Arrived at 1:30 on Sunday. Unfortunately, it was the day of the Leicester Marathon, so the pub was pretty busy, and the three young men doing front of house were on the bar, taking and delivering orders, etc. They explained that the kitchen was backed up with orders, and could n`t take further orders for about 20 minutes. I drank my Everards Tiger, which was good, and we were told that they had run out of roasts, so we ordered alternatives. Given how busy they were, the food arrived quickly, and was piping hot and tasty. Overall, the food and beer were good, and the staff were apologetic and attentive, the pub itself inviting and homely, so all in all, despite the problems, a good experience, and I shall visit again when I`m in Leicester.

Thought the Everards Flight of 3 1/3 Beers was very good . Standard Everards pub .

Very nice and all that but a bit....boring and feels as though it's been planned out within an inch of its life by suits.
A good Everards range is on offer and my three beers was top notch, and it was pleasing to see other breweries' beers on, such as White Horses's Village Idiot.
But I couldn't help feeling that this place lacked a bit of soul.

This Everards pub has a fairly impressive exterior. But the interior is not quite so attractive. It is a single room with a mixture of booths, sofas and tables in an open area near the bar. The ale range was remarkably similar to the previous 2 Everards pubs we had been to and starts to get a little boring after a while - Everards Original, Tiger, Sunchaser, Beacon & Elixir & Ironbridge 48 Special West Coast IPA. The latter was on in all of our first 3 pubs, despite being a guest beer! Cider was Westons Traditional Scrumpy. Their Country Perry was also on. A little disappointed by the drinks range. But worth a try if you haven't been in any other Everards establishments.

Excellent food, incredibly tasty and huge portions. Had the burger, friend had nachos. They had the Everards range on, as well as Titanic Mild and a B&T beer. Attracts a discerning clientele, and has a good mixture of people from pensioners to students.

@ All_Hail_The_Ale
Not quite right on presumption of who I am... but oh well... It's still seems like a lovely boozer to me! I had a Sunday roast there two weeks ago, lovely grub, reasonable price and the Old Hooky tasted bloomin lovely!
Cheer up All_Hail_the_Ale!

The guest Burton Bridge Damson Porter was turning, but the Everards Sleighbell was on good form.

Interesting to note the most recent comment below...
Personally, I'm always a bit dubious when a pub re-opens after being very bad and suddenly a new BITE user appears with a name like 'Alefanatic' and posts a glowing review of the place on the day they sign up without posting comments on ANY other pubs whatsoever.
Presumably if they really were fanatical about the ale they'd have visited (and posted on) a few other hostelries, both within Leicester and beyond.
Sadly this is not the first time we've seen this damage limitation attempt on behalf of Everards houses - if you're going to do it at least have the decency to try and make the posting look authentic, don't insult the intellect of the people who use this site!
That said, I will be sure to pop in before the end of the week and check the state of play for myself ... I will not be holding my breath in expectation of any significant inmprovement though.

The Marquis Wellington is amazing again! Finally! It had been stripped of any character by previous owners but the two young chaps running it now really are doing amazingly! It's busy, the ale is great, (6 to choose from) loads of continental lagers, the food is really good and not too pricey. Can't say enough good stuff about it really! I'm thrilled top have a descent pub on London road again. Top work boys!

Undergoing refurbishment again - will be re-opening again soon under the management of the ever-so-sensible company.
Hopefully they'll return it to the great pub that it was before the previous (disastrous imho) refurbishment.
|
Most recent visit yielded Bath Ales Golden Hare in unsaleable condition (thick yellow haze you couldn't see through, more vinegar than you'd put on your chips) and a decidedly twangy Everards Flourish with serious haze ussues as well.
Third time in a row we've encountered unacceptably poor ale quality in here, and the pricing for the undrinkable muck is ridiculous - 2.80 for a 3.8% beer which has gone off is, frankly, criminal.
Everards need to send a team in to cellar train the morons running this place, and it certainly has nop place in the GBG as things stand.
For shame!

A large open plan pub which has obviously had a refurbishment recently presumably to attract the local student population. Nothing wrong with that, it just seems a bit soulless to me. There's a good choice of ales, and its an interesting building, so a pleasant enough place to spend some time in.

Walked up to this Good Beer Guide pub in March while visiting Leicester for the beer festival. Quiet and clean looking pub. 9 handpumps sounds great, but only a couple of Everards on. No problem with the Everards Original we had. Very good condition, but young lad said they were waiting for deliveries. This was not the first time we had heard that reason for lack of choice that day.

