The Royal Oak, Poynings

Attractive and welcoming interior and reasonably quick service. Have not experienced the busy outside scenario so cannot comment, but in five visits have noted consistency. Food a bit dear, but nicely served and a generally good experience all round. Like the locals with their dogs in the bar.

Attentive and cheerful staff, good menu, and log fire in one fireplace with candles in others. Recycled bricks and old timbers in the new part still look pretty convincing. Going back...

The Smugglers, Pevensey

Surly-looking bar staff who talked to the regulars and completely ignored me as I stood there with a note in my hand, despite the fact that one of them was doing nothing. Wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.
