Queens Head, Hammersmith

back to pub details

user reviews of the Queens Head, Hammersmith

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I visited yesterday for the first time in 45 years of drinking, & was quite surprised that I'd not been before!
It's a nice pub, I suppose, but nothing to get too 'country pub' excited about. Those reviewers who use that phrase probably don't 'use' the real country that often?
£4.50 for a pint of ESB is steep to me; but the place was civilised, quiet & pleasant at 3.30pmish.
I can tell, though, that it must get crammed with wanky West London, yuppy bourgeoisie in the evenings! :-)
So, pros 'n' cons, as ever!

renzarov - 26 Mar 2016 10:18
Just re-opened Oct 2015 after renovations. Ten years ago, the charm of the Queen's Head was that it was essentially a country pub in Hammersmith, albeit a rather large one. There was an enormous dried hop along the bar, and the old timber framing was used to good effect. Two renovations on, and that has been lost. Half the seats are now tall stools, the rest Euro-printed coulourful designs which won't look good in a year or so. There is now techno musak. Bright blue is the colour behind the bar, de rigeure. The food used to be all right for a pub, I suppose, and remains all right, but no better, I suppose. This 'glamourization' includes a few cheap and uncomfortable chairs now out front on the street. The rear beer garden survives, and being southerly, gets some evening sun, even in October, unlike the seats on the street. There is a noticeable rise in prices to go with this (pint of Peroni and tub of ordinary salted peanuts from the tin came to £8.05!). The loss of atmosphere, increase in prices, and same so-so food means not much reason to go back. A great loss to the neighbourhood.

The previous comments seem to cover pretty much everything about this pub but I wanted to add one as I like it so much. What I would also say is how much the pub feels part of what is a friendly local community, hosting residents' nights as well as putting on activities such as a monthly 'Treasure Quest' which takes place around the local area. I've not done it but by all accounts this is very enjoyable and taken part in by people of all ages.

It's also very popular with people from close by offices both at lunchtimes and in the evenings, as well as being a favourite for socialising for many others. Tucked away on the tranquil Brook Green it has a lovely atmosphere and always in my experience efficient service. The menu is nothing particularly remarkable but the food is very good and quite reasonably priced considering the location. Drink is not cheap, well over 4 for a glass of wine or a pint (ale around the 4 mark I'm told but my friend was impressed with the quality of the usual Fuller's offerings here).

The pub is also far bigger than it looks as has been mentioned, lots of snug places to sit, and the garden is one of the best places you could spend a summer's afternoon/evening. So as you may be able to tell, I'm another fan of this pub.
Jecissa - 9 Apr 2012 15:41
Agree with the last couple of comments, really nice, friendly and welcoming pub this. Food is also very good. A lot more space inside than you'd think from the outside and the garden is lovely. Nice selection of drinks too I think including a gin brewed locally. Will give it a 9, would probably be a 10 if my Heineken had been poured better, minor complaint though.
kevj - 25 Feb 2012 15:02
Lovely pub, I can't speak highly enough of it. It makes the most of being fortunate with the area; Brook Green is a lovely place. Being on the green the pub is lucky but the rest of what makes it so good are of their own making, that is friendly and attentive service, great selection of food and drink and a really well set out pub. The images of the green and other parts of Hammersmith on the walls are a nice touch too. It all obviously pays off as it's a really popular pub with local residents, visitors to the area and local businesses alike, whatever the time of day. I think you have to book for Sunday lunches or in the evenings for larger groups. Worth it though, one of my favourite pubs!
W_Lucy - 23 Oct 2011 18:44
A very picturesque pub excellently situated on Brook Green. You wouldn't imagine how big it is from first looking at it from the outside, but the pub extends a fair way back with ample seating and one of the best gardens you'll find in London which is unsurprisingly very popular in the summer. It's certainly upmarket, not a "traditional" pub in that sense, but then what do you expect in this area. I've visited on many occasions at various times in the day and it always tends to be busy, particularly of course in the evenings - yet the service has never been anything but excellent.