The latest refurbishment has utterly killed any vestige of character this place once had; where once was a pleasant, fairly traditional pub interior one now finds oneself faced with just another soulless, identikit bar.
When I come into an Everards house (which I generally try to avoid whenever possible) I don't want to be confronted by cream sofas, what appears to be laminate flooring (?!?!), beige and mushroom walls (all the wonderful Wellington quotes have been painted over) and pretentious, self-obsessed, student-type bar staff.
Equally, I do not expect to be charged 2.80 for a decidedly lacklustre pint of 3.8% York Guzzler and the "pleasure" of drinking in such a generic environment.
Still, at least the gents have been left in their pristine glory eh?
Popular with students apparently, and they're welcome to it.

High quality Everards pub. Bar staff talked enthusiastically about cask ale, which was good quality. Very comfortable all-rounder.
|
used to be a trad looking old boozer, however the refurb has given the place a new lease of life - i like it, a much better food and wine menu now available.
|
Hot off the press... another refurb! The Welly has become a Dining Emporium, Cocktail Bar and Coffee Lounge!
Sofas, armchairs and CREAM carpet! Only one guest ale (which wasn't ready for tonight's re-opening), Everads' standards and fewer lagers. Wide selection of (pricey) wine.
What will the regulars make of this incarnation???
Rate 7 for brightening the old place up and offering fair trade coffee but fear it will prove too expensive for this part of town.
|
Definitely a vast improvement since the 'refurb'. (It's just struck me how rare it is to say that a 'refurb' has improved a pub these days!) Better range of lagers and ales, polite, friendly staff and an agreeable atmosphere making it all too easy to while away the hours. Well done!
|
New licensee over summer holiday (claims to have another pub in Loughborough)
Selection of real ales has improved - general two or three guest beers as well as Everards - and well kept, though mostly only on for a week so how much damage can they do in that time?
Plus point - they've out most of the tat but have also taken away some of the photos and left bare walls with picture lights.
Now very brightly lit and being turned into a "London Boozer" (Licensee's description!) Why a London Boozer???
|
I went there yesterday evening and had a chat with the owner and the manager. It seems it has recently been taken over, and contrary to past comments, there doesn't seem to be any clutter, and certainly no blue brothers by the gents toilet.
There was a large selection of lager and cask ales available, and the ones I tried were spot on. The lager was clean and crisp, and the cask ales were spot on. There was a big screen to show sports, which unlike other pubs, the picture was very vivid and sharp.
I'll definitely be going here again. If you want to go out for a beer where it is looked after and kept properly, then this is the place for you.

I went yesterday as I had been recommended the sunday roast there. For my first time there, I was very impressed. Nice chilled atmosphere, music at a level which could be heard but still spoken over, staff very friendly, drinks very reasonable, food was great, very cute beer garden, the decor is cool, like a traditional old pub, which I like - anyone can build a lloyds bar, a yates, etc - I like character, and this pub certainly has it! 10/10 from me.
|
Deeply average all round, and could be so much better with very little effort - yes, de-clutter!
|
It just gets worse - there's so much clutter. Do we really need 'steaming' water in the fake water tap and giant butterflies.
It has one random guest beer otherwise it's just Everard's and the usual Guinness and lagers.
Friendliness of staff? Very variable.
Yes, it is handy for the university - if the Criterion or Swan & Rushes were as close the Marquis wouldn't stand a chance. Perhaps I'll transfer to DMU.
|
S'alright for a quiet pint between lectures if you don't fancy the union but depressing in the evening (the karaoke is DIRE, last time I watched only three tuneless fat Leicester women sang, the rest were by the Karaoke bloke himself) and the service ain't exactly speedy. Incidentally, there's a large and very lifelike statue of the Blues Brothers near the (pleasent) gents loos. They scare me so very much.

Ratings out of 10 Beer: good Sunchaser 7 Atmosphere/decor: ok 5 Cleanliness: clean enough 5 Staff: welcoming 6 Clientele: Mixed/no chavs 6 Food: very good steak 7 Sum up: class as a good pub, on this saturday lunchtime

Went down hill faster than Franz Klammer when taken over by the Old Horse.
If you like your real ale served up with trinkets and tat this is probably the right place for you. No longer a 'good' pub
