The Waggon and Horses, Lymington

I was in the area and looking primarily for somewhere to eat, and secondary to have a decent pint. I read the reviews of this pub, and whilst they were generally positive, I was a little concerned about the bad experience that the most recent reviewer had.

Still, I decided to give it a go. And was glad I did, as everything was fine!

I took notice of another review on here about the chicken curry being good, so I ordered one of those and a pint of Henry's IPA. The gentleman that served me couldn't have been more friendly and polite. The food was excellent, and the beer was pretty good too.

The pub itself is a nice 'classic' country pub, with a bar area, a separate area for diners (although food is also served in the bar area) and a small room with a pool table.

No problems at all here, I would go back if I was in the area again.

The Tickled Trout, Wye

Popped in for some food whilst in the area recently. The Tickled Trout has a great location by the river with a large outdoor seating area, but unfortunately it wasn't warm enough to sit outside. Friendly service from the pub staff. The food was OK. I enjoyed what I had but it just didn't have the polish of other pub food I've had elsewhere. I don't want that to sound bad, as there certainly wasn't any problem with the food. Beer-wise, several handpumps on. I had a couple of pints of Ringwood Bitter which was tasting good. I'd say this pub is definitely worth a visit.

Sheffield Tap, Sheffield

Absolutely amazing pub, can't praise it enough!

The Tap has been open for several months now, and in that short time they have had lord knows how many Thornbridge ales on (Thornbridge is their main supplier, the Kipling is pretty special), a global bottle selection to rival the Devonshire Cat, and they've excelled themselves by recently having had a range of Brewdog beers on draught. Sadly, the draught 'dog has now all gone. As has already been mentioned, they refuse to stock any of the commercial rubbish (eg Carling, Stella, Boddies, etc).

The pub is small, but very well formed. It is like stepping back in time to a good old blokes drinking den. The staff are all decent and polite, and they can all pour a decent pint.

Not much in the way of food (they have a panini grill, and that's about it) but then again, you don't come to a pub like this a three course feast.

There must be some fault to pick with the place, it can't be perfect surely? Erm... Well... Um.... Er.... The hand-dryer in the gents is crap.

Cubley Hall, Penistone

Nipped in a few days ago, first time I've been to Cubley Hall in years! We had a couple of pints in the bar along with food from the bar snacks menu. Beer very good, food good and reasonably priced too. Nice friendly service from all the staff. Good pub, in a very nice location that gives great country views from the beer garden.

The Waggon and Horses, Langsett

Old fashioned country pub, adjacent to the reservoir at Langsett. Friendly bar staff, serving (amongst others) beers from Bradfield Brewery and Timothy Taylor. The Bradfield Farmers Blonde beer tasted very good! The food looked nice, although we didn't eat there. Plenty of seating available in both the main lounge bar, and a separate restaruant area.

The Bridge, Topsham

Popped in whilst in the area a couple of weeks ago. Nice selection of ales and an older crowd in. When I entered the place, I wasn't sure where to go to find the bar. I had seen the 'lounge room' from the road as I walked past, so I knew not to go that way. I then almost walked into the private staff area before I realised what that room was.

I eventually found the bar (well more like the indoor serving hatch) and got a pint. Took it outside (nice outdoor seating by the river) and enjoyed it. For my second pint, I'd found the outdoor serving hatch so easier to get served. Both beers were good.

Good pub, can't really fault it. However it is the only pub I've ever been in where it's not obvious where to go to get served and unfortunately that's quite important in a pub! Will be docking a point for that.

The Bavarian Beerhouse, Shoreditch

As a novelty bar, I like it. Than again, me and German beer have a very special friendship!!!

Had a couple of midweek visits whilst in London a few weeks ago. Immediate reaction upon entering the place was tacky looking but very authentic. Looked like a problem German beerhouse, felt like a German beerhouse, German staff, German music, German customers and a great range of beer - only time I've seen Paulaner Dunkel on tap in this country.