I would say it is a pub worth seeking out. The atmosphere is always relaxed and friendly, drink and food I always find to be of the best quality (as you'd expect from a Fuller's pub) and the area itself is an extremely nice one. Also, considering the area, I'd say the drink and food is pretty reasonably priced, though it's unsurprisingly not cheap. No sport is shown here either, which some might consider is a bonus.

Former Chef and Brewer pub situated by Brook Green. It's a relatively recent Fullers acquisition.

It's much larger internally than it looks from the outside, extending back a relatively long way to an attractive looking garden.

Fullers have resisted turning it into a gastro pub style place and, although it's very food orientated, it's not unpleasant, with several perches and tables by the front windows for non diners. It doesn't feel much like a drinkers up at all however - instead it's a rather impersonal up market food, family orientated establishment - which is what I imagine it was trying to be in its Chef and Brewer days.

There's some exposed brickwork and beams, but the decor is rather non-descript and there's little if anything of note.

I imagine that, with its pleasant positioning and large garden, it's quite popular and busy in the summer months, but I don't see any reason to specifically look this one out.
JohnBonser - 19 Jan 2010 12:45
First visit back to the Queens Head since Fullers bought the place, and the interior certainly has been brightened up since the Chef & Brewer days (but without this traditional building being spoilt by some ghastly gastro-pub makeover). The staff seem much more clued-up than before too. The beer used to be OK before, and whether the previous unimaginative selection has been improved since the takeover is a matter of personal choice I guess as Chiswick's finest is not to everybody's taste. However, the Pride (which is so often rather average in pubco outlets) was on top form here. Overall, rating improved from before.
rpadam - 12 Dec 2009 10:11
service not graet but one of the best pubs ive ever been to brilliant in the summer easy rating of 8
scottabrint - 26 Nov 2009 09:40
This is a top notch Fuller's pub. As you enter there's space on the left and right, and the pub extends a long way in front of you. At the end of it is a brilliant garden which is like a slice of the countryside in west London and has heaters for the winter at the end of it nearer the building itself too.

The decoration is as described by the last posters. The drink is on the expensive side but yet reasonable for the affluent area. I had a steak and my friend had a burger, these were both very good and with change from 10 good value again considering the area, and it came quickly.

The customers as CityGent said below are pretty well to do professionals, groups of posh youngsters and couples. It's a good mix and the atmosphere's nice. The service is efficient and friendly.

Taking all this into account as well as adding on being in pleasant Brook Green, this is a pub to recommend.
Captain_Carwash - 17 Nov 2009 21:22
This is a Fullers pub with almost the full range on, but excluding Chiswick and including Gales Seafarers. The half of Seafarers that I had was OK and cost 1.60, so I suppose a pint would be 3.20. Not cheap, but my long-suffering wallet seems anaesthetised to this sort of price by now. The pub itself is very smart and clean, and reasonably comfortable. There are two or three high stools and tables in the front central window area, and a couple of sofas, but the rest of the furniture consists of normal tables and chairs. The mix doesnt seem out of place here. Theres not much in the way of dcor on the walls; a few black and photographs and thats just about it.

The pub goes back a fair bit on the right, and looks as if it might have been extended at the some, and there is a smaller room on the left with just a few tables and chairs. The ceiling sports some false beams; there is some exposed brickwork on pillars and walls; and the flooring is a mixture of russet tiling, and dark, slate coloured, stonework.

