Very functional, yet perfectly formed, locals pub. I dont know how Derby seems to carry over the quantity of pubs and the quantity of beer they serve. Another 8 available here.

TT Landlord in great condition.

Another place I seem to have forgotten to report on, despite have been there a number of times. Maybe it’s because it’s usually in the middle of a pub-crawl ?!

The friends I take on these crawls seem to regard this as one of their favourites, nut I feel it isn’t quite so much of a local’s pub as some others, and has a few pretentious features that grate with me.

Anyway, there are usually about 13 real ales available – enough to make anyone’s mouth water. There is a bit of a tendency to concentrate on the grapefruity hoppy IPAs, but usually at least one dark beer available. On my last visit I had the local Littleover Gold, which was very nice. There are also 3 real ciders available – these are on the other side of the central bar.

The interior is open-plan and not particularly large, but with a number of nooks and crannies – I don’t think any two tables are the same !

My last visit was also the first time I had eaten there. The range isn’t enormous, and is mostly standard pub fare, but I have to say both the quality and quantity are excellent. [ I had the plaice & chips – for £6.95 ] The one drawback being that the food is presented in a rather pseudo manner, with everything being served separately in it’s own specially shaped container.

7/10 – a really good pub, but not a great one.

return for the first time since last post, much better beer. Had Tiger, one from Salopian and one from Mickleover. Good atmosphere, now 8/10

This pub has a good reputation and is GBG listed. Called in for 4 take out pints of Tiger last week, it was pretty ordinary which is annoying when you have 4 to get through. 5/10

Handsome, partly wood panelled pub on the outskirts of the city centre. Usually sporting at least 9 hand pumped ales, much of it usual fayre but kept in great condition. A little bit ho- hum compared to more independently minded pubs nearby, but always worth a look if in the vicinity. Efficient, cheerful bar service adds a bit of distinction.
7/10.

My boozing companion and I have visited the Five Lamps several times in the last few months since we discovered that our favourite brew, the superb Thornbridge Jaipur (5.9% ABV) is usually available here at a very reasonable price (£3.50 a pint). At the other end of the strength scale there is normally Castle Rock Harvest Pale (3.8%ABV) and a range of twelve other beers of different types and alcohol content in between. Several are from local breweries but Everard's Tiger is usually available, because Everards own the pub.

It's a long time since I've eaten here, so I'm unable to comment about the food except that the menu is varied and the meals look pretty good. The staff are all very friendly, helpful and efficient and all in all, it is not difficult to see why this is a “must-do” on a pub crawl of Derby even though it is a bit out of the city centre.

Sampled a few pints of the stout, of which I can't remember its name or percentage. Condition was generally okay, but I wasn't mega keen.

Very large pub with a central bar along with many nice features.

Had a bar-meal which was reasonably priced and very filling.

Solid 7/10 for me.

Great pub. Lovely refurbisment in here and very good ale.

Visited here on the occasion of the CAMRA winter beer fest,; we ate lunch and had some excellent brews from the extensive choice of unusual ales.

Visited here on 4th June. Having been away from Derby for around 4 years I was intrigued to try this place as it has a varied past. Decor has changed vastly since I was last there, definitely for the better. Huge range of hand pull ales, all reasonably priced and well kept. I tried Oakham's JHB and Thornbridge Hopton. Both excellent. The standard ales seem to be Tribute, Pride and Landlord. Good lager and cider selection as well. Nice and clean and lovely staff. Recommended

Hoping to visit his pub on July 3rd.

Another visit found the Five Lamps thriving. 13 beers were on offer, and the two that I sampled, Kinver Buxton Blonde and Peak Ales Chatsworth Gold were beautifully kept. The food is delicious and comes in big portions. However, it is nice that though the pub has an emphasis on its food, the drinker that wonders in for a pint is just as welcome as those dining. A rare and welcome experience these days

First time for all of our party, and we found the pub as we expected from its entry in the GBG. A top range of ales, including the excellent Titanic chocolate and vanilla (sound horrible but it somehow works, but I couldn't drink 2) and Ratliffe's stout as well. Helpful and knowledgable staff who took the trouble to organise taxis for our return to the centre. We will be back.

