The Chevalier Inn, Exeter

The worst Weatherspoons Lloydst No1 that I know.
Like many of the chains bars it is understaffed.
Strangely in the Winter they don't put many lights on, which makes for a frustrating time if you want to read.
Doesn't normally welcome footy fans but made an exception for Plymouth Argyle (?)
More, er...., dodgy characters than the average JTW.

Mill On The Exe, Exeter

Expensive but decent enough family stop.
You get a lot of students with their parents at the start and end of terms/years.
Most Grannies would be happy to eat here.
This is a rebuild. The original Mill was largely where the Car Park is now.

The General Buller, St Thomas

Can get feisty. Don't take your granny there if she's upset by harsh vocabulary.

Kings, Exeter

Good honest pub. Great separate function room. Has a decent community feel with plenty of Darts teams and more boards than they could wish for.
Great for local bands.
Inexpensive accommodation above, but don't expect it to be quiet as it can be a noisy venue.
Great Landlady as is her number two & the rest of the staff..
Sadly the drink ain't that cheap, but that's the fault of Heavitree Brewery who have a bit of a reputation as expensive booze provider for their tied houses.

The Duke Of York, Exeter

A basic, just off town centre pub.
Little distinguishes it these days. Recently been spruced up so seems cleaner but all just a bit bland.
Considering its nowt special, its not particularly cheap. Beer is also so-so, nothing out of the ordinary.
Locals are for the most part a decent bunch, but little cliques of drunks sometimes form in the corner and may intimidate some. To be fair, they are generally more dangerous to themselves.

The Clifton Inn, Exeter

A good solid local located in the Newtown area.
Not a hint of students.
Darts & Pool still very popular here.
Nothing special in the provision of Real Ale, but rest of range up to scratch.

The Black Horse, Exeter

Very popular with University students. So don't expect a quiet pint during term times. During the week amidst the summer break, the opposite is true.
The Landlord (Chris) does run a very tight ship though (including prompt closing - but often extends hours at weekends) and the staff are engaging and helpful.
Not a cheap pub, but generally friendly with plenty of Sport shown.
Lay-out is one big bar these days. I pine for the days when there was a cosy snug and separate Bar and Lounge, but then I'm a bit of an ageing old git.

The Barn Owl, Exeter

A hideous pastiche of bits n' bobs that represent what a non-drinker may well imagine what a pub should be like.
Built out of what purports to be reclaimed bits of old buildings.
Bitter limited to an overpriced pint of Caffrey's when I last went.
On the plus side, you could take your granny there with no fear of her becoming upset by real pub people.

The Eagle Tavern, Exeter

Sadly closed June 2006.
Planning permission earlier granted for (5?)self-contained flats, retaining the frontage and other fabric of this 191y.o. building.
Delay in progress may indicated that further applications for a total re-build are likely.
Very sad. I drank here for 25 years. A great local pub in its hey-day, let down by long periods of neglect.