The kitchen was closed for a refurbishment during my visit, so I cant comment on the food. Other posters have made positive comments about the garden, but the weather would have to be a good bit nicer for me to venture out there! This is not the sort of pub that I usually go for, but for some reason I rather like this one. I suppose the modernist dcor is not too overstated, and I do like Fullers ales. This pub comes recommended by Amy_J, who is clearly a lady who knows a good pub when she sees one (although I confess that I do still prefer the Blue Anchor!). I would happily drop in for a pint or two if in the area again, and Im sure that I could happily spend an evening in here if in the right company.
RexRattus - 14 Nov 2009 11:35
Agree with the reviews below. Probably the best pub in Hammersmith. Good selection of ales which are in top condition as usual with Fullers. Can't speak for the food as I was too busy drinking. Good staff too though.
t_y - 17 Sep 2009 12:44
This pub is going from strength to strength these days. Splendid service and a wonderfully pleasant garden to while away the hours in. This is one of my favourite pubs.
Amy_J - 11 Sep 2009 12:35
I visited The Queen's Head for the first time in about a year recently; even though I walk past it regularly I'd not made my way in since Fullers took it over. Having now been I can say without doubt that I'll be going in a lot more often (and already have been again since). I can only echo the past couple of comments and congratulate the staff and Fullers on providing a top notch place to drink and eat in Brook Green, with a wide range of beers, wines and spirits. I also like the mix of people there; youngsters and the more middle aged amongst us in equal measure, but all enjoying themselves. The only fault I can think of is parts of the inside do have the feel of a gastropub, and the clientele are quite on the 'posh' side (which doesn't bother me but might some people), but I think there are enough positives here to find that not be too much of a bother.
CityGent - 10 Sep 2009 11:08
Lovely pub with a wonderful garden in a lovely area. Plenty of places to sit inside even though it can get busy in the evenings. It has a pleasant atmosphere and the staff seem good. The food is very nice - put it comes at a price you'd expect from the area (you'll just about get change from 10 for the cheapest meals). I recommend the pub.
granny_moon - 8 Sep 2009 17:14
Since Fullers have taken this pub over, it is undoubtedly a lot better than it was. It's now an excellent pub, as befitting somewhere in Brook Green. I find the drink and service to be, on the whole, very good. The layout of the pub is also to be envied by others, with plenty of space inside and one of the best pub gardens I've seen in London. It's well worth drinking in.
C.B - 7 Aug 2009 11:32
Thanks pubmanstu - excellent news and I shall be heading there again soon.
CityGent - 10 Jul 2009 11:38
Yes...CitiGent... this is now a Fuller's pub and they have made some subtle positive changes...give it a go!
pubmanstu - 30 Jun 2009 10:48
Have Fullers taken this over yet? It's in a great location and I live quite close by so have been meaning to visit again, I certainly will do soon if Fullers have worked their magic on it.
CityGent - 25 Jun 2009 14:12
Visisted the Pub and sampled a pint of Pride. The pub has been refurbished and looks good. Young girl behind the bar not really clued up and a bit slow-the barman was struggling to get pressure on a lager and cursing. The ever present Seafarers was on offer but I didn't try it. The Pride was good 2.70 a pint 50p less than the Scrasdale Tavern just up the road!!
milsonman - 16 Jun 2009 10:58
Sorry, my most recent comment about this place referred to the Queens Arms in Greyhound Road! (I think 'Zagreb' made the same confusion in his review). No, this pub was one of my locals back in my Hammersmith days - for some reason it never made the best use of its enviable location (considering it's so near the A4 and Hammersmith Broadway, you wouldn't know it). Please get food or beer sorted out, preferably both. Hopefully Fullers will.
rainlight - 31 May 2009 18:50
Fullers do good things, if one has to generalise...
Better than Youngs in general, or maybe I'm biased due to one too many pints of the lovely ESB?!

Groovehound - 1 May 2009 18:44
Fullers have a good track record in this area...and I'm sure they will sympathetically put their high standards into this pub too. They are one of the few breweries still expanding their portfolio
pubmanstu - 27 Apr 2009 10:40
I have just seen that Fullers have bought it from Punch so perhaps some hope of a return to pub values.
milsonman - 27 Mar 2009 14:36
I agree with the other reviews - this place was gorgeous pre-refurb. The refurb has completely destroyed the old atmosphere. I dont know if they've had a change of chef also but the standard of the food is terrible for the price. The fish i had was tasteless and the vegetables raw! How hard is it to cook a vegetable! Such a waste! I hope they get their act together soon.
BernH - 17 Mar 2009 15:15
This pub used to be really nice with a good, proper pub interior. What a shame it's been refurbished. There's nothing particularly wrong with it and I found the service pretty good (reading other reviews maybe I was lucky), and it's in a nice place for a pub, but I can't help feeling sad at another pub ruined by 'modernisation'. It's alright otherwise; It should be a great pub but it isn't. Shame.
kevj - 12 Jan 2009 16:09
Met up with Brian Moles in here (see my post on the Kings Arms in Tring as to why this was so special).

