The Old Mill, Plumstead

Ventured in last weekend for the 1st time in 4 years of living in Plumstead and I have to say I'm appalled with myself for not trying it sooner and having such ridiculous preformed opinions on it based on it's external appearance.

Very old fashioned inside without feeling remotely grotty. Put instantly at ease by the barman who obviously loves his ales and will wax lyrical for hours on them. Lovely unpretentious, unthreatening atmosphere. Excellent pint of Doom Bar and Double Century as well. He told me they have a beer festival on the 28 and 29 June. I will most definitely be there and many times before!

Bar Polska, Holborn

Very good Polish bar, not what I was expecting, (thoroughly bar like as opposed to pub like) quite small, VERY busy. Everyone spills out into the alleyway outside, makes you feel sorry for all the sober people who have to walk through the drunken crowds :o( I was there 2 weeks ago and we had a blast, the lagers are very good indeed, all bottled from what I recall but all big 500ml ones. You can't go wrong with a Lech (so many jokes, so little time). Polska vodka is good too, very friendly staff, they all seemed to be making an effort to see to you as quickly as possible whilst having a bit of fun themselves.

Great Harry, Woolwich

Hard to believe that a Wetherspoons is probably the most modern pub in Woolwich. It's not great but that's due to the customers a lot of the time. It has an immense range of drinks from around the world, so many beers & lagers & ciders, whatever your preference they seem to have it. Good, cheap food as you would expect with a Wetherspoons and plenty of seating. It's a breath of fresh air in dirty, grimey Woolwich, we need more places like this but hopefully not just more chain bars. The DLR is coming, hurry up, what more incentive do you need!?

The Pullman, Woolwich

Now closed permanently (possibly to be knocked down?) for the construction of the DLR link at Woolwich Arsenal station next door.

The Prince Albert, Plumstead

By far the best location of all the pubs on and around Plumstead Common. The seating outside is a wonderful place to watch the world go by from on a sunny day.

Similarly to the old mill though the mottled glass means you can't see inside and this is offputting for newcomers. Inside it's a bit like someones front room - this is not a modern pub. Decent standard lagers, not tried the beers, seems friendly enough, even when I sat inside ;o) You can get here from all over Plumstead/Woolwich via the 51, 53 and 291, if it made a name for itself and had a bit of investment this place could rake it in.

Who'd a Thought it, Plumstead

This pub predominantly serves the Woodlands Estate, due to it's proximity I would class it as my "local". It serves your everyday lager at reasonable cost but does do very good pub food at impressive prices. As with all the pubs in the area the owners need to step outside metaphorically and physically and take a look at itself. It does nothing to attract new people, it is definitely not inviting.

The outside is covered in broken glass, weeds and knackered cars, this does not look attractive. Those that frequent the place it choose to park their vans and cars anywhere on the pavement/gravel area, there is no structured/designated parking to discourage this and this results in it just looking untidy and, might I add, very difficult to drive past especially as its on a bend and the 291 always seems to come though at the same time! They make a good effort with flower baskets outside and it looks much better now it's not purple!

England matches result in immense hooligan-esque England flags being draped across large parts of the pub exterior, inside I can understand but outside makes it look like a den for thugs no matter how proud you may be of your country.

Inside is reasonable, the beer garden is acceptable, could do with a bit of upkeep though. Despite the above I think this pub is actually alright but as with everywhere around Plumstead Common there are many more people that would frequent the pubs and bring (much needed?) money if they improved their image a bit. Surely that is what landlords want?

The Star Inn, Plumstead

Has been done up very nicely on the outside (last year I think), lovely flowers and looks very smart & clean. A bit dated on the inside though and could also do with some new seating in places. Friendly enough and a good atmosphere, decent prices and the lager tasted good. Well placed for jumping on the 53 for a night out in Blackheath but only until places like this realise they're missing out on a lot of new money and give themselves a facelift for all the new people to Plumstead Common :o)

The Old Mill, Plumstead

Needs a bit of work on the outside, the nasty curtains and mottled windows mean you can't see what it's like inside at all. Very off putting for anyone new to the area (and that seems to be a lot of people considering the number of SOLD signs around Plumstead Common and the Woodlands Estate). Window frams and doors need some work as well, rotting wood is not a good look. It could be so much better, especially considering it's great location looking out accross the common and the character of the building itself. Friendly enough inside though and true the beer garden isn't bad.

Fuel Bar, Covent Garden

Tried this and Lowlander on the basis of the reviews on this site. It took a full 360 walk around the market to find it at first, certainly well hidden. We were dissapointed with the lack of draft beers, bottles only at club prices which was a shame, not much variety in the beers either. It's certainly atmospheric and looks cosy with all it's plush fabrics & cushions everywhere but there were no seats available for us to truly get into the mood. Feels like more of a pre-club bar than anything else, worth getting dressed up for anyway. I'll certainly go again but with more cash, more glammed up and a lot earlier in the evening!

Lowlander, Covent Garden

I went here with friends purely on the basis of the reviews on this site, I'm a big fan of belgain/dutch beers. I am so glad we went as it's definitely one of the best pubs I have been to in London. A huge varitey of beers not just your everyday Hoerrgarden, Leffe and Stella, I had a great pint of Brug. Rows of long candle lit tables, no music & friendly bar & table staff gives it that beer hall feeling. We were so impressed with the beer we tried the food too and the Lowlander burger is truely delicous. It's not the cheapest place admittedly, burger was 11 I think and a round of 3 drinks was just short of 15 but it's a great place to impress visitors with if nothing else. Highly recommended.
