Having read previous reviews and being new to the area and the pub I felt I had to update. Don and Jane who have the pub are so welcoming to all customers old and new. They are trying to improve the pub all the time which is clearly shown with the new menu which has been created and the work done by their chef. All the food is made on the premises and the chips, what can I say. REAL chips not frozen! They also now do pizza on weekends which you can take away with you if you order late, upto closing time. A bonus in an area where there is nowhere to get food that late at night. There is also a weekly "Theme" menu on a Thursday which seems to change fairly regularly. It started as a curry night and changed to an American theme. I wonder what the next one will be?

The only cask beer on offer was disgusting - (Caledonian 80/-), place was dead. Friend I was with told me it used to be thriving. Probably not helped by the 'hyper' landlord (seems to be the same guy who runs the nearby Yew Tree). No real ale there either. Shame.

The brewery must have kicked the previous owners out. Doesn't look like it has been sold - never been advertised. The Greyhound was closed earlier in the week and reopened on Saturday. Looks like the brewery have taken the pub back. Good luck to the new manager. Does anyone know if the Greyhound will be showing football?

THE GREYHOUND PUB........ CLOSED.............
|
I have been to visit "the greyhound" and notice saying closed!!!! What have the recent management done to this great pub!!!!! Shame on you Russ and Co. Have to go down to Worsley now. Goodbye Greyhound, hello Worsley pubs and Yew Tree - Ohhhhhhh
|
The greyhound food wa s not fresh and completely microwaved. Just my opinion. Wont be rushing back very soon.
|
it has been some time since I last visited the Greyhound but, after a busy afternoon shopping, thought I would call in last Sunday. Unfortunately I was not aware there had been a football match showing earlier. What a complete mess the whole place looked liked it had been blitzed - empty glasses and dirty plates strewn the whole area, I could do no more than turn round and get out as quickly as possible.

I am so pleased that, yes, we have found a little gem in The Greyhound! My wife and I have been in a few more times and again have had a great evening. The only fault I can make is that they are not serving food there at the moment, but I am told the kitchen will be open on Friday and will have a new chef and new menu. We had a walk down to moorings for our tea on Sunday, it was good value for money but the mash tasted like powdered stuff, I hope The Greyhound doesn't go for the cheap and cheerful microwave menu. Come on, lets have some homemade food!!

My wife & I recently moved to the Boothstown area and went into The Greyhound last night for the 1st time. What can I say?? We had a fantastic night. It was one of the owners 40th birthday party and how welcome did we feel! We only went in for a quick drink to check the new local out and ended up staying all night! They had a fantastic Male artist on and we couldn't believe the atmosphere! A real mixture of young and old, all dancing and singing along with each other! The hot buffet for the owners birthday was curry and rice and it was fantastic! We had a great night, I hope it wasn't just because it was a birthday party that it was so good! We will be back next weekend to see! Lets hope my wife and I have found a little Gem near to our new home, no Taxis!!! I must give a big hello to the two Debbie's who partly run the pub, they made us feel very welcome and filled us in on our new area!! Thank You!

Moorings will re-open on Tuesday 4th August serving 2 for 10 meals, ALL DAY, EVERY DAY.

Moorings to re-open in the near future !

I disagree with you. Maybe the people now visiting the pub are appreciating the good food, welcoming staff and management. I don't live in the area and I visit the Greyhound when I am around and have always found it warm and inviting. Maybe you should try the Greyhound instead of saying your bad reports, do you really visit the pub? - I don't agree football will cause any problems - sky is a bonus to any pub or club in this current climate. Maybe there were many customers satisfied in the pub and they wanted to post their comments! Diane

splodge99 - what a wonderful accurate review - i myself thought it somewhat odd about the number of "good reports" quickly accumulating and promoting the Greyhound on here.
I still visit regularly, the bar staff are great, you couldn't ask for nicer people - not tried the food yet because there are not that many people eating in there as yet. Yes you are correct the football element is somewhat off-putting and makes the place no more that a rowdy match-day place and came be quite intimidating.
If and when the Mooring re-opens it will be the real test for the Greyhound

I should add that my original username on here was drphibes but I no longer have access to the email account I used for that.