We played a trick on a friend of his and it was the best day of my life. I did not care much for the prank, it was just the thrill of spending 20 mins in Brian's company.

PS Pub was average, but as Brian was there it gets a 10.
discerningbeerdrinker - 6 Jan 2009 12:47
Another decent pub interior ruined by a crap refurb.

Crap bar service - very slow despite there being plenty of staff - 4 handpumps but only one (the woeful Bombardier) available.

Despite the plethora of staff, you have to order at the bar - what the F**k do they do?

Best avoided - go to the Old Parr's Head nearby - not perfect but at least the service is good.
eddierowles - 17 Dec 2008 16:13
Shame, it used to be a little local boozer with some features that weren't so much retro as had never been changed since the 1960s. It seems being in the CAMRA Regional Inventory doesn't stop a pub being turned into a restaurant.
rainlight - 14 Dec 2008 09:59
I detest pubs like this - that sort of smug and smarmy self-assured crotch-grabbing that goes with the average Audi driver or Robbie Williams - I wouldn't be surprised if it was run by him. When the food eventually arrives it's like you have to remember whether you ordered it or not or whether it was actually last week...But when it does turn up it is generally acceptable in a "shouldn't be more than 10" kind of way (but it is). It's the bar experience I lose the will to live - order 4 or more drinks and see if you get overcharged or the wrong drinks . It is best to visit this place at 4am - when it's shut. Over-priced pretentious nonsense for people who don't dare complain.
paulio1966 - 25 Aug 2008 20:41
Poor service...Pitch a tent, it can be quite a wait for your order...They don't allow you to order a bowl of chips without ordering a main meal...What happened to having a bar snack? Staff and management need to shake a leg. I feel they are punching above their weight in terms of price for beer and food.
guyguy - 15 Aug 2008 14:50
What an appalling lack of service! The Queen's Head will not be getting any further business from me! After going to the bar to find out where my sandwich was long after all my colleagues had their meals, it finally arrived at the table. The bread was dried out on one side, but I was prepared to let that go. After 2 bites midst conversation, I realised that the sandwich was cheese and pickle, not the cheese and ham I'd ordered. Then the penny dropped that it was the very same sandwich my colleague had returned to the kitchen 20 minutes earlier as it was not what he'd ordered. Another person in our party had also not got her meal yet. I took the sandwich back to the bar, showed them it was stale, and said it was not what I'd ordered. The response? Not the apology I'd expected. Oh no! Instead what I got was a diatribe that we were disorganized when we ordered our food and when they brought it out, no one accepted the sandwich.... hardly surprising the latter, since no one at our table had ordered it! I challenged the so-called gentleman behind the bar asking him if he was blaming the customers for their mistake. Again his winning response was "Why not? You can blame us, so we can blame you". Why would you work in a service industry when you clearly don't like people, and have no concept of service? Appalling on every count Queens Head and this after over-charging me the week before!!!!
lunapiata - 30 Jun 2008 18:07
Starting to get too pricey for what it is. The food is has good days and horrendous days. It wouldn't hurt to have a couple of extra bar staff on some days as well. Wait till summer to take advantage of the good sized beer garden (filled with midges).