As per other reviews, it's table service only. Fine when quiet, but I can imagine this being slow and frustrating at busy times. The girl serving was polite and friendly enough, despite being the only person serving at the time.

The food was fine. Pretzels were blummin huge, and the wurstplatte (spicy sausage platter) with potatoes and sauerkraut was very nice.

Prices not too bad either, given the nature of the beer - 4.00 for a pint, or 7.80 for a stein.

On the downside, the gents toilets weren't up to much. Dull, a bit grubby and gave me an overall feeling of, well... vandalised.

As I said at first, great novelty bar. I certainly want to go back when next in London, however I can imagine the novelty would wear off if it was my local, or having to put up with table service only on a busy weekend night.

The Kings Arms, York

I love this pub!

Fantastic riverside location, this Sam Smiths pub is a real gem (and I think they know it!) Typical range of Sam Smiths own beers on offer, and at typical Sam Smiths prices. I've not eaten here, so I can't comment on the food. When the sun comes out, there's a fantastic outdoor riverside terrace to enjoy your beer (possibly York's finest drinking spot?) However, when it's raining...

The Monsal Head Hotel, Monsal Head

I called in earlier today, and I was thinking of all the earlier BITE comments about the place being expensive. I was dreading to think how much they were going to charge me. I'm pleased to say that the Monsal Head's Stables bar wasn't expensive at all! All their draught beers and lagers were under 3 per pint (which is great value in my book), and their food menu was reasonable too - it was exactly the sort of price I'd expect for the good quality restaurant food on offer.

Right, that's the prices out of the way. It's a very nice pub, very small however (so expect to make use of the outdoor seating) with a good selection of real ales and a very good food menu. I had the steak melt earlier today, and it was fantastic. Great food, very good beer, amazing location and good prices (under 3 per pint remember) makes for a great pub.

The Ship, Reedham

Great location for a pub - right by the river, and next to Reedham's swing railway bridge. Nice pub, friendly staff. However I do think they were milking their location (and their near exclusivity) by charging three pounds for a pint of Abbot.

I would have given this pub a 7, but given the very steep price of beer, I've knocked them down to a 6.

The Ferry Inn, Reedham

To say this pub is out in the sticks, it was a really nice place and fairly busy when I visited.

The friendly staff made me feel welcome, and my order of belly of pork and Adnams Broadside were very good -nice food and nice beer.

The Old Cannon Brewery, Bury St Edmunds

Wow! What a pub!

The home-brewed beers are great. I tried both the Gunners Daughter and the Blonde Bombshell earlier this week - both were fantastic, the Gunners Daughter being very very good!

It's a really good pub, just over 5 minutes walk from the station (so you know what to do when waiting for a train - I did!) with a friendly welcome.

Good stuff!

The Fat Cat, Norwich

Agree with all previous comments (well except for bobotinks - why come to a pub like this and drink Stella?)

This is a fine pub. Has an excellent range of drink - there's the Fat Cat's own brews (of which I sampled the Top Cat and the Stout - both very good) numerous real ales, eight belgian beers on tap (oh if only I had time to sample these!) ciders and bottled beers.

Great olde world style pub, and very well kept. Just out of the city centre, so no townies. Friendly staff are the icing on this alcoholic cake.

Very recommended!

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

Hidden away (but signposted from the street), this is a classic olde-worlde pub. Was very busy when I went in earlier this week. Good selection of ales - I had the Avalanche (very nice!) which the lady who served me insisted on me leaving it to settle so she could top it up, great!

I didn't eat, but looking at the blackboard that lists the toasties, the prices looked very cheap for this part of London.

The Grapes, Limehouse

Popped in earlier this week, and had a couple of pints of the Brakspear Oxford Gold - very nice!

Upon opening the door, I was greeted by a bluddy huge dog (either an alsation or a german shepherd - not sure which?) who was actually friendly! He must be the pubs dog as he appeared to have the run of the place.

Good range of beers and friendly service, and off of the tourist track.

