cathedral next door.
Touristy pub close to the bridge, one that we'd walked past before, but with a bit more time on our hands decided to pop in. Pricey and our Adnams was a bit touch and go. However it was packed so they must have something going for them, right place I suppose, but I don't think we would bother in the future.
it looked good when we wanted to go. but then is not so good when they decide to close the kitchen half an hour earlier when they want, they dont let bookings, the bar is dirty and the customers relationship is awful...
strongly recommend dont ever go there. there is a pub much nicer just under the bridge, almost next door...
Too much outside, not enough inside. Overcrowded, overpriced, bad staff and frequent lap-top thefts.
Nice to sit outside in the summer but the inside is cramped adn stuffy. Better pubs in the area.
Very Good pub beer was good and they had a BBQ on which was very nice will visit again soon
A fair pub with a good beer garden. Beer always been good, food a bit greesy. On thurs and friday nights could do with a couple of extra staff to keep the drinks flowing
Reasonable pub, but by no means great. Went on a Wednesday evening and it was busy, and there were a lot of empty glasses that could have been collected. TT Landlord was passable but apparently the Pride was definitely off.
Visited this pub early on a FrIday evening as you would expect both the Pub and Garden areas were heaving with three deep at the Bar. London Pride - Greene King IPA and Whitstable Bay available on Handpump. Pub worth a visit but in quieter times (i would suggest in between the Lunchtime and early evening rush). seems to do a good trade in food. Could do with a Pot Man to keep the tables clear.
Contrary to the majority of previous posts I quite liked it in here, although I didnt eat anything and I had no dealings with the manager. My Landlord was very good and Greene King IPA, Pride and Bloomin Marvellous were also available alongside standard and premium lagers.
I would make the effort to walk down the steps to get to this pub again.
Popped in for brief visit on Saturday - very busy, and certainly not what one would term a locals' pub as it seemed to be filled with tourists sampling the food. However good beer range (think it's a Nicholson's boozer), and will definitely try again soon.
Irish bloke behind bar...is he the Landlord? Very rude bloke. Not a great pub, thinks it is better than it is.
Popped in here a few times when up in London last weekend. Didn't eat, so can't comment, but the Tim Taylor landlord was very well kept, and the staff seemed friendly enough. We thought it was a fairly decent boozer, and suprissed about so many adverse comments on here - maybe there has been a recent change of Management?
Compared to many of the reviews I found this pub perfectly satisfactory. My pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord was very good, and so was my plate of Lincolnshire sausage and mash (which was good value, certainly for the area, at 5.95). Service was prompt and pleasant enough, and the toilets were clean. Either significant improvements have been made over the last month or so, or perhaps some of the commenters go looking for trouble?
Landlord, Pride, Doom Bar and the autumn ale was Everards Equinox. Latter tasted a bit strange, almost like cider. I had decided to give up on it and left it on a shelf while I went to the gents but was surprised that it had been collected. Fits in with the other comments on here.
God I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that kitchen, must be like an episode of Chucklevision. The landlord's ineptness definitely worth a visit for entertainment value. He's my favourite waste of dna, love him xx
This pub is very nice from the outside and is fine for a quick pint as long as they can get your order correct!! For food I'd say don't bother! I have eaten there twice and both times they have got our order wrong (Which I'd say wasn't that tasty either.)
I was appalled when after highlighting to the waiter that he had brought me the wrong food he walked over to the customer that had received my food took their plate (which they had already started tucking into) and placed it in front of me! I guess the bonus was that I didn't have to put ketchup on my chips as the previous customer had already done this for me, thanks guys!!!
On the second visit (Im a glutton for punishment!) we ordered a vegetarian meal (cheese on toast) which the first time was brought as a beef sandwich and then secondly a chicken one! How they could get cheese on toast wrong, I cannot imagine, its hardly gourmet!! Our lunch in the end was the same chicken sandwich minus the chicken!!
After complaining to the very rude manager who seemed to think that this was our fault we decided to make a hasty exit! If it wasnt for the very lovely bar staff our lunch would have been a disaster.