pezza132 - 29 Jan 2008 16:57
Working in the local area, we visit this pub regularly, as its one of the better pubs in the area. The staff are friendly and its a lovely looking place with a great beer garden. But its going downhill. The prices are getting ambitious now, not much change from 3.50 for a pint of the ordinary lager. However the food is the real problem, its worse every time I go there. Today I had fish and chips : simple and safe usually, they now consistently overcook the fish until its dry and lifeless, and undercook the chips so they arrive so hard you could use them as door stops. McDonalds is making better food. We have had enough and will no longer be visiting. Try The Old Fire Station in Hammersmith for decent grub, or The Cumberland Arms.
anonymous - 2 Nov 2007 14:20
The Queens Head is part of the 'Chef and Brewer' chain. It's very pleasant inside, like a country pub and hard to believe that you're in London. The beer was fine, with a choice of Greene King IPA, Wells Bombardier and Old Speckled Hen when we visited. We had originally intended to just have a few beers and then move on to a restaurant to eat, but it was so pleasant in the Queens Head that we stayed. There was a good range of specials on the menu board, the food was fine, typical Chef & Brewer - nothing fancy but reasonably priced, the staff were friendly and we had a very good evening.
Trequites - 10 Aug 2007 20:21
Oh, one more thing: the fruit machine is an eyesore, and should at the very least be put somewhere less conspicuous.
Cranham - 11 Jul 2007 22:46
Having used this pub intermittently over the last four years or so:
A. The staff are uniformly friendly; it is true that many of them are not primary anglophones, but that's London for you.
B. The decor is country-pub excellent, an oasis in the Hammersmith area.
C. The beer, cocktails (including Pimm's) and winelist all very acceptable.
D. The weak point is that the food went downhill during the Autumn of 2006. Cold stuff (like the antipasto) is still good but the cooking is now poor.

Overall frustrating: if the food was back to the standards here 2004-2005, then it would get a 9.5 from me.
Cranham - 11 Jul 2007 22:44
A good pub - but I would question the lack of soap in the gents toilet. Hate to be picky but if you can charge nigh on ten quid for a burger and chips without laughing out loud and cackling like an evil genius then you should be able to supply a few bars of soap for people. There's a Tesco over the road people!!! Other than that, good well kept beer, a large enough pub to find a spot to hide that suits everyone even on a busy day and an imaginative and tasty food menu. Oh and no soap. Did I mention that? I feel dirty...
agnes_guano - 29 May 2007 12:03
I've been there twice in the five days. Contrary to the recent comments, I haven't found the staff to be rude. Yesterday evening one called me 'sir' and another was happy to engage in friendly banter. Maybe I caught them on good days.

The beer garden is quite spaceous but because of the surrounding houses and some tree canopy there's little chance of direct sun light.
dlatchana - 23 May 2007 15:55
This pub looks perfect. Inside its done out like a proper English country pub and it has got a great beer garden. However, in line with lots of the other comments I'd agree it has two major flaws:

1) The staff. I'm not actually sure they mean to be rude, I just think they have a very poor command of English. The service is slow, the waiting staff seem to range from the incompetent to the incomprehensible.
2) The food. It really is just barely average. We went in last Sunday for lunch to be told (after the food was served) there was no Yorkshire pudding; we then found that the roast potatoes were the frozen kind - you can tell, trust me - and the veg in general was of fairly low quality and badly prepared. They also forgot to add gravy to one of them.

The question of course is, don't the management know there's a problem? Well may be they do, but the place was full on Sunday, so perhaps they don't care?

Oh, and last Sunday the ceiling was leaking water in numerous places - a sign of a pub suffering general neglect?
Sparky1 - 15 May 2007 17:02
I discovered this pub soon after starting working in Hammersmith last year. I love it! As has been mentioned, the beer garden is lovely and the pub itself is warm, comfortable and cosy.

As for drinks and food I can't really comment, I'm happy as long as I can get a glass of pinot and a bowl of chips! I did have the sausage and mash last Friday though, and it was very tasty.

The only thing I would say is that it can get v busy on a Friday night. If you want a table I would suggest you get down there straight after work and order a bottle of your favourite wine to avoid queuing!