The Harp, Covent Garden

Good pub. Popped in on the evening of Tuesday 11th March for a swift pint. First impression was the size of the place, very narrow. Not packed, but there were a good number of people in. Friendly service, and numerous real ales to choose from.

Extra points for the novelty of the sausage grill behind the bar - I've never seen that in a pub before!

When I'm next in London and feeling thirsty, I'm sure I'll be going back to The Harp!

The Milestone, Sheffield

At last - Sheffield's finest is finally on BITE!

This bar/restaurant has been open about a year, and I'm still as impressed when they first open. Smart, contemporary bar with a good selection of beers - a couple of real ales, a few continental lagers and possibly the finest pint of Paulaner in Sheffield.

The bar snack menu that's served downstairs contains some really good pizzas. A full restaurant menu is served upstairs. All reasonably priced.

The Milestone is just on the outskirts of the city centre - easy enough to get to, but just far enough out to keep the townies out!

As if all that isn't enough, visit in the quieter times and you will get table service and they allow you to run up a tab and settle at the end. Such a rarity, it simply adds to the appeal of the place.

Add to all this nice friendly staff who are always keen to help, and the Milestone scores a big 10 from me!

The Wig and Pen by Milestone, Sheffield

Great little bar, small but perfectly formed. The Wig and Pen is a classy bar that attracts a good range of smart customers - no townies! It's a massive transformation on what used to be Shenanigans.

Cosy and friendly atmosphere with friendly service from the staff. Currently serving Paulaner Weissbier.

12 Jan 2008 01:25

Takapuna, Sheffield

Overly stuck up and pretentious, Takapuna was OK (not great) when it first opened. But the place now thinks it's something it isn't.

The townies might like it, but it's not somewhere I'd want to go. No specialist beer either.

12 Jan 2008 01:22

Henry's, Sheffield

Henry's closed years ago. I can't believe it's still listed here as being open!

12 Jan 2008 01:18

Fagan's, Sheffield

Best pub food I've ever eaten!

Great little pub, stuck in the past (but that's no bad thing). Small range of beers, but the Guiness always tastes good.

Tom and Barbara are possibly the best pub hosts you could ever want to meet.

The steak pie (served only on Fridays) is absolutely legendary. For the price, you'll not have a better pie and chips meal anywhere.

12 Jan 2008 01:17

The Devonshire Cat, Sheffield

This pub has Sheffield's best range of beer - bar none! Whatever your tipple, the Dev Cat will have something to suit, whether it's British real ales, ciders, European wheat beers, abbey ales...

It's situated below a block of student flats, but it's not a student pub - there's always a mixed customer base in the pub.

Typically friendly bar staff, and most of them (certainly the blokes) seem to know a thing or two about the beer they're serving. The pub does get busy at weekends, but that's probably fair given what a decent pub it is.

12 Jan 2008 01:13

The Bath Hotel, Sheffield

Proper Olde Worlde pub. Hidden away, just off the main West Streep drinking strip. Plenty of real ales, and Schneider Weisse on tap. Definitely worth visiting for a pint or 4!

12 Jan 2008 01:06

All Bar One, Sheffield

Yes it's an All Bar One. Yes it's a national chain...

But in the last year or so that I've been going in here, I've never had a bad experience. It doesn't get the drunken chavvy louts that some All Bar One's might get. There's a nice relaxed atmosphere, which is good!

Draught beers include Schneider Weisse and Edelweiss.

12 Jan 2008 01:05

The Sheaf View, Heeley

What a gem!

First discovered this pub around 6 months ago. Nice location, just on the edge of the city centre. Mixed range of customers. No mainstream beers/lagers. Sizeable indoor area. Great outdoor terrace. Friendly staff.

There's usually 3 or 4 real ales on. In the time I've known this pub, my drink has been Erdinger Dunkel - a gem of a dark German beer and under 3 a pint!

I went in a couple of nights ago, and they've only got Sleeman Honey Brown Lager on draught! It's not cheap, but it's worth every penny. An absolute amazing beer in a very good pub.

Recommended.
