Fleece, Chelmsfordback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
SA Gold and Rev James on hand pull. SA gold pulled flat no flat or life. Tasted a gulp. Maybe two to make sure and returned to barman. Rev James was crapper took a smaller precautionary sip. Rank. Did not return and sat for a while. I couldn't believe someone came in asked for a tester of the Rev. Then asked for a pint. Flat as a pancake ! Looks to be a big lager pub.
Gave a better rating than the beer deserved as the bands are usually pretty good. Won't come here for a pint. The local spoons is a hope but they know beer.

All I can say is complete dross hole. Looks like an easy pub. All thats wrong with footballl and pubs.

Dirty, run down and the ale is truly awful.

After some years away from Chelmsford,I visited the Fleece recently and has now been renamed The Golden Fleece,As it was when I used to visit it back in he early 90s,it was then my most favourite pub in Chelmsford with a very friendly Atmosphere, for a time it had been simply called "the Fleece"but it's name has recently reverted back to it's full title.
Today the Golden Fleece has live bands 3 days a week, starting as early as 2pm in the afternoon-when I visited it was on a Tuesday,so no live bands for that day, they open for Breakfast every morning from 9am.
Another thing I noted that there was a disabled customer in a Wheelchair visiting when I was there and the Staff brought his Drinks to his table for him, this indeed goes a long way with me-superb helpful friendly staff !.

MA Music Pub of the Year 2011.

I went in this pub yesterday after an interview at the local uni. I have to say, AWESOME. I had Sole Goujans and fries, the goujans were out of this world, and the chips well, the best chips I have ever had in my life. The bar, couldn't have been more helpful, they were great; so I'd like to offer the staff of this pub a great big thank you. As Arnie Schwarznegger would say "I'LL BE BACK", lol.

I really like this pub.
It seems that its absorbed some of the atmosphere from the bay horse and subsequently caters to a more alternative crowd.
Local feeling about the pub which is tricky for the town centre - the beer garden's had some great work done to it, worth a check out.
Recently started getting some better ales and lagers in than before and the food isnt too bad for what it is.
Live music gives it a bit of an atmosphere and the guy that runs it is good at giving young bands a chance.
all in all, worth a visit.

It was a shame you didnt come in during cask ale week as you would have seen the effort made, we had 7 different ales on during the week and offered Camra members a 25% discount throughout the week. Im always open to comments about what ales people would like to be stocked.
Yes we do have a deal with Brentwood Brewing as we aim to support our local Brewers, we do rotate thier range weekly and will stock 3 ales during peak periods. Whilst it would always be nice to have 3 on at all times, im sure you would agree its better to do 2 well than 3 badly.
Its a shame you wont be back but im sure with all the great ale houses in Chelmsford (and we are truly blessed with these!!) im sure you wont go short of a pint or 7!
Thanks
Brett

The Landlord recently joined Camra and had a beer festival. Obviously making an effort.
I deliberately went outside of this period a truer picture of everyday life.
Two real ales on from 3 handpumps. The unimaginitive Bombadier and Brentwood Gold. The latter was 2.80 a pint and in reasonable condition.I presume the Brentwood beers will feature given the bar staff were wearing sponsored work wear.
Verdict. Embryonic. Drink elsewhere and watch its growth at arm's length

Was at the Fleece Thursday 30th July for the Live band night and I was impressed by the venue it was a bit small but had a little stage area for the bands. The food and drink was good both at good prices. The live music was great too and one band The Throwaway Strives had a huge crowd. There music was really good and had a great beat to it. Will come back again another night to see what happens but all in all a good night.

i must say this pub has improved considerably, have been here a few times now with my mates and its got good quality entertainment especially the live bands that play there at the weekends. love the bigger garden area that they have made., love that they sell chicago town pizza's, aswell as pub grub, a fab night out ...well recommend you pop in for a drink or two.

As a Chelmsford resident of many years standing I have been unable to avoid occasionally going into the Fleece as it seems to be one of those immutable laws of nature (Judge Tindal's Law) that, try as you might to avoid it, you always end up getting dragged in there by someone, usually at the fag end of a pub crawl, or when taking that long thirsty walk down Duke Street between visits to better pubs.
So it came to pass that Tindal's Law struck me this Christmas and I found myself in the Fleece with a group of mates.
What can you say about it. The place has no real soul at all, it tries to be all things to all men and consequently means nothing to anyone. Loud Music blares, silly shots and coctail offers festoon the garish bar area, mass market lager dominates the pumps. The obligatory sofas are dotted about on the bare wood floor. This is the sort of place where people who don't really like pubs go, it's impersonal, anonymous, grey, there's nothing there that you have to make your mind up about, so don't bother bringing it with you, it'll only get in the way.
Manly populated by the lager brigade, I noticed that they have made a stab at serving Real Ale, <shudder> Bombardier. A bland mass produced pint, but none the less, an ale. Suffice it to say that it was utter shite and I stuck to lager for the second round.
I consider that a 6.2 rating is far too high for this place, the average mark should be 5 and to my mind this place is below average.
Oh, and you can keep y'r bleedin' Jaegerbombs. 4/10

great live music at the weekends, nice beer garden with decent cover and heaters. well worth a visit if you like live music, good cocktails and really cheap jagerbombs @ 1.95
|
great if you like live band's etc, very loud music, good DJ's that actualy have & play your request. a mix of young and old not for the smartly dressed. could do with fresh paint job.

BobsUncle - surely giving pub reviews based on their slot machines is a bit like rating casino's on their pint of best?

Work in Chelmsford and called in here to see if it was any good this lunchtime. Dark and dingy inside and I noticed my glass was dirty, but unfortunately only after I had taken a long drink. First mistake was to play the fruit machine. Into it for 25 before I could blink and then the barman appeared at my shoulder and began giving me advice; a sure sign that he watches what goes in and out and plays it.
After a further 20 in, I made my second mistake which was to put another 20 note into the inbuilt changer. This one got stuck, the machine alarmed and the barman switched it off. He made a phone call and said "they will be here soon".
Forty minutes later, I asked him who "they" were. "Leisure Link" he said. I explained to him that I appreciated that it wasn't his fault, but I expected to be treated like a customer and not a nuisance and asked him to call them back and see when they would arrive as I had to go back to work.
Their response was on a par with this pub's general attitude, "could be anytime, half an hour, to three or four hours". I therefore had no option but to leave my 20 note chewed up in a machine that no-one there could or would open. I also, more in hope than expectation left my name and a phone number. However, I did get a phone call over 2 hours later, so walked the mile & a half back. As I walked in, the barman and three mates were on the machine, which was banging out money, presumably my input from earlier. I collected my 20 and walked out, vowing neither to return, nor recommend. Nice experience - call in for lunch, spend money in the supplied entertainment, get mugged for 65 and leave having been treated like some sort of pariah instead of a spending customer.
Not intended as a rant, but maybe a warning to all you fruity players that this pub will happily take your money, but has no interest in treating you with any respect should their machines steal your cash. Be warned.

never a pleasure. poor beer, lairy punters and in need of gutting out.

use this pub during day if on business in chelmsford as find it a nice place to relax , good range of beer and food , one pool table and a few fruit machines which seem to attract the uni students and or chavs , but a nice pub also on a walk from station to town so stop in on way to town centre