It's the kind of pub where you can while away the hours with good friends. Highly recommended.
fizz190 - 27 Feb 2007 14:05
as one of many good locals in the area i love this pub. the staff have never been anything but friendly on my (many) visits. The food is nothing special but good pub food and the beer garden is fantastic in the summer.
i'd recommend a visit to anyone.
anonymous - 19 Jan 2007 13:16
Pub cosy, intimately lit with candles. Welcoming smiles from all 3 barstaff, contrary to previous reports. Minor communication problem with shy Eastern European barmaid but more than compensated by pleasant smile and eye contact. All tables taken
at front (smoking) area but plenty of tables in rear (non-smoking) section. Unfortunately one bar staff smoking here but large enough area not to be a huge issue. Beer selection not fantastic but 3 reasonable draught beers including IPA, Wells Bombadier & Rosey Nosey seasonal ale. Menu looks excellent if a little pricey. Good choice with 5 good-looking veggie options. Many specials. Good wine selection, not all your usual Chardonnay/sauvignon standards. Poor selection of rose wine though. Very reasonable prices for a bottle. Low key background music (Xmas standards). Most of clientelle 30+ tonight (28 Dec. 6pm). After first drink finished same barmaid came over to offer table senice for a refill. Same price I think. Lovely service, genuine smile again!
Ate prawn avacado salad with bread followed by an excellent mushroom pie with carrots and green beans. Not over-cooked. Not huge portions but enough. No potatoes. Some confusion from bar staff as to whether Pie was on or off but resolved amicably enough. Overall a good pub for a chat with friends over a meal but not a pure drinkers pub. The foreign bar staff have some communication problems which might be interpreted as surly by some but I found them totally amenable and love the east european barmaid!

NWoodcock - 29 Dec 2006 09:53
Potentially excellent pub, but always clueless staff. A real missed opportunity, but there's always hope...
rpadam - 13 Dec 2006 23:03
I've only been here a few times but I've not had any problems though I've never eaten food. It's great for the summer with the outside seating but I do accept what some of people say about the staff (not too positive about life) and the atmosphere. My advice, go with a group of friends and make the atmosophere yourselves.....
vlb - 1 Aug 2006 14:22
As Lucy said below, this place SHOULD be great - with nice decor and the massive garden. We even had very nice meals.

We just spent a nice sunny Sunday evening there with a few beers & were repulsed by the staff. They don't care, don't not seem bother and are just plain dismissive of customers.

Never again & I recommend you go to the The Old Parrs Head on Blythe Rd nearby instead.
thortb - 5 Jun 2006 17:40
This place should be great - the decor, the garden. A proper pub. It used to be. The last two times I have visited the food was terribe; yellow broccoli, which when I complained, was taken away, but the staff did not seem bother. Thinking that everyone has off days, I visited again this weekend. They cremated my roast shoulder of lamb, it was solid and tasted like charcol! To be fair, this time the staff responded well, giving me my money back, and myself and partner free desserts, but still very disappointing for a pub which should be a lot better. I only rated it 4 for the ambience.
Lucy06 - 15 May 2006 19:17
what are people talking about this is one of the best pubs in london.
Briant - 12 Mar 2006 14:25
I had christmas lunch there.
It was the worst lunch i ever had there was no atmosphere, the starters were all dried up, the main course looked and tasted like it had been ther for 48 hours and how could one possibly ruun a pudding.
It was the most disappointing lunch i have ever had and to top it ,it happened to be Xmas day. I also have to state it was not cheap at 55.95 per person.
I would never ever eat there again. It ruined our lovely Xmas day as all we talked about was how absolutely awful it was and we all comnplained about the cost. Thanks Queens Head for ruining our Xmas day in more ways then one
miamontague - 14 Jan 2006 13:52
Haven't been in for a while, but I hope they have improved. My last visit consisted of a 25 minute wait for two pints of cider. Not good enough. Was it because we didn't want food?If so,it only helped us to make up our minds not to bother trying it.The pub itself looks grand, and the gardens are superb. But the staff....well the less said I think....
mariusmaxtible - 29 Nov 2005 18:40
I'm astonished that some people have experienced ill-manners and bad service from the staff. I live nearby and am a regular visitor, and the staff have only ever been charm and efficiency personified. It's a great pub and the food is very good if you stick to the basics (pies and roasts etc.). It's normally just the right side of busy as well...i.e. lively but normally easy to get a table if you want one. It's the best pub in the area by miles!
Inhabitant - 23 Nov 2005 14:25
Good Food and nice atmosphere, much better than its rating.
anonymous - 23 Oct 2005 15:08
When I walked into the place for the first time, I noted to myself "this is what a proper pub should look like". It was early on a Sunday afternoon - the tables were full but it wasn't overly busy. We ordered the Sunday Roast and it was hands down the BEST pub roast I've ever had. It was both quality and quantitiy. Heafty portions of everything and it all tasted better than any other I've had - and for the same price as lesser meals I've had. Our food was brought out to us very promptly and we had no problems whatsoever with the staff.
skorch - 10 Oct 2005 10:25