On conclusion Id say avoid this pub unless youd like the Fawlty Towers experience? (Basil is alive and well!!)
My colleagues and I thought this pub was a great find - close to London Bridge but never too busy to find a seat at lunchtime. And now we realise why that is...
We've been 4 or 5 times and on at least 3 occasions were given an incorrect food order. The last time it took 3 goes to get the right order and boy was it not worth the hassle! Food is well below average, although they seem to be able to cope with oven chips OK.
The landlord deserves special mention for being so incredibly rude - even giving change seemed to be too much time wasted on the customer.
One of the staff (he knows who is!) is an absolute diamond, but the place doesn't deserve him.
This pub has a great outside area with plenty of heating and could so easily be wonderful. Sadly it is horribly let down by the food and the incredibly rude manager.
We were there recently for lunch and although it was full of suits it could have been good. However they got the meals badly wrong. Chicken breast with rarebit turned out to be melted cheese on chicken. The vegetarian with us order Welsh Rarebit and initially got a beef sandwich. After sending it back she got a chicken sandwich with melted cheese and then finally after a long delay we got the sandwich back again without the chicken.
When we talked to the manager the distinct impression he was trying to give was that it was our fault, we shouldn't be so fussy and anyway we should be grateful for the opportunity to be in his pub. Some (1) of the staff are friendly but unless you enjoy being in an episode of Fawlty Towers you should avoid.
The sausages were very dry and burnt, half of our tables dinner arrived once every one else had finished eating.
Staff were very rude, when complaining about the dried burnt sausages, I was told by the waitress that it was not her problem, it's the kitchens and then when speaking to the manager, he then told me to change my tone.
I will never go there again.
Astonishingly noisy and overheated. It seems to be tryign to be the equivalent of the teenage high street lager-swilling cattle-barns for thirty-somethings.
Music too loud, so everyone shouts. If you want to drink expensive lager while watching office temps shout at each other over a plate of cheesy chips, this is your place.
Popped in saturday after a visit to the London Bridge experience. It was really busy but then it was raining very hard. It was very noisey, too noisey to hold a conversation. A few good ales on offer. Service a bit iffy and had to ask for a full pint rather than 3/4 plus head. No complaints about the ale but not the place to go if you want a quiet beer.
Didn't find it as bad as all that, not even close. The choice of ales is a little smalle, but they are regularly changed. The outdoor area is heated in the colder months, and superb in the summer. They do have a tendancy to close as soon as the punters start diminishing, and take their licened hours very seriously, but that's pretty common in the area I think.
Had a very pleasent evening there only last night, and the "chilli puff" bad snacks are incredibily more-ish!
This could be such a great pub, which is so frustrating. It has a great terrace, which is well heated and comfortable. The bar area is well kept, but that's where it stops. The loos smell so bad that you want to wretch, the staff can't speak English and are rude, and the music is so loud that it's impossible to conduct a conversation unless you want to bellow at your friends all night. Ask them to turn it down a notch and you will get a very frosty response. The food is reasonably priced, but is hit and miss. OK selection of lagers. If you're foolish enough to want to drink in there after 1030, you're in for a shock. At 1029 the music stops, the terrace heaters and games machines are switched off, the lights come up, and the rude service gets distinctly ruder. The pub officially has the traditional opening times, though?! If you fancy a challenge, try staying until 1120 - it's hillarious. SORT IT OUT, MUDLARK! You're as bad as the Old Thameside round the corner for staff (avoid that pub like the plague). With good bar staff who actually make you feel welcome, and clean bogs this could be a very good boozer. A rating of 4 is generous.
awful pub awful beer. nuff said
I was standing at the bar waiting for a pint when one of the bar staff motioned to me as if to ask if i was being served. I politely referred to a couple of ladies that had been waiting longer than me. All i got in response was "well f*ck you then" and he walked off.
If this wasnt bad enough the garbage 1920's jazz music they pipe through is sooo bad it makes you want to put your own hand down your own throat and pull out your own intestines...as does the food in this joint.
This pub is just as sh!t as the thameside and the Anchor - avoid.