I originally posted a brief review of this pub in 2007 based on several visits from earlier that year. I have re-visted the place a number of times this year. Its not a bad place, but has the potential to become one.
The one thing that is apparant are the self-promoting reviews on here. Two reviews all of 2008 up to 17/12 /08, then 4 excellent reviews in one hour , what are the chances of that? Again recent postings promoting various nights at the pub.
Sky Sports is not the answer to improve pubs. Plasma screens dotted around pubs tend to have a detrimental effect, it will drive some customers away completely, and bring in others who wll only show up for football. I had the misfortune of turning up when a recent united game was shown , the owners need to keep an eye of some of them. The mix of karaoke/poker/disco/tv sports does not make a pub, its the people. A number of pubs have tripped up wit this formula, most notably the Bridgewater in Worsley which was ruined by it (the sport/disco). No coincedence that other pubs have ripped out Sky.
The food was not bad , but it will not sell itself on the food. The catchment area is huge for this pub considering the very limited competition - there is no reason why it should not be full of locals most nights. If it isn't something is not quite right.

What an excellent pub. Noticed new owners and also new manger, Emma, now running the Greyhound. Notice curry nights on Tuesday, new and also poker night on a Monday. What a change in the pub as now also well equipped with televisions and also sky sports. A credit to the new owners. Good atmosphere, very friendly bar staff. Well worth another visit. Going back for curry night.

Visited Greyhound when on travels - still very good pub - typical good food. Tried curry on curry night, excellent value and taste, came with many extras. Emma, new manager will always do a takeaway for you, noticed doing some curries for some customers to take home. Atmosphere excellent and good crowd of people. Pleasure to visit on my travels. When in Boothstown the Greyhound is always worth a visit.

and "while stocks last"
|
so hopefully on St George's Day the same will apply to beers and lagers
|
You'll be pleased to know then that on St Patricks Day they are selling Guiness at 1.50 per pint! The beer has improved in the pub since the new owners took over, it's no longer like dishwater! We go in the pub every weekend and spoke to the landlord last week, to be fair the increase is forced on them by the brewery, but he did say that where possible offers will be available periodically throughout the year.
|
Steep rise of 15p per pint on beers and lagers
|
sorry, just heard too many bad comments not taking the chance. Believe the newly opened Basin Restaurant, previously the Marco Polo is good though - must try
|
I visited the Greyhound a few weeks ago for a bite to eat after long travels from abroad. What I found was extremely welcoming staff, excellent service for a Pub serving good pub food. The beer was good and so was the food. Friendly staff and relaxing environment. Well worth a second visit.

Just visited The Greyhound at Boothstown, what an excellent pub for good old fashioned "Pub Grub". Friendly management - The changes made in the pub are a credit to them! Comfortable sofas to sit and eat your food while you watch X Factor on the large screen! Friendly atmopshere and very welcoming. Didn't feel out of place for a local pub. Friendly clientel. Well worth a visit when in the Boothstown/Worsley area.

WOW! What a fantastic pub! The atmosphere is fantastic, very relaxed on the new leather sofas watching the football on the new Plasma screens. The food is amazing, lots of pub favourite choices and weekly specials. I like the disco and karaoke on a Friday/Saturday. Great night out had by all!

minesalargeone you are far too drunk to comment! The food in the Greyhound is back to traditional pub food and is superb. The new owners are very friendly and family orientated, what a pleasant transformation post june 08. Keep up the good work!
|
hearing nothing but bad comments on the food now. Bar staff are fantastic but they management have no communication with "punters"
|
management recently "moved out/on" and is now run by bar manager. Food was good but now it appears to be returning to a boozer. Football on evenings and weeks. Theme nights seem to be popping up every week. Shame really was nice when did more food.
|
Very good food, good selection of beers and lagers. Good service.