I don't understand the bad reviews - I think this is a wonderful pub, with excellent atmosphere and great food at good prices.

It's become our regular lunch pub now, and the gammon steak with chips and egg for 7 is well worth it, staff are also very friendly.

craigdunn - 7 Oct 2005 12:49
The staff in this pub seem to be reject extras from Eastenders. I called in here at lunchtime, and they were Effing & Blinding and generally taking the piss out of anyone they knew, when I finally got served I had the most miserable peice of shit that should be Stella Artois, and considering Queens Tennis Club (Where the Stella Artois tournement is held 2 weeks before Wombledon)is only beyond the wall, they should serve something a bit more ACE than that s41t
zagreb - 3 Sep 2005 23:19
What can I add that hasn't already been said? This pub is in an absolute prime location by Brook Green tennis courts, and has one of the best beer gardens in West London.Unfortunately, the staff are so slow, miserable and rude it isn't worth the bother going there.Replace the staff, get rid of the rubbish menu, start catering for people in general instead of just the overpaid diners and something good could blossom at this pub.
Mr.Raffles - 23 Aug 2005 14:17
Why oh why are the staff so lousy in this pub?? It is in a fantastic position, the beer garden is great and the decor inside is wonderful. The staff however are the worst I have ever encountered. They are beyond slow, they are rude and if you aren't ordering from their (vastly overpriced) menu, you will be completely ignored. If corrected, this would be a fantastic pub.As it is though,it gets a low rating.

Every comment about the food is correct, but this is called beerintheevening isnt it? Was here a couple of weeks ago during a very warm friday night and the local Totty use this pub as a warm up for their night out. Amazing legs + short skirts + great bods = chins on tables from me & mates, beer was ok too. Used to have a drink in here regularly when "on-call" at the now closed West London Hospital on Hammersmith Broadway, back in 1990/2. It wasn't like this then, otherwise we would never have got any work done ;)

The only good thing about this pub is the beer garden, which on a nice day attracts the crowds. There is little else to recommend. The food is overpriced and of a shoddy standard. The range of beer is unimaginative. The staff (in my experience) are slow and surly. Bad management for a pub in a prime location.

Traditional homely English pub with low lighting and a good resturant. Very romantic.

Have not been there for quite some time, so cannot say anything about the food, but I really like the atmosphere! It's a charming old pub with a good selection of beer!

Entertained my client here (lunch) about 2 weeks ago.

Abosultely awful food - we all had 'hot hobs' which contained virtually no filling whatsover (I counted 3 bits of chicken in mine).

Yup, correct Big Ron- they think by cutting costs (presumably by cutting fillings in sanwiches!) they can save money.

Big mistake. This isn't the first time i've been thoroughly ripped off by the Chef And Brewer chain - but it will be the last.

Most of these negative comments are not my experience at all. I wouldn't normally touch John Smiths with a barge pole. They serve much better beers than that, and I've never been able to fault the food. Good atmosphere, decent beer garden. More popular than this page would suggest...