Slightly different experience from previous posts - found the bar staff ok and a decent range of beers on draft. Suprisingly, not as expensive as quite a few pubs local to this one and quite packed (although it was a Friday evening after work). The gents did have a foul smell though..
Bit of a hole really, stuck to the bottles as I rarely risk the beer in these type of places. Not helped by the large amount of dog shit in the pato area.
Pub in good location and on the surface with pleasant interior but badly let down by the staff - we were told on entering the pub at 5:30 on a Sunday afternoon that it was closing at 6. When we insisted that we only wanted one we were reluctantly served but made to feel very unwelcome by the rude staff. Whatsmore the 15+ people that came in to the pub in the next 30 minutes were all sent away. I'm surprised they are able to make a profit with such short opening hours and such rude staff.
This pub stinks - full of G*nads. Stops serving at 10:30 too - what a joke in christmas week.
Turned up at this pub at half past 10 in a big group and the bar staff managed to speak enough English to say the bar was closed.
Not welcoming and and full of dodgy clientele.
Avoid
Squalid! Stinking toilets, sticky froor, rubbish everywhere. Outside the ashtrays were overflowing and empty glasses covered the tables.
Cute, tucked away. Quite grubby and uncomfortable but I do like for wine after work.
I STILL HAVE NIGHTMARES ABOUT THIS PUB, THE FOOD IS TOTAL GARBAGE, I WOULD NOT FEED MY PET DOG THE STUFF MADE HERE!!
anonymous - 17 Sep 2007 16:24 |
WENT TO THIS PUB ONLY THE OTHER WEEK AND OREDERED A PINT OF FOSTERS, THIS WAS THE WORST FOSTERS I HAVE EVER TRIED. STAFF ARE RUDE AND SPEAK LITTLE ENGLISH. FOOD WAS AWFUL, I ORDERED A CHIICKEN BURGER AND CHIPS AND IT WAS REVOLTING.. *** DONT EAT AT THIS PLACE***
I will never go back to the Mudlark, I will however be back to McDonalds which do much much better food and have good staff. Sorry Mr Mudlark, try cleaning your beer lines and sorting you food out.
anonymous - 17 Sep 2007 16:17 |
average tourist trap - suprisngly had a mild available - but so friggin cold you couldnt taste anything - so just for display puropese only ?maybe they cant actually shift it ? or is there a complete imbecile in charge of the cellar ?
After reading the last few reviews I decided to take some visiting American tourists to The Mudlark. What a mistake!! The place is filthy. It was the worst food we had in London all week. One of the orders was forgotten so five of us were served our food and the sixth person had there food served after we were finished. The FAMOUS fish platter had ran out (this was on a Monday at 5pm).The food is obviosly microwaved, the deserts were over sapped and rock hard on the bottom. As for the beer- the London Pride you couldnt see through the glass the IPA ran out after 1 pint the other bitter was also "off" leaving only 1 choice left which was awfull. This was such a shame as they were very impressed with the choice of pubs and food in London, they had a great week in London, this was a big let down
Great little pub. Fab BBQ
anonymous - 14 Aug 2007 15:10 |
Surprisingly quiet for a South bank pub near the Thames Path. Typical Nicholson's pub - nothing special, but served a reasonable enough pint of Landlord.
Went to the Mudlark last friday with colleagues from my office,Oh what a night! the place was absolutely heaving and everyone was in a great mood and having fun, what a sociable pub, the beer garden was great to sit in as some of the people I was with smoke,(who said the pubs would be dead with the smoking ban) there was a great BBQ,try the burgers there lovely, they also had full menu on so one of my friends had fish and chips which they said was great, no wonder they are famous for fish. Staff are friendly and kept clearing the table keeping it clean and tidy. Great pub we all had such a Brilliant time we are all going back again this Friday. So if your anywhere near London Bridge get yourself in there its under the bridge next to Southwark Cathedral.
Went to this pub after I received a leaflet outside the London Dungeon. Sat outside with my husband and little girl. Had lovely chicken salad and hubby had a pint of real ale. He said it was great. Lovely food and good service and clean. The view from beer garden over the river was nice. Would definately go again. Toilets a bit small though (for changing the little one)
Used to work there a few years ago. the pub was always busy, we had a good bunch of staff & punters. tthe staff changed quite frequently back then. I have been back recently & found the pub to be pretty quiet. It's not the worst but not the best. The food does leave a lot to be desired but you can have a giggle.
