user reviews of the Butlers Arms, Pleasington

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited in February 2012 after hearing The Butlers Arms was under new management. What a great decision to give it another chance after visiting under the previous management! The welcome by the staff was fantastic, the service was perfect, the food and drink selection was great. This is a lovely pub/restaurant and it's nice to see it being run so well again. Our food arrived within a very reasonable time of ordering, we were served complimentary warm bread with oil and vinegar while we were waiting, which was a lovely gesture and we were very impressed with the freshly cooked, homemade food. All round a lovely experience, without a fault. Recommended to anyone and I will be sure to visit again soon!

Superb meal again on Sat night, pub busy but still fit us in for a meal. Early bird is excellent value. Keep it up. Service excellent, one young girl in particular, a real gem, pretty, polite, always smiling and a great sense of humour.

my friends and I regularly visit this pub which involves a 300 mile round trip for me, and I cant believe the postings from some of the people on this site, in my opinion they seem to have an agenda which I am not privy to, but whilst not wanting to judge them too harshly it appears they have little in their lives that is positive and they seem to take pleasure in being negative and sniping at others. this is just the way some people are but the decent among us should not let these ill-educated, sad buffoons ruin the reputation of this warm and friendly pub. all the best to Richard & the staff, see you soon.

Sorry to bob in just another quick note. As I mentined before we have suffered from a bad reputation in the last couple of years, mainly due to severe errors of judgement and poor advice from others. If anybody below with a genuine complaint would be willing to try again, either contact me through this site or directly at the pub and I will do my utmost to ensure you have the perfect meal experience.
I do not agree with sites like this one and tripadvisor as I do not believe that just anyone should be able to post negative comments. I do thing that if you have had a positive experience at any establishment then it should be reported however very few people ever do this which I think is a shame. This site should be used as a tool to direct people when you have enjoyed something and not used against people where the cause may not always be in their control.
If there is anyone using this sight simply to get back at me for aomething I've done, such as having a disagreement with you, telling you to behave in the pub or any other reason outside of the food basis then please do not use this site to retaliate, man up and do it in person. It is not solely my income that is dependant on this pub. There are several full time members of my team who are dependant on income form here to support themselves and families. Therefore we do not wish to put off potential trade

Thank you to pubexpert01 for trying to rectify the situation and I will buy you a beer if you will make yourself known to me I will buy you a beer but please stop now thanks
rjwalkden - 27 Jan 2010 17:24
Hi there ithink you'll find this is Richard Walkden actually and I've just sorted this as I'm a bit sick of having to put up with people hiding behind this to tarnish my business. I have put up with a lot over the past four years including two lazy head chefs who destroyed my reputation well and truely. Luckily through some hard graft by my present team including cheffing and waiting we are getting back to the good food we had previously. Unfortunately you can't please everybody all the time and sometimes we do make mistakes and if we're to blame I will admit to it. I will not however concede to people who order the wrong meals and do not wish to pay for it. If you have a problem a suggest you contact me directly and not post vicious comments on this site.
We work very hard as an organisation and we are trying to reestablish our reputation and I apologise to anybody who has not been happy in the past four years hopefully if you are willing to give us a chance you will see that things have dramatically improved.
Thank you for your time
rjwalkden - 27 Jan 2010 17:21
I had a feeling he was a little over-effusive! pubexpert01 indeed!
Maybe a change of career is indicated. (I suggest something other than self-aggrandisement)
The_Final_Arbiter - 27 Jan 2010 12:31
everybody knows that pubexpert01 is richard walkden the so called landlord of the butlers arms. just admit it that your place is a load off rubbish and the sooner you leave so other people who know how to run a place takes over the better
chefgod - 27 Jan 2010 12:16
excellent
pubexpert01 - 24 Jan 2010 21:14