Like a lot of pubs these days the emphasis seems to be on eating rather than drinking. Can't comment on the food because only been here for a drink. Nice pint of John Smith's. Service was prompt and friendly.
Can't knock the place for doing what they do, but at the end of the day it's a gastro-pub that's mostly full of yuppies.
Massive beer garden, but gets packed and feels too crowded.

Truely diabolical food. Looks good on the menu (although the long list of "basket food" favourites such as scampi and Gammon steak with pineapple did raise some suspicion to start)

Starter was Mussles Provencale. Half of which had not opened - and half of the remainder had shattered shells.

Main course arrived - "Sirloin" (ie Rump) steak with Cross and Blackwell Peppercorn sauce. Tasty.

All the veg had been cooked in the same water, meaning the carrots for one, all tasted of cauliflower.

For desert - well we didnt bother. The sight of Blackberry cheesecake, only suggested another straight from the freezer conconction (a la Sara Lee / Ross) - and we decided not to have a "liquer coffee".

Real shame, as it is a nice pub inside, and great for a beer.

If you want to experience the way British food used to be in the eighties, then please do go. You can even have a prawn cocktail!

food looks good on the menu but when it arrives it isn't very special. actually, it's a bit yukky-yukky.

I'm afraid it has Frank. Simply poor management though trying to make the highest turnover at the cost of quality to the customer, do they think we are stupid!!

Suprised the H&S hasn't shut them down. Another big shame for the area.

beer garden is great, but what a joke, you have to come inside at 10pm so you don't disturb the neighbours - quite sure the pub was their first (according the Dick Turpin!!)

Spot the managemnts comments below though! HA

im amazed by some of the comments. not been for a while (1 year) but i would have said it is my favorite pub in london, especially if you are sick of the "all bar one" formula. would be a great shame if it has really slipped so much.

this pub has the best range of food avaliable in the area and a massive beer garden that gets full most evenings. if your looking for a relaxed atomsphere then come during the week. or if your up for soicalising and drinking then come down on a friday night. its a great stop off point before hitting the town from hammersmith. the pub also takes party bookings sometimes during the week so if your looking for a buffet party at low cost then this is the place for you! just give em' a call :02076033174 ask for jenny or ben for term and conditions.

I agree with Kate, think it is one of the best pubs in West London.
katie - 22 Sep 2003 22:14
True enough about the food going downhill, especially on busy nights... one of our party had a chunk of green mold the size of a cherry in his dessert and the best the waitress could do was offer another! Decent wine selection with reasonable markups though...

A sadly deteriorated, shabby pub which used to be one of the best in West London. Reeks so badly of stale smoke that I can't bear to go inside.

What a waste of a lovely beer garden. If only a decent management team would take it over...

foxski - 9 Aug 2003 15:47
True about food, very poor and very overpriced. Drink in the garden in the sun and you'll love it. Eat in Stonemasons Arms on Glenthorne Road.

What a gorgeous pub! I found the staff to be very friendly and efficient and when combined with the cosy atmosphere that the charming old pub provides makes it a perfect place to take someone special! The beer garden is one of the best I've seen in London...food was average, but no major complaints.
Kate Stevens - 25 Jul 2003 10:52
I agree with "beers'" comments. The food has gone WAY downhill! You could always rely on the sausages and bubble and squeak or the beef and theakstons pie. Not any more... the Microwave must be working on full steam, as must the tin opener. When I was last there, there was a Health and Safety inspector in their following a complaint.. I still ordered though.

I have to correct you on the quality of the food. It used to be very nice food and I used to use it as the "entertaining the in-laws pub, and valentines etc."
However the last few times I have been there I have found that the food quality and portions have gone very down hill. not to mention the still raw stuffed chicken I we had that the manageress couldn't even be bother to apologise in person. They just shooed us out the door asap. REAL SHAME, just seem to be in for a fast buck as is all to common these days.
Check out the Bird in Hand for Paddys day though.

Tidy pub opposite Brook Green. Great big beer garden with plenty of trees. Away from main roads so very quiet place for warm afternoon/evening drinks. Good and selection of nice food too.