This was a surprise; it didn't live up to the billing. We needed something to eat so shortened our stay at the Furnace. The food was excellent and the beer range of 11 handpulls faultless but the pub had a corporate feel about it and was therefore very different from the Exeter, Brewery Tap and Furnace. I'm being picky but it was strange all three of us felt the same and after a couple of rounds we moved on.

well worth the slight detour out of the main drag.well-kept ales and friendly, keen and efficient staff, probably the two essential constituents for a top drawer pub. only sorry we hadnt found it before.
darkman1828 - 17 Nov 2012 11:48
A largish one-room bar with an impressive array of handpumps on the counter. The beers have always been in tip-top condition whenever I have called in. The pub is quite geared towards food and the seating areas tend to reflect this but unlike some places I have been, the dining is not particularly intrusive and to be honest the food looks pretty good. The problem for beer drinkers in Derby is that one is spoiled for choice and with this pub being a little way from the city centre you might not get this far out but I would recommend that you make the effort and you can reward yourself with a pint of Peak brewery's Chatsworth Gold!

This is Derby CAMRA Pub of the year 2012 for a reason. A superb range of ales, all looked after well by the current landlord and his manager. I have to disagree with the previous review which praises the "Five Lamps ale" as I think it is the worst beer they have on offer! This is no slant on DBC but I honestly beleive if it was branded differently (i.e not called Five Lamps) then it would struggle in most real ale settings.

Having seen some terrible incarnations of this pub over the years, the current owners have given it a cosy country pub feel. They have pulled it off very well considering the pub is located on a busy main road on the outskirts of the city centre!

The food in there is also superb and reasonably priced. Its all locally sourced fayre and the portions are hearty!

If you are coming into the city from the north along the A6 - this is the first good pub you will come across.
Stimac - 15 Jun 2012 15:46
A lovely pub just outside the town centre serving 8 beers predominately from local breweries such as Buxton, Whim, and Peak Ales. all were in excellent nick, although there were no dark beers, which was my only tiny quibble. Food was superb and was properly prepared and cooked and was excellent value. Highly recommended

CAMRA Pub of the Year for 2012 and it's easy to see why...very friendly, welcoming staff, magnificient array of handpumps with mostly Locale brews, but also the odd guest from further afield. Their own label Five Lamps Ale brewed by Derby Brewing Company is a superb session ale. Excellent food on inclusing the Guilty Secret, a massive Yorkshire pudding with three proper sausages, mash, peas and gravy for under 7. Smart open-plan drinking area, but somehow quite intimate for all that. Seems like an out-of-town oasais, but it's only a few hundred yards from the Flowerpot and then you're into the inner city drinking circuit. Superb.
Gristy - 4 Mar 2012 16:34
Very impressed with this pub - looks like it is an Everards managed or tenanted house which has been allowed to stock a range of guest beers and all in great nick too!! We tried Hartington from Whim (or is it Whim from Hartington??) Well-furnished interior with friendly staff and chatty lcoals. Just missed the lunchtime food but will certainly visit this pub again - well worth the walk although it's not all that far from The Silk Mill and Dolphin. Just shows what can be done when a brewery or pubco give the lciensees a free hand in beer selection!! Let's see some more please.

Yet another excellent pub in the West End. You really can't go wrong here, with lots of fine ales to choose from, including local produce, and a decent looking food menu.

There is a really good circuit developing around here with the Seven Stars, Horse and Groom and Flowerpot, plus Ashbourne Road not being far away.

Hadn't visited this pub in twenty years since I left Derby but what a gem. Plenty of choice and discount for Camra members. Locale bar.

What a lovely pub! I've been going to Derby regularly this year for work and have been surprised by just how many great pubs there are in the city and this was my latest discovery last night. I only wish I had found it before. Very friendly welcome; excellent selection of real ales; ales in top-notch condition; mostly local ales; 20p off a pint for CAMRA members; and above all a great atmosphere, that hardest of pub characteristics to define. The clientele was nice and varied too, not all middle-aged real ale types. This is definitely one for my "I wish it was my local" category.