pubexpert01 - 24 Jan 2010 21:13

Thanks
pubexpert01 - 24 Jan 2010 21:13
We can only add positive feedback as we have never had any proiblems and the staff and management are always so attentive I can't wait for my next visit
pubexpert01 - 24 Jan 2010 21:12
we also vcisited on thursday and they offer 1/2 price wine. this teamed with succulent lamb chops and a fantastic rump steak was a great bonus
pubexpert01 - 24 Jan 2010 21:10
The amount of choice available was unbelievable, I chose the chicken and pineapple kebabs and the curry and both were outstanding. I heard many other positive reviews and the place was packed full. Three course for 13.00 is fantastic value
pubexpert01 - 24 Jan 2010 21:09
we ate tonight and it was exceptionally good
pubexpert01 - 24 Jan 2010 21:07
I sometimes wish that there was a website called horriblecustomers.com where you can name and shame awful people who visit pubs and act up to make themselves more important. Having to hear two women whinge about food when they even admitted to ordering the wrong thing. YES I was sitting close by. you are a disgrace if you don't have anything p[ositive to say don't say anything at all. I cannot stand people who make a mistake and cannot admit to it. We visit this family pub on a regular basis and we thoroughly enjoy it every time. The standard has improved massively since may last year and we cannot fault it.
pubexpert01 - 24 Jan 2010 21:07
Shocking!! Shocking food and shocking customer service attitude! Having ordered Steak Rossini [medium] and Lamb cutlets we noticed that there were few others dining from the average choice on the menu. We soon found out why, the steak was overcooked and the Lamb chops were very chewy, almost impossible to cut even with the serrated knife. Worse was to come however when we questioned the quality of the steak - the manager came over and to say his customer service attitude was poor would be to compliment Basil Fawlty! We were make to feel embarrassed to have questioned the food at all and on chatting to other customers at the bar before we made a hasty retreat, we found that we weren't the only ones to have found the food and in particular the service severely lacking. No attempt at reconciliation was made. A most unpleasant evening for two usually easy to please ladies - buyer beware!! 40 plus for two 24th January 2010
happychappess - 24 Jan 2010 20:03
Visited last night with Missus and in laws, we ate from the early bird menu which we think is good value at 11 for three courses, or cheaper for two or just the one. 50% off a small selection of wines on Thursdays is hard to beat too. All the food was good, ale well kept and pleasant service too.
MartynT - 26 Jun 2009 12:28
Couple of visits recently, both good experiences. Top quality, well kept cask ale and a decent lunch on one visit too. Polite staff, no complaints at all.
MartynT - 4 Jun 2009 08:27
what has happened to this pub came here a few months ago and had a great meal and what i got last night 20th may 09 was truly disgusting
lovefood12 - 21 May 2009 21:06
I have been to this public house several times and will be taking friends for our Christmas Lunch this year.

The food is consistantly good and there is a great wine selection too.

A recommendation for anyone looking for a tasty, affordable and relaxed meal out in east lancashire.
pubprincess - 3 Dec 2008 13:09
Visited last night. 3 cask beers on, Thwaites, Hydes and Deuchars, all spot on. We then shared an olives, bread and dipping oil starter - excellent, as it well should be.

My wife had the Haddock and I had steak pie, both excellent. Service good and not over attentive or "hovering". A Chilean house red was also excellent if a tad pricey. A good drink and a good eat, plenty of people dining if a bit light on drinkers but it was a horrible night weather wise.

Saveyourmoney, if care to look back through the reviews, you will read my (once), negative review. You will also read my positive one. I have no connection whatsoever with The Butlers Arms other than being an occasional paying customer.
MartynT - 24 Oct 2008 09:29
I DONT THINK THAT I AM MAKING A MOCKERY OF THE SITE WHEN I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT ALL OF THE GOOD REVEIWS ARE PUT ON THIS SITE BY THE FAMILY WHO TRY TO RUN THE PUB !
saveyourmoney - 22 Oct 2008 21:06
Visited on the Sunday night of last week and was delghted to find myself in a classic, traditional, welcoming pub. The young, tall lad behind the bar was very polite and an absolute pleasure, as was the lad working in the restaurant. The food was suberp, I had soup to start, served with a lovely, piping hot (and obviously hommade!) bread roll to mop up every last drop i could! I then decided to go for the Fish and Chips (not exactly Sunday lunch but i couldn't help myself!) and was delighted to find lovely, hand cut, fluffy chips! All was finished off with a fantastic rhubarb crumble! And all that for 11! All in all, I plan on making The Butlers Arms a regular place to visit, although, I'll make sure to book next time in order to get a free bottle of wine!
goodpubgrub - 22 Oct 2008 12:54
saveyourmoney can you please tell us what was wrong with the food as i go to the butlers arm every week for dinner and was in on sunday for dinner and there was no problem with anything served that day as allways the food was fab as was the service
lovefood12 - 15 Oct 2008 21:35
Saveyourmoney, I'm very interested to know why the diners left? Was the food of poor quality, cold, poor value or something else? As you state that they left because of the food, it's not unreasonable to ask why. I'm quite surprised at your posting as our last experience was a very good visit.
MartynT - 15 Oct 2008 09:27
went to the butlers just for a drink whilst waiting for a lift, within 15 minutes 3 tables of diners had walked out of the resturaunt due to bad food. unknown to me i later was told from a local at the pub that this was the norm ! thanks for the clogg.
saveyourmoney - 13 Oct 2008 22:37

