A proper pub frequented by proper people. and you don't get many like that any more! There are two pool tables (which don't work on the "put your money down" basis - you need to write your name on the board) and a couple of screens for showing the footie. Quite a few QPR fans drink here so it can get a bit busy on match days but not uncomfortably so. Bog standard drink selection but the staff are friendly.

Whats your opening bid there Spotcheck ? Those pool tables must be worth a bob or two for their antique value alone. Let me know when you do buy the place. It will take a lot more than Martin Egan and his Mr. Muscle to clean this place up. I was here a couple of weeks back and it hasn't changed much in seven odd years since I was in it last - just a bit grubbier. Good pint though.

far too ra,come on martins sat with ian ,lets move on you dinosaurs

I believe this place is up for sale. How much?
|
You get spit, you get sawdust and you also get a bunch of Father Jack Hackett lookalikes sat at the bar. If you're familiar with the pubs in this area then you'll already know if this sort of place appeals to you. I'd rather go to this place than somewhere like the Bushranger, but others will violently disagree.

I still find it strange that you are so passionate about one pub and a pub to be honest isnt really that good there are several pubs that are much better if you are unfortunate enough to find yourself in the bush yes the local are friendly in 'o' Donoghues but the pub itself is really nothing to shout about to be honest mate Im still just as sceptical but if this is what rocks your boat best of luck to you
juzza - 20 Dec 2006 12:30 |
in answer to juzza no its not the only pub in the bush that i have had a pint in but to be honest its definitely the friendliest i have been in the brackenbury , the shepherd and flock , the prince and the white horse but only see fit to post on here when i think i see an unfair comment or comments , sure it does need some attention but at least it seems to be moving in the right way
|
As has the comment below my previous one
juzza - 16 Dec 2006 14:59 |
The only thing that leaves me sceptical about you boydevil is the only pub that you have commented on is this one that to be brutally honest points to some connection with the place eg you work here or are pals with the manager etc Ive said myself that the locals deserve better than what they were getting but you leave yourself wide open for sniping from people by just the fact that the only pub youve commented on your BITE is this one

This is a great pub, friendly, slightly older crown, very good pool tables. It could with a redec, mens toilets arent great, I have not seen any trouble, or signs of trouble in the half a dozen times I have been there. Damien the manager would stamp that out straight away. Havent tried the food. Beer is excellent, had one dodgy pint, as soon as i mentioned it, the pint was wipped out my hand and replaced with a perfect one. It is a bit spit and sawdust, but excellent value. Easy to get on the pool table.

dont you just hate people who hide behind anonymous reviews just have the guts to come in and see damian ,new manager , who has turned the pub around with good entertainment inc ken doherty who enjoyed his night down at the pub , any probs will be resolved by damian im sure and no im not his best mate just someone who drinks in the pub and enjoys it
|
Are you the new manager or his best mate because this is the worst pub in this area and that takes some doing.
anonymous - 18 Nov 2006 12:36 |
strangely enough after reading previous comments i can now inform that the pub has a new manager , a guy called damian , who knows what he is doing and the staff have been replaced .You are now guaranteed of a smile when you come through the doors and i have tested all the pints ,really good night lol , and the quality is now top class .The clientele are friendly and i have not saw any fighting or crims since i have been there , to all previous doubters give the place another go , you just may be surprised
|
My last comment was deleted so I will put a new one on I totally agree with with the comment below the sad thing is this pub has masses of potential if they sort out external and internal maitenence and get a manager/owner who cares about this place enough it could be a gold mine the locals (the majority are a lovely bunch of people) deserve better!!!

Versatile and earthy, O'Donoghue's is like a well-kept wine. If it had been mashed from sour Kerry grapes and aged in the rectum of Chris Moyles for 15 years.
The pool area has a nice couple of tables, if a little over-exposed and dominated by a group of people who are literally a ticking time bomb of repressed violence. Fights often break out over whose turn it is to have the brain cell.
The back area is even worse - God help you if you speak with anything other than a county brogue (except Dubliners who are treated like the scum of the earth) - a seedy stage with broken railings, fag ash everywhere and the all-pervading stench of despair fills your heart with sorrow. Respite involves toilets with leaky cisterns, pints of Fosters mixed with cleaning fluid and staff with the sense of foreboding horror sullenly going about their work. After serving this lot for god knows how long you would look like that too.
All thanks to a landlord that seemingly doesn't give a toss about his pub and just wants a wendy house with a bar for all his mates to attept to drink themselves out of their ever-present misery.

I used to live next door and therefore frequent this place more often than I should've really. It has a certain something about it despite the decor being crap, the clientele being mainly alcoholics/pissed builders/ageing crims and just downright nutters. So I'm not sure why but I quite liked it. The John Prescott look-a-like landlord was pretty moody and his wife more than abrasive but I guess that's what happens after years of dealing with the aforementioned clientele. Have seen some really cracking fights outside too. What this place is is a genuine Irish bar though. Not a mock-Orish place like O'Neills, etc. The atmos at the weekends is electric and the bands, although they all play the same songs (Dirty Old Town, The Fields of Athenry) tend to raise the roof. Mainly old duffers dancing though. Worth a visit but try and keep yourself to yourself. And don't bet on the games of pool, everyone's bl**dy good and most will swindle you.

.........live music here is good but a better atmosphere up the road at O'Neill's,
anonymous - 17 Dec 2005 08:02 |
I went to this pub last night with some mates because one of their friends was playing here. The music was great - but that's all. The landlord was sulky and unpleasant, and sat at the bar doing nothing while we were being served; the barman (just the one) had a face like a smacked arse, and the general atmosphere was dismal. Some drunk Irishman letched over my mates, under the facade of trying to sell us a raffle ticket of some sort (though there seemed to be no other competition than the darts match played by a couple of fat, loud-mouthed drunkards). There was no Stella on tap, so I ordered a pint of Kronenbourg which smelt strongly of sulphur. The worst pint I have ever had, and still not at all worth the (admittedly cheap) 2.40 I paid for it. I shall never be going back, and it was universally agreed by our party that it would not be a place at which the rest of us would choose to gig.
|
I abhor this pub, although the live music here is great and the beer is cheap(ish). The landlord is incredibly foul-mouthed and gives the impression that he couldn't care less if he's offensive towards you or your guests. Not a place to take the mother that's for sure.
|
Saw the tones there the other night , packed and lively , with the bar well staffed . one complaint , only one set of toilets for such a large pub

Whoops, my review below was meant for the nearby unlisted Shepherd and Flock, so please disregard.
O'Donoghues is actually a large pub with a couple of pool tables in the front (last year they actually roped in Ken Doherty to play people for a fiver) and a stage area out the back where I've seen Madness tribute bands and QPR legend Stan Bowles give a Q&A. It's all aimed at the older punter, but full credit to them for putting on entertainment rather than just letting people fall asleep in their Guinness.
|
Check the o'donoghues name on every inch of the carpet! To clarify o'donoghues is a large pub.
