Goodness knows how this pub won W Sussex Pub of the Year, I can only think they voted for themselves, just as I feel the other reviews here have been written by the landlord/staff. Admittedly from the outside it looks like an interesting old place, indeed the main room is, but its put over to 'meal' use so you cant sit there for a drink and are thus forced into a small, smelly area next to the toilets, which isnt pleasant. As for the toilets themselves, horrid. How can a place keep running with such an old, unkempt and frankly nasty facility. Then there's the restaurant staff - we were told in no uncertain terms by a large blonde woman that we would have to wait and wait we certainly did. She could have said it in a more friendly and welcoming way, by way of apology, but no, it was a threatening snarl. Again no apology when she took our order and another expression of superiority with a haughty "what do you want". My partner asked for his meat to be very well done, but it arived a pink mush, which needed to be sent back, again with no apology. Horrible place and horrible service.

The Star Inn @ Rusper........ recently crowned West Sussex Pub of the year, and I am not at all suprised. The Landlord is exremely likeable and keeps his beer well. The staff always look as if they are enjoying themselves and this translates to a great atomosphere. After eating there a number of times it is clear that the kitchen team are very good at what they do, good selection of meals, very well presented and brilliant flavours.

Nice atmosphere pub, strange layout of rooms inside. Although my last visit was with a group of ramblers and we sat in the beer garden!

This pub can get busy at weekends. Good food and a varied menu with some greek specials on (the landlord is Greek and a real diamond). Staff are friendly. There is a fairly large dining area and reasonably priced menu (considering it's a countryside pub.) A smallish sized sun terrace garden to the rear. As a beer drinker this pub is second to none for it's Fullers London Pride, kept to perfection. A great pub for a quiet drink in the week but does get busier as the weekends approach. The Sunday roast, (food after 6pm) is great.

What a lovely friendly pub. Excellent selection of drinks and fantastic food. The food is a bit pricey but par for the course in this area. The atmosphere is very warm and friendly with a warm welcome from all the staff. Beer is served at perfect temperature. Its very busy so booking is recommended at weekends. Well worth a visit

Went in there on a Sunday afternoon. Most of the pub is taken up by a large restaurant area with just a small bar. The bar was occupied by several over fifty, over weight men making out of date racist jokes. They thought they were being funny but weren't, they appeared to be trapped in a time warp. I sat in the beer garden and thankfully the planes from Gatwick drowned out any drivel coming from the bar. Won't be going back, far better pubs than this in the area.

Fantstic pub ,great food and the beers are plentiful and cheap !

We use this pub every Sunday after going to the Rusper Sussex Car Boot Sale. The atmosphere is relaxed and there are no large TV screens or Juke Boxes! There is usually 4 good real ales including a regular well kept London Pride. The food is always excellent and the Sunday lunches are good value. The pub dates back to the 15th Century and the low ceilings and beams give the authentic touch of a genuine village pub. Well worth a visit!

Popped in again late last night - probably the friendliest landlord in the area - the beer was excellent - a choice of London Pride, Spitfire, Sussex & Abbot Ale

Dull, dull, dull. I liked the look of this place but went in, looked for a nice pint of cider, turned on my heels and left! No decent ales either. Unimaginative pub with a towny feel

Me and my friends went there last night for a meal and all we could find wrong with the pub was the staff poor service. It took them over 20 mins to serve us, no smile nothing, we didn't even bother with pudding. Clearly the waitress on last night didn't know how to take a joke. The food however was lovely, slightly over portioned but good value for money. I'd go back for the food, not the service.

Very unfriendly place to vist. Staff are moody and misreable and it has a 'has been' feel to it. Straw mats, paper napkins and dirty wine glasses compliment the reasonable but over portioned food. We had a poor visit here yesterday and will not be returning in the near future.

Have been visiting the star for about 4 years. Can't believe there would be a BNP meeting in this remote little village - very strange venue - also strange that virtually same comments left about another local pub. Don't believe that comment at all. The manager of the star is hospitable and accomdating. Friendly atmosphere, FANTASTIC food at good prices. Always busy !!!! Definately my number 1 pub !

They had a BNP meeting at The Star Inn, Horsham Road, Rusper, Nr Horsham, West Sussex, on July 31st 2007 and I have heard, they have had other BNP meetings in the past, at the pub.
I'm not supporting a pub that believes in supporting racism and I advise others not to do so, too.

Visited lunchtime today - busy with warm friemdly atmosphere - Spitfire excellent - many compliments being paid about the food. Only had a snack but will be returning soon for a full meal. Strongly recommended if you like a traditional pub with good beer and food.

My friends and i have been coming to this pub for years. Food is reasonable at good prices. Nice pub but maybe not over friendly.

Going down hill fast, a real shame as it used to be so good in here - Staff hardly know you're there and definate rough feel to bar. what happened to the friendly attentive staff (the ones that smiled!)

Food not good. Service just as bad. No wonder the Plough along from this gets all the business.