Visited here on 29/8/8. We were greeted warmly by the barman and served an excellent pint of Tiger bitter. We were very kindly seated in a cool area of the dining room, (it was v warm that night), and the good service continued. I had trout and my wife had a shredded beef concoction, (can't remember it's name), and both were superb. We shared a black pudding starter, again, superb. All in all a much better experience than last time. Well done.
MartynT - 30 Aug 2008 15:14
initally offered 3 courses for a tenner! The starters are basic... ok but what more do you want for an appitiser! Then with about ten main courses to choose from brilliant! My wife aked if another menu was available and the waitress offered us an a la carte menu AND a bar snacks menu (at 7.00pm in the main dining room!) we had choise of home made beef lasagne to sea bass with chorizo with roquette, new potatoes and pesto! viva la choise! The bar snacks menu said it was served with chips but she asked and it was served with a mixed green salad and a side of garlic bread, i went for the pork an leek sausage simply with mash and we both were presented with full plates of really good food-they good choise of bitters on cask (with one changing regularly we were told )and a couple of none alcholic lagers-the holsten none alchohol was recomended for my better half-as she was driving- as having "a full hoppy taste just like a good German beer" by the obviously well trained bar man-couldnt fault our visit and at the end of it all as we were both a bit full opted to share a sticky toffee pudding-being cheaky we asked for ice cream and cream- and enjoyed it fully! Take our advice ask and you shall recieve!

Now this pub is in nice surroundings in a lovely place called pleasington. I live locally and go here when i want to treat my family to good traditional meals and a friendly atmosphere. It is one of these places that is always full until my LAST visit!
I could not belive it because it was half empty and after the meal i know why. It had a different A'La Carte menu which did not cater for childeren AT ALL! Even the family on the next table i could here their teenage sons say that they can't find owt to eat. Somtimes change is not what people please get back to real pub grub! please.

Went last week to this place for a meal.My mum, Having not been out since 1952 was simply appalled at the attitude of a fat young woman who said that she owned the place, and that if you didn't like it, F*ck off, and go somewhere else! We certainly will !
foodiesgetfatter - 6 Jun 2008 02:26
had a meal here on the 5 may 2008 with my partner.had the set menu soup with roll, plate meat pie with chips & veg. have to say, met at the bar with a very nice woman. tried the cask ale found it to be exelent.the young chap ( about 30 ) took the order and was v. curtious. the soup was pieping hot and v. good.the mane course was excelent. nor me or my guest tried the sweet as we where full. so on the hole i would say that yes i would recomend this eatery. plessent place sett in a nice little place. to all the staff i say thank-you.

P.S. it would in my opinion be a good idea to have the staff wear name tags. steve & julie

You may be interested to know that the proprietor has now replied to my letter and given fair and reasonable explanation for the service we received on our visit. I won't bore you with the details except to say that we have decided to return and offer the opportunity of redemption.

me and my family went to the butlers arms Pleasington for a sunday lunch and we were greeted by avery rude lady who quickly ushered us to a dirty table. we had to sit there whilst a scruffy waitress wiped our table with a dirty dishcloth. i looked at my wife and asked if we should leave but we were meeting other people and so decided to give the food a go. we ordered very simple dishes but what we recieved looked like a two year old had put it togther. the landlady short of throwing our meals at us was dispicable. our roast beef was like shoe leather and our potatoes black and onion rings unrecognisable as what they are. out sweets looked like they were bought from thne local shop with lumpy cold custard. when we recieved the bill we were overcharged and when we let the landlady know this she was very rude and i overheard her telling one of the waitress's that if we dont like we can p***s off! so overall it was not what we expected and the day after my son and mother in law had the sh**s! inevitably we will not be going back ever again. we as a family do not generally complain but we were that disgusted we felt it was necessary to let others know the health risks they may faced with if stepping foot in the Butlers Arms Pleasington!

Regarding the last line from my comments above, nobody bothered to respond to my letter. For me that says it all. Oh well, you can judge for yourselves folks...

Visited this place last week, we were greeted warmly by a young man who served us with cask beer in good order. Fast forward 24hours, young girl serving, unsmiling didn't want to be there atitude. We had a meal which was excellent and so was the service. However, don't overstay your welcome, at well before 9pm, staff started blowing out candles in the dining area and made the most horrendous noise by cashing up about 2 meters away from us. We would have happily moved to the bar area had we been asked.Have wrote to the owner/landlord/whatever for his/her comments and I will post here if any reply is received.