Called back and had some food this time. 7.95 for a pie, mash & gravy is maybe a touch on the high side but it was very good so no complaints. A steak at the same price seems good value.

Unfortunately I did now spot the obligatory TV with guess what - too easy - yes Sky Sports. Luckily the place is big enough so at least you can get away from it.
Clockman - 21 Jan 2011 15:06
I'm not a local as such but must have driven past this pub thousands of times in my life without ever bothering to call in. Have read some of the comments and it must have been pretty vibrant in the past!

I think I read about the 'latest' opening in the Derby Drinker and it sounded good enough to warrant a visit.

Called in last night and worthwhile it was too!

Quietish but with a good atmosphere. Tried three of the nine handpumps and all were pretty damm goood.

We didn't eat but the food that was coming out looked good.

Loo's were spotless.

Couldn't spot any of those huge intrusive TV's anywhere. What a pleasant change.

A Real Ale haven.

Will definately be back

Called in at lunchtime yesterday and was rather disappointed by the lack of clientele. There were a few other customers, but given what the Five Lamps has to offer, I would have expected more.

It isis excellent. 9 handpumps all of them on ... and all (except for Everards Tiger) were from local micros. The Peak Ales Chatsworth Gold was first class, as was the double-decker BLT sandwich at 3.00. The barman was very friendly and helpful.

The Five Lamps closed and was boarded up around this time last year, but reopened again in June.

Having now come back from the dead for a second time, it is a pub with a great potential and I hope that Derbys discerning drinkers will both appreciate and more importantly, support it.

Recently re-opened and a new pub for me. Seemed friendly and the beer was very good. The menu looked interesting and worth a try in the future. A good addition to the real ale scene in Derby!
MOGWIE - 16 Aug 2010 16:42
Good luck to everyone involved with reopening the Five Lamps. You certainly deserve to succeed. A good selection of well kept real ales I opted for the Everards Tiger which I could not fault. The food was excellent too a good choice without being too poncy or too pricey and which was freshly prepared and top quality. Friendly staff too.

With so many other pubs closing it is great to see that the Five Lamps has bucked the trend. Keep it up guys !!!

At the present rate the Five Lamps should be a cert for next years GBG !!!

Nice to see this place open again, and back to a traditional pub style like it was when it was the St Helens all those years ago. Nine beers on sale and good prices, 2.50 for Black Sheep and most others at 2.70.

It should do really well once the word gets round the beer drinkers of Derby. Hope the CAMRA guys promote it.
Chief_IDIOT - 30 Jun 2010 13:34
The Five Lamps reopened today after a refurbishment. The first things I saw were the NINE real ale handpumps on the bar. Six from microbreweries (2 Blue Monkey, 2 Peak Ales and 2 more which I can't remember) plus Black Sheep bitter, Bass and Everards tiger. I had the BG Sips which was gorgeous. Very modern fresh interior. Another great pub to add to the ever growing list of great ale pubs in Derby.
jarofporter - 22 Jun 2010 15:54
In spite of being reopened by Everards just over a year ago, the Five Lamps was closed and boarded up again when I passed earlier tonight.
steve2905 - 21 Jan 2010 03:49
This pub is definitely open, got to be the best in the area since its' amazing refurbishment, great Everards Beers, huge selection of spirits and their burgers are amazing and half price on a Tuesday! Brilliant.
derbydave - 21 Oct 2008 17:54
This pub's now closed.

The new neuxs of Live unadulterated music in the derby area absolutly excelent, foods not bad I think, beer could be better and a little cheeper but not selling themselves short, keep em peeled in the coming months for a good mixture of local and forigne music from here there and everywhere, not bad open mic sessions too.
anonymous - 20 Aug 2006 11:26
Stumbled across this pub on way to Uni, WOW! Always superb tunes in there, loads different DJ's, the food is excellent esp. the curries. It's laid back without the poncyness of most bars in Derby! I recommend!

Great friendly pub with amazing food. Used to be St Helens but underwent a fantastic transformation. My favourite.