OK for s swift pint, forget it if you're looking for anything else. Beers are reasonably kept, and the place is clean and smart enough, but it lacks character. Also, can I just point out that although the menu is the same as Horniman's, the food isn't any better. Ploughmans without cheese or ham? Get a grip.
Slightly perplexed by the warm reviews for this place, I think it merits lukewarm at best. Not particularly unpleasant, not particularly anything really. Had all the charm of a Yates pub in Bracknell, which is perhaps unsurprising since it sits at the foot of a thoroughly unprepossessing office block and Bracknell has more than its fair share of those. Having said that, other customers seemed happy, and two small boys were pulling faces at people as they ate their Yorkshire Puds. If I'd been hungrier I'd have been forced to order a "Steck Sandwich" (sic) from the menu.
Went in during weekday lunchtime, good beer selection, food very reasonable in quality and price. Bar staff probably the most miserable I've met this year, not rude just expressionless, no please/thank you. GET A GRIP!
A great place to drop into after a hard days touristing. I found it by accident when the Barrowboy and Banker was closed. I've spent many a happy hour sat outside in the late May sunshine and last winter we came in after our division 2 football side had been beaten by Charlton. The barman was great and seems up for a chat with anyone who will spare the time. It remains on my list of pubs to pop in when in London - I'll be back!
AngeK - 31 Jan 2006 17:22 |
Nice surroundings and good food (which is odd given that they have the same menu as the Horniman and the food there is bad). Good selection of beers to. Prices ok for the area.
Neat tidy and attractive pub. Called in last Monday afternoon round about 3:30 for a quick jar and to check on the status of the final Ashes test to find the place empty barring an old bloke with a pint mug on a stool right in front of the telly. "If we're still in at close of play tonight I think we stand a chance" says the old bloke. Had to explain that as it was the last day of the test we stood a very good chance. "Oh! Why don't the bloody Aussies concede then? Sky'll ruin this when they get their hands on it!". Repeated the same refrain exactly to a couple of suits who followed us in later. Bless him!
Deserves more custom (just don't think a lot of people know it's there). We'll go back.
Another place that's recently had a 'refurb'. Shame, as I always liked it as it was. This is the sad evidence of pubs chasing the corporate pound - over-priced (to pay for the refurb, obviously). The floorboards are nice though...
decent pub which looks all the better after a bit of a makeover. Selection of beers is good, not extensive - but always good to have an ale! Didn't eat but will do next time as the food looked and smelt like good pub nosh. If I'm in that part of town again, I'll drop in again
Popped in after a long walk with friends. A few of us meet up every other weekend for a walk along the Thames followed by a pint of proper beer and a Sunday roast. We'd never been in the Mudlark before though and we loved it! Proper ales and nice traditional food that went down well after a long walk in chilly weather! Recommend it.

Popped in here with my girlfriend just before Christmas for a few festive tipples and a bite to eat. I had spent most of the afternoon shopping at the nearby Borough market and was relieved to find such a laid back and comfortable pub. A mere stones throw from the banks of the River Thames, this place oozes traditional pub charm and boasts a great range of cask-conditioned ales.
Our intention was to stay for no more than one drink, however, three hours later we found ourselves glued to the same spot beside the open fire! After the fourth drink we thought it wise to order some food; I ordered the Steak & Ale Pie, which was delicious! The only miserable part of the evening was the prospect of battling home on the tube with all of our bags. Any concerns were put to bed after the sixth trip to the bar however, when we decided to catch a cab!!

Love this pub to bits!!!! Great atmosphere. Worked there for a while and had a wicked time! Not the most organised pub, but the bar-man, who is allllways either working or drinking there( or more often than not, both!), is the most fun! Very city-type of clientele, but they are all up for a good drinking sesh! Do It!

Basic but accommodating pub, with meals from around 3 per head.
